Solid middle grade action adventure novel with a nice twist at the end.

This is a story about five tweens who are trying to solve an escape room. Ami received it as a gift for her birthday and she, along with Adoja, Oscar, Min and Ibrahim are tasked to "Find the Answer, Save the World" The things they need to do in order to beat each level become more and more dangerous and challenging. They must use all of their wits and abilities to solve the puzzles and escape.

Readers who enjoyed The Mysterious Benedict Society and Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library will definitely like this unique take on an escape room. The characters are interesting and the puzzles are engaging, and he twist at the end will appeal to young mystery lovers everywhere.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Ami arrives at the The Escape eager for a new escape room experience and, hopefully, some new friends to puzzle out the clues with. None of them could have ever anticipated the dangerous scenarios they would soon be put in or just how far their strengths and fragile new bonds would be tested. It seems that winning the escape room isn't all they are fighting for, the continuation of the entire planet is!

I loved Ami as a protagonist. Her quick wits, thoughtful gaze, and high intelligence were well-needed throughout her adventures but, just as her personality and strengths were exposed, so too were those of the other children she battled alongside. Each was given a distinct character and their voices made this a fun and immersive read, even if Ami remained a personal favourite throughout.

Every element this contained combined to ensure it a fun reading experience, which centred upon an escape room but included so much more. It proved more educational than expected and definitely included more twists than anticipated, too. Every reader, of all ages, will benefit from the moral ending and I closed this book feeling far more pensive and melancholy than I thought this seemingly fun children's book could ever make me.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the author, Christopher Edge, and the publisher, Nosy Crowe, for this opportunity.

Find the Answer. Save the world.
I love the idea of escape rooms, a group of people working together to find clues that will enable them to solve a series of puzzles. Ami loves solving puzzles and is excited by the challenge The Escape presents.

Ami is joined by four other participants. There’s enthusiastic Adjoa - “Think Lara Croft meets Indiana Jones, but with a better sense of style.” There’s Ibrahaim, who notices things other miss, and Min, the smart one. Then there’s obnoxious Oscar, the one I really, really wanted to vote off the island. And Ami? She’s the all-rounder.

There’s plenty of action in this book, with a need to not only solve each individual room but the overall puzzle. I consistently felt the characters were facing impending danger. This all made for a compulsive read.

The rooms the group explores included one where “old computers come to die” and an abandoned mall. I loved trying to figure the rooms out alongside the kids. Had I been invited to play, though, I would have been eliminated very early on.

Even if I somehow managed to survive the first room, the library (of all places) would have taken me out. While all of the connections that were needed to level up made sense, I don’t think there will be too many readers who will be able to confidently say they would have made it through the entire game.

The message, which quickly became obvious to me as Ami and her team moved through each room, was a really good one but it came across pretty heavy handed. Granted, subtle probably wouldn’t be the best approach given the gravity of the situation, but the twist that accompanied its reveal felt so jarring that it lessened the impact for me. I’m hoping the target audience will just go with it and find the message empowering.

When the kids were explaining things like the Mayan calendar and space dust, they sounded suspiciously like walking encyclopaedias. This will make sense by the end of the book.

I couldn’t figure out why Ami didn’t .

I haven’t managed to find the correct alphabet to decipher the symbols on Ami’s library card. Yet.

I loved David Dean’s cover image and the illustration that accompanied the beginning of each chapter.
“Do you still think it’s a game?”

This was definitely a fast paced, unique, to say the least, take on escape rooms! I always wanted to try one, but this is one escape room, that I'm very glad, I didn't partake in!!
It's meant for middle school age kids, or younger... I thought maybe a bit too scary? I kept thinking to myself, what father would send their kid to this escape room for their birthday, without knowing more about it??? Wth?? That's putting it mildly!
I had a feeling where this might be going, but was definitely surprised, and have to admit, while reading it, a bit disappointed by how abruptly, it ended.
The big twist, that bothered me in the moment....upon reflection, a couple hours later, though abrupt and completely unexpected, was quite unique.
So, I went from dnf, to deciding I would finish it, but not loving the ending... Now, upon further introspection, especially if the main audience is school age....with the underlying topic of such critical importance, that I feel strongly about, and so relevant in today's world... interesting premise, if not a completely satisfying ending...

