Oblivious

Rate this book
Isn’t it obvious we’re just best friends?

Adrian is my best friend. We live together, hang out, and he’s the best cake taste tester I could want.

Hugs are the norm, along with cuddles while watching horror films. I need someone to protect me during the scary bits, so why not Adrian? He’s almost a foot taller than me, so he makes a good armchair too.

Life is exactly the way I like it until Adrian’s sister drops a bombshell that leaves me questioning everything I think I know about myself and my straight best friend.

Can one kiss change everything? I’m about to find out.

Oblivious is an M/M best friends to lovers novella. It’s a light and fluffy love story, with a double bi-sexual awakening, a little bit of heat and no angst. None. Zip. Nadda. There’s meddling family members and two sweet best friends who are totally oblivious about how much they really care for each other. Oh, and cakes. There’s lots of cakes.

“I’m your tree,” I remind him in a quiet voice. “And you’re my blossom.”

I’ll keep this review short because it’s a short book and I feel like I can’t say much without repeating what I have already said.

To put it mildly, Oblivious follows two childhood best friends in their 30s who realize they aren’t as straight as they thought they were and explore their new feelings together.

“It was beautiful. You’re beautiful.” He pecks a kiss on my cheek. “And you make great cakes.”
“You only want me for my food.”
“Well, they do say the way to a man’s heart is via his stomach.”
“I shouldn’t have any trouble getting to your heart, then,” I muse.
“No trouble at all.” Addy sighs. “You’ve had a place in my heart for a long time, Fitz.”.

What I absolutely love about best friends to lovers, especially in MM, is not only the awakening either one or both characters have, but also the general exploration of it. However, it’s definitely easy to mess the friendship up and make it go downhill. With new feelings, it’s obviously expected for the characters to be confused and wondering what is really going on, but I don’t like it when the characters either get disgusted or become super weird around each other for what happened. When they’re best friends, their past turns out to be effectively forgettable to the place where I keep thinking if it was even there in the first place after discovering that there is more than just platonic feelings. With Oblivious, the transition from best friends to lovers rolls so without a hitch. All that they did as friends (Addy spooning Fitz, Fitz sitting on Addy's lap, Fitz resting his head on Addy's shoulder, etc), they keep doing it as lovers, yet it becomes more personal and close for them. When they first kissed, their inner thoughts weren’t so centered around how “unusual” their body began responding, and keeping in mind that they're totally ordinary, I liked they didn't assume control over the considerations. They kissed… they responded… and afterward... they understood. They basically thought, “Well shit, I guess we like each other.”

“I love you, Fitz. We fit together. We always have. You’ve been the most important person in my life for a very long time. I’m just sorry it took me so long to realise how much I love you.”

The “plot” is straightforward and just follows Fitz and Adrian as they sort out these new feelings they've learned with regards to one another and gradually make it step by step. It's adorable and healthy, loaded with cuddling/spooning, shoulder kisses, temple kisses, pecks, a mix of delicate, slow, and long kisses, and knuckles brushing cheeks. There's also a cute picnic date Addy planned for him and Fitz. Since Fitz is a baker, he also tends to make new recipes/baking treats and has Addy try them. While there is also sex, it's new for both of them. It was an entirely new and different thing for both of them, and the way it took them time to finish exploring made this all the more realistic. The double bi-awakening felt depicted so well and not surged by any stretch of the imagination. They slowly explore their bodies and different ways to engage sexually, becoming more ready as time goes by, as well as exploring with other useful supplies (like toys) to make it easier. I appreciated and essentially cherished this since it showed the movement of their new change. While they weren't virgins and had been with women previously, sex wasn't the biggest deal for both of them, especially considering how Fitz is demisexual. Sex wasn't the principal thing at the forefront of his thoughts, yet rather he was stressed and uncertain over it. However, Addy is nothing but patient and kind, letting him know that they have time to continue sorting out what will work for themselves and what will not.

