Whenever You Call

Rate this book
In all my time as a Los Angeles paramedic, I’d never taken a loss personally.

Not until America’s most beloved rockstar died in my hands.

Plagued with guilt, I stupidly watched over his wife from afar, only for some messed up form of karma to throw me into her life without me ever being able to turn back, because Hannah Moore was far too good for the likes of Hollywood, and it turned out she needed saving, too.

Allowing us to grow closer through a trauma she didn’t know we shared was a dangerous game to play, but when she looked up into my eyes, begging me to stay, I forgot all the reasons why I should go.

I forgot everything else existed but her.

Especially that, in Hollywood, the truth always came out in the end, and when mine did, I’d no longer be the hero she needed, but the nightmare she wished she’d never fallen into.

Whenever You Call was a fabulous slow burn romance. Single mother trope who finds love again after losing her rockstar husband.
This story delved into so many things that I’m certain many readers in one way or another can relate to. The journey Hannah goes through in particular. She’s dealing with grief and a different future now that she’s a single parent to her daughter Bella.

Logan the paramedic shares a connection with Hannah being he was the one on call that fateful night Hannah’s husband dies. Also his life is affected from his death and when Hannah accidentally bumps into Logan’s car their lives will be forever intertwined. Logan and Hannah form a bond and she finds comfort and a safe place in Logan. Bella wins over Logan immediately. But their journey towards a relationship isn’t easy.

I really appreciated the attention the author gave Hannah and focusing on mental health cause what she was going through and being a public figure can easily take its toll. It’s not something that’s easily solved and Logan was a fantastic support.
It took me a while to feel any chemistry between the two of them but once they started to have deeper conversations and get to know another it changed.

It’s a story that’s heavy on emotions and I expected it to be given the topics and the author delivered a beautiful story of second chances. In life and love.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have been sitting on this review for two weeks because I honestly don't know what to say to do this book justice. It has heart and soul. It's earth-moving and world-shattering and has given me the worst book hangover you can imagine.

Yet I say all of this in the absolute highest regard.

Vicki James has this amazing talent, even more so when it comes to romangst. She will weave the words and pull you in, and you willingly go, knowing that there will be tears, there will be emotional upheaval, and yet, you take it all because it's just. so. worth. it.

I could wax lyrical all day long, but I'm not one to give anything away about the books I read, just my emotions while reading them. The best advice I can give you is to go and read it and savor that first time because it will stay with you!

Wauw... I just don't have the words...
This woman just knows how she needs to put emotion in a book.
This is an angsty emotional ride from the moment you get on that train.
I don't want to spoil to much, but this story shows the downside of being a wife of a popstar, the Hollywood lifestyle and everything in between. But it also shows how beautiful people can be for one another. She just pun the words to perfection and you need to read this.

Vicki James broke my heart over and over again and I am living for it. Whenever You call is emotional overload at the best. Logan and Hannah's journey was epic. The gut punching, soul wrecking and all consuming feels took me down and this is me screaming at you to read this book.

Logan has always carried the guilt of not being able to save his best friend who died from drug overdose. As a paramedic, he tries his best. But then..America's sweetheart and beloved Rockstar Cole Newmann dies on his watch. Consumed by dark emotions, he starts to drive around Cole's house and that's how his path crosses with Hanna Moore Newmann and their adorable kid Bella. Cole wasn't exactly the best husband and Hannah is drowning in a lot of intense emotions. He offers to respond and listen to her whenever she calls. But how will Hannah react when she finds out the truth?

First of all, the writing is incredible. So emotional. The words will hit you hard and you won't be able to breathe sometimes. Second, the plot is amazing. Just imagine..a wife who lost her husband to addiction years ago but now have to grieve his actual death finds love again with the man who could have saved that husband. Oh my god. I cannot deal with this level of angst. Logan is the book boyfriend dream personified. He is so kind and warm. His confidence and compassion is like a cozy blanket in coldest days. I could feel the power of his calm and intense love in every page. He is a protector and his only interest is to protect Hannah and Bella from further pain. He has so much guilt and pain and Dilemma but he went about and beyond. I feel for Hannah so much. Her celebrity husband took away her light. She lost hope and her soul was wrecked. The world is after her privacy too. But she is so strong and she is an inspiring character. For her girl, she was ready to do anything at any cost. Logan gave her the space to be herself. To show her broken vulnerable side. It was a sweet and awkward Friendship at first but two broken souls recognize each other and slowly they fell in love. My heart is so full. I wish I could read this book for the first time all over again. Whenever You Call by Vicki James is the kind of story that stays in your heart forever.

