"I — I don’t know. I don’t think I want to know. It was like she was burning matches, only worse. It smelled awful.”When I was small my late father would tell us kids, what his supersticious mother used to say whenevr there was a weird smell at after dark or if something weird had happened which you couldn't explain, "Der Teufel (persönlich) war hier, es stinkt nach Schwefel!" (Translated = The devil (himself) was here, it smells/reeks of Sulphur), and I thought of this saying as soon as I read that passage.
