Irv Burnett met the 'veiled' Miss Vera Witmack, a former Palmist, when she was 29 and that was about 23 years ago.
He helped her to settle and to support herself (since Miss Witmack wasn't married) after her unfortunate encounter with a not so tame Leopard.
Six years after their first meeting one of her boarders, Andy Scholdt, gets visited by his nephew Marty and the evil takes its course.

"I — I don’t know. I don’t think I want to know. It was like she was burning matches, only worse. It smelled awful.”
When I was small my late father would tell us kids, what his supersticious mother used to say whenevr there was a weird smell at after dark or if something weird had happened which you couldn't explain, "Der Teufel (persönlich) war hier, es stinkt nach Schwefel!" (Translated = The devil (himself) was here, it smells/reeks of Sulphur), and I thought of this saying as soon as I read that passage.

That part on the other hand made me remember Stories which our mother had told us, Stories from her town ad the area nearby. Of women who knew what to do and when to do it… so your life would become hell. Women who were different, you know!?

Highly recommended, it's 12 pages (≈ 30 minutes). I read the story while listening to it. I love to do that sometimes and here it was worth every page and every second.
This delicious short story will get a full 5 🌟 Rating from me.
