To write a novel was a dream of mine since I was a child. Life, my practical nature, and self-doubt got in the way, so it was decades later that an opportunity to write finally presented itself. I honestly didn't think I had what it takes to write a full-length novel, but once I faced the blank screen and my fingers touched the keyboard, everything disappeared except my characters and their surroundings, and suddenly I knew that this was what I was born to do.

Since then, I've written many books and have enjoyed some positive reviews, but sometimes, when I stop to reflect, I'm still amazed that I'm living my dream.

Now that I have read 8 books, I find the character development of Jason, Micah & Kathreen wonderful. But I find Haze annoying. He is whinny, thoughtless at times with Jason's time and calling himself a detective is laughable. Jason solves the cases they are involved in not Haze. But Haze takes the credit. Haze can't even see that his wife is suffering. Early in book 8 I knew she was taking too much laudanum. Her actions were so obvious. But the so called detective had no clue. He asked so many inane and stupid questions of suspects. It is Jason that always puts him on track.
Going forward let us get more stories of Jason, his family and his extended family without the so called detective.

In way too deep

Redmond and Haze were called to a gruesome murder where a well liked young woman was stabbed repeatedly in her throat in her bed. She was the sister of Judge Grant a judge famous for no leniency! This will be important when reading!
Sybil Grant was described as broken by her friends and she was beyond repair! Beware your sins will find you out! Redmond and Haze suspect its an inside job but lack motive!
But the pieces that start to unravel become way too deep for Redmond and Haze to handle! There's death and prostitution, secret child, and deep dark betrayal! If you want to not put this one down! Give yourself several hours this is the hardest case yet!
Danger hits home and this one will leave you speechless and get a hanky ready!!! Outstanding!!! Bravo!!!

Murder in Half Moon Street is the 8th installment and was kinda let down from how much I liked the previous book. I'm really over Daniel Haze's constant inferiority complex, especially with his secret resentment of his "partner", Lord Redmond. I would have expected to see a bit more character development at this juncture in the series. Daniel also comes off very "bumbling detective Barney Fife" who can't even figure out his own wife is in grave danger. It's hard to want to continue to read about someone who is so friggin clueless about life. He is supposed to be a London constable but comes off like a naive farm boy who just set foot in the big city last week.

Nothing bugs me more than when very obvious clues are skipped over to prolong the story and that happened a couple of times in this book.

Jason was thankfully around to bring this mystery to a close. Obviously not my favorite in the series but will continue considering how much I've enjoyed the series overall.

I’m a bit disappointed with this one. The plot was rather obvious and I had high hopes for Jason to recognise the details. Sarah’s death is not unexpected and she sort of informed Daniel prior to committing suicide, which is again… a point missed by these two. Locked room mystery is always interesting but not in this one.

Another enjoyable installment in this series. Daniel and his family are living in London along with Jason and his family. They collaborate on another case involving a locked room mystery. Sylvie is found stabbed to death with her throat slashed in her locked bedroom. The sister of a prominent judge, her death is immediately suspicious. My money was on her brother, Oliver, from the start but there were plenty of red herrings. Her fiancé, David, had died reporting on the American civil war but she secretly had his child and gave it up for adoption, all arranged by Oliver in order to protect his reputation. But she often visited her daughter, now 3, and gave her money and gifts. Were the adopted parents worried that she would want her daughter back? Or was it a jilted lover? Maybe one of the servants? It was her brother in the end who was being blackmailed by his valet. Sylvie was tired of recruiting young girls for his brothel and was going to tell the truth to the police, which sent Oliver into a blind rage. The valet and Oliver were convicted and hanged. In personal news, Daniel’s wife, Sarah, cannot get over her depression after the death of her son, Felix. Even one year old Charlotte cannot save her and she commits suicide. Jason’s wife, Katherine, and daughter, Lily, are happy and healthy in London, Micah is in boarding school and baby Liam is being sent back to Boston to live with his mother, Mary.

