An unimaginable crime. An unexpected hero. An unbelievable reward. Simon lived a comfortable life. He had a steady job, a wife that shared his interests and an active social life. But he could not shake the feeling that something had gone awry, that perhaps the contentment he felt with his life was nothing more than an illusion. Then his wife shatters the illusion by telling him she’s through. His disillusionment leads him to an unfamiliar part of town where he finds a monster hell bent on causing unspeakable carnage. Simon's act of heroism in stopping the gunman gains the notice of a divine presence, who grants him unfathomable powers in recognition of his sacrifice. This sets Simon on an adventure of discovery as he tries to evade those furious at his heroic intervention, not to mention shadowy government figures intent on discovering the ‘secret’ behind his new-found powers. The question of why he was given this gift, and what he is meant to do as a result, will lead him to parts of the world he never knew existed. Along the way, he will experience passion, betrayal, joy and heartache unlike anything he could have imagined. In the end, he will grapple with the question of if this ‘gift’ was in fact a curse, or if he can still find a glimmer of happiness. Freewill is the tale of a simple man given abilities which make him a god among men and his journey to find the one thing his powers cannot grant, but which all men covet. This novel is a work of romantic science fiction with plenty of fantastical elements. It features plenty of sensuality and impolite language, along with an unabashed exploration of the devasting effects of the modern conservativism. It is intended for adult readers.
Very obviously reminiscant of Stranger. The character s are human and have our doubts and failings. This is definitely one of my Jake Lazerus favorites.
