The Time Bubble #12

Cause of Death

Rate this book
Henry and Alice find themselves trapped in a deadly time loop in this latest instalment of The Time Bubble series.

When Henry Jones woke up on holiday in Fuerteventura, he didn’t expect to get burnt, drowned, or shot. Nor did he expect to be eaten by a mythical sea monster.

Making friends with Alice, the girl in the next apartment, the two of them try to piece together their patchy memories to establish how they ended up on the island.

Why have they been thrown back decades in time to their younger bodies?

Why is every day the same, yet different?

And why are they the only two people who can see what is going on?

This story is the twelfth part of an epic series exploring the time travel genre in original and innovative ways. The novels follow the main characters from youth to middle age as they jump forwards, backwards, and sideways into alternate worlds.

Jason Ayres just keeps getting better and better at writing these stories. This is now the 12th book at for much of it you could have skipped the first 11 but you will then get to a point in the book where you will wish that you had. So my advice is to go back and start with book 1 and work your way here.

Part of this reminds me of A Town Called Discovery by R.R. Haywood. In that book a person wakes up not knowing who or where he is and is killed over and over again. That then is where the book kind of departs the story. However they do both end up having been to the same place (you will understand if you read it but I hate spoilers)

So if you enjoyed the earlier books you will enjoy this one, if you like fun lighthearted time travel this one might be a little on the dark end but still pretty fun and you of course know that our protagonists will make it because they always do.

This book is an entertainingly easy read, if you can see past the author's political views. I would certainly not recommend reading this if you, like many, have lost loved ones to COVID or are still shielding due to medical issues.

I had previously read some of the time bubble books on Kindle and found them the kind of easy on the brain reading material that you can quickly get into and rattle through, as long as you can overlook the simplistic plotting - and the fact that the same protagonists end up in most books makes this even easier to get onto.

This book follows the same pattern of familiar characters in a different environment, with a murderous touch of Groundhog Day thrown into the mix.

Entertaining fare, but the lockdown sceptic, COVID denying views of the author - which do suit some of the characters, like the crude and boorish pub landlord, very well - do start to grate when even open minded, smart characters spend a disproportionate amount of time whingeing about "muzzles".

I have read all the Time Bubble series, I grab them as soon as they come out, and they just get better and better. This one I particularly enjoyed as Henry and Alice face a daily disaster, involving a volcano, a tsunami, a fireball, explosions, and a localized civil war. It’s difficult to write more without giving too much away, but I loved this book, I read it in one sitting and highly recommend it.

The time travel saga continues

I have enjoyed every single one of Jason Ayres books in this series. This is no exception and the only problem I had was trying to remember the main characters previous stories in detail - easily solved by rereading.
Bring on the next book please....

I enjoyed this but it did get a bit far-fetched at times. Yes I know it’s a time travel book but you’ll see what I mean. As always, some entertaining characters and it did hold my attention. It was some time since I read the previous books in the series and I had little recollection of the previous stories, so references to them were a bit lost on me.

This 12th in the series continues the good tradition. Many characters from earlier books feature in the story. Henry & Alice find themselves at an island retreat where they find a different kind of death in the last hours of the day. Hence the title.

Stuck in the Middle with You

Enjoyable vignette in the Time Bubble series as Vanessa wreaks revenge on Henry and Alice, finding ever more inventive methods of disposal.
