Detective Inspector Jim Morfield is worried. In the quiet, countryside village of Fritton, human remains have begun appearing. Bodies so viciously mutilated that only their bones are left behind, in some cases less than a few hours after they were reported missing. What creature could possibly devour human remains so quickly? Surely, as with the case of farmer Stanley Walters, it couldn’t be his cows nearby and covered in blood that dismembered and devoured him? Then, when another person is attacked by a horse, his arm nearly torn off, he has no choice but to consider the impossible.
The problem is that there is another killer to contend with. One who has Fritton terrified. A serial killer hiding among the woods and fields, unseen, unchallenged. Now Jim has to decide if the bodies accumulating in the area are the works of a human or something as harmless as the local wildlife.

Twisted Terror!

Backstory:

The village of Fritton Woods has been turned into a graveyard as some residents of the village are found dead as "something" is killing them in a gory and gruesome manner!

Detective Inspector Jim Morfield along with his partner Detective Gareth Connolly are on the hunt for what they think might be a serial killer, but that is not the only problem they have to worry about as it seems the forest creatures and farm animals are also a force to be reckoned with as well!

Something has turned the harmless animals into crazy carnivores that are ready to eat anything in their path! Morfield and Connolly have their work cut out for them as they are not only tracking a serial killer but they have to figure out what is causing the animals to go crazy and why they are attacking people of the village!

Thoughts:

This was a new author to me and I was very impressed by how fast I was pulled into the story! The action takes off right away and kept me hooked throughout the book! I read the story within 24 hours as the book kept my insomnia fueled as I was up to the early hours of the morning reading it!

There were tons of blood, gore, and descriptive graphic scenes of the animal attacks which made me grab my gore suit as it was so needed for this book!

Fast pace, great storytelling, mystery, tension, graphic gore descriptions, and intense situations!

I know I won't look at harmless animals from farms/woods as just cute creatures after reading this book! This is the first book in a series so I will be looking forward to the other books in the series and any other books that this author has out there. Giving this book five "Crazed Creatures" stars!

Justin Boote has proven once again that mixing horror tropes can be done well.
In Carnivore we get herbivores turned carnivore, a serial killer and a mother gone mad. There's mystery and lots of gory kills.

Holy Shit Justin! This book was Awesome!

The prologue draws you in and hooks you straight away. It's gross and horrifying! And a nice little bit of back story for Officer Jim Morfield!

Then, we get to chapter one, which is utterly brutal, full throttle and blood soaked! And this, this is when I realise I will have to put all my chores on hold as I'm not getting up from my couch until I've read the entire book!! 🙃

And what a brilliantly gruesome ride that was! I 'was' an animal lover, but I'll be keeping a wary eye on all creatures, cute, cuddly and otherwise now, a bit like how my cat was looking at me the whole time I was reading! 😲😉

This book is terrifying, not only is the normally pleasant UK wildlife acting not so normally, we also have a pretty twisted serial killer on the loose, intent on keeping his part of the countryside exactly how he likes it, free from dirty humans!

This was an unputdownable read, the pace was perfect, the horror and blood letting just right, and the twists and turns were ace! I personally got a classic horror vibe from this, along the lines of Shaun Hutson and Guy N Smith! 🖤

I absolutely cannot wait for more from Officer Jim.....and his Mum!! 😁

Do you know the feeling of being polluted by the big city's smog, noices, crime, and demands? And you just need to get out of it for bit; back to the nature, the harmony, the silence...the primitive?
Have you ever wondered if nature want you to come back?
Justin Boote gives a suggestion of how mother nature and her children might react if they were able to show their true feelings about your effing need to come back and place your dirty polluted butt in her lawn.
A funny, gory and terrifying tale you're glad is just a tale...for now.

