Welcome to the Bloodline Vampires, a warrior brotherhood of dark, dangerous and deadly vampires who will stop at nothing to protect their fated mates.
This book was previously published as Vampire Mate by L. J. Red.
Girl is human. Boy is vampire. Boy meets girl. Boy and girl like each other, but not allowed! Boy and girl work together to solve crime. Boy and girl fall for each other…ooh forbidden love! Boy pushes girl away. Girl saves boy…bite me! (Actually). Girl is vampire now too. Oops, spoiler alert.
The book started off strong. Detective Dana was prowling around an abandoned warehouse, supposedly meeting an informant about the brutal serial killer nicknamed “Monster of Chicago”, as he was thought to be one of the newly revealed Vampires. Instead, she over heard a plot to ambush the leader of the vampire’s own police force, The Shadows”.
Feeling a sense of duty to warn her undead colleague, Dana ditches her partner and sneaks into the local vampire stronghold, Sanctuary.
Sounds good, right? It was, until the book became more about the Do’s and Don’t s of vampire society. There were token pieces of investigation, Dana reading paperwork, but mostly the most feared killer in Chicago went from “Priority Number 1” to whatever priority it was for Dana to watch two Shadows waterboard each other in the fountain.
Yes, I know this book was a romantic fantasy but with the author’s ability to write a fight scene, it could have been so much more.
I probably won’t be reading the rest, as amusing as it was for big, bad, vampires having House (Bloodline) colors. Ten points to House, erm, Bloodline Shadow, for finally getting cellphones.
Not a bad start to a series, Dana's character felt really generic to me, Lucien a little less so. I liked the plot, I liked the world building, I liked the introduction to different characters we'll obviously be seeing in future books. I wish the book had a little more "oomph" to it, something that made it stand out more, and I wish it had had a little more character development. I get that Dana and Lucien are soulmates and all which would make them a sudden couple, but even by those standards it felt like between one sentence and they next they went from fighting the pull to being madly in love. There was no easing in to it, just a flip of a switch.
I'm curious to see how the other books in the series go, as I said I liked the world building that happened in this one and the characters for future books sounded promising.
Mysterious and exciting! I didn't like how the point of view kept flipping to other characters. I know they are important but it seems like they don't really need to be there until later. Other than that it was great.
DNF @51% This just felt so generic and bland to me. There’s literally nothing interesting about these characters. Don’t even get me started on the instant love trope in this one. There’s nothing in here that makes me want to keep reading.
I'm giving this book 3.5⭐ only because I wish we saw more romance between the Lucien and Dana. it started off great but it was like automatically they was madly in love. So I just wished there was more of a build up to it. But it was good would def recommend!