Pulling on the thread to the end

I loved this historical whodunit staring Captain Jason Redmond and Inspector Daniel Haze. Like the other books in the series, it had a layered storyline, an intriguing mystery, surprising plot twists, and suspense. I was equally desperate to read it all at once to solve the mystery and also to savor it and make it last. Jason and Daniel are portrayed as real, relatable and complex people who have flaws and scars, but are really just trying to do their best as messy humans. Captain Jason Redmond is an American surgeon who is currently living in England after inheriting the estate and title of his grandfather. He is living with his wife and infant in London while he teaches and volunteers at the hospital. Daniel Haze is a detective inspector for Scotland Yard. His wife, Sarah, and his daughter are now living in London with him though things are strained. Daniel requests Jason’s help in London when a woman is brutally murdered in a locked room. The investigation leads Daniel and Jason to unlikely places, dead ends, and surprising revelations. As always, there are smaller side personal story arcs and social commentary which enrich the main plot line and give the characters greater dimension. I love this series.

“This was a very personal, frenzied attack. The killer didn’t simply want to kill Miss Grant, he or she wanted to watch her die..."
Daniel considered what he’d learned so far. The simple answer was nothing useful. Sybil Grant seemed to have led a blameless life, acting as hostess for her brother, playing the dutiful aunt to her nephew after he’d lost his mother, and donating her time to various charities. She’d suffered a romantic disappointment that seemed to have left a lasting mark, but aside from that, Daniel had learned nothing from either the staff or the people closest to Sybil that would explain what had incited someone to murder her in such a vicious, personal way. A jilted lover was always an obvious suspect, but unless there had been another man in her life, Captain McHenry was not only far away but happily engaged to another woman.

Avid Reader

Once again Daniel and Jason work as a team to solve another possible murder case, but Jason has relocated to London. Daniel 's mother -in-laws refused to come to London, and Sarah is permanently depressed. Daniel admitted that Sarah was prone bouts of depression before they married, and he saw himself as her protector. Now he realized he isn't enough. Unfortunately, there was limited knowledge about the brain and human emotions Bach then. Their story has a sad ending. The murdered woman sacrificed her happiness because of her brother. When she was described as broken, trurer words had not been spoken. She gave up so much. She only had one family member who truly loved her, her nephew.

3.5 stars.

No wonder I had no recollection of this book. It's because I haven't read it and was therefore quite shocked by the ending.

On the other hand, I did guess the murderer right from the start, but it was interesting to see how Jason and Daniel uncover the truth.

Tricky one. I liked the early Redmond & Haze books and was happy to forgive the weird "American war surgeon becomes an English Lord" angle, strange as it may be. And I like a locked room mystery as much as anybody but this one was a bit predictable and the Sarah saga is really wearing me out. Also Haze doesn't seem that much of a detective? It's mostly Jason doing the real job. Not sure if I'll bother with any more of the series. Don't get me wrong, they are well written and entertaining, but I think I had enough of it.

Another great read

Ms. Shapiro has a way of making you feel for the people in her books. You become invested in their lives and outcomes. Cheering for the good guys and in this case wanting justice to be served for the bad guys. All the while keeping you drawn to the 2 main characters and what is happening in their lives. What happens to Liam and Micah? I do want them to stay together, too deny sending Liam away to Mary... that's in a future book apparently. The storyline here has so many twists, the depravity of the villains, you don't see it coming!

Great!

Another unusual murder to be investigated! Redmond and Haze investigate the death of a young woman in a locked room, the sister of a London judge. Completely stymied, they keep probing and find many secrets in the lives of the murdered woman and her brother. Great investigation leads to a fight in a brothel, whose owners are involved with the murder. Confessions and shocking conclusion are very sad for all parties!