He threads his fingers together over my lower back. “What do you want me to do?”
His question catches me off guard, and I suck in a breath. I lean my forehead against his. “Can we stick to kissing and cuddling for now?”
“Anything you want.”

The two are also opposites, and it was everything and more I love in the trope. Addy is a 6'2, big, bearded man with a degree in arboriculture and is a tree surgeon, while Fitz is 5’4, went to culinary school in London, loves to cook, and has his own business where he bakes. Addy is also introverted and can come off as awkward, where he staggers between his words while addressing people, while Fitz is significantly more controlled, a social butterfly, and is much more calm. Yet, despite the physical differences in terms of height, weight, and appearances, the two worked so well. I adore it when one character is taller and stronger than the other character that they’re able to pick them up and carry them with no struggle. That happened a lot here, in which I always found myself aweing. There is also so much physical touch to the point where I cried. Perhaps it’s because I’m touch deprived or because physical touch is one of my love languages, but Oblivious showed me, once again, the intimacy of physical touch without sex. It was, simply put, beautiful.

“I’m not sure wanting to kiss me so much is going to be good for you,” I muse.
“Why not?”
“Having to lean down all the time is going to give you a bad back.”
He chuckles and then claims my mouth again. “It’ll be worth it. But I can also do this.”
I yelp as he picks me up, marches me over to the kitchen, and sits me on the worktop.
“Better,” he decides, nudging my knees apart so he can stand between my legs. Then he kisses me again without having to stoop.
I wrap my arms around his neck and enjoy his warmth and tenderness.

My only issue was how annoying the families got in the end with the conversations about a future wedding. While I generally love it when families and any secondary characters are supportive and encouraging, I try to avoid it when they interfere in and assume responsibility for a couple various things. Towards the end, as they begin asking both Addy and Fitz while the wedding will be, I had trusted either Addy, Fitz, or both would have advised them to pause and allow it to drop, or essentially left. I get why and how the family felt the way this did (since just Fitz and Adrian were oblivious), yet they had just barely gotten together romantically. Despite them still being best friends and their friendship not changing in a low way but instead growing, they were still new to the scene. It's even stated that the book has a "meddling family" but sadly, even knowing that, meddling characters always falter my enjoyment when it gets too much. This is definitely just a me thing though and not a big deal.

“You’re gorgeous,” I whisper.
“So are you.”

In the end, Oblivious has zero-angst and simply follows the new exploration of a journey between Fitz and Adrian as they explore their new feelings for each other. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for something sweet and cute with zero angst and zero unnecessary drama. Even the author states this in the blurb. And thank you Florence for thinking of me when you were reading this and recommending it to me. It was exactly what I love in a best friends to lovers story.

“That’s what makes it an easy pact to make, Fitz. I promise to spend my old age with you and every day before it. I can’t imagine my life without you in it. You’re my bestie.”
“Bestie? I thought only teenagers used that word.”
“Teenagers and us.” I lean down to kiss him. “You’re my bestie and the man I want to grow old with. Promise to grow old with me, Fitz?”

Probably one of the silliest books I've ever read. And I can't quite decide whether I mean that in a nice or not-so-nice way.
What I like so much about friends to lovers is that the protagonists already know each other really well and can respond to each other's feelings so well. Same here, it's really wonderful how Adrian and Fitz get on and are so perfect for each other as friends. I really like their harmony and all their silly conversations. I always had a big smile on my face.
Their jobs are also crazy perfect. Cake, so much cake and trees, oh well, that was beautiful.

