Kira

In the blink of an eye, my whole world has collapsed around me. Headed towards my dream vacation I was snatched right out of the air. My husband, the love of my life, was destroyed right in front of my eyes. He fought bravely trying to protect me from a horror neither one of us could have ever imagined. I find myself standing in the spotlight on a stage. Mutilated and tortured, the blood from my body flowing freely down my legs along with my will to live. Piercing yellow eyes emerge from the darkness, but even the shadows can’t hide his imposing form. Gentle, but terrifying arms reach out for me, and within their embrace can I find the will to live again?

DaR

I am a badass, known throughout the galaxy for my brutality, as a ruthless and feared commander. With that being said, somehow I still got coerced into purchasing a slave. My eyes fall upon a small female who's very essence and eternal light is leaking out of her onto the floor below her. I watch in awe as she accepts her fate, willing her nightmare to be over. I almost turn away from her and the unnecessary cruelly in this room, but the very thought of her dying on that floor surrounded by the very monsters that have done this to her disgust me. I walk up among the beings surrounding her and pull her from the stage, daring, or should I say hoping they try to do something about it. The moment I put her in my arms, everything changes. The attachments I have avoided my whole life become unavoidable. Will this damaged slave be able to replace the shadows in my life? One thing for sure is that I will destroy the entire universe to keep her safe. No one touches what’s MINE!

Original Story and a high tech alien world!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: ❤️💙💜💚💖
Steam: 🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌎🌍
Character development: 😠☺️😋
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Kira - she is a human who married the love of her life and has grown children. Her and her husband Rick get on an airplane on the way to go on a cruise and while flying over the Bermuda triangle, the plane comes to a dead stop after a shadow appears over them. The top of the plane is ripped open and alien creatures come aboard capturing all the women on board and killing her husband in the process.

The Hero: DaR - He is a brutal warrior and commander and has attained the highest status in his galaxy, as the head of the House of DaR. He has 22 sons by different mothers, each of them having mixed heritage and different abilities. They are all different colors and sizes. He has an AI named Sage in his house who is part of his family. She tells him to attend a slave auction to see if he can purchase then free one of the slaves to have them help out in his home for pay.

The Story: The aliens that captured Kira and the women from the plane torture them, kill some of them and auction off the ones that are still alive. While Kira is on the block, a huge alien comes into the room and makes the monsters that took her cower. He has a huge axe fastened to his back. The will to fight has left Kira when her turn comes up. She hums to herself to distract her from what is happening. DaR is impressed by her and buys her.

DaR is very worried about Kira’s mind and the poor state of her body after he leaves with Kira. She nearly dies from blood loss, has broken ribs, a punctured lung and her entire back is shredded. He sits by her side as she is put into a healing chamber, and he is surprised by his interest in her. He shuts down that slave market afterwards and is determined to find out more about Kira’s species and her planet.

I love that this series has an advanced race with cool gadgets and things. I am getting sick of alien romance where humans end up on a barbarian planet where they live in a civilization like the dark ages. This was fun, the AI in the house could create new rooms like a hospital room or things like a table or a kitchen island with just a command. DaR has sym-bots on his person that come out at different times and can be dangerous in a fight or help out at other times.

This book is told in multiple points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Emily Sutton-Smith and Tor Thom. I love Tor Thom, especially for alien and paranormal romance, he has a super deep voice that is perfect for these large aliens. I already listened to book 4 of this series and it was my first with Emily Sutton-Smith as narrator, at first I thought her voice was a bit low, but now that I am used to her voice, I find that I am enjoying it more. She has a good cadence and flow as well as a very pleasant voice. Though I didn’t like the accent she had in this book.

Ok

I thought this book was ok. My main issue is that this book seems to get the characters halfway together and then has an epilogue with them actually together. Felt like the author didn’t write a good chunk of the story. It also has a bit of religion thrown in. Additionally there were grammar, spelling and other editing errors. Not the worst I’ve seen, but when some seem to be deliberate as translation and others are not it’s hard to tell the difference. In other places the alien says expressions only a human would know - further confusing the issue.