Good mystery read

Although I had guessed at the murderer about half way through the book, I was surprised at the reason for the murder. I liked the character development of Daniel and Redmond’s friendship. I felt sorry for Daniel and Sarah’s marital problems. But their ending was inevitable.
I’m truly glad that I found this series and will continue to read them. I’m amazed at all the plot twists the author dreams up. I solute her for keeping me a fan of her stories.

I devoured this series in less than a week.

I’m a big fan of mysteries and historical fiction. These books are entertaining and appropriate for ages ranging from late teens to elderly persons. Some of the earlier stories such as murder at the mill I found slightly predictable and accurately guessed the perpetrator of the crime long before the reveal, but this one had me guessing. I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment of the series.

Another good one

Justice triumphs, as it should. But such sadness. The systemic abuse of women, the scarcity of knowledge regarding mental health, and the lack of care for children was, and still is, heartbreaking. This book was a reminder that we still have far to go and that the atrocities perpetuated against women and children still need to be addressed. This novel was a bit darker than the previous ones but is well worth reading.

What can I say? This one ended on a very sad moment. I saw it coming, but was hoping against hope it wouldn't. Redmond and Haze must solve the murder of a young lady, found murdered in her bed in an apparently locked room. As they proceed to investigate, something in the lady's past may be the key to solving this one. On the personal side, Inspector Haze is heading straight into a nightmare. This was a great storyline but with a sad ending. Really looking forward to the next book.

Another good mystery in this series. When a young woman is brutally murdered in a locked room, Redmond and Haze have trouble finding motive or means and none of the staff or family is at all helpful. Both men are dealing with their own family issues, and for one of them, it will end tragically. Quite a bit of sadness in this one.

Thrilling and Intriguing

This author is always very good! She always has a way that makes you aware of wrongs in almost any society anywhere from earlier years to this time now. Her main characters are knowledgeable and fair. She of course always has some villains and of course victims.
You will enjoy this if you like a great mystery! Read and enjoy!

Excellent book!

Me Shapiro's books always contain great mysteries and this one was no exception. The ending of this book was a real shocker. I was quite surprised how it ended before she set up the new mystery to follow. Now I will certainly have to wait for the next book to see what happens.

Redmond and Haze, now settled in London with their families, are on the case of a mysterious death of a well respected society woman in a locked room. The mystery is engaging as always with a tragic victim and even more of a tragic ending. A quick read that although not difficult to guess the killer the why is not so easily figured out and that is the challenge and where the enjoyment lies.

Continues to be new

I've noticed many serial novels become repetitive. The characters become boring and the storylines become reused. Not so with the Redmond & Haze series! The mysteries continue to interest the reader and the characters continue to grow, giving Irina Shapiro's Redmond & Haze series readers something to look forward to.

Intrigue and heartbreak

Wow, this book has so many twists, again Daniel and Jason work to solve the murder of a young woman behind a door locked from the inside... At the same time dealing with family trials and joys at home....
If you haven't read this series before, I strongly recommend you start at the beginning of the series. Irina Shapiro well done.

An enjoyable piece of mystery writing

This book follows in the series of Inspector Haze and Dr. Redmond collaborating in solving crimes. The style follows suit with the proceeding novels and is an easy, and enjoyable read. It is a good combination of classic mystery and Victorian English history.

Another winner and a surprise

Ms. Shapiro has delivered yet another winner in the series. Redmond and Haze continue to develop as characters and her secondary characters are set drawn as well. The mystery holds your attention until the very end. And yet another surprise awaits. Good book all the way around.

This was well worth waiting for... apart from the - still happening today; inhumane depravity of humanity towards it's fellow man, we get to see the main character held upside down by his ankles so we could establish which flaws make him and which have been permanently eradicated.
Much happiness at the discards is felt by me, yay for a fabulous arrangement of words Irina Shapiro, much appreciated thank you :-)

Sad but satisfying ending

As with other books in the series, the murder victim has secrets. I suspected the perpetrator but the why was illusive. A mystery well written with further insight into the lives of Jason and Daniel. I hope that Daniel will have the strength to get over his personal tragedy.
