Yukito Kishiro (Japanese: 木城ゆきと) is a Japanese manga artist born in Tokyo in 1967 and raised in Chiba. As a teenager he was influenced by the mecha anime Armored Trooper Votoms and Mobile Suit Gundam, in particular the designs of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, as well as the works of manga artist Rumiko Takahashi. He began his career at age 17, with his debut manga, Space Oddity, in the Weekly Shonen Sunday. He is best known for the cyberpunk series Battle Angel Alita.

Spoilers for the first series!

This omnibus is the start of a new Alita series, following the end of the previous nine-volume series, which took us all the way from her "rebirth" in the junkyards of the Scrapyard to her death, blown up by the nefarious Desty Nova.

Angel Reborn begins with Desty Nova rebuilding a cyborg body for Alita. He salvaged her brain, of course. From there, this long volume takes us to the sky city of Tiphares, and has Alita participating in a revolution between the Millennials and the Boomers (they aren't called that, but imagine a bunch of Millennials saying "Ok boomer" as they slaughter their parents), trying to find her old friend Lou, and becoming increasingly bitchy.

Yeah, this is not the sweet anime girl we met way back when Alita was brought to life by Doc Ido. She's had a hard life. She's seen a lot of friends die, she's had her body blown to bits more than once, and now she's probably never going to see any of her friends again. She's become a cold, callous warrior who only occasionally shows a spark of that humanity that made her so lovable when she was a cute little unstoppable death machine back on Earth.

Here, she is drawn into bigger and bigger spheres as we learn about the Ladder, and the interstellar government that has been ruling the solar system, oblivious to the affairs of the crawling ants who live down on the ground.

There's lots of action, Alita has to fight ever more formidable foes with her Panzer Kunst, and the volume ends with Alita still stuck out in space trying to figure out the politics of these crazy, super-advanced post-human Jovians and Venusians and such. Something tells me she's gonna wreck shit, because she always does.

Last Order's a bit of a step down after the original Alita, but to be fair, it had a long way to come down. It's still entertaining in its own right.

I'm going to refrain from rating until I've finished the series.

This start to the next Alita series is much different than I expected. The artwork is very different -much cleaner, but less impactful.

The story focus has changed too. We left off with a big, shocking secret discovered about Tiphares and the people, a secret that drives them insane when they learn about it. The start of this series is a year after Gunnm ending - the secret gets out, causing chaos and destruction on Tiphares. So Alita's world is about to get much bigger. No longer is it just a scrapyard town under a seemingly utopian city. We've gone much bigger, involved in space politics now and we especially focus on Mars (Alita's past). I'm very curious about what it'll be like for Alita to return to Mars, but I don't quite like the world-building. Lots of space politics and details about how their science works (I either skip or skim). Lastly, Alita is becoming more bloodthirsty and ruthless, caring more for what and whom she likes than morality.

Obra recomendada para amantes de la ciencia ficción que busquen algo diferente, pero con matices:

He recuperado la lectura de este clásico de la ciencia ficción y el manga 9 años después de abandonarlo por aburrimiento; y es que leer un manga (en proceso de escritura) puede llevar al lector a esperar hasta 12 años para conocer el final de la historia... (2004-2016); y ese, sin lugar a dudas, es el principal problema de la obra. No obstante, creo que merece la pena en occidente, os cuento por qué:

Lo que Sí:

- Si leíste la primera parte (Gunnm: Alita Ángel de Combate), te gustó y te quedaste con ganas de más: esta secuela cumple todos los requisitos.
- Uno de los motivos por los que (en mi caso) abandoné la lectura de mangas fue porque los géneros predominantes (y más exportados) son el shonen y el shojo, es decir, para un público de 12-18 años. Aun así, esta serie sigue tratando temáticas que siguen siendo de mi interés, incluso interpreto mejor con el paso de los años. Eso sí, conforme avanza la obra, se desdibujan los aspectos más filosóficos, intimistas o existencialistas para dar paso a mucha acción y combates estilo Dragon Ball (cosa que a mí me agotó).
- Por otro lado, me encantó que Gunnm Last order haga referencia a muchos aspectos occidentales: tradición católica, clásicos de la literatura y de la historia universal (espada de Damocles, Alejandro Magno y muchos ejemplos más en los que ahora no caigo) y eso creo que es algo que gusta e interesa a un público adulto y occidental.
- La protagonista: Gally/Yoko es una filósofa sin saberlo. La historia trata de una ciborg que ha perdido la memoria y está emperrada en recuperarla y, a su vez, en demostrar que es humana, con lo cuál, no para de hacerse preguntas sobre el por qué de su existencia. Es decir, hay filosofía por un tubo para el que sepa entender las referencias (nihilismo, budismo, Platón... Y largo etcétera).
-Asimismo, resultan muy interesantes las notas a pie de página con otro tipo de referencias a estilos de lucha, artes marciales, tradición china y japonesa, armamento militar, cuentos de la cultura popular asiática como los de la rata y los gatos, etc

