Smith has been asked to help with a case that no one wants to work. A girl’s gone missing and the most likely suspect is one of the Scotland Yard men.
He’s not a man to give a pass to police officers, but this will open himself, his wife, and his friends up to potential danger depending on who’s involved. Now the question is, what will it take for him to find the girl. How far will he go to catch the killer before Scotland Yard finds proof of the many, many laws he has broken? Or maybe Scotland Yard will turn on Smith and the tenuous peace between them will be broken. It’s a race of skill and trust as Smith tries to keep his family safe and Beatrice tries to keep Smith alive.
I've been reading Beth Byers books about Violet Carlyle and her friends from the beginning. The extension of her characters as the main protagonists in the Smith books are a touch of genius. Her foremost and strongest theme is about how friends can form a family and how this relationship is far more completing and loving than even blood relations. Smith's love and trust of Beatrice is unending and even though he is a rogue in every definition of the word, his intelligence and loyalty to his friends and to his assignments are all encompassing. In this terrible situation with a serial killer who is also a policeman ,the Smiths and their friends prove that their joint determination and cooperation brings down an arrogant killer to his great surprise. I absolutely love these mysteries.
This may be one of the best of them. Loved that Rita, Ham and Em were a part of the Smith team.
Got tired of the Violet Carlisle series w Vi and her patronizing attitude that the lot of them are really helping man or woman kind with their money while they indulge in massive amounts of clothes, jewels, dinners and jaunts. And tired of the lazy, giggling Denny and his lazy wife.
Bea and Smith are more real like Jack. Unfortunately he is besotted w Vi who is a wealthy, spoiled brat who's done good for a few when it benefitted her.
Still I recommend reading both the Violet Carlisle and the Smith series. One cant appreciate one without the other. I still want more Georgette and Janey though (Poison Pen series).
I read these books as soon as they are released. I’ve loved all of the Violet books as well. I do not believe I’d want to live during the roaring twenties. But the group of friends they have and the wonderful minds they all share is quite amazing. Smith is a devious mind all on his own. He often takes cases that most detective agencies would not. He is smart and he often drags his most clever wife into his cases sometimes without her actually being aware of it. I am always anxiously waiting for the next book in these series to read what is going to happen in their lives. They live very exciting and interesting times.
How do you fight when the bad guy wears a police uniform?
Smith has solved many crimes by working outside the law. Now there's a murderer raping and killing innocent girls, and all the evidence seems to be pointing to a policeman. Bea is determined to help her husband, especially after he comes home badly beaten. What can she do, even with the help of Rita and the annoying news reporter Emily? Beth Byers never disappoints with her short mysteries about Violet, Victor, and their friends, which now include Smith and Beatrice.
I was really surprised at the main story in this book, which was about Women and how strong they can be. I look forward to the next Beth Byers book with great anticipation.
Beatrice shines along with her friend Rita. Pregnancy isn't stopping them from solving the murders of two young woman and keeping the young woman that got away safe. Need to read the Violet Carlyle series and the Smith Investigates series to enjoy.
I’m really enjoying this new series. The main characters are side characters from the Violet Carlyle series. They’re interesting and different. I’m enjoying the series growth.
I hope Ms Byers writes more about Smith and Bea, I love this series. I love the banter, the friendship, the love and hate all rolled into one. These two are a match made in heaven. The angelic Smith and the dutiful beautiful Bea. Such a good read.
I am enjoying this new series so much. Familiar characters with engaging depth. I love the antipathy between Emily and Bea, but admire the way the come together for good cause. Ms. Byers, you're the pips.
In this adventure the author has manipulated, relieved, and ghen wound tight again the brain and it's visual constructions. Masterful in plot and character creation. Another example of the writer's true craft.
A gripping story, darker than the Vi series. As with Smith himself, one is left knowing that all may not be right in the world, but there are good guys (and dolls) trying to tip the scales towards justice.
Beatrice and Smith are totally interesting characters. Much more interesting than Jack and Vi. Serious entertainment and page turning fun. 100% reader participation required! Can't wait for the next one!!
Love this series. The characters are more believable than the super wealthy and also have secrets like everyone does. Also enjoy how Smith and Beatrice are in the circle of Violet Carlyle but this series focuses more on Smith and Beatrice.
This is my favorite book in this series so far. The mystery and adventure along with a side of humor. Just a fun book to read. My thanks to the author!
I just love Smith and Bea. They are written as a really believable couple. Both not perfect and seemingly mismatched but together they are a dynamic duo.
Really good, I like the characters they do make me chuckle. Smith is a devil but everyone loves him. He can go where the police can't. I really enjoy reading these books.
#44 I like this spin off series, but the story on this one was just too jumpy. The build up was rushed, the ending was rushed, there were loose threads that didn’t feel fully developed.
