Many years ago, people suffered. A rampant virus mutated genes in less than one percent of the population, leaving them with abnormalities. The unaffected shunned them. They shamed the people they didn’t know their lives would rely upon.
CHANDLER wants to run away. She craves freedom from her past and her mother. So when an opportunity arises that might take her away, she flees.
ZIVA wants something to be hers. Her whole life she’s had to share everything with her siblings. So when someone hands her an application that could mean standing out, she signs.
QUINTON wants adventure. He finally got it when he took a chance and now he’s made a whole new position for himself. So when things go to change again, he’s intrigued.
When Chandler and Ziva arrive for their first day at their new jobs, it’s not what they expect. And soon, it gets both better and worse.
They’re sent out on a mission, along with Quinton, to retrieve a lost artefact that could change the face of any wearer. But if they don’t recover it within the parameters set, and someone else finds it first, the fate of the world could be in danger.

Perfect for fans of Ally Carter's Heist Society, Kirsten Krueger's Affinities Novels, and James Bond but for a more rounded audience.
Chandler, Ziva and Quinton, are sent out on a mission to retrieve a lost artifact that could change the face of any wearer. But if they don’t recover it within the parameters set, and someone else finds it first, the fate of the world could be in danger.
First of all, I fell in love with the characters. They were all so different, but I loved their relationships and personalities.
When I first read the blurb, I really liked the dystopian feel to the story, and it came through quite well. The Abnormalities were such a good aspect of the story, and such an interesting thing to explore the further you read along.
The characters going on a mission, in my opinion was not the main aspect of the story. What I really liked about it was them becoming like a family, by going through the motions of completing the mission. It's a strong story of friendship and love, and I can't wait to see what happens in the next installment!
A very fun surprise was to find my name in the acknowledgements! I didn't expect that to happen and would like to thank Lauren for including me in them, and sharing the ARC with me. It means a lot!
Bearer of Masks is a character driven story that still has a fast-paced plot with action and suspense. Set almost 400 years in the future, it follows Chandler, Ziva, and Quinton, three Abnormals with different superpowers. They come together when the girls are introduced to a secret organization of Abnormal spies and tasked with retrieving a special lost mask. Despite their different backgrounds, the three work together like they've been friends forever. I love their interactions, Chandler's chill sarcasm, Ziva's quiet wit, and Quinton's charming humor. The world has changed since our time, yet it feels like a subtle dystopia, with hints of the nefariousness lurking beneath the surface. Though the story wrapped up nicely, there are still some open ended aspects, and the little cliffhanger at the end made me so anxious to learn more about the world and the characters in the next book.
Set in the year of 2406, BEARER OF MASKS weaves an intricate tale of fantastical excitement. I fell in love with Chandler and company from the first pages. This exhilarating read kept me up hours past my bedtime, but the tea drenched lethargic mornings were well worth it. In fact, I used this book to escape family obligations during Thanksgiving dinner and I am not ashamed to admit it. That goes to prove just how immersive this novel is. My house was filled to overflowing with guests, but I drowned them out while reading and sitting right in the middle of their political arguments. (Thank goodness for Kindle! 😉)
*I received an e-arc for review from the author. All thoughts are my own*
This was my second book by Lauren Jade Case and it won’t be my last! She has quickly become one of my favorite indie authors. I really enjoyed Bearer of Masks and I can’t wait to read the sequel. If you enjoy fantasy and sci-fi with a dash of mystery, I think you’d really enjoy this book.
This book takes place in the year 2406. Many years ago, a rampant virus mutated the genes of people in less than one percent of the population, leaving them with abnormalities. Those unaffected shunned them, not knowing that they would come to rely upon them.
Chandler has always wanted to escape. She craves her freedom and wants to get away from her mother with whom she doesn’t have a good relationship. When a new employment opportunity arises, she decides to go for it.
Ziva wants something that’s hers and hers alone. Her whole life she’s had to share everything with her eight siblings. When someone gives her the opportunity to stand out, she signs on.