Lo que No:

- EL TIEMPO: El principal problema es 'el tiempo'. No se trata solo de que la obra es muy extensa, sino que ha habido demasiados lapsos de tiempo desde que se concibe hasta que se termina (¡12 años!), y tanto autor como lectores cambiamos. Por lo tanto el ritmo y los arcos narrativos pasan por tantas fases que uno se termina perdiendo (y eso que yo la leí del tirón) y la sensación de un avanzar-retroceder todo el tiempo. La sensación que tiene el lector es: ¿pero esto termina o no?
- SUBTRAMAS: el autor se va por los cerros de Úbeda con los secundarios: se pierde y te empieza a contar historias que te dan absolutamente igual para la trama principal (y que casi las podría haber editado sueltas como fue el caso de ASHEN VICTOR).
- Hacía tantísimo que no leía manga... que la lectura por tomos se me ha hecho pesada. Prefiero mil veces un volumen único. Incluso para hacer reseñas me parece muy incómodo: ¿tengo que añadir aquí 20 libros (tomos) para una única historia?, ¿Os imagináis hacer reseñas de libros capítulo por capítulo? No lo veo.
- EL FINAL: ¿en serio, señor Yukito Kishiro, después de tantísima vuelta, tanto tiempo, tantas páginas y tanto de todo... me dejas ESE cabo suelto para hacer otra secuela o precuela? ¡MÁTAME, camión!

En definitiva: Creo que es de lo mejorcito dentro del género Ciencia ficción y Manga, pero se tardó demasiado en escribir y se desbibujaron algunas cosas respecto a la idea de la que se partía. Asimismo, es demasiado largo (pero te puedes saltar partes).

It's been a long time since I read the original run of Battle Angel Alita, and though I considered re-reading those books before diving into this new series, I decided to start here without a refresher. With this first volume, my impression is pretty positive. The artwork is gorgeous, with clean lines and shading that provides clarity to the scenes rather than murkiness. The panel layouts are logical, with a felicitous mix of large and small panels, interspersed with full pages to showcase detailed backgrounds and environments. With the exception of the absurd pseudo-science babble about "Karmatron Dynamics Theory", the means by which Alita is brought back into a new body is acceptable if a bit far-fetched. The new characters that are being introduced in this volume have some promise, and hopefully Yukito Kishiro will be able to bring to them the kind of depth he brought to his characters in the original series. I do wish he would stay away from trying to bring actual science into his fantasy world, via the footnotes, because every time he does so, he reveals his egregious misconceptions about some pretty basic concepts. As an example, one of his footnotes claims that information could be encoding in the random motion of molecules, which belies his ignorance of what randomness actually means.
But putting all my gripes aside, I enjoyed reading this volume, with its intriguing story line, and well paced action sequences. And, of course I should mention, the gore - Kishiro still draws plenty of grisly wounds, smashed heads, evisceration, and blood splatters which are part and parcel of the Battle Angel Alita world.

This story arc/sequel series sure starts off with a bang (literally, if you count how it picks up from volume nine of Battle Angel Alita). From looks at Alita's distant past, to a startling turn of events on Tiphares, to a real sense of dread and mystery, all wrapped up in some exquisite action scenes. Alita's unexpected journey to Tiphares has thrown open the door for all sorts of new adventures. It would have been easy for this to have been just a cash grab, or beating a dead horse, akin to the Majin Buu saga in Dragonball Z--a soulless husk that's just giving the characters a reason to fight some more. But Last Order avoids this with the way it starts: with the tantalizing hope that Alita might be able to reconnect to her past. On Mars. (This is teased in the first few pages, so it's not much of a spoiler.) She's got something worth fighting for, and that makes all the difference.

This strong start is buttressed by some gorgeous art, that's somehow managed to improve over the original run (which was already great). The fights feel alive and kinetic, shadowy corridors feel fittingly ominous, the insane gleam in the eyes of a maniac is perfectly chilling--this series is a visual feast, so far.

If you didn't want Alita's journey to end where it did, you've got a lot to look forward to, if volume one of Last Order is any indication. You'd be remiss not to pick this up, if you're a fan.