Spoiler Alert — Other problems
1) Where the heck did the heroine come up with the Vampire names? It doesn’t make sense. There are thousands if not millions of Vampire stories and I believe some of the myths are thousands of years old - exactly how long has his dad been on earth?
2) Why would it take 80-100 years for the humans to get there from earth, but only 5 for a round trip at the end?
3) She magically know what his sim bots are without him explaining, so I don’t know what they are. Organic? Nanobots? They’re kind of central to the story and not explained at all. Bot implies programable. Things that can be programmed aren’t supposed to act outside of their programs - like the house.
4) How the heck can it be a HEA if she’s in a world where she still can’t leave the house without fear of being attacked? What the heck is she going to do with her life?
5) ANDI - I assume that is some ai on the ship of his fathers, but since it also is never explained it’s hard to tell.
6) If you bring something up in your story, you should explain it. The expanse in the house markings???

What an emotional roller coaster!!

This was heart wrenching, agonizing yet sweet and tender. I read this in one sitting. I didn't sleep, I just kept reading. I also kept crying!!! This book grabbed me by the heart and twisted just a little bit.

I've never read anything like this before. Usually when aliens abduct women who are already married the husbands are usually a$$holes, or woman are fleeing bad husbands and family and try to hide in the stars. I've never read one that deals with a middle aged woman who had a wonderful husband and full life when she gets ripped away from it all. How she had to deal with grieving and guilt as she had to navigate a whole new alien existence.

I'm a little emotionally wrung out, but I just loved Kira and DaR. Fate pulled them together across the stars, so they could heal and bring peace to each other in this second stage of their lives.

I didn't even mind that this was almost completely clean....well not too much lol!

Dear god!
If I could I would rate this book lower, as petty and hateful as that sounds.
I love sci-fi, alien abduction romance books. And I mean I LOVE them. And after reading the blurb and the first chapter of this one I was hopeful, and trusted it will be a good one.
.
My first off moment was when I read the male main characters first POV. He literally used the word frack as a curse word. I mean... That's not necessary bad and I could live with it, but it lacks in imaginazion a bit.
And then there's the torture of abducted women that makes totally no sense. Like why would kidnappers torture and damage their own mechandise for no apparent reason? No audience, no recordings (if we're going a bit darker), no real reason given.
Well ok.
And from then on I read to find something redeemable. Maybe that part was just to excuse the leads wounds? And beside that the romance is everything, right?
And then they meet. It's not so bad. Compared to everything is actually quite good. Hopes rise again.
.....
And then is his POV and he just has to open his mouth.
I am not American, my first language isn't even english. That's why, when there was dialogue. His. Alien. Never been to Earth. Male. I was shocked and totally thrown when what came out was what sounded like the most stereotypical old texas rancher vibe I ever got. Thought it was a fluke tbh.
And it got worse. Not only him but other too. All the 'you hear that, SON' . It dropped my vibe like it touched a live vire in a power plant. Nothing was left but horror.
.
And I'm really sorry because I wanted to read and like this book! It just makes me want to cry 😭.
Mannerisms and speech are an important part of ouf perception and this book just hit it in a completely wrong direction.
.
And that is all if we dicount the large plot holes, typos, and other elements that don't make sense or interrupt the reading.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This was a mixed bag, it's an abduction sci-romance and though the writing was fine there also seemed to be something missing as I struggled to connect. The FMC Kira is an older lady, I think 46 this was a definite novelty as i do find older heroines are so under-represented in romance novels. My only slight grumble though was why did they have to make her lose ten years after healing it's basically saying us older ladies with our wrinkles and such are past it and need to regress in ageing signs to be considered attractive, it's only a small thing but it irked me none the less.

So the initial start of this had a fair bit of darkness. When Kira is abducted she doesn't have an easy time of it. Here lies some of my problem, I knew what was happening was horrific but it didn't touch or affect me in any way. I processed the information and was aware it was awful and traumatic for Kira but it failed to emotionally impact me. It all seemed to be imparted in such a way that felt like a report rather than me first-hand experiencing it and this caused a disconnect so I felt like an observer rather than a participant.