“You need me to be calm right now. You need me to be a rock for you, and I can do that.”
“Not a rock.”
“Oh?”
“A tree. You’re a sturdy tree with deep roots and branches that can hold me tight.”
“What does that make you?”
He shrugs. “I dunno.”
“I think you’re the buds.”
🌳💞🌳

And then they discover that they are not quite as straight as they thought. They start experimenting. It's all perfectly fine, I also love how they give each other so much time and respect.
But with all due love, it just got a bit too silly for me. Both of them are definitely not teenagers, but they act way too much like it. There were parts where I was tearing my hair out thinking, “for goodness sake, google something or watch porn” ... my goodness, that was so stupid. I don't think it should have been like that. They're both so grown up and, as I said, they're so considerate of each other, I really didn't like this immature fuss about sex.
I was leaning towards three stars, but then the whole family had to get involved in marriage stuff, that's such an annoying thing for me...and then I had to read through the ceremony too...oh my, that was pain just to finish the book. The first half of the book was good, the second was torture, so 2.5? And I'm rounding up because I'm tired, I think.

uhm. i really don't know what to even say about this one? like, it was perfectly fine. 100% fluff with no conflict or angst... but that's also my main issue with it? the characters were bland, the dialogue was banal, and there was just no real substance to latch onto here, which made it an easy read, but also, for me, not a very satisfying one. even in super sweet stories, i need a bit of conflict of some kind to drive the story forward. here, though? absolutely none. everything just worked out perfectly and easily for them without any setbacks or issues... like, these two guys, who believed they were straight for 30+ years, just totally accept that they're actually -not- without even a second of hesitation?? neither of their families or friends is a little taken aback? i mean, i can suspend my disbelief, but this was just so.... nothingy nn. i needed something to make me care about this relationship lmao.

2 stars.

Reading Oblivious is like being hugged by a giant comfort blanket . There is no drama on it, only two best friends realizing they may be more than friendly feelings between them and taking their time to explore new horizonts.

As someone who loves unrequited love trope, this trope wasn’t going to be my fav - I mean, imagine the angst if only one of them had realized it twenty years sooner *dream face*. But Oblivious is what the book promises and damn, it delivers. I guess there is a bit of angst about the fact that they had probably never realized they could be more than friends if nobody had pointed them in the right direction…

While it felt a bit slow and didn’t blow my mind, it was a cute, heartwarming novella to relax after a draining day.

“Will you make us a cake when we’ve been together for forty years?”
“When are we counting from? When we met or when we stopped being oblivious?”

If ya’ll want a comfort read, this is it.

Not only is it so sweet it makes your teeth hurt (and NOT in the insta/unbelievable/over the top way), it’s also one of the most realistic depictions of two men who had never been with men… I’ve ever read. Usually with double bi-awakenings we get a little bit of “I don’t know what to do” but things magically fall into place. Which isn’t realistic. This takes that trope and says “how is it REALLY for two men figuring this out?” and it is SO refreshing and SO fun to read. This is one of my favorite reads from Colette. Sexy, sweet, funny, great side characters… just an enjoyable read.

This book isn't kinky at all, but it's the only one I've read so far that had the receiving partner bearing down on the top's dick during sex to enhance the top's pleasure and not just to make entry easier. I see it in porn, but apparently mm writers don't actually watch gay porn, lol

This is a super sweet best friends-to-lovers romance. The friendship between Adrian and Fitz is so easygoing and genuine that it's easy to see why they've fallen for each other.

Besties since childhood and now roommates, Adrian is 30 years-old and tall,6-foot-2. Fitz is also 30, years-old and short 5-foot-4. Neither are much for dating. But they are very close and rather "touchy-feely" with each other. How they could be so oblivious when it comes to the depth of their feelings until the family helps open their eyes...was beyond believable. These two had absolutely no clue what-so-ever what those "special feelings" that they were feeling were, and would have happily just gone on as they had been.

Eventually they figured it out, but their move from "friends to lovers" was just plain awkward. Somehow though it also came off as adorable...a lot of nervous, a bit thoughtful, and overall, somehow, absolutely perfect. Their now romantic relationship unfolded at an unhurried pace that seemed to be comfortable for both of them.

It's a quick, sweet, and angst-free story that will leave you smiling...and really wanting one of those cupcakes that Felix was known for. It's a demisexual story. which I have found very few of. The author did a wonderful job with the representation. If you’re into M/M Romances and are looking for a zero-angst love story, this is a great option.

