Just when Sergeant Samples thought his day couldn’t get any worse, it did. A violent thunderstorm tossed him out of the mail helicopter he was hitching a ride in and sent him crashing through the jungle canopy, leaving him bruised and battered in an area controlled by the North Vietnamese Army. He was lost, injured, and had no weapon or helmet; because the chopper had crashed shortly after he fell out, no one was looking for him. With the constant rain and cloud cover, he could not even tell which direction was which. The next day, while hiding in the dismal forest, he witnessed five armed enemy soldiers commit a terrible atrocity. Unknown to them, their victim survived, and Samples became involved in getting revenge on the perpetrators as a way to rejoin his unit. During this perilous and bloody journey, he develops a new relationship and a better understanding of the enemy. The non-stop action and intriguing story of this book will grab your interest and hold it until the surprise ending.
David writes some great books about Viet Nam and looking forward to reading many more in the future. Vengeance was a well-written story about a GI and a lady who had to work together to live and how they helped each other to survive.
This is one of the most unusual books about the Vietnam era. It tells the story of one American soldier, one VC woman and four NVA soldiers. The NVA soldiers are bad-actors which leads to the American and the VC forming an alliance.
Although there were several military items I wasn’t familiar with, having been there several years earlier and a year later, I found the story gripping and suspenseful. A very worthwhile book. Author is a very good storyteller.
I enjoyed reading VENGEANCE: A VIETNAM WAR NOVEL by David Allin. In fact, I've read most of this author's books and enjoyed them all. In this story, Sgt. Samples is on his own when he falls from a helicopter during a storm. He wasn't due back to the rear for a couple of days and nobody was aware that his plans in Cu Chi fell apart and he had hitched a ride on this ill-begotten chopper that crashed shortly after he fell out. They accounted for all the dead at the site of the crash.
Samples survived the fall but is beaten up. The next morning, he witnesses 5 NVA soldiers rape a young VC woman and then left her for dead. Samples had no weapon and wasn't strong enough to stop them. He helped nurse her back to health and she promised to help him get back to the base camp if he helped her get vengeance against those who defiled her. She wanted them all dead.
The story had me hooked and the read was well worth it.
The story flowed within the two storylines - the other is his platoon noting that he was AWOL. However, the number of typos and extra words throughout the book caused me to pause and interrupt the read. I've noticed this in all the author's books that I've read and mentioned it in reviews. They are so obvious that another read before publication would have captured them. I've taken a star away for this reason.
Author note: Somehow, Amazon has reviews mixed up with the incorrect books. I could not review this book on Amazon because it took me to a different book.
Regardless of the order you read them, the books are interlinked. A mention of an event here and their and then a book that goes into it with the full story. So many events to so many different characters. But,even that story contains glimmers of the other stories which give you time to reflect into the other books you have read. David Allen does a masterful job.
This book in my opinion had a so so story that moved along to slow. Vengeance could of had half the number of pages and still accomplished what it did. I mean it was ok to read, had some action. And the characters were fine. I probably should of only gave it three stars, but it is not a really bad read.
Yet another look at the VZN war with a very different perspective. Pure fiction but pointing out the true nature of the young men who heeded the call by their country…to do the right thing by going to war but also by doing the right thing, caring for the humanity, virtues and conscience of Americans.
Great story and plot! Quick reading as there is always something going on to maintain ones interest. It is like watching a movie or tv without suffering through commercials. The only thing I thought could have been stressed more is the humidity and smells. Yes they were discussed but it's hard to imagine just how bad it really was.
Samples and Carr keep me coming back, I love the unspoken brotherhood they have As battle buddies. It’s difficult to put the book down awaiting what the next page holds. The character development in this series of books is exceptional.
This book and it's ending was a total surprise and quite different ending than I had thought. It was a refreshing ending, but I do wish it had ended the good way for Samples
