Shawn Callon immigrated to the USA from Europe in 1994. The Diplomatic Spy and The Repentant Spy are part of The Simon Montfort Series. His interest in politics and spying comes from his extensive international travels in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America where he worked with government institutions and large commercial operations. He loves reading fiction and particularly enjoys John Le Carré's novels. Shawn describes his admiration for Le Carré " I love the complexity of his work and the 'greyness' of his major characters. His 'heroes' aren't tall, dark and square-jawed; they can be rather unhealthy and plump or drunks or just plain failures. He is the modern fiction writer that I admire most and would say he is the best in his modern genre." Shawn lives in the Midwest with his spouse, Elizabeth, who worked tirelessly as his editor helping him to identify grammatical errors and stylistic inconsistencies and contributing to the overall development of the book. Shawn Callon is a pseudonym.
I gave my new book 5 stars, I know I shouldn't do that but I want to shine some light on two humanitarian issues that are very important to me - the increasing problem of international refugees/internally displaced people and the growth in global human trafficking. Also I want to give a lift to the excellent work that my local anti-trafficking non-profit does - www.chainsinterrupted.com
In this sequel Simon embarks on an exciting journey where, although burdened by his recent acts of treachery and greed as a diplomat, you will witness him put aside marital infidelity and his own nightmarish past to embark on a journey of Remorse, Romance and Retribution – confronting the evils of human trafficking in the desperate world of refugees. Allegations of murder by the French police together with attempts to abduct his spouse, Béatrice, are just a few of the obstacles that could block Simon’s road to repentance. Simon Montfort is no longer the reliable 'spy' he once was. The years passed and many covert operations have burned him out. Unable to suppress feelings of guilt, he has turned to the bottle, alienated his wife and friends, and placed his very freedom at risk from both friend and foe alike. When an unlikely proposition is offered to Simon at a time his life has spiralled out of control, Simon not only see's this as an opportunity for redemption, but an opportunity to make a difference.
Posing as a French teacher, Simon assumes the identity of a teacher in a refugee camp located in Bulgaria. While helping in construction work and teaching refugees English in order to help provide them opportunities in Europe, Simon's main job is to locate persons responsible for operating a human trafficking ring responsible for kidnapping refugees and shipping them off somewhere in Russia. As Simon dives deeper into his assignment he learns human trafficking has reached proportions beyond imagination. Stories of victims create a burning desire for Simon to not only accomplish his mission, but ensure that those responsible pay for their crimes. With help from a special covert team, Simon dives head-first into what may be his most important mission ever.
Shawn Callon has delivered a gripping story! It is tense, page-turning, and thoughtful. The issue of human trafficking concerns us very much today and his novel is complete with harsh facts that cannot be ignored nor denied. The shattering climax will have readers glued to its pages. I highly suggest reading 'The Diplomatic Spy,' the prequel to 'The Repentant Spy.' They are both engrossing and sizzle with suspense.

Having read Callon's first novel, The Diplomatic Spy, I was intrigued as to the next step for his very flawed main character - Simon Montfort. This book didn't disappoint. Our 'hero' is struggling with the consequences of choices he made previously. His health is poor, his marriage is on the rocks, he has a serious drink problem and it appears that the French police see him as a person of interest in their inquiries into the mysterious death of his former c0-worker, Eric.
A seemingly chance decision to visit a church in Paris leads Simon to re-evaluate his life and choices. He decides to make something of his future. This involves giving up booze, getting fitter, being brutally honest about his past with his estranged wife and traveling to a refugee camp where a high level of human trafficking is taking place.
The book then develops into a fast paced thriller with surprise events and heartbreaking details of the dreadful but highly lucrative trade in human beings. I was impressed that the author is dedicating a substantial portion of the book's profits to a leading anti-trafficking charity. He is truly putting his money where his pen is. I thoroughly recommend this novel.

I loved the first Simon Montfort book, "The Diplomatic Spy", although I ended up not liking Simon very much. This second one takes off like a rocket and never slows down. If you enjoy thrillers, you'll love this one. If you have traveled or lived in parts of the world that are off the beaten path, you will appreciate the random cultural tidbits that the author includes throughout the book. I must say that Simon has very understanding friends & family, considering that he betrayed his country for money and arranged the murder of a colleague. Redemption is a fine thing but Simon's transgressions aren't minor. I have a feeling there is more to come in the story of Simon...I certainly hope so and I'll be waiting to read it!
The Repentant Spy is the second book I've read by Shawn Callon, and I was not disappointed. Callon knows how to weave a suspenseful, thrilling, spy novel. The story is about Simon Montfort, whose unsavory past catches up with him. Plagued by his past deeds, it compelled Montford to climb the steps of La Madeleine, a famous Roman Catholic Church and there he gives in to his inner turmoil for the evil deeds he had committed, and there he also meets up with a priest, Monsignor Eamonn Collins. Montford pours out all of his detestable deeds to the priest who bids him come clean with his wife and repent: "Simon, you have a gift for subterfuge and illusion but you have clearly misued these God-given talents. If you truly want to repent then you must find a way of using those gifts to benefit not you but mankind..." The priest tells Simon that there are many families exploited, and whose lives are in grave danger and to use his life to do good and not evil, then disappeared, later to find the priest was an apparition. At that moment, Simon knew what he would do. Changing his name to Pierre Laval, Simon goes undercover as a schoolteacher in a refugee camp in Apelpisia, Narissiki, Greece with intentions of bringing down a human trafficking ring. I applaud Callon for writing on the deeply disturbing subject of human trafficking. His research is sterling, and the storyline is well-plotted, thrilling, and top-notch, and a couple of curve-balls! I am giving Callon 5 stars and highly recommend it.