Emotional Love story born of tragedy with perfect HEA!!

When I was talked into reading this story I knew it was going to be a total feelings ride.

But… Wow! I wasn’t really prepared for how hard I’d get hit in the feels. VJ really packed an emotional punch with WYC. I absolutely fell in love with Logan, Hannah and little Bella.

Grief is so tricky and I loved how VJ handled the multifaceted way in which people grieve and move on. How sometimes it’s not so cut and dried when we lose someone.

While this is a super slow burn, it was great for the story. The sexual tension was as high and palpable. When they finally explored their physical relationship it was steamy, sexy, and sweet.

If you’re looking for a good cry, this one's for you. It really gets you with an emotional punch to the chest. My eyes hurt after all the tears, but it felt so good to feel and connect with Logan and Hannah.

Logan is amazing. Talk about a savior in so many ways. Trying to save anyone and everyone around him. Taking blame when he can’t. The way he treats Hannah and Bella, melt my heart. He went from never loving anyone to loving with his whole being.
That ending!! I cried so much.

FAVORITE QUOTES
“You have no right to believe me when I say this, but you can trust me,” he said, as though reading my thoughts. “It’s my job to take care of people. I’d never do anything to purposely hurt anyone.”

“You don’t even know me. Why are you doing this?” “Because I know what it’s like to feel lost.”

“How do I know that I can trust you?” “You can’t know. Not yet. You just have to take a few risks first.” “Is that what you are, Logan? A risk?”

F*ck, she’s beautiful, and I’m so in love with her, it f*cking hurts to want her so badly.

She’d opened a gate. Unleashed a f*cking beast. One who’d never known what it felt to care for a woman while being inside her, and one who couldn’t get enough of the way that finally made him come alive after feeling as though something had been missing for far too long.

“As long as you and Bella want me in your lives—both of you—I’ll be there.” “Whenever we call?” She smiled softly. I pushed my fingers into the back of her hair, sliding her closer again until our noses rubbed together and our breaths mingled. “Every time.”

“There’s no bubble around us, Hannah. I wouldn’t allow us to live in something so fragile.” “Say more things like that.”

That was the kind of man Logan Thomas was. If he could save someone in any way—their lives, their energy, their time—he’d do it. He didn’t see himself clearly at all. Maybe none of us did.

Her and I… We were eternal. Nothing could take her from me now. Not this life, the next, or any others beyond it.

‘Tomorrow would always be tomorrow’s problem when my today was this good.’

And sigh….

Every now and again, you read a book that makes the butterflies take flight and refuse to settle… twice this year, Vicki James has been responsible for that!

Where The Bad Wedding Date wrapped me up in the warm and fuzzies and made me swoon from the first page, Whenever You Call had my heart in a vice with every word.

Often in romance, while you root for the couple, you find yourself leaning toward one of the main characters more than the other, being frustrated by their actions, their decisions, with this book, I wanted to wrap both Hannah and Logan up in my arms and protect them from the world.

Two imperfectly beautiful people who deserved the world.

It’s not often that the love story is this pure and tangible, this raw.

Their connection was strong and real, their story believable, and I wanted them to win, I wanted them to find their happy.

This is an unputdownable story of grief, trust and earth shattering true love and my god, did Vicki nail this one!

With words that stopped my breath –

‘if this was her goodbye, I wasn’t sure how the hell I’d ever recover to say hello to anyone ever again.’

Words that made me laugh –

‘She’s fifty-seven with a husband she’s been with since she was fourteen.” He paused. “Banging body, though.’

Words that flipped my stomach –

‘I forgot that the blush on her cheeks had become my new favorite shade of pink.’

This book locked me up and threw away the key!

I’m honoured to have had the chance to read this story in advance of it’s release and as an author, I thank you again Vicki for making me want to up my game… This book is gorgeous, it’s perfect, I loved it.