Then after that, the rest of this was quite sweet the romance itself was a slow-burn gradual thing and there was a lack of any intimate scenes bar the epilogue which slightly touched on it. This was actually for the most part a clean romance. Also, it seemed to be in a rush to include everything that you're going to need for other character's stories, so I felt like we were checking boxes to get it all set up rather than building the relationship and concentrating on Kira and Dar.

There were small things that felt off that also caused me to emotionally detach. One such thing was Kira's emotional state on the one hand she's quite rightly grieving for her husband but then she hardly gives a thought bar in passing to her grown-up children, or any extended family. All these small things added up to create an incomplete representation of Kira that for me had a knock-on effect. Dar is also somewhat of a closed book we know his family situation and history but not much else. He wasn't even described in any depth or even how his unique abilities worked.

Despite the above, this wasn't all negatives I did like how the bond built gradually between these two I just also felt that this seemed somewhat stripped back and a tad under-developed. It just needed something more and I don't believe I will be continuing with this series as I just don't think it's for me.

I was in the mood to not tax my brain, read a little light sci-fi romance and just escape for a bit. This story looked like the perfect solution. And it was… kinda. It didn’t tax my brain at all, but it did frequently annoy it. There were SO many things that jumped off the page because they just didn’t make sense! Like the top of a passenger jet being ripped off in mid-flight, yet everyone was just fine - no cabin pressure issues, no one being sucked out the humongous gaping hole? They just sit there wondering why the clouds are flying by? And, its a sci-fi story where aliens who have never heard of earth speak Engligh, complete with our slang, colloquialisms and cliche’s? The list could go on and on and on.

SOPE… suffice it to say, it it fulfilled one expectation but failed at the other.

Potential triggers: gorey death, brutal torture, kidnapping, and ptsd scenarios inside.

The blurb says 'some dark themes'--but um, that's more than 'some.' It's all pretty quick in these books, all devices used to 'set the stage' of the novels. BUT, it's pretty aggressively placed, so be forewarned.

Now. Let's talk about the inserted art.
It's pretty not great. I mean--there's even someone's selfie thrown in there. Very unnecessary artwork, I recommend both these books have their inspiration board content removed, as it's super distracting. Readers are real good with using their own imaginations, and unless the artwork adds (instead of detracts) from a story, it's not really helpful to the consistency of the story. It felt very amateur and not well integrated/placed.

The story is good. Some typos, but overall it features a really great plot concept, character creation and authorship execution. I really enjoyed the first two installments of this series--I will probably read the third and fourth guys when they come up. There are some labelling and art things I would obviously (as mentioned) want addressed with the next couple releases. But while they bug me A TON, I'll probably still return to the world and just shake my head at how silly the mistakes are.

DaR and Kira

What a fantastic read! Although the start was quite gruesome, I think it was well written to set the scene. Loved the interaction with the AI and Kiras reaction when DaRs sons appeared on scene. Can't wait to start reading the next in the series, but need to replenish my tissues first, just in case they're needed again.

Borderline unreadable.

The spelling, punctuation, and run-on sentences made this way too frustrating to finish. I was stopping to report content errors twice a page or more, too much to enjoy reading. When an illustration of the heroine came up I threw in the towel. Instead of the woman in her 40s who had just lived through hell, a super sexy woman in her 20s was displayed. Normally I'd ignore that, but it was the straw that broke the camel's back.

To the publisher: Please get a decent copy editor.

I like Sci-fi tales because anything goes, and it's not weird. The world that Jennifer has created is full of modern technology, along with AIs that are more than they seem. What a great and original read!

DaR is the first book in the Daverius, House of DAR series, and it is DaR and Kira's story, and boy does it start with a bang, or should I say a bloody massacre! It is heartbreaking, sad, gruesome, loving, and heart-warming, with some fun moments. Yes, there were some tears.

The story is told in multiple POV, which makes the story more immersive. There is action, slaughter, a variety of aliens; some are truly evil, and others are just big teddy bears.

Yes, there are some editing issues, but they don't detract from the story, not enough to be a pain in the arse.

Awesome!

