Kaden has been a part of Blackstone pack his entire life, and been Beta for several years. While fated mates are part of his world, he never gave much thought to finding his own, or at least he didn't used to. Blackstone is his home and he loves his pack, but he's started struggling with fitting in with the increasing number of mated couples. The woman he's been seeing the last year and a half finds her mate and he is once again the lone wolf among a crowd of happy mated couples. Needing a break from being the permanent third wheel, Kaden goes off on a long run to get away and feels a strange, indescribable pull South. As he moves farther South into California, he finds his mate, but what should be a happy moment is shrouded in darkness as he ventures into her world- a world very different from his and very different from what he's used to. Her world is full of darkness and danger that he's never experienced before and while he tries to get close to her, he finds himself getting sucked into that danger more and more, and finds protecting her might even be harder than he realized when secrets come out that even she didn't know about.

Violet has been labeled a genius and prodigy ever since she was a child, and she hates every moment of it. After escaping from the limelight she never wanted, she lives in a world of secrets, paranoia and fear- fear of being found, of being trapped like she was years before. In a desperate attempt to keep herself safe, she keeps everyone else at a distance and tries to drown the grief and the pain of her past and present with self-medication until the day she can finally get the justice she's worked so hard for. Violet is at a breaking point when she meets Kaden. Her mind, heart and body are torn in a million directions as she struggles to focus on her dedication to her promise of justice more important to her than anything else, but repeatedly runs into him, making that pull stronger and confusing her further. A lifetime of defense mechanisms surface and keep her from letting him close, despite his many attempts. Promises she made years ago stay fresh in her mind and she does everything she can to keep them, even if it means crossing the boundary of legality to get there. Secrets she doesn't want to be revealed are laid out, friends turn to enemies and safe havens turn to traps until she has nowhere to turn except to the strange man who, against her better judgment, she feels a pull to. Her trauma-engrained mind won't let Kaden get close to her without precautions but as she looks into his life, she finds a lot of things that aren't adding up and make her question what secrets he's hiding.

The pull of a mate is strong, but will it be stronger than the protective barrier Violet has in place?

I’ve been here since I found Addie’s and Xanders story on Wattpad. Jaide can write, her updates keep me coming back. I would recommend reading the stories in order so you’re not lost, but you don’t have to. Kaden and violet’s story took on. A lot of tough topics. Because of that, I would recommend going in with an open mind, it can be triggering for some. But holy shit, this story was wild. It wasn’t sex based (there was spice) but she makes you want more. I can’t wait for Thaddeus’s story, that man intrigues me. 👀

I NEVER write reviews. Like never. I've read probably a thousand books and this is my first review and I rarely give 5 stars. I LOVE this book! Everything about this book sang to my soul. Jaide has a way with words when it comes to expressing/explaining emotions and longing. There is so much feeling in this book and the way Jaide writes and handles trauma is beautifully done (kind of a weird thing to say, but it's true). The two main characters are dynamic, emotive, and heartwarming. Throughout the book we get to see the characters grow into themselves from depression into people that accept themselves. Plus the romance is incredible. Lots of slow burn and the sex scenes are spicy! The plot is also action packed with plenty of WTF plot twist moments that begin to hint at the overarching plot of The Elder Series. This book has everything I could have wanted. Probably my favorite couple ever or at least a top contender.

The story takes a wild turn in this book. Kaden finally finds his other half, Violet, only to find her at rock bottom. He drops everything to be what she needs and as we slowly see her let him in, we learn their worlds are more connected than originally foreseen. Violet has a very dark past and needs Kaden's light to finish a war and fight the internal battle of loving herself. A beautiful and heart-wrenching story that has you cheering for these two souls to work through their problems together.

ALSO! Kane from "Marked" is back and better than ever! He makes friends with Violet and it was the content I didn't know I was missing. Their duo club is the BEST!

While Xander and Addie remains at the top, Kaden and Violet come in close. No matter how long and heavy it was, I found myself coming back to this one a few times.

It has a solid backstory for both of them. The introduction and hints to another type of supernatural was also done thoughtfully. I love how Violet plays an important role for the rebellion and how Jaide managed to capture the shift in role while portraying the hardship and struggles that Violet has to overcome before slipping in to her rightful place.

I had lots to say about this one when I was reading it. But it’s been awhile so I'll stop at this.