My highlights –

‘A goddamn magician who could drag a live rabbit out of a hat of death.’

‘That’s the problem with losing someone to drugs. You couldn’t just be sad. You had to be angry, too.’

‘You’re a ten and nothing less. Even with tear tracks down your cheeks, which I f***ing hate to see, you’re a ten. Whoever or whatever makes you feel less than that isn’t worth a moment of your time. Not even a thought. So, yes, you’re attractive, and that might be the craziest question anyone has ever had to ask me.’

‘My body bowed. My breaths stopped. My thighs shook, and my stomach tightened with a pain I wanted to spend my life in.’

‘Am I really the guy that gets to hear those words from you?’

‘Because it was always meant to be you.’

REVIEW: DNF...for now.

With that cover and that synopsis - this was going to be a shoo-in for me. I could feel it. I just knew it. There is nothing more exciting than adding a new-to-me author to my circle of reads. I'm super sad, super upset....or super mad at myself because I couldn't get past a few hurdles in this one to actually get to the crux of the book.

I was looking forward to this book. I saw the cover and loved it. I read the synopsis and was extremely excited. All the hoopla and hype that surrounded it made me more intrigued - but I think that is where I went wrong. I think I set myself up, and should have waded a little slower into the waters. I am the type to ask opinions - just as any reader is, but I am usually reading an early copy so I don't feel like I need to meet someone's expectations with regards to how they felt vs how I felt. This one I didn't sign up to tour, so I read it on KU. Man, oh man, it just didn't work for me and I'm legitimately sad.

I am merely saying this didn't work for me. ME. I felt like the male POV was contrived and overly emotional in a way that just made it feel fake. I didn't even like the way he all but stalked Hannah - which is weird coming from me, because I like a man that goes after what he wants!!! That's one of my "oh yeah" moments and this time, it wasn't hitting me like it really should have.

I like a strong male voice in my books. The kind that is confident and exudes strength. I don't like to read a weak man, or a man that is too soft and I think that's where Logan sat for me. He was just a little too whiny for me and it really just turned me off. He showed some good parts in the beginning that gave me a smile or three, but the over-dramatics of both characters really soured me. Again, it's supposed to read as an emotional story, I get that. We lost a husband. A father. An idol. A patient. I totally get where this was supposed to go. It just didn't work for me because nothing felt genuine and that really stifles my emotions when I'm trying to connect with the characters.

I think the biggest realization that this was going to be overly dramatic in all the "give me attention" ways was when Hannah repeatedly reminded me as the reader about the emotions that she was feeling or was supposed to be feeling - instead of setting up the story with this narrative in the forefront, and then allowing me to feed on it. I don't need the therapy notes about how every little thing goes down. I just didn't need that. I also raised an eyebrow at the fact that she passed out from a "panic attack" and that was apparently normal. As someone who suffers pretty bad, I've been hospitalized from them a handful of times and have been rocked to my core - I totally get it!! I do. Even the descriptions she gave for the noodley feeling your body goes through after an attack were spot on, but I have never passed out and that felt a little overly dramatic given the situation at hand. I am not saying it won't happen, but it's highly unlikely. It just didn't line up for me. Or when there was a "queue" of people behind her when we call them lines over here. Or the fact that Logan could just easily move her to the passenger seat without regard for there being a center console - like she was a 25 lb child - "up and over, there ya go!" No. I know I sound like I'm super picky...I mean, I am - but I'm not. It's when things start to pile up that I find myself nitpicking. The snowball effect takes hold and that's when I know I need to step away because I won't be able to enjoy the book for the love story being told, only seeing the issues I'm having with words and descriptions.

I desperately wanted the Hero to find redemption.
I desperately wanted the heroine to find love again.
I desperately wanted to fall in love with these characters because the plot was there...

This could have - should have - worked for me. I believe that whole-heartedly, so maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind. SOO, maybe this will be picked back up later. I sit here and see all these glowing reviews and I wonder why I couldn't look past all these little issues to get to the good part. I want to pick it back up. And to be honest, this is the first book I've genuinely wanted to put down, walk away to collect myself - only to come back and continue reading. That's my hope. So this is a hold spot...for now.