Today is a sad, sad day. The original Battle Angel was my favorite graphic novel of all time (since I was a teen too). It was drawn so amazingly well and written with such dark human emotion. A masterpiece in my book. So when I heard Kishiro (who ended the series abruptly) would start again, I was elated. But when I started reading this, I was crushed. Last Order has lost ALL the elements that made the original so special. The art is so simple it border-lines on bad (due to him moving over to drawing on a computer). While the action and movement is still well done, the style has changed. It is much less creative. And finally, the storytelling is missing all the character driven plot. All those interesting characters that you could sympathize, that were sad, that were real. Here the story is just a jumble. Nothing focused. Nothing interesting. Just about guns and fights. Battle Angel has become simply a Japanese comic for boys. Such a sad end for such a (once) great series.

Last Order pales in comparison to the original Battle Angel Alita (Gun Dream / Gunnm) series, which was so deep in its art, darkness, emotion, and hope in half as many volumes. This unnecessarily long series has very little coherent story even though it tries to invent an interplanetary community, and focuses way too much on endless fighting with bizarre creatures and none of the depth and character development that made the fights mean something in Gunnm. Reading both series is like watching an adult who fought so hard to discover him/herself reverting back into a violent, hormone-driven teenager. Don't bother, stick to Gunnm.

Ήταν Αύγουστος του 2019 όταν αποφάσισα να γνωρίσω το είδος του manga και έπιασα στα χέρια μου τον πρώτο από τους εννιά τόμους της ιστορίας του Yukito Kishiro με γενικό τίτλο Battle Angel Alita. Δύο μήνες μετά η προσπάθεια ολοκληρώθηκε. Με την υπόθεση να μπλέκει τη δυστοπία με την ουτοπία και τη φαντασία με την πραγματικότητα ο mangaka χρειάστηκε 31 κεφάλαια για να γνωρίσει στο κοινό του την ιστορία της Αλίτα. Ενός cyborg χωρίς μνήμη που βρίσκεται πεταμένη στα σκουπίδια της δυστοπικής πόλης Scrapyard από τον επιστήμονα Daisuke Ido. Ο οποίος της δίνει όχι μόνο ένα νέο σώμα αλλά και μια δεύτερη ευκαιρία στη ζωή. Η Αλίτα γίνεται κυνηγός καταζητούμενων και μέσα από μια σειρά περιπετειών έρχεται αντιμέτωπη με τη σκληρή ζωή στη γη, τον έρωτα, τη φιλία, την καλοσύνη, την κακία και με το μυστικό της αιωρούμενης πόλης Tiphares βαδίζοντας ταυτόχρονα τον δρόμο της αυτογνωσίας και έχοντας ως στόχο την απάντηση στο ερώτημα: «Ποια είμαι;;».

Αποφάσισα να διαβάσω το manga με αφορμή την ομότιτλη ταινία του James Cameron. Ήθελα πριν τη δω να γνωρίζω την ιστορία για να δω κατά πόσο οι Αμερικανοί παραγωγοί έμειναν πιστοί σε αυτή ή παρενέβησαν αλλάζοντας της τα φώτα. Αρχικά δεν είχα σκοπό να την ολοκληρώσω αφού δεν είμαι μεγάλη θαυμάστρια των ιστοριών που περιγράφονται τόσο με το λόγο όσο και με τις εικόνες. Οι σκέψεις αυτές όμως ανατράπηκαν γρήγορα αφού όχι μόνο τελείωσα τους τόμους που συνδέονταν με την ταινία αλλά προχώρησα φτάνοντας μέχρι το φινάλε. Η γραφή του Kishiro, τα μηνύματα της ιστορίας, οι τομείς που εξερεύνησε αλλά και το σχέδιο του με έκαναν να θέλω να μάθω και την παραμικρή λεπτομέρεια για την πρωταγωνίστρια και τον κόσμο της. Το φινάλε μου άφησε καλές εντυπώσεις δημιουργώντας ένα ακόμα στόχο. Που ήταν το διάβασμα την επόμενη χρονιά της συνέχειας της ιστορίας που είχε τον γενικό τίτλο Battle Angel Alita: Last Order.