This was a great story with excellent world building to go with it. DaR is instantly drawn to Kira when he finds her at an illegal alien auction. Lots of excitement with drama but very, very little sexiness to it. For shame really!

Kira, the human female lead, and her husband are starting a holiday when their plane is intercepted and the women taken captive by aliens whilst the men are tortured and killed. Dar, the male alien lead, has allowed his house AI to convince him it needs another being to be its physical hands. He grumpily attends a slave auction and is drawn to Kira, taking her. Finding her on the verge of death, he organises for her to be healed. They’re both damaged, especially Kira, but they feel drawn to each other’s presence…

This story is dual POV, well written (though not well edited, unfortunately), and a deeply emotional opening to a sci fi romance series. This is the first story I’ve read from this author and I found the world building interesting and engaging. I appreciated the premise of Dar’s people and his children. I LOVED that both lead characters were mature - Kira is middle age with adult children, Dar is significantly older also with adult children. I empathised with Kira’s trauma and the processing time that she genuinely needed. I enjoyed Dar’s patience and compassion. I enjoyed the way their bond was revealed to them.

I needed something to take my mind off another more intense read and this one hit the spot.

You know it's good when there's practically no smut and I still liked it!

Kira is taken by aliens after watching her husband die in front of her. She is physically abused and sold at auction.

DaR is commander of his own fleet and basically alien royalty. Tired of being pestered by SAGE (AI in charge of his home) to get a housemate, he agrees to buy one.

I enjoyed this grumpy alien commander trying to protect and care for a damaged human. Like I said, no spice in here but she's dealing with trauma and grief so I still enjoyed.

Was this perfect sci-fi romance? Nope. It had things that didn't make sense and things that should have been better explained but I don't even care.

I'll definitely check out the rest, cause I want to see DaR's sons getting their mates.

I got whiplash reading this

First this starts very harrowing, dark, and you expect it to be a non stop ride. And then the ride stops. Stalls and never goes back. This book did a full 180° turn and went from really dark to cinnamon roll.

There wasn’t any sexy times. No description of the goods. He is a grey giant human by all accounts. His sons are the aliens.

I would say this is a 3 star. It took me a bit to decide if it was 3.5 or 3. But the 180 feels like almost 2 writers were in on this.

I am glad she has the skill set for dark writing it is very good writing. I just expected more but once our FMC is rescued all real writing that showcases the authors skill set is out the window and the rest just neatly comes together as a teacup ride vs the wild rollercoaster we started with.

Ok I was expecting the typical alien romance with more spice than plot but this was the opposite and I couldn't be happier.
( Only one small spicy scenes at the very end and not very detailed. )

This was a great story full of trauma and courage. She had to adjust to her new life after losing her husband and being brutalized from the aliens that took her and sold her. I'm glad that the process wasn't quick. To me seemed realistic in the recovery.

Dar is a big bad softy. He is so comforting and kind and patient. He loves her almost immediately but never pushed her to give him anything.

Loved her meeting his sons and the reactions they had to each other. Also loved the ending. Looking forward to reading the others and watching the plot unfold more.

I'm finding that I am branching out to attempt novel choices via the audible plus catalog. Come to find this Scif was as rewarding as it was emotional and entertaining. It held me in its grip at page one and in tears by first chapter's end. I was quickly invested in the characters ,and thus I can vouch that the angst was real.!!
Although I am not going into great detail here,I can suggest that there are several good comprehensive reviews on the audible site.

I remained similarly invested In the second portion of the tale ,her rescue ,new life, new love....
I look forward to more from this series and this author!

I’m not really sure how to review this book. It was kind of cute and inventive, but that was kind of it?!
I mean 90% of this book takes place in one house. And there isn’t any romance or not even a kiss till the epilogue. And even then it’s only brief and minimal.
This book was basically more about loss and grief, and trying to move on from that. I thought it more sad than anything else. There were some beautiful parts, but mostly it was just very simple and kind of bland. I’m still kind of confused about how I feel about the book to be honest.

Amazing story of resilience and strength!