"I'm the guy who accidentally came into your life to help you breathe easier for a while. It doesn't have to be forever, Hannah. It just has to be now."

"But you've never loved anyone before."
"Because it was always meant to be you."

When you read a Vicki James book you know that you're going to be reading a beautifully crafted story and this one is no exception. With the intensity and depth of emotion that Vicki's writing brings this is probably her best book to date. I have enjoyed some of her other books equally as much, but the quality of her writing here is on another level. The dialogue, spoken and internal is nothing short of beautiful in parts and evokes both heart-rending and heart-sighing moments. Such was the quality
Vicki even got me wanting more from Cole. She enticed me with his broken character so that by the end, for me, he was just as much a leading character as Hannah and Logan. In the scene with his letter, I couldn't help but think how much I'd love to hear his story too.

As for Hannah and Logan, what do I say about them? Logan was a man who could quite easily have come across as cheesy and too good to be true in the wrong hands. Vic made him anything but. The epitome of a perfect, if slightly flawed, hero who I know will remain a favourite of mine. I loved his words, his wisdom and...just him! Hannah was also written with perfection. A strong woman who had forgotten for a while who she was and what she was capable of. Even in the darkest times for her character when dealing with Cole and the aftermath, she never once came across as weak. I loved how she finally realised that for herself. Of course, I can't omit to mention Belle who added so much light to this raw and intense story. In many ways, the fierce little six-year-old was the pivotal member of the cast. The catalyst for everything.

I thoroughly recommend that you read this book and be prepared to be surprised. I loved how I thought it was going to be one thing when I started it but it ended up being something entirely different; a beautiful slow build from a story of grief to an epic tale of love.

Well done Vicki James, another triumph.

“I’d finally fallen in love, and it already hurt so much worse than I ever thought it could.” ~ Logan

I think I felt every emotion while reading Logan and Hannah’s story. I also didn’t know whether to hate Cole or feel some sort of empathy for him. This book is about so much more than just falling in love. It’s also about healing and finding yourself.

Cole’s rockstar fame and his family weren’t enough to tame his demons and he succumbed to his addictions. Logan failed to save Cole’s life like he saved so many others as a paramedic. He couldn’t shake the guilt that caused and he put himself in Hannah’s life with intentions of making sure she would be okay and would get through the loss of her husband. However, the closer they got the harder it was for Logan to tell Hannah the truth for fear of breaking her again.

Hannah put her heart out there so many times for Logan, who was secretly struggling between right and wrong. But he always came running when she needed him, whenever she called. Logan was everything Hannah needed and deserved. I wanted them to be together and I couldn’t handle the anxiety that brought on. When the wall finally came crashing down I wasn’t as prepared as I thought I would be.

Then just when I thought everything was going to be okay, the rug got pulled out from under me with such force. They say sometimes you don’t realize what you have until you lose it, or almost lose it. Logan came into Hannah’s life for a reason and maybe Cole had more to do with it than not. They found themselves through each other. This book does have an HEA, but not before the author tears your heart out a few times over first. Despite that, I loved it all and there was definitely a lot of healing in the end.

“You once told me that you’d be there for me whenever I called, Logan. You promised. Well, this is me calling, and I need you to answer,” I whispered. “Come back to me.” ~ Hannah

4.5 stars

I don't know where to start with this review. I've never been this torn on what my rating would be but I'm swinging from 4 and 5. It will take me a while to come to the final one, so for now I've settled in the middle.

This book isn't like one I've read before. It was a beautifully written heart breaker of a tale. One that isn't exactly how you think it will be. One that will make you switch from tears to smiles in a turn of a page. I want to go into detail on all the characters concerned but I don't want to give anything away, not even a word. So I'll remain quiet.

This books is great and a total recommend from me. As this is my first read by this author I was surprised at just how well she sets the mood and pulls your emotional out of you. As well as how she sets the characters out and makes you love them, even the not so nice ones. Making me want to read more and definitely tell everyone this book needs to be read.

This was my first time reading this author, and man, what a journey it was. This book was so emotional that I needed to take breaks while reading, and my heart literally ached for Hannah and all she went through. But the way Logan loved her and her daughter? Be still my heart!!