Και να’ μαι λοιπόν έξι μήνες μετά την τελευταία μου κριτική να παρουσιάζω μια νέα που να αφορά τη συνέχεια μιας υπόθεση που φαινομενικά είχε ολοκληρωθεί! Το Battle Angel Alita: Last Order αποτελείται από 19 τόμους και 129 κεφάλαια. Ο Kishiro χρειάστηκε 14 χρόνια για να τo ολοκληρώσει αφού το πρώτο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάστηκε το 2000 - 5 χρόνια μετά το τέλος της αρχικής ιστορίας - και το τελευταία το 2014. Όπως ο ίδιος εξήγησε σε συνέντευξη του όταν άρχισε να σχεδιάζει την ιστορία της Αλίτα δεν είχε σκοπό να της δώσει το φινάλε του ένατου τόμου. Το έντονο στρες όμως επηρέασε αρνητικά την υγεία του με αποτέλεσμα την απόφαση απότομης διακοπής της ιστορίας. Και επειδή δεν ήθελε να αφήσει το κοινό με το παράπονο του ανολοκλήρωτου έδωσε ένα φινάλε βιαστικό για εκείνον. Κάποια χρόνια μετά που ένιωσε και πάλι δυνατός αποφάσισε να πιάσει την ιστορία της Αλίτα από τον ένατο τόμο αγνοώντας όμως το τελευταία κεφάλαια. Έτσι ανέτρεψε το τέλος και ξεκίνησε ξανά τις περιπέτειες προς την αυτογνωσία και την ωριμότητα του πιο διάσημου χαρακτήρα του.

Όταν έπιασα στα χέρια μου τον πρώτο τόμο που τιτλοφορείται Angel Reborn από το εξώφυλλο και μόνο ήξερα πως η ιστορία θα είναι δέκα φορές πιο σκοτεινή και βίαιη και πως ο χαρακτήρας της Αλίτα θα είναι πιο μαχητικός, δυναμικός και σοβαρός. Τέρμα με λίγα λόγια η αθωότητα που τη διέκρινε ως ένα βαθμό στη μητέρα-ιστορία. Τα έξι κεφάλαια του επιβεβαίωσαν τις σκέψεις μου. Ο τίτλος συμβαδίζει απόλυτα με την υπόθεση. Η Αλίτα ξαναγεννιέται σε νέο σώμα πολύ πιο δυνατό από το προηγούμενο και σε ένα κόσμο περισσότερο βίαιο και τρομαχτικό από πριν. Μόνο που αυτή τη φορά δεν δείχνει χαμένη μιας και μέρος της μνήμης της από τα παιδικά της χρόνια επανέρχεται κάνοντας την πιο δυνατή και με μεγαλύτερη αυτοπεποίθηση στον εαυτό της. Αν και τα πρώτα τρία κεφάλαια είναι χαοτικά αφού προσπαθείς ως αναγνώστης να καταλάβεις τί συμβαίνει, τί έχει κρατήσει και τί απορρίψει ο Kishiro, τα τρία τελευταία σε αποζημιώνουν αφού η ροή γίνεται πιο ομαλή και παύει η τρικυμία στο μυαλό. Ο τόμος αυτός είναι εισαγωγικός στη νέα ιστορία, θέτει τις βάσεις για αυτό που θα ακολουθήσει ενημερώνοντας τον αναγνώστη πως αυτή τη φορά δεν θα μείνουμε μόνο στα όρια της γης και των δύο πόλεων που ήδη γνωρίζουμε, θα μεταφερθούμε και εκτός της γήινης ατμοσφαίρας, θα γνωρίσουμε άλλους κόσμους και θα μάθουμε τί συνέβη στη μικρή Αλίτα. Συνοδοιπόροι μας σε αυτό θα είναι δύο βασικά πρόσωπα: η Αλίτα και ο τρελό-επιστήμονας που ποτέ δεν πεθαίνει Desty Nova.

Για τη βαθμολογία ακολούθησα το ίδιο σκεφτικό με το Battle Angel Alita. Βαθμολογούσα το κάθε κεφάλαιο ξεχωριστά και μετά έβγαζα τον μέσο όρο. Η δομή της κριτικής μου επίσης θα είναι σαν αυτές της μητέρας-ιστορίας. Θα έχει την εισαγωγή με γενικές σκέψεις, θα ακολουθεί ο σχολιασμός του κάθε κεφαλαίου και θα κλείνει με το γενικό συμπέρασμα για όλο τον τόμο. Ας δούμε λοιπόν το κάθε κεφάλαιο χωριστά και πώς έφτασα να δώσω τρία αστέρια.