I brought it today and I finished it today.
You ever read a story where what's happening to the main character is so horrifying, so tragic, that you had to stop reading and put your hands over your chest because you just couldn't read another word? Then you started right back reading again because you couldn't stop?
Yes, that's this story!
I cannot even begin to think I would have been as strong as this woman. Even when she did reach that breaking point,,,she was WELL within her rights to have a moment.
He had to learn but when he did let his feelings show, he was so kind and loving. I love how she stood up to him, and how he waited and never pushed.
Great start to a new series!!!

Too short, but very refreshing!!
It hasn’t been proof read and the writing errors sometimes interrupted the reading flow.
That’s why I haven’t given it a fourth star although it would have deserved it.

Ok I finished this. It did not get better. 1 ⭐️. It got worse. The dialogue is just so awkward and bad. The author switches point of view in the same scene sometimes and it’s so confusing. I feel like essential elements of the couple’s story were skipped over between the initial ending and the epilogue. I didn’t feel the connection between the characters. She literally never thought of her kids again. They were mentioned like twice in the entire book. Such BS. And the writing was just not good. And Kira was so boring and annoying. GAH and the pictures. Don’t get me started on the weird pictures.

Editor, where were you?? Was this self published?? Don’t recommend.

—————————-

2 ⭐️. Currently 53% through this. We have this 40-something widow and mother who gets abducted by aliens and sold as a slave. The beginning is dark—more than other books like this that I’ve read. I was really interested to read a book with an older female who was also a mother. However, when she finally wakes up she BARELY thinks of her kids at all. Then when she is safe, she also barely thinks of them. As a mom, I know this is just so unrealistic that I don’t know if I can finish this. Yes, obviously I would mourn my husband, but I would also be completely devastated to never see my kids again. I am not getting that devastation from her and it is really irritating. No matter how old my kids were, if I knew I would never see them again I would go into an extreme depression. I just am not getting that from her whatsoever.

ALSO, the dialogue is so awkward. The author overuses exclamation points to the extreme and she tries to write the female as having a southern accent with southern phrases and it just sounds weird. I’m from southern Appalachia. I have nothing against southern talk, but it does not transfer well to writing and just detracts from the story. There are other issues, but those are my main ones. I’ll probably finish it. Hopefully it gets better. Hopefully she has just been in shock and goes through an actual mourning period for her kids. Maybe as the series progresses the writing gets better? Does anyone know? Ugh.

Rating: ❤️❤️❤️❤️.5
Heat Rating: 🔥🔥🔥
Narrator Performance: Female: 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧 Male: 🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧

Having never read Jennifer Julie Miller before I had no clue what to expect from this book. I was looking for shorter listens and when I saw that this was under 6 hours and in the + catalogue I couldn’t help but grab it. Boy am I thrilled that I did. I absolutely loved this book. The world building was superb and the action packed beginning drew me in with a quickness. The storyline was rather compelling and the romance was realistic. It wasn’t a slow burn romance. There was no burn at all. Instead, because DaR was a perfect gentleman, we got a romance that was heartfelt, genuine and respectful of Kira’s loss.

There were a few minor things that I found missing in the book. Firstly, Kira’s grief had holes in it. As she learns to live in her new surroundings she only seems to morn certain things. Secondly, this series is obviously going to follow DaR and his sons. What I’m not getting is why all of his children are boys. There was no reason given for that. The third thing that I found odd was a proclamation made by one of DaR’s sons. It was obviously put in the story to lay the groundwork for a future book however I found it suspect that nobody reacted or questioned him about what he said.

Both narrators blew me away with their performances. Tor Thom’s voice seemed especially deep as he portrayed DaR’s steely control and dedication. Emily Sutton-Smith delivered Kira’s southern accented words with easily felt emotion. I look forward to hearing more from them both.

* Jennifer Julie Miller must be a Battlestar fan

Beautifully designed

This is a beautifully designed ebook with gorgeous pictures! It is a slow burn love story, with only one sex scene, but the story of family, loss, and grief is so well-written that the lack of sex, even though it is an alien abduction story, is hardly noticed. I really enjoyed it and will read the next in the series.