An entertaining science fiction tale for middle grade readers, bringing in AI, climate change and the current trend for escape room games. Five twelve-year-olds are brought to a building that houses the mother of all escape rooms and are quickly plunged into a theatre of adventures, far more fantastic and dangerous than anything previously invented, and told it is their mission not only to escape but to save the world at the same time.

Ami, the main character, takes on the role of leader; Ibrahim is a finder, someone who can spot clues that others miss; Min is the clever one who can decipher the clues with an analytic mind; Oscar is short-tempered and prefers direct action to thoughtfulness; and Adjoa is a Jill of all trades and full of facts. Together they progress from scenario to scenario, facing a mechanical chess-player and a raging fire, a library filled with towering book stacks and a storm of dust, a Mayan tomb and a re-animated royal corpse, a ruined shopping mall inhabited with extinct creatures, a space ship voyaging to colonize Mars and having to avoid a meteorite storm, and finally an oceanic island covered with the refuse of human civilization.

The idea that there will be a twist at the end builds slowly. The adventures are too big and too real and the safety of the children is not guaranteed. They seem to have been invented by and for something beyond humanity. The twist, when it comes, is very good and unexpected. However, not enough is done through the story to explain such a climax. The children seem to be fighting for personal survival most of the time rather than working toward saving the world. So, when the tropical island arrives, the nature of the finale comes out of the blue. It becomes a very well written and exciting fantasy adventure with an environmental message stuck on the end to make it sound relevant. A good read which needed, dare I suggest, a little more philosophy to explain the nature of the children's tasks.

My word. From the word go, this hooked me in. This is non-stop, full of twists and turns. Whether it was the fancy building, the dusty library, the Maya temple or any of the other rooms, this kept me wanting more. These kids are clever, brave and unstoppable… way more so than I would ever be. The ending made me AUDIBLY gasp. Christopher Edge is a bloody wonder and this is fast-paced brilliance once again. Just incredible.

I am not part of this novel's target audience, so take the following with a grain of salt:
I wouldn't recommend reading this book

The characters are inconsistent (which is kind of explained by the end) and/or blatant stereotypes.
While reading I started thinking of them as NPCs who only exist to assist the main character

This book is a strange mix of disjointed themes with a less than original twist.
While the end does somewhat explain, why the Escape Room is neither coherent nor feasible in practice, it can't excuse everything.
The puzzles - and their answers - remain ridiculous

To me "Children have the power to change the world" is a overdone and rather dishonest statement. Especially when the kids in question only learn, why they are supposed to save the world, when the book is almost over.

This... was a weird one. I read it all in one sitting today, and ended up writing a review because I needed to process my thoughts. Because what the f did I just read. This was actually sitting at a solid 3 or 4 stars the whole way through, but the ending dropped it for me significantly.

I'm a little uncertain on the expected reading age for this book. It has a very large font and the characters and writing seems to be a middle-grade book, but this was very scary for a children's book. I'm talking characters straight up dying. Hardcore. It felt more YA in those moments. I liked the writing itself, it was an easy read and I found the puzzles and mysteries very engaging. I really wanted to know what was going to happen next and I liked the character cast. I did find Oscar kind of annoying - he had a character archetype and absolutely stuck to it - but overall they were a sweet group that had varied and interesting strengths.

However. However. The ending. I... what? Ultimately it wasn't a bad book but the ending let me down quite a lot, leaving me disappointed.

Any book by Christopher Edge is usually a treat, blending a great story with something to encourage discussion. Escape Room is no different.
Ami is treated to an Escape Room experience by her father, and she is keen to show her skills. Upon entering the room she is surprised to have to join with four other children, each of whom seems to have their own set of skills. Their Host tells them that, in fact, they have been chosen to save the world and that they need to find the answer.
From the outset we see Ami plunged into some horrific scenarios. Each room has a distinctive environment, and it was fascinating to watch them try to work out exactly what was needed in order to get to the next stage. My personal favourite was the library of dust, but the group also experience a Mayan tomb, a deserted shopping mall overrun by extinct animals and a space mission to Mars. I was stunned as we watched the scenarios progress, realising quite quickly that there was a lot more to this than we first thought.
By the end of the book the message was clear. This will certainly be of interest to readers on a number of levels, and I’m definitely going to recommend this to a number of students who have an interest in environmental issues.
Huge thanks to NetGalley for giving me the chance to read this before publication.

Escape room is an adventure, mystery and a game all in one story. It’s a short story at just under 200 pages and perfect for younger readers between 9-12. A fast read. Short chapters. Main character Ami is joined by others all hoping to escape the game. But with loses of her friends along the way, time running out and stress will Ami make it to the end and escape? Is this really a game or the end of the world?