Phase 1: My first Memory (⅖). Τρικυμία εν κρανίω. Μόνο έτσι μπορώ να χαρακτηρίσω το πρώτο κεφάλαιο του τόμου. Καθόλη τη διάρκεια έψαχνα να δω τί μένει και τί φεύγει από το φινάλε της μητέρας-ιστορίας ενώ πολλά, πάρα πολλά ερωτήματα, έκαναν την εμφάνιση τους. Η υπόθεση χωρίζεται ουσιαστικά σε δύο μέρη. Στο πρώτο βρισκόμαστε στο Zalem -μέσα σε όλα άλλαξαν και τα ονόματα. Η έκδοση χρησιμοποιεί τα ιαπωνικά ονόματα και έτσι το Tiphares έγινε Zalem και η Alita, Gally - όπου ο Desty Nova μαζί με τον βοηθό του τον Roscoe αναγεννά την Gally. Ύπνος βαθύς με πήρε αφού η ανήθικη ιατρική του Nova με φρίκαρε και έτρεξα μακριά. Ο τύπος χρησιμοποιεί τη γενετική για τα πειράματα του όσον αφορά το κάρμα και όχι για να βοηθήσει. Με λίγα λόγια ο ψυχάκιας Nova καλά κρατεί και δεν πρόκειται να γλιτώσουμε από αυτόν. Ο μόνος που λίγο μου κίνησε το ενδιαφέρον ήταν ο Roscoe. Ποιος είναι;; Καλός; Κακός;; Τρελός;; Λογικός;; Και ενώ το πρώτο μέρος με κούρασε το δεύτερο μου έδωσε το κίνητρο να ολοκληρώσω το κεφάλαιο και να θέλω να προχωρήσω στο επόμενο. Όσο ο παλαβός κάνει τα πειράματα του το μυαλό της Gally θυμάται. Πηγαίνει πίσω στο παρελθόν όταν ήταν ακόμα κοριτσάκι. Αλλά η ανάμνηση δεν είναι καλή αφού έχει χάσει τους γονείς της και άνθρωποι κατακτητές την τρομοκρατούν επιχειρώντας να τη στείλουν ουσιαστικά στο θάνατο. Και εδώ βέβαια υπάρχει σύγχυση αφού νέα ερωτήματα ξεπηδούν: Η Gally είχε μηχανικό σώμα από μικρή;; Είχε και σκύλο;; Ποια είναι η Έρικα;; Την διάσημη πολεμική τεχνική της τη δίδαξε γυναίκα;; Γήινοι κατέστρεψαν τον πλανήτη της μετά από απόβαση σε αυτόν;; Το κεφάλαιο κλείνει μελαγχολικά με στοιχεία που δεν μπορούν να λείπουν από μια ιστορία του Kishiro: αίμα, μάχες και βία.

Phase 2: What has awoken?(1,5/5). Η σύγχυση μεγαλώνει. «Τί ξύπνησε;;» αναρωτιέται ο τίτλος. Για ακόμα μία φορά η ηρωίδα αναγεννάτε σε νέο σώμα και με νέες δυνάμεις. Μόνο που αυτή τη φορά οι αναμνήσεις της είναι περισσότερες και της δίνουν το κουράγιο να συνεχίσει την έρευνα της. Πριν από αυτό όμως πρέπει να καταλάβει που βρίσκεται και τί συμβαίνει αφού το πρώτο πράγμα που βλέπει μπροστά της είναι έναν αποκεφαλισμένο Nova! Πάλι πέθανε ο τρελός;; Για τα καλά αυτή τη φορά άραγε;; Ή θα μας εκπλήξει;; Το κεφάλαιο αυτό μεγάλωσε τις απορίες μου για το τί ακριβώς συμβαίνει. Γίνονταν όλα πολύ γρήγορα και δεν μπορούσα να επεξεργαστώ τις πληροφορίες. Το μόνο που νομίζω πως κατάλαβα είναι πως η ιστορία ξεκινά από το σημείο που η Gally εκτινάχθηκε και φαινομενικά πέθανε. Διαγράφονται τα δύο τελευταία κεφάλαια και ο επίλογος που αναγεννήθηκε σε ανθρώπινο σώμα. Ο Nova παίρνει τα απομεινάρια της και την ανασταίνει ενώ αυτός δολοφονείται. Από ποιόν;; Σίγουρα όχι από τη Gally, σωστά;; Ποιος είναι ο Jim και τί τρέχει με το ρομπότ αυτό που ξαφνικά αρχίζει να την κυνηγά;; Το τέλος είναι κουφό αφού η Gally βρίσκεται να αιωρείται στον αέρα!! Το μόνο ενδιαφέρον στο κεφάλαιο ήταν η ανάμνηση για τη Layla τη δασκάλα της ηρωίδας στο Panzer Kunst. Που βρίσκεται;; Τί συνέβη με εκείνη;;
«Even when you find yourself in a situation that you cannot understand just accept it as it is. Do not rush observe and secure your position». Οι φιλοσοφικές φράσεις του Kishiro κάνουν δυναμική επιστροφή!