What happens when the hunted become the hunters?! Add some childhood trauma/turmoil by an insane murderous mother… and throw in a body chopping serial killer for extra flavor. Let me tell ya, I live surrounded by farms and woods directly behind my house. I will neverrrrrrrr look at squirrels, deer, cows, or horses the same again!!!! I’m an animal lover but this book really had me questioning “what if”. There’s sooooo much death going on in this book from all different angles that I want to just say F it and go live in a bomb shelter already. And I’ll be damned if I feed any more squirrels,
Lol. Between the grotesque descriptions of attacks, and the clever combination of sun genres, Justin is carving quite a path for himself. I’m going to lovingly refer to this sub genre mix as “the perfect clusterfuck”. *Chefs kiss*

So have you ever wondered what would happen if cute fluffy bunnies and slow sweet moo cows all of a sudden got a taste for flesh instead of grass and veggies?? Well...read this to find out. OH...annnddddd there’s a nasty serial killer thrown in to the mix. I said, “Ahhhh gross!” at least three times BEFORE the first chapter. Amazing. The best part of this book is that it’s the first of a trilogy! You also may see a few familiar mentions if you’ve read Serial, which I mean, if you haven’t read Serial yet...GET👏🏼 ON👏🏼 THAT👏🏼

This is another great and original read by Justin Boote! Read it. Looove it. Maybe don’t eat first. Or eat a big juicy burger while you’re reading it. We love all kinds here!

WHAT A READ!!
The book gives a new meaning to the word carnivore, that's for sure!
Though it's the first book in the series of the Ghosts of Northgate, it has little to do with the Northgate sanatorium for the criminally insane and more about the search for one.
Jim, a detective who's mother is in Northgate is searching for a killer in the wooded area near the village in England where he lives.
Things get weird when people are found looking like they were eaten by animals. The only thing that doesn't make sense to Jim and his current partner is that the animals doing the eating are not normally carnivores. Since when do cows, rabbits, sheep, deer and others decide that they need to eat those that eat them.
It's not a long book, only 156 pages, but if you like a book with a twist this one's for you.

Wow

This was amazingly written.

I am trying not to give too much away but at one part I felt physically sick. I dont think a book has ever had the effect on me before but this book definitely did. The author has unbelievable skill at creating vivid bloody and disturbing images. I am not going to be looking at a bunny rabbit the same again!

Off to buy the second book now!!

What springs to mind when you think of the rural English countryside? Peace? Tranquillity?

Certainly not a savage serial killer who mutilates and dismembers anyone unfortunate enough to wander into the woods alone and unprotected. And I’m sure that is the exact opinion of Detective Inspector Jim Morefield who gets called in to investigate the discovery of yet another maimed corpse. After all, someone is responsible for the bodies piling up. Just because the wife of the latest victim swears that her husband was eaten alive, and that the cows basking in the same field as the remains are covered in blood, doesn’t mean that there’s anything more sinister going on. Does it?

Carnivore by Justin Boote is a great novella. I chose to read it at the sacrifice of sleep, which in itself should tell you something. It’s moreish, fast-paced and has gore aplenty. I definitely recommend it… although it may permanently skew your perception of the countryside.

I received this book as an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book! I have not read anything like it before! The killer that is lurking in this book, is not your average killer. This book had me gasping, laughing, scared….all of it! I really liked that right from the first chapter things start getting intense! I really could not stop reading. I can’t wait to read the rest in this series!

This is the first book I’ve read by Justin Boote, and I am looking forward to reading his other novels.

If you weren't nervous around horses before...

This was my first Justin Boote book, and now I'm excited to read more! Carnivore is a unique story, chock full of shock and gore but not overly done. It's also freaking hilarious! If you like stories about animals gone wild, this one is for you. I love that Boote sets up the sequel with hints throughout the story, ending it in such a way that you'll HAVE to read the next book in this series. Carnivore is deliciously creepy, and fun to read.

In the serene countryside, near a peaceful creek perfect for fishing lurks a serial killer, but there is something more, something evil. Justin Boote takes us on a fast-paced, violent ride in this excellent tale of murder & mayhem. I'd give it 4 ½ ⭐ if I could.

*I'm not going to give you the 'what this book is about' blurb - you can read that elsewhere.

1. Welp, I live in an area where there are cows and horses and more squirrels than I've ever been comfortable with, but not it's *REALLY* uncomfortable. THANKS, JUSTIN :) LOL.
2. I love how there were 2 story lines going on that don't really...maybe...but do they? have anything to do with each other? *this is the first book in a trilogy, so read on to find out! But, both storylines were really intriguing. I've read a few books in the past that I've found one to be dreadfully boring or pointless, but that's not the case here!
3. The main plot, where Carnivore comes in, was something new for me. I've not read a lot of 'animals strike back' or really animal based horror because I'm an animal lover and I don't want to see it go the other way. Kill all the humans you want, but leave the animals alone, LOL. So I'm wary about reading horror involving animals, but this was, in my opinion, nothing like what I try to avoid.
4. As someone who loves hiking and running and the beauty of nature the fact that a serial killer is going around picking off people for littering/disrespecting nature is something I can relate to. No, I've never killed someone (and wouldn't!) but I can understand the anger behind the action.
5. I flew through this one and am now (at the time of writing this) about 50% through the 2nd book in the trilogy and it's really good too. Highly recommend!