Hannah was married to a Rockstar who she once thought saved her from the life she had, only to snare her in his pretty prison filled with lies, deceit and cruelty. Over the years he took everything from her and left her questioning who she really was. So when she notices that he's abusing drugs again, she's had enough. She won't let their daughter have their heart broken again and again by her father, so she decides to save them both. Only she has no idea that would be the last time she would see her husband alive.

Logan is the paramedic who tried so hard to save Hannah's husband, but he was too far gone. He's taking the loss extremely hard (especially since it reminds him of a personal tragedy) so he checks in on Hannah and her daughter from time to time to make sure they are OK, but of course they aren't. Logan can't make himself leave them alone, and when they start a delicate friendship, Logan quickly realizes just how broken Hannah is -- not just for the sudden death of her husband, but with how she was treated and disregarded throughout their marriage. (Side note, if you can't tell, I really hated Cole) and with the help of his and her daughters unwavering love, she blossoms into the woman she always wanted to be. And God, what a beautiful sight that was! But with Logan holding onto a huge secret, will it all be lost in the blink of an eye?

I really loved this story. The relationship between Logan and Hannah was beautiful, and although I don't always love slow burns, it was needed here. I loved how this author paid special attention to Hannah's mental health, and how taking care of herself was the most important thing she could do. I'm so happy with the way things ended, and will definitely be reading this author in the future!

“You once told me that you’d be there for me whenever I called, Logan. You promised. Well, this is me calling, and I need you to answer.”

There are writers, and then there’s Vicki Freakin’ James. Someone who has the ability to drag you into her world, captivating you with her beautiful words and poetic paragraphs. I think I took a screenshot of at least a hundred quotes that left me feeling speechless and dazed. I honestly couldn’t stop reading these mesmerising words. So much so, I finished in one sitting, ignoring the world around me, and wondering where Vicki was going to take me. There were moments where I cried, smiled and held my breath. And that one, beautiful moment when I released a sigh and felt at peace.

“His life was my life now. Without one, the other was doomed.”

I hate writing reviews because I feel like I never quite do the story justice. But what I will say is this; pick up the book and fall in love with Logan and Hannah, and Vicki’s wonderful words. You honestly won’t be disappointed.

When it comes to a book that is THIS GOOD I'm always at a loss for words because whatever I say just won't do it justice. I've said before that Vicki is the queen of romangst, and she still holds that crown! Her words have the power to make you feel every emotion that the characters are feeling, and take you on a journey with them throughout the pages experiencing everything they do. There were times when my heart was in my mouth and I felt sick not knowing what the outcome would be. There were other times that were so heartfelt, so raw, that all you wanted was for the main characters, Hannah and Logan, to have their happy ever after with each other! A wonderful story of finding love again and discovering it for the first time.

Wow, what an amazing read! A dramatic and emotional love story between the widow of a rockstar, and the paramedic who treated her husband as he died. This book sucked me in and kept me captivated from start to finish, it’s beautifully written, and I loved it so much.

Logan is an LA paramedic who is struggling with guilt after America’s biggest rockstar died on his watch. Trying to make amends, he watches his wife from afar, wanting to make sure she and her little girl are coping ok.

Hannah’s life turned upside down after her husband’s death. She and her little girl are both grieving, but she’s forced to do it in view of the public and intrusive paparazzi. And worse, nobody knows that she had separated her husband just before his death, which further complicates her feelings.

A grieving wife was only supposed to mourn her famous husband’s death in one way for it to be deemed acceptable:
With absolute, unfixable, wailing to the skies heartbreak.
For me, it was a little more complicated.

When she hits rock bottom, Logan is there to help her during and after her meltdown, and they develop a sort-of-friendship when he promises to be there for her if she needs anything.

“Everyone you meet is a risk, but maybe I’m the guy who accidentally came into your life to help you breathe easier for a while. It doesn’t have to be forever, Hannah. It just has to be now.”

“Whatever you need from me, it’s yours.”

Slowly and realistically, Logan becomes Hannah’s person, the one she goes to when she’s sad or overwhelmed, when she needs help or a shoulder to cry on. And as their friendship develops, they fall for each other in the most beautiful slow burn.