Phase 3: It’s not a robot (⅗). Αρχίζει το ξεκαθάρισμα και η ιστορία φαίνεται πως έχει προορισμό. Ο Jim είναι ο Roscoe και αυτός σκότωσε τον Nova! Ο οποίος αποκάλυψε στους πολίτες της ουτοπίας τα πειράματα που γίνονταν στο μυαλό τους και το ότι τους είχαν ουσιαστικά φακελωμένους. Όλο αυτό το αίμα και η βία, οι μάχες ��αι τα ρομπότ οφείλονται στο Nova και στο τρελαμένο του μυαλό! Πάλι έβαλε το χεράκι του και σκόρπισε το θάνατο και τον όλεθρο! Ο Jim βέβαια δείχνει να ακολουθεί τα βήματα του αφού θέλει να εξολοθρεύσει όλους όσους δεν έχουν μυαλό αλλά τσιπ στον εγκέφαλο και να χτίσει μια υγιή κοινωνία. Λίγο έως πολύ απόγονος του Χίτλερ μου κάνει εμένα. Η Gally αρνείται να τον βοηθήσει αφού όπως πολύ σωστά λέει υπάρχουν άνθρωποι με μυαλό και όχι τσιπ που χειραγωγούνται και που προκαλούν τον θάνατο. Και υπάρχουν άνθρωπο με τσιπ που είναι γενναίο και καλοί. Η ίδια μάλιστα θέλει να ψάξει έναν τέτοιο: τη Lou! Επιτέλους ακούγεται το όνομα ενός γνωστού χαρακτήρα. Κάτι που μου προκάλεσε χαρμολύπη αφού από τη μια ελπίζω να τη δω από την άλλη αυτό θα σημαίνει πως το φινάλε που ήξερα για αυτή έχει ανατραπεί;

Phase 4: It’s what I long for (⅘). Μάχες, βία, αίμα , σκοτωμοί, κλώνοι και μια αναγέννηση συνθέτουν το κεφάλαιο που είναι και το καλύτερο μέχρι στιγμής του τόμου. Από τη μια η Gally έρχεται αντιμέτωπη με τρεις κλώνους της και έτσι ο Kishiro συνεχίζει την ιστορία αυτή που είχε ξεκινήσει όταν έγινε μέλος των πρακτόρων του Zalem, ο Nova εμφανίζεται ΞΑΝΑ (!!) για να τις θέσει τα διλήμματα του και να την κάνει πάλι πειραματόζωο στα σχέδια του και από την άλλη ο Jim ξεκινά μια μάχη με εκείνους του κατοίκους που έχουν τσιπ και όχι μυαλό και που έχουν ακριβώς το ίδιο σχέδιο με εκείνον. Να καταλάβουν το Zalem και να κυβερνήσουν αφού θεωρούν τους εαυτούς τους ως την ανώτερη φυλή. Άλλοι Χίτλερ δηλαδή εμφανίστηκαν. Η ουτοπία του Zalem έχει μετατραπεί σε μια κόλαση εμφυλίου. Ποιος θα επικρατήσει;;

Phase 5: Notice Me (⅗). Πρόσεξε με, φωνάζει ο κλώνος της Gally ενώ μάχη ξεκινά μεταξύ τους. Την ίδια στιγμή ο εμφύλιος συνεχίζεται με τον Jim να στριμώχνεται άσχημα. Το σχέδιο στο κεφάλαιο αυτό είναι εξαιρετικό! Λεπτομερέστατο και ανατριχιαστικό. Η βία είναι σε πολύ υψηλά επίπεδα και στα σίγουρα το manga δεν ενδείκνυται για τις πολύ μικρές ηλικίες. Εξερευνά θέματα που αφορούν πειράματα στους ανθρώπους και φακέλωμα των στοιχείων τους όπως επίσης θέματα ύπαρξης που ανοίγουν τους ορίζοντες της σκέψης σου αλλά όλα αυτά όσο ενδιαφέροντα κι αν είναι συνδέονται με τη χρήση υπερβολικής βίας την οποία ένα παιδικό μυαλό μπορεί να μην μπορέσει να την επεξεργαστεί σωστά. Για αυτό κρατήστε μακριά τα παιδιά. Δεν είναι παιδικό, διασκεδαστικό ή ψυχαγωγικό manga.