A very clever story with a huge plot twist you’de never expect for an ending. Highly recommend. I was hooked and devoured it and I’m 27. A well deserved four stars from me.

I received a copy of this book through NetGalley and I was excited to get to grips with it. Especially after reading Reprieve earlier this year and being very disappointed. I was hoping that Christopher Edge would make better use of the escape room concept and do something exciting. At the very least, I thought it would have a better ending but that's not really saying much.

In Escape Room, 12-year-old Ami enters The Escape with 4 teammates. The group are given their task by The Host: to find the Answer and save the world. To do this, the group have to solve a series of puzzles in different escape rooms. It quickly becomes apparent that this isn't a normal escape room. As the pressure starts to build, Ami realises that the danger is very real. Will the group find the Answer in time and will everyone be able to get out in one piece?

Though it's a short and quick read, there is an awful lot going on in Escape Room. It does more than just tell the story of Ami and her escape room experience. It is a book that wants to start a conversation. There is depth to this story and it can get quite dark at times. There is a very real threat hanging over the narrative. However, I don't think it is too dark for the intended audience. It never strays too far.

I also think that the pace will help keep a younger reader interested. Personally, I missed a bit of depth and character development. I also think it became obvious where the story was going quite early on. However, I'm hardly the intended reader for this book. I can see this book surprising young readers and keeping them very entertained. It's the kind of book that they won't want to put down. I also think it will help them engage in important and timely issues. The kind of books that will start a conversation between children and parents. A great achievement.

I have enjoyed other Christopher Edge books in the past and they are always popular in my classroom, so I was keen to read this latest offering.

Ami is treated to an escape room experience where she meets her 4 teammates. Together they are tasked by The Host to find The Answer. However, this is no ordinary escape room. The team soon finds itself battling technology, travelling through time and even into space. Will they be able to find The Answer and make their escape?

This was an action-packed book and the pace was full-on throughout. Just when you thought the team had got somewhere, another fiendish puzzle appeared.

It is hard to go into too much detail without giving anything away, however this was a thoroughly enjoyable read and I have no doubt that children in my class will devour it.

Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers, Nosy Crow, for this advance copy in exchange for my review.

An absolute roller coaster of a read. I read this in one sitting.
Ami’s father has gifted her an Escape Room experience. From the first minute she is solving puzzles, trying to just get in the building.
From there she meets the 4 others who will make up the group.
Each room they go in gets bigger, more complicated, more dangerous and more difficult to escape from.
The author pulls no punches, there are sacrifices along the way and an unforeseeable twist.
An absolute must read.
Thanks to Nosy Crow and NetGalley for the eARC.

3 Star!
This book was an average read for me. It was good for the target audience and I enjoyed all the different locations and the historical / cultural information. I think the content of this book is for an older middle grade reader. I have to say I didn’t see the ending coming and it did take me by surprise!
Overall, I think this was a good middle grade book and I would be interested in picking up other things from Christopher Edge in the future.

✨ "When we play, we leave our worries behind. In the world of a game, we can take risks, hone our skills, make bold moves and invent winning strategies. We don't just escape from reality, but create a brand new reality."

That twist!!! 😮

This wasn't for me as I never really got into it fully despite the promising premise. I found myself bored and skimming most of the book. The characters felt very stereotypical i.e. of course Min and Ibrahim are the intelligent ones, right?!

I loved the last chapter though! I never saw it coming and felt it was brilliant, but it seems I'm in the minority 😂 It made up for my lacklustre reading experience and pushed my rating up to 3 stars instead of my intended 2 stars.

However, I did enjoy all the little tidbits about Mayan civilisations. Those who loves solving puzzles and video games might love this more!

Thank you Random House Children's, Delacorte Press and Netgalley for the ARC.

Wow. I-Wow. I went into this thinking it would be a wholesome middle-grade novel, and boy was I wrong. It's a captivating and thrilling read with a huge plot twist at the end. The main character Ami is really kind. However, I found the side characters to fall rather flat. I wasn't really emotionally invested in them, which is a shame considering this is an escape room story. Overall, while I don't love the ending, the lesson learned is sweet. The nature of the book defintly allows for potential in a second installment. :)

Ami is given a trip to an escape room by her dad. While there she makes some friends and they go on the adventure together. I really enjoyed the escape room aspect of this book and the different rooms the kids face. The ending was a little lackluster for me, but fine I think for the middle grade crowd. A solid read, but nothing that will stick with me long term.