This was love, even if only one of us felt it, and as I sank into that kiss with her, she became pure heaven against my lips in a world where everything else had always felt like hell.

The feelings are there, but their grief is complicated, and Logan knows that his secret will end whatever is happening between them. It’s a journey, and it plays out beautifully, with drama, emotion, realistic and well-handled angst, and I couldn’t get enough!

“I’m willing to take this as slowly as you need to,” I ran my hand through her hair. “As long as this is what you want. That’s all that matters to me. That you forgive me for my past mistakes and that you trust me to protect our future.”

Both Hannah and Logan have a lot to work through in this book as they deal with their grief, and issues from their past, and find a way to keep going and claim the happiness that they so desperately want. It’s a difficult road, but it’s realistic, and they handle it so brilliantly, healing, growing, and fighting for their HEA, and I loved watching them find it.

“Some people do know what they want forever, and I want that…with you.”

I loved this book. It’s beautifully written, I loved Logan and Hannah, and I was so completely swept up in their gorgeous story. This is my first read by Vicki James, and I’m looking forward to reading more of her work.

Such a great read – 5 stars!

★★ PRE-RELEASE EXCERPT - WHENEVER YOU CALL ★★

“What do you need from me?” I asked her, my voice gentle.

Her eyes searched mine. “I don’t know.”

“You do, Hannah,” I said, taking a careful step closer. “You’re just too afraid to ask anyone for it because you haven’t done that before. You don’t need to be afraid of asking me. Whatever it is, you can have it.”

“Why can’t all men be like you, Logan?” she asked, another breath going in only to cut her in two on the way out. “Why can’t all men be good?”

“Don’t put me on a pedestal.”

“Why not?”

“I don’t deserve to be there.”

“I think you do.”

I lifted my hand to her face, brushing a falling tear away with my thumb before I rested my palm against her cheek. Hannah’s eyes closed, and she leaned into it, her nostrils flaring as she pulled in her first real breath since I arrived.

“That’s it,” I whispered. “Keep breathing like that.”

She nuzzled into my hand even more, and I heard a soft whimper rise before she swallowed it back down and licked her lips. Lips that were swollen because of her distress, more tempting than ever. I imagined pressing my mouth against hers and tasting her tears. I imagined kissing her back to life, my palms sliding over her shoulders until I had her neck cupped in my hands, her eyes fixed firmly on mine before I used my tongue to quieten every dark thought she'd ever had.

But I couldn’t be that guy for her.

I had to be this one instead.

The one who never got to touch her as more than a friend.

Whenever You Call is an outstanding, emotional and beautiful story. One that I simply could not put down! Vicki James always writes the most incredible narratives, and this book, as expected, is perfect in every way.

You will fall in love with the leading characters in an instant. I couldn’t help but empathise and sympathise with Hannah, Logan and Bella from the moment I met them. All the characters play their parts incredibly well to make this story such a compelling read - each bringing something different to the storyline. I felt so many different emotions whilst reading this book - which I loved. I can’t tell you how many times I found myself reading with the biggest smile on my face, and thinking back over the whole story it was those scenes that I loved the most. I wish I could have bottled up those feelings to have at hand whenever I need them!

The author has this incredible talent of writing the most fabulous stories with words that completely captivate me. There are little things that are said throughout this narrative that perfectly emphasise important messages - many of which I have highlighted on my Kindle to look back at should I ever forget them. All the characters have a way with words that enhanced my reading experience - ensuring I remained connected to themselves and the storyline at all times.

Hannah and Logan’s journey is a must-read, and this narrative is their journey not just their story. They both have to work through their own heartache and apprehension before they can possibly consider moving forward. As much as I loved it when their interactions made me smile, their times of uncertainty also kept me glued as I was eager to discover how the story would unfold. I know I have said this many times when reading romance stories, but this truly is a couple who are made for each other. Where can I find my very own Logan? Goodness, I wish I knew because everyone needs one! I absolutely adore both Hannah and Logan, and was rooting for them both to be happy…. preferably together.

This incredibly beautiful love story is one that I must insist you read. I know that this is a narrative that I will revisit time and time again – it is that good!

5 stars.

