SELF ESTEEM is a glimpse into Rebecca Lucy Taylor's personal and professional journey to becoming a solo artist. Part diary, part poetry, this collection of Rebecca's thoughts, lyrics, drafts and notes is a look into the deepest corners of Rebecca's mind - and her phone.
I cannot count the amount of interactions I have had that leave me with an overwhelming feeling of ‘I should have said _______’
This book by Rebecca Lucy Taylor is full of ‘what you really wanted to say’ moments - bleak ones, hilarious ones, self-deprecating ones.
Her debut book (published by YourShelf) strides the boundary of courage and regret. It plays with expectations, sometimes obliterating them, other times holding them close. I think you would have to be a complete maniac to not care even slightly about what others think of you and Rebecca’s writing addresses that inner dilemma: does it make me selfish to put myself first in some situations?
The answer, of course, is No. But society often teaches us otherwise, especially women.
Quotes like “Polyamory is all very well and good until I have my first red carpet” and references to utter bollocks wellness culture (such as Huel) had me cackling with laughter 🤣
Other lines such as “Running my hands over myself desperately trying to imagine they’re not mine” are gut punches in lyrical form. Yes, the phone note poems in this book are short, but they are loaded with feeling. If anything, their brevity makes them more effective, the writer’s intended message isn’t lost in a sea of other words. It is concise, it is powerful.
Rebecca Lucy Taylor is a unique and singular artist. It is so incredibly cool to have this artistic, vulnerable, funny look into her years long journey from the late days in a band through the genesis of Self Esteem to the solo artist she is.
Despite being a fan I wasn't really expecting much from this collection of phone notes but it's one of the most emotional things I've ever read. Spotting the early signs of lyrics is just another bonus.
Self Esteem (Rebecca Lucy Taylor) is a musician, artist and poet. This collection of words is a deep look into their mind and their notes app on their phone! It is a beautiful piece of work.
The book is made up of a collection of different moments spanning 7 years (2014-2021) and includes draft pages of words from their most recent music album, Prioritise Pleasure.
This album was my favourite album of 2021, and to receive this book accompaniment was incredible.
One of my fave moments within the book, or quote, and comes from my most listened to song on the album:
“Getting married isn’t the biggest day of your life, all the days that you get to have are big” - Self Esteem, I Do This All The Time
I highly recommend reading this book but do listen to their work first, and then listen again and then for a third time