Super fast read, super fun.
I thought it’d be a fun break from studying, just a whatever story, and it came with a huge twist I didn’t see coming.
I’m laughing at how delighted I feel by being so caught off guard! It has a beautiful message too.
I love reading these books and having my child like wonder restored.

There are a number of major problems with this book, all of which are explained by the ending, but none of which are justified by it

To name a few, the characters are underdeveloped and forgettable, the violence is too intense for the age range, and most egregiously, the puzzles make no sense whatsoever

Well, first thing I have to say - the ending! What the hell. I mean, I didn't check tags for this bok and I have no idea it's sci-fi before I started it... so that's on me... So honestly, the ending took me by surprise.
Overall, it's an interesting story, adventure and mystery. I love Escape room games, so I was curious to read a story about it. And I really enjoyed it. The game part. It was done well. The ending... while it was really surprising to me it also wasn't my favorite.

Very good book but it took a long time to get to the point , it's was dragging on a bit . The characters we're very smart and enjoyable to read about . I would recommend it if you like mystery books with unexpected endings . Personally I am not the biggest fan of it but the ending, oh my gosh it was brilliant 👏.

Unfortunately this book was not for me. It's a story about a girl named Ami who gets an Escape Room experience for her birthday. The premise seemed like something I would enjoy, but the story just felt very disconnected for me. Every part of the Escape Room felt like an entirely different story then one cohesive story. The author did try to explain why he did it this way at the end of the book, but it still just left me feeling disappointed. I also didn't like the part when they brought in the idea of the Maya temple and the gods, just felt like it wasn't even part of the story and I didn't like it.

Couldn't get into it. Plain and simple. Ami shows up at a warehouse where she's been directed to go by her father to play a room escape game. Once inside, the place seems deserted, but one by one, four other kids show up out of nowhere to also play the game. Then a host shows up and tells them to "find the answer."

Off they go into a series of rooms. An attic with an automaton chess player. A library where the books turn to dust. An ancient Mayan tomb with the Red Queen. A shopping mall with extinct animals. A space ship headed to Mars. And a beach littered with plastic. Disaster befalls them in each room and they are left in a life or death escape. The other kids are dying off one by one, until only Ami is left on the beach with her dad entering the picture to drop a bombshell.

I've never done an escape room game and maybe that's the problem. But honestly, this book is so far- fetched, rushed, underdeveloped that I don't think that's it. If you could taste the characters you'd say they were bland. And if you weren't rolling your eyes at the ending, which was thrown into the story out of nowhere, then maybe you're super smart and figured it all out at the beginning. The fact that the author had to explain it all in the afterward proves that he's not a detail guy.

I have a ten year old who has wanted to do an escape room for AGES so when an escape room themed book arrived on Netgalley, I had to request it for him.

He engaged with the book immediately and seemed to zoom through it. We discussed the book together and he said “I liked the tension which kept me on the edge of my seat. Also, the mechanical chess player because that was very clever”.
He’s a boy who doesn’t scare easily but he
rated the fear factor as 7/10 and was unnerved by some of the events in the book. Nevertheless it didn’t stop him reading on and he is keen to read other books from Christopher Edge.

There are salient messages about environmentalism and saving our earth which provoked a discussion at the dinner table, and that can only be a good thing.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to review an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I wish I'd liked this more because the overall concept of the escape rooms could be amazing.
I found myself underwhelmed with the characters throughout. Lots of arguing, not a logical approach, which doesn't make sense since they'd all signed up for an escape room experience.
The ending felt remarkably preachy for a book aimed at readers who are probably very aware of the climate change issue but who, being so young, are mostly without deciding making powers.
That being said, I'm not 10 so I'm not who the book is aimed. I'll put it in my class library and have no doubt that it'll fly from one pupil to another once word gets out.

Update.
The book has now been read by 5 children in my class. 2 absolutely loved it and the other 3 said it was OK and all would recommend it to friends.

Initial Thoughts: I spent most of the book thinking it didn't make much sense. The big reveal at the end somewhat cleared things up, but it was weird and, frankly, preachy. The book also explained literally every concept it introduced, ranging from what an escape room is to what a scavenger hunt is, etc. I do think children could be expected to know some of these things.