Wow, what a journey! Vicki James does not hold back in this gripping and emotional tale of second chances. Both Logan Thomas and Hannah Moore have known their fair share of loss and maybe it's fate or maybe a bit of luck from beyond, but somehow they meet and start a most unusual kind of friendship that leads to oh, so much more. And I was there for every angsty moment.

This slow-burn romance needed to be full of trepidation. Hannah's recent tragedy has defined her in ways she never thought would happen. Her seemingly innocent run-in with Logan is practically heaven-sent as the broody paramedic may just be the ultimate balm she needs to move on from her troubled time with husband Cole Newman. I understood the whys of her hesitation to trust anyone in her way-too public life and it made sense for her to take things at a literal snail's pace. But the real standout here is Logan himself. Holy moly, the man can truly beat himself like no one else can but his heart is beyond selfless and his nonstop guilt at not telling Hannah all he knows about Cole's last moments may just break them before they truly get started. However, his loyalty and calming nature combined with his sexy ways make him unforgettable and I was thrilled Hannah started to notice that as well.

A series of stops and starts combined with extremely touching albeit somewhat painful moments are at the crux of this book and I could only hope I'd be rewarded with a real good HEA for all Logan and Hannah endure. Bella Newman is a huge standout and although I'm not much for books about offspring, I could imagine her becoming a singer like dear old dad. And Kate was a bright spot when needed and made her mark on this reader as the best friend everyone should have in their lives.

Whenever You Call will undoubtedly put you through the wringer but the love that can't be denied between these two survivors is worth all the agony and despair.

4 big stars!

STUNNING & COMPELLING LOVE STORY!
This book EXCEEDED my expectations!! It's not that I didn't expect it to be good, just that I've never read this author so I truly had no idea what to expect. The writing, the characters and the plot was perfection. My attention was completely taken by Logan, Hannah and little Miss Bella. The feelings that these characters dealt with just broke my heart. I couldn't tell you how many times I'd just find tears filling my eyes and my heart hurting for Hannah, especially Bella...but also Logan.

In addition to the love, admiration and tears I felt for the main characters also came anger and hate for another character. But leave it to the author to teach this reader about mercy through her heroine. Everything that she endured by the people who were supposed to love her the most will either bring you to tears or anger. I adored Hannah, you couldn't help but feel in awe of the strength and love that this woman still possesses after everything.
Logan had my heart from the very beginning and never once lost it. This man was everything a hero should be and if you make it through this book with not a single ounce of feeling for this man I'd have to wonder why you're reading romance. He is no doubt one of the best and truest heroes I've read all year. I just love a good hero, and Logan checked every single box.

You'll enjoy this one if you love:
*second chances at love
*single mom
*hollywood/famous life
*first responder hero
*highly emotional
*slow burn (I'm not usually a huge fan of slow burns but this one stole my heart!)

My first book by Vicki James but I've already dug into her backlist. Can't wait to read more of her work.

I love Vicky James books and was very excited when she had a new release out. This one doesn't fail to impress. This book was beautifully written and delivered a very raw and emotional story line. The characters are wrote exceptional well, and had great chemistry with their story going from grief to love. I think its my favourite to date of the authors. Definitely a 'can't put down' book, recommended!

Logan is compassionate, caring, and kind, and is an EMT who is consumed by guilt that he was unable to save his best friend and a rockstar from a drug overdose, but he is determined to look out for Hanna and her daughter. This gifted author has an amazing ability to weave her stories in such a way, that the reader is enthralled throughout her magical tales. This is a well written story which is an emotional roller coaster, with guilt, regrets, trauma, truths, humor, healing, loss, and love, which leads to a riveting and addictive page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Hannah had been through hell. Delt with alot from her husband then he died.

Logan wow did he have alot of demands in his closet. He pushed all his problems to the back and didnt want to deal with them.

Hannah and Logan together had so many emotions toward eachother that they didnt know how to not cross lines.

I am so damn lucky that I got an arc of this book .

Each word I read etched themselves to my soul .
My heart beat with sadness , & hope reading this story .

Hannah & Logan were adrift, lonely in a sea full of people . Both fighting the hurt from the life,s they’d lived .
Then once they meet they fight the feelings that they don’t understand, or trust . Guilt from feeling happiness is a hard demon to beat .