Phase 6: Like turning off a television (⅗). Μια νέα συμμαχία δημιουργείται με στόχο την αναζήτηση μιας αγαπημένης φίλης ενώ ο πρώτος θάνατος βασικού χαρακτήρα συμβαίνει. Τα πάντα είναι στον αέρα για το μέλλον του Zalem ενώ ο Kishiro με την αναφορά στο Jeru -Kithares στη μητέρα ιστορία - κλείνει το μάτι στον αναγνώστη πως έρχεται εξερεύνηση και άλλων πόλεων και πώς θα μεταφερθούμε και εκτός γης. Αν δεν έχετε διαβάσει το Battle Angel Alita μην διαβάσετε το manga αυτό. Θα μπερδευτείτε ενώ δεν θα μπορέσετε να συνδέσετε αρκετά στοιχεία που παραπέμπουν στη μαμά-ιστορία. Δεν είναι μόνο η αναφορά που γίνεται στη Lou ή οι τρεις κλώνοι της Gally είναι και άλλα από την παρουσία του Nova μέχρι τη θύμηση του Hugo. Η Gally θυμήθηκε και έκλαψε για εκείνον αλλά για τον Figure Four δεν έχει πει ακόμα τίποτα. Ούτε και για τον Ido. Δεν θα αναφερθούν καθόλου άραγε;; Το τέλος είναι ανατρεπτικό όπως περιμένεις εξάλλου από τον Kishiro.

Με το Angel Reborn ο mangaka θέλησε να κάνει μια νέα αρχή στην ιστορία της ηρωίδας του διαγράφοντας στοιχεία που δεν του άρεσαν και κρατώντας εκείνα που θα τον βοηθούσαν να πάει την υπόθεση ένα βήμα παραπέρα. Από την αρχή ξεκαθαρίζει πως έχει δύο βασικούς χαρακτήρες: τη Gally που αναζητά τον εαυτό της μέσω της αποκάλυψης του παρελθόντος της και τον Nova που αναζητά απαντήσεις για το κάρμα μέσα από τα πειράματα και τον πόνο των άλλων. Παράλληλα δηλώνει πως σκοπεύει να εξερευνήσει ακόμα περισσότερο το παρελθόν του κόσμου της ιστορίας. Κάτι που με ενδιέφερε από την μαμά-ιστορία και έτσι νιώθω χαρά και ενθουσιασμό που θα μας δώσει καλύτερες εξηγήσεις με περισσότερες λεπτομέρειες αφού ομολογώ πως η εξήγηση στο Battle Angel Alita ήταν βιαστική. Δυστυχώς από τα νέα πρόσωπα που εμφανίστηκαν κανένα δεν μου τράβηξε το ενδιαφέρον. Βέβαια δεν μας δόθηκε η ευκαιρία και να τα γνωρίσουμε αφού είναι απλώς δίπλα στη Gally χωρίς να ξέρουμε κάτι σημαντικό για εκείνους. Για την ώρα πάντως δεν με νοιάζουν. Αυτό που όμως ελπίζω είναι παλαιοί χαρακτήρες να κάνουν την εμφάνιση τους. ⅗ λοιπόν για το Angel Reborn αφού αν και αρχικά με δυσκόλεψε στο τέλος κατάφερε να με παρασύρει στα νέα δεδομένα κάνοντας με να ανυπομονώ για τη συνέχεια.

Продолжение скорее разочаровывает, чем воодушевляет. По двум причинам: рисунок и судьба Залема/Тифареса. Еще вчера я хвалила на все лады рисунок в оригинальном Боевом Ангеле, и остаюсь при своем мнении, а вот Last Order, к сожалению, предлагает слишком много компьютеризации. Это дело вкуса, но для меня часть очарования потеряна, когда все идеально выглажено.
И небесный город, что в прошлом волшебно играл на контрасте с городом-помойкой, приобрел сюжетное развитие под стать какому-нибудь остросюжетному янг-эдалту. Каким образом за несколько дней все дошло до такой эскалации и многолетняя утопия слилась в канализацию? Это даже не списать на извечное желание людей играть в войнушку. Такое скоропостижное переключение неправдоподобно, за один день из амеб в изощренных маньяков не превращаются. Очень жду логичное объяснение (например, влияние извне или откровенный дефект мозгов).