For those that don't know the term: Demisexuality is a sexual orientation where people only experience sexual attraction to folks that they have close emotional connections with. Demisexual people only experience sexual attraction after an emotional bond has formed. The prefix “demi-” means “half” or “partly.”

Two best friends since high school, flat mates for ten years, both straight but rarely dates. Are the just Oblivious?
This story was so cute. All their friends and relatives seemed to see what they just didn’t but could one kiss be the wake up call they needed? The one kiss they agreed on to show everyone they were wrong?

I loved all the characters. Both main characters are charming and sweet. I loved the plot, I loved the cakes lol. I want the recipes.
This is also the perfect Valentine’s read!

I don't usually write reviews to my KU reads, for no other reason than I don't HAVE to, you know? But from time to time, a book comes along that really does scream at me to write the damn review, so here we go!

I found this book in the author's newsletter (so, note, they really do work!) and it sounded just the read I needed and it did not disappoint!

And if you follow my reviews, you'll find this bit funny!

First person, multi point of view AND present tense! And I didn't even notice til I was shelving it and getting ready to write this review!

It's sooooooooooooooooooooooooo good!

Fitz and Adrian, or Addy (but only FITZ is allowed to call him that!) have been best friends forever. Through school and uni, and now they share a house. And the sofa for cuddles during scary films. And then Adrian's sister says something, and both of them question what it is they really feel for each other.

And it is glorious! Watching these two men begin to see what the rest of their families (they were so funny!) can see, was truly beautiful! It was sweet and smexy. And so well written!

As they explore the feelings that Vanessa's question evokes, it really is astonishing that they didn't see it before! And when they explore the physical aspects? Oh my days! So good!!

And then we get to the cakes! I need to go on a diet just from reading!

The newsletter said this was no angst, and apart from them questioning things between them, there really isn't. They simply get to see just what was before them for so long.

So, in case you missed it,

I freaking loved this!

5 full and shiny stars!

The good
+ Both of them going from completely oblivious to interested at the same time
+ Their slow sexual explorations together. I like the way they took their time
+ Great communication between the main characters
+ The way everyone saw them as a couple but them, and how everyone was really confused everytime they suggested they were not, in fact, a couple
+ Using toys to build up to penetrative sex
+ The way they discussed and explored everything together
+ Lots of cuddling, even before they were together
+ Fitz offering to cook for Addy's date

The neutral
o The epilogue didn't really add anything to the story. I would have preferred one that was set further into the future

The bad
- Their families practically forced them to marry. Yeah, they'd been a 'couple' for a long time. Doesn't mean it's automatically time to get married. Or maybe they don't want to marry at all

I love sweet, low-angst romances. This book was right up my alley. I love how they were both equally inexperienced and took their time with each other. They were perfect together and I'm a sucker for great friendships in relationships and a heavy dose of cuddling. Would definitely recommend.

Quite satisfying double bi-demi-awakening, and the main thing was just them switching gears in their relationship from friends to more and slowly becoming more comfortable with the intimate side of things. This book is for ppl who side eye formerly "straight" characters who jump directly into anal sex. It gets a bump just for talking about stuff most books don't. Not perfect, but REFRESHING.

It has lots of really endearing exchanges and tree metaphors and even tho they do end up trying anal, it's not the first thing they go for and it is worked up to so thoughtfully and carefully. I don't know, it grew on me as I was reading. It does things that other books do that can be considered clichés or played out, but it doesn't just take them as givens? Like, there is size difference, and the smaller MC ends up as "the bottom" but they way they get there makes sense and they both try a lot of things before they get there. Even tho it is basically angst free, it still made me think 'why do we do rarely see these conversations and situations?'

Oblivious ranks up there as one of my new favorite friends-to-lovers stories. There's zero drama, no angst. It's all about Fitz and Adrian seeing their lifelong friendship in a new light.