The world could break them , but even more scary than that , they could break each other .

Such a beautiful, beautiful story .

I don’t want to spoil anything by saying too much, so I’m just going to finish this review by saying that Whenever You Call is a must read.

Whenever You Call by Vicki James is a beautifully written and thoughtful book dealing with grief and the guilt associated with it. Set in Hollywood, it is an emotional, forbidden romance about two broken people coming together to find the light after years in the dark. A tortured hero haunted by an event in his past, which totally changed the course of his life. A broken heroine who throughout her childhood only wanted to be loved but fell in love with the wrong person and is suffering the consequences of that attraction.

Hannah becomes a single parent due to the selfish actions of her husband who is a famous rock star. The line between love and hate is thin for Hannah because for years Cole has walked all over her and their relationship was very toxic. Not only has she had years of broken promises and lies, she has had to deal with his public affairs and the paparazzi. Their daughter Bella, worshipped her daddy so Hannah has to put on a brave face and push her feelings aside.

Logan became a paramedic due to a tragic event when he was younger and has been haunted by those demons ever since. He is determined to help and save people while constantly trying to prove himself.

“It’s my job to take care of people.”

The couple first meet accidentally when Logan makes a dubious decision because he can’t deal with his concerns over his famous case and understands what Hannah must be going through. At the same time Hannah’s actions backfire when she is trying to face up to her new reality and be there for her daughter. Coincidence or not, what happens next changes both their lives and is the catalyst for their emotional journey.

These two have such a strong connection and a fantastic chemistry even if they both fight it to the end. Both have to learn to trust again, believe in this unexpected relationship and love for each other. They share far more about the current trauma they are both coming to terms with so what will happen when his secret is revealed. How do they negotiate a relationship with all the attention it will bring and could they save and heal each other under the glare of Hollywood.

The star of the show is Bella. The saying ‘Out the mouths of babes’ is so applicable as she sees so much more than anyone thinks. She is an absolute delight and brings the couple together when they really need it. I loved the memorable narrative and how Logan comes out with the most amazing and thoughtful words. He is full of sage advice which is ironic as he rarely follows it himself. The author makes you feel such empathy for both characters, which makes it so much more than just a love story. It’s not a heart and flowers tale but a raw and realistic look at how other people actions can affect your life and make you question everything. Although there is heartache and sadness, the ending is uplifting and provides closure to an unforgettable story.

WOW.. just wow..
I’m almost struggling to find words here. This book was SO GOOD! It’s slow burn that absolutely simmers and builds at this almost agonizing rate but at the same time the sexual tension it creates is straight fire! And with the situation they are in there is no other way it could have worked. Anything developing at a faster pace would have felt less genuine. But this? This didn’t feel like a romance novel I was reading… it felt like I was watching two people I’ve grown to care for fall madly in love in the middle of tragedy. It was simply beautiful.
I feel for Hannah so much. The things she’s gone without in her childhood and the things she’s sacrificed as an adult paints a picture of just how selfless she is as well as broken. The last thing she thinks about is her own happiness. And Logan, while he has his own baggage he struggles to come to terms with, he’s so caring and sweet I think it’d be harder to NOT fall for him. There’s so many things I love about his character I’m not even sure where to start. But my favorites are how patient and understanding he is, how attentive he is to Hannah, he’s loyal to his word, and without even really trying to be he’s sexy as sin! Even with mistakes made and secrets being kept he’s pretty close to perfect. He had me swooning constantly.
The storyline is amazing as well. So much guilt mixed with these strong feelings and then healing in different ways. It just unfolded so naturally and pulled at my heart from so many directions. By the time I’d reached the end I was so attached to these lives and the little moments they experienced I was a bundle of emotions. I smiled, I drooled, I cried, I grieved, I rejoiced, and I fell so in love with this story.
And let me say one more thing - the ending was everything. It gave me so much closure without feeling like the same ending I’ve read in so many other romance novels. It was perfect.
This one is going on my list of all time favorites because a book that can make me feel this much is one that I will stick with me. I cannot wait to recommend it to people and hope that it makes them feel the same things it did for me!
