Humans may have opposable thumbs, but they can also be pretty dense. Axis the Roomba, Taco the cat, Jane the turtle and Noal the puppy take it upon themselves to protect their humans. Our unlikely quartet solves murder mysteries, takes on the cat mafia and tries to save the world. Of course, before they can do that, they must solve their own differences and that task might actually be harder than saving the world...

The Axis Quartet is her debut novella.

The Axis Quartet is a novella comprised of a series of short stories and it's one of the most charming, hilarious books I've read in a while! It follows the adventures of this sentient Roomba and his family - his mom and dad, as he calls them, and their pets - a cat, a turtle and a cute lil Dalmation pup! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The stories in this novella are fun and slice-of-life like, and just made me feel very mushy and happy inside! They're also kind of hilarious- I mean, IT'S A SENTIENT ROOMBA, YOU GUYS, COME ON!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The book has five short stories, and I loved the first three a lot! The last two however ended up stretching my suspension of disbelief a bit too far and I couldn't really buy into them as easily. That being said, they were still funny and I got a good laugh out of them anyway! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This book is perfect for the fans of stories like The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. It's a story that, while it seems serious, also doesn't take itself too seriously. And it's a story that will warm your heart as it tickles your funny bone! Would 100% recommend this if you're looking for a fun, light read to add to your tbr!!
Thanks to the author, Sophia John, for sending over the review copy! All opinions are my own!
If you are someone who gets excited over crime thrillers and murder mysteries, but also appreciate the humor of texts, then this book is right up your alley! In a world dominated by humans, we may not be the smartest species; not when we have this quartet of amazing creatures who are always ready to save the day! Axis the Roomba, Jane the turtle, Taco the cat and Noal the puppy are truly dedicated to their hoomans and are ready to take on whatever challenges come their way! Whether is it the mafia (nudge-wink) or a murderer on the loose, this is the team you can always count on! The cover is really pretty and features our four leading species. The title is very apt since the Roomba is like a leader to the lot. The chapters are divided as separate adventures and are in chronological order of events, which makes them all the more fun to read! The writing style is very simple, yet very witty! There are a lot of puns used which I really liked! I think this has the true potential of being a 5 star read with only some minor changes! You might enjoy it if you like short stories, fables, witty writing, crime-murder-mystery and/or humor books. Overall, it is a cute tale that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.
The Axis Quartet is a collection of some short stories that revolve around the lives of a rather unorthodox "quartet" - a sentient robot Axis and his three friends - a cat, a puppy and a turtle. They live as pets with a human couple, whom they address as their parents. You'll often see the Axis quartet meddling with each other. But that is not to say they cannot be responsible whenever something goes wrong. Together they are capable of stopping robbers, solving murders and even saving the world.
I loved the unusual dynamic between these characters. It was a delight to see how they learned to work things out together over time. All of the protagonists were adorable, but my absolute favorite is Axis! He has a very eccentric and unique perspective of the world. He is very smart, has a great sense of humor, but can also be insecure at times. To see the world in his point of view was definitely one of the most interesting things about the book.
The stories were really fun and sweet as well. My only complaint is that, sometimes the pieces just fell into the right places a little too easily. They could have been lengthier with a better foundation.
For me, the best thing about this book was easily the humor. I found myself laugh out loud at the various jokes and puns Sophia so ingeniously put throughout the novella. If you're looking for a light and humorous read, I definitely recommend "The Axis Quartet". A solid 4 out of 5 from me!
"Humans are too prideful to feel threatened by those beneath their noses."
Humans have the tendency to undermine other races but in this world of human dominance, Sophia John, the author of The Axis Quartet introduces us to four intelligent, clever, funny, and loving creatures. Not only are they ready to sacrifice themselves, but they also take it upon themselves to save the world.
Meet Axis the Roomba, Taco the cat, Jane the turtle, and Noal the puppy who live together in a house with human parents and their kids. They talk in their own language but they can communicate with the kids. Noal is goofy, Jane is sweet and responsible, Taco has no-care-in-the-world attitude and Axis is smart but it sometimes drowns in self-pity and insecurities.
This collection of short stories is full of adventures, murder mystery, mafias, and whatnot with a pinch of humor. I found myself laughing quite a few times at their narratives because it was fascinating to see the world through their eyes. I enjoyed the bantering between Axis and Taco and they were probably my favorite characters. However, some events in the story escalated quickly, they felt rushed and I think they needed a strong foundation or better explanation.
The first three stories were engaging and I liked them but the last two could have been better. They didn’t hold my attention; I feel the premise was good but the execution wasn’t. That being said I think you would enjoy this book if you like to read short stories and humourful narratives combined with thriller and mysteries.
What a marvelous mood uplifting novella! Something The Axis Quartet does is makes us realise that problems simple and solvable. When you start with book, your heart instantly melts at the cuteness and warmth of the sibling rivalry that the creatures have and yet they cannot live without one another. There is everything in the novella - jealousy, mystery, murder, magic and apocalypse and yet it's so light and make you want to keep on reading. It's a joyous read that reminds you that no matter how big a problem is, each of them have a simple and heartwarming solution. I recommend that every adult read this to experience their own child-like self once again.