Quinton longs for adventure. He finally got it when he took a chance and made a whole new life for himself. When another opportunity for change presents itself, he’s intrigued.
When Chandler and Ziva arrive for their first day at their new jobs, it’s not what they were expecting. Soon, it gets both better and worse.
The girls are sent out on a mission with Quinton to retrieve a lost artifact that could change the face of anyone that wears it. But there’s a catch, if they don’t recover the artifact within the parameters set, the fate of the whole world could be in danger.
I quickly fell for this amazing cast of characters! They’re thrown together for a job and come to forge an amazing friendship. The friendship between them is what I loved most about the story. I also thought that the abnormalities were an interesting aspect and I loved learning more about them as the story progressed. Everything wrapped up fairly nicely at the end, but there were some things that were left open ended, and I can’t wait to read more.
This book is available now, so I hope you’ll check it out. I definitely recommend!
I was pleasantly surprised to see myself mentioned in the acknowledgments. It actually brought tears to my eyes and I’m so thankful.
I have to start this reviw saying this: Lauren rocks! She is absolutely fabulous! She creates wonderful characters and make us fall in love with them with every single word! Characters so easy to relate as they deal with feelings and insecurities. Characters that steal our hearts and makes us suffer and be happy with them, cheer and cry and get desperate for them! I wish I could read and feel it all over again like it was the first time!
We jump right into the world of spies! Not any kind of spies. They all have abnormalities, a kind of superpower, differental and unique for everyone. They suffer with a lot prejudice, but this agency is responsible for hire only abnormals, so they all feel like they have a family, safe and welcomed.
Right at the beginning we met Chandler and Ziva. Sweet girs that connects with each other righ from the beginning. We see them go through their insecurities as they fought past all the challenges the mission presents. The girls get paired with this cutie that is Quinton, a so so so sweet boy, that wants to make sure the girls got all comfortable and alright! Did I tell already that he is a cutie? I did? Oh sorry, but he just is! 🤷🏼♀️ It's a crazy ride to find a long lost mask so, with the clock ticking, they find themselves coming up with crazy plans and long nights filled with tea to retrive it in time (thanks Lauren for making me want to try Pink Rose Tea! 🙊)! It's so cool to see their friendship (and maybe a bit of something more) develop as they become a very tight unit for a mission and extend it for their lives!
It's a story about friendship above everything else, about chances and the choices made facing them and also about endings that may be a lot better than we expected!
X-Men meets James Bond in this YA science-fantasy novel, and I'm 100% here for it. Seriously, I had so much fun reading this book. Lauren Jade Case brings a relatable cast of characters to life, then ushers them together so they can forge friendships that will last a lifetime.
Rather than relying heavily on flashy fight scenes - as many adventure stories do - Case utilizes character-driven conflict throughout most of the narrative to keep things interesting. However, don't worry, action lovers - there's still plenty of fights to be found near the end of the book.
I highly recommending picking this up if you haven't already!
This was such an exciting dystopian read! I love heists, and the added bonus of people having special powers just made it all the more exciting.
In Lauren's world, people with powers (such as freezing water, changing colours, seeing the future) are seen as abnormals and are shuned by general society. Chandler and Ziva, both abnormals join an organisation for abnormals where they are tested by being sent on a mission, along with an experienced member Quinton.
This totally gave me Xmen vibes, and was just as exciting and fast paced, as I had hoped for! There was just the right amount of developing romance, without it taking center stage from the heist plot, and the characters were well developed with fun, unique personalities.
I did get lost at times, but I'm no James Bond, and I always get lost in heist novels... honestly for me, that's half the fun, and it was a very fun read!
I would describe this as a mix between Six of Crows and Maximum Ride with a dash of Divergent in there. Kids with powers on a mission to find a special mask whilst building a found family vibe? It had all the makings of a book I would enjoy! I did feel the focus was more on the characters and that the plot came second but I don’t really mind that!! It was a good read with a diverse set of characters!