А еще главный мэд саентист. Джокер, раз за разом выпрыгивающий из коробочки. Судя по последним томам, примерно раз в 300 страниц он чудесным образом возвращается к существованию (объясняя это своими изобретениями). После очередного спасения вся эта тема начинает выглядеть как минимум странно. Например, неужели он единственный владеет этой пресловутой технологией? И как вообще его изобретения сопоставимы с уровнем развития науки – не берет же он своих роботов из воздуха? Очень надеюсь, что его гениальность и живучесть имеют объяснение, а не просто because. Алиту в расчет не берем, протагонисту положено несколько раз воскреснуть, тем более киберпанк обязывает :р

In the sequel series to Battle Angel Alita, Yukito Kishiro takes a step back from the ending and goes down a different path instead.

If you have read the original series (and you definitely should before reading Last Order), we saw the series end with Alita sacrificing herself and bringing a semblance of peace between Tiphares and the cities below. However Kishiro envisions a different path where Alita is destroyed by Desty Nova and rebuilt in the future. She wakes up with a upgraded body, even more so than her last iteration, and is now in the middle of intergalactic power struggles and situations. I think this was a good move by Kishiro who gives the book now many avenues to explore. From the current day politics and happenings, to Alita's past on Mars, now it's all open for exploration.

Now while the possibilities now are definetley a plus, this volume did feel... like a step back in many ways. Alita is much more reserved and battle hardened, so we miss out on her personality, which in the early volumes of Alita, was a very charming and efficient way to endear her to us. Also, where the previous series had a great cast of characters, this one has characters that feel like they are disposable, and certainly are disposed of in this volume. In other words, this book so far has less for us to hang onto emotionally.

However, I'm definitely giving Kishiro the benefit of the doubt, as the last series was really good. I look forward to see where he takes Alita from here.

3.5/5 -rating for the entire Last Order series.

I really loved the philosophical aspect to this series. It dwells on questions like what does it truly mean to be human, what is the point of living, if you could bring someone back from the dead, would it be ethical to do so? and much more. It doesn't fully explore all of these ideas, but it does dive very deep into most of them and if you like these kind of stories you will love this.

Unfortunately, it's not all about the philosophy, and there are some moments where what happens hinges on whether you believe some of the explanations that feel sometimes very deus ex-machina.
The whole tournament arc in this series is also more of a letdown for me, it felt dragged out, I would have loved if the story focused more on the philosophy and less on fighting between robots, but to some people it is the opposite, so I won't complain too much about it, it was fine, some of the fights were very good and the art is certainly top tier.

There are some other reveals that I won't spoil but they were very unexpected and made you rethink what manga you're reading. I love Sci-fi and the tech part was good, it's most likely not hard sci-fi although it tries to be, but from what I've read in the past some of the things that happen are nearly impossible.

the first elita manga was one of my favorites, the second series is basically a battle shonen arc with some made up fighting powers in a jojo bizarre adventure style of memes.. the author remained unfocused with convoluted plotlines and absurdity.. giving kabbalistic names to stuff did not save it, also the main character alita gets such a plot armor it kills all of the tension, very disappointing.

A gritty and amusing romp through post-apocalyptic techno horrors and social degradation. The visual action is hard to follow sometimes, but the characters' voices and peculiar motivations more than make up for it. Funnily enough, the manga's footnotes explaining the various physics based weapons means this technically counts as an educational read!

Même si on peut justifier plein de choses par la technologie dans un monde cybernétique futuriste, docteur nova peut bien aller se faire foutre avec ses apparitions où il vient faire le deus ex machina ça va gentiment me casser les couilles si cela continue comme ça.

While it contains several interesting concepts, it’s very dry and cerebral, lacking the emotional impact of the original series. This is evident in both the writing and especially the art, which has a sterile, mechanical quality to it. A shame.

Disappointment. Started reading the series after finishing the excellent original series, the only thing common with the original are few names, everything else is different and for most parts for the worse.

While the first series is story and character driven with not a singe dull moment, this one is only about stupid battles which just keep's dragging. Alita is not really the center character anymore and she is missing most of the times,her character is regressing instead of developing (addition of tail and wings while making her more stupid !!!). Even the "A" series seem so lame, No.11 and No.12 cannot be the clones of Alita.

While the idea of shifting the action to space is a cool idea, the story-line is not developed which makes the author waste the chapter on stupid competition which are without any meaning.

Frankly the only good thing in this series are all based Earth side and missing Alita - the flashback we get with the Vampire arc and the Ending arch with Figure Four and Dr.Ido