I recently read the author's Alphabet of Desire series. I liked the first one okay, loved the second one, wasn't a fan of the last one. Oblivious is as far from being like that series as it can get.

Once Fitz and Adrian start seeing each other as more than friends, there's no 'rush, rush, let's jump into bed' scenario. They take their time learning. On top of not having ever been with another man before, they still have their friendship to focus on. What if they try as a real couple and it destroys that friendship?

I seriously loved this book. It was just what I needed. It's sweet. There's no drama. There's simply an amazing relationship that gradually moves up to another level. It was perfect.

What a joy to read! This was fluffy, sweet and adorable - loved it!
If want a book that will sweep you away from the horrors of the world right now and wrap you up a cosy cocoon this one if for you.
Addy and Fitz are the bestest of friends. They're are shocked to discover not only does everyone think they are perfect for each other but that they've basically been in a relationship for all these days.
I loved seeing them navigate moving their relationship from friends to boyfriends. Although they had some concerns they fully embraced their new state of being - lots of aww moments.

Loved it

I can't remember if I've read a twin bi-awakening story before but I'll remember this one.
I really liked how they carefully and sweetly explored their new dynamic.
There was fumbling and little stresses but that felt natural and necessary.
I particularly enjoyed the imagery and the cakes. They sound so tasty

This is a great story, I really enjoyed it. The characters were cute and I loved the chemistry and interaction between them. It's a straightforward friends to lovers book, in which Addy and Fitz carefully explore their attraction. So incredibly sweet

This was definitely a sweet book, almost sappily so. Still, I didn’t mind the zero angst, feel good nature that Fitz and Addy had. It was actually quite refreshing to not have to deal with the bi-panic or freak out over discovering you suddenly like guys. Fitz and Addy taking their relationship to the next level was almost seamless and expected.

One of the aspects I loved about this book was the realness surrounding not knowing exactly how everything would work in the bedroom. I loved their explorations together and their willingness to ask questions when they didn’t know something. It was sexy and real in a way you don’t often see in books. They took things at their own pace, but not in a glacial way so that we, as readers, didn’t get impatient with them. I also liked the highlight of conveying that not everyone likes the same thing in bed and that’s okay. Just because it’s expected, doesn’t mean it right for you. Addy was willing to speak up when something wasn’t right for him and I think it made their relationship stronger for it.

This was a beautiful book of discovery, exploration and a deep connection between two men that transcended friendship. Absolutely worth the read.

“I’m your tree,” I remind him in a quiet voice. “And you’re my blossom.”

This book is sweet, filled with friends who've been in love with each other forever but unaware of it, and lots of cake. There's zero conflict here, which edged on the border of sweetness overload, but as this is a shorter book to begin with, it just about works. These two are cute and the way they carefully explore their sexuality together through experimentation and conversation was really well done. I wouldn't say there's anything groundbreaking here, but if you need a soft, fluffy quick read, it's definitely recommended.

What a gorgeous story! Adrian and Fitz are delightful! I loved them as friends and seeing how attuned they were despite obviously complete opposites. I loved their complicity and support for one another, and I adored them when they realized they could be so much more than friends.

A no-angst, no rush shift in the relationship between two best friends who finally saw what they had under their noses, in a fun, sweet and romantic story that made me so, so happy. Definitely a recommended read.

A beautiful story where longtime friends become lovers and no one is surprised except the new couple. Fitz and Adrian have been not just friends but best friends for the past 20 years. They even live together in the same flat, have meals together, a snuggle on the couch watching tv. They’re very touchy-feely for two men who think they’re straight and have no interest in one another beyond the bonds of friendship. Then one day, everything changes and they can never go back to how things were between them.

This is one of the sweetest friends-to-lovers stories I’ve ever read. I absolutely love these characters and their chemistry is amazing, even when they’re “just friends.” It’s also very sexy and romantic. A joy to read, I couldn’t stop smiling.