I loved this story. It's quirky and humorous. The characters are well fleshed out and relateable, which is quite an achievement considering that they comprise a snarky cat, a loveable not-so-dumb dog, a wise old tortoise and a somewhat naieve but sentient roomba called Axis. The camaraderie and interaction between these mismatched adoptive siblings is adorable and totally believable and their whacks adventures are a hoot. Recommend it!
Quirky and humorous. I loved it! The characters are really well fleshed out and believable, quite a feat when they consist of a snarky cat, a loveable not-so-dumb dog, a wise old tortoise and a somewhat naive roomba named Axis. The camaraderie between this unlikely quartet of adoptive siblings comes across really well, and their whacky adventures are tons of fun. Highly recommend this book.
If grimdark fantasies and ultra-long epics have you exhausted, the Axis Quartet is a perfect book to pick up to rest and recharge your reading muscles in the interim. With a Roomba, a cat, a puppy, and turtle as the main characters, the cast is certainly quirky enough to warrant more than just a peek between the covers. The characters interact with each other in fun ways that make you chuckle to yourself. But our unlikely band of misfits are to take on the mafia and save the world. How they do so is something you have to read to find out.
Do yourself a favor and pick this up as fast as you can. If you've got kids that could do with some more reading aside from their textbooks, this is a perfect book to try and instill a reading addiction in them!
The first volume of the Axis Quartet consists of five tales of the titular group consisting of Axis the Roomba, Jane the turtle, Taco the cat, and Noal the puppy. It is a short, quick and light-hearted read recommended especially for the days you feel down.
The book could have been better with some editing concerning punctuations and paragraph structures. However, I couldn't find any but one spelling errors. There's a certain story where the character name is switched but Akanksh and Akanksha. But I won't be being too harsh concerning these errors, considering this is a first-time self-published copy. I'm sure the author shall make necessary corrections in the subsequent revisions of the book.
The first three stories were amazing, but something seemed amiss in the latter two. It felt as if they needed to be expanded upon more to add to the immersive feel of these stories.
Another gripe that I had about these were sometimes things happened too conveniently. But again, considering this was supposed to be a short light read, one can ignore these conveniences.
Although I liked the book as an adult, I think the target audience for the book is children, especially middle-grade school kids. I think to get a major reach among that age group, the f-bombs in the book act as a major hindrance. Perhaps those f-bombs should be replaced by something else, to appeal to that particular age group and their parents. (Do note that I have no issues with the usage of the f word)
Apart from these issues, the book was a heartwarming read filled with some great moments of camaraderie. I would be interested in reading another volume of stories filled with adventures of the quartet.
3.25/5. It deserves much more than that. I'm sure with subsequent changes and revisions, the rating will go up.