I'm a sucker for creature horror and this one is no exception. I will say the deaths in this one are brutal. You might want to have a light lunch before reading this one. Sometimes it's thrilling when Mother Nature says, Enough! The best part about this story is that the killers are animals you would least suspect, hehe.

I'll admit if this were to happen in real life, I would be scared as heck. However, that's what makes this a great horror read. Justin keeps my love of creature horror alive and well with Carnivore. Read it today if you enjoy stories about animals getting even with mankind.

I tend to wait to start a series until the entire set is released (same with tv shows) but knowing Justin's fast-paced release schedule, I jumped right into Carnivore. My fears of a cliffhanger were unfounded as Justin did a good job of wrapping up the story and looking forward to see where he takes the series.

As with his previous book Serial, Justin interweaves two plots together to create unique stories for a fresh take on horror tropes. He doesn't spare the gory details from his victims and if you're a nature person, be warned, you might not feel so safe when you spot some "harmless" wildlife on your next hike.

This is book 5/32 for the horror indie book brawl.

This book is about about a series of killings caused by typically docile animals turning violent and attacking people. Our main character is a detective who's trying to figure out what's going on, while at the same time investigating a serial killer who also targets people around the same forest.

I didn't like this book. It didn't infuriate me enough to give it one star, but I was pretty excited for it to be over. I feel like I don't read a ton of indie authors because I feel bad giving them a low rating, but I'll unpack the specifics of what didn't work for me so that it's not a low rating for no reason. I will say that the cover is okay, although the animal skull choice is totally unrelated to the story.

The characters. There was a lot of them. Too many. Most characters were introduced only to be killed almost immediately. When characters feel like they exist to be disposable, it takes all emotional impact out of their deaths. I found myself glossing over a lot of the death scenes because they were incredibly repetitive because most deaths had very little impact on the story or the other characters. Our main character is Jim, a detective with a very troubled upbringing and dark backstory. Did his troubled upbringing and dark backstory affect the story? Nope. It introduced some needless shock value in the form of nightmares but those also have no impact on the overall story.
The other main character is the serial killer. He find out everything we need to know about him through a big exposition dump. Non of it is overly surprising or interesting.
Every other character is even more flat than these two. No one has a character arc.
There's a known serial killer in the area. So why are people still going for walks alone in the woods? No one makes any smart decisions in this book once an animal starts attacking them. It was also a missed opportunity that no one tried to escape by jumping in the river only to be attacked by fish or something - that would have been a little less repetitive.

The setting. There was no atmosphere. Being in a forest where any animal wants to kill you would be scary and confusing. Any little sound or shadow could be a threat. There was no time to let the tension build - just straight action and gore.

This story could have been a fun mystery. Based on the synopsis, it could have been about Jim, a detective with a tragic past who, while working on a case about a suspected serial killer, finds mutilated bodies that don't align with the other victims, and slowly realizes that something is going on with the animals in the area to make them violent. Then he must team up with a man from the environmental association to solve the mystery and return things to normalcy. You might be thinking - that is kind of what the books is about, but the major problem is that there's literally zero mystery.

Another weak link to this story was the reason why all this is happening.

The book ended and I thought to myself, for a short book with so much action, that was really boring and repetitive. On the brightside, there wasn't a bunch of needless animal deaths.

Never felt uncomfortable around animals...

...until now, that is.

Five stars. I recommend this horror novel.

I have never read anything by Justin Boote before, and I am glad that Carnivore was the first book that I read because I really enjoyed the creepy adventure.

This story will keep you on your toes until the very last page where you will wish there was more. I would read this again and I am currently looking to dig my hands into another one of Boote's books.

Absolutely thrilling. Easy to read and hard to put down once you have picked it up.
