Wow. A keyboard smash - such as we’ve all apparently agreed translates to “happy queer flailing” - does not a review make. But I also don’t want to dump too many spoilers up front. So let me take a moment to collect myself. [5 deep breaths]. OK…
Much as I love Yu being an adorable, straightforward idiot…I’m kind of digging him being a bit tricksy and ruthless (for a good cause) here and in the next volume. I mean, at first I was with Mika (“THAT’S your cunning scheme? Seriously?”) but no – Yu is actually being pretty smart when it comes to how to get Guren to spill what his plans are. And that newfound strategic thinking carries on into the next volume. But more on that in its time!
OMG, Guren’s plan! I mean, I kind of knew that at some point Yu was going to have to . That is how you create tension with a character like Yu! And then everyone else, including Mika, saying: “Oh, that’s rough! But the answer to this trolley problem is super simple, logically speaking.” And Yu being like: “It sure is!”…and choosing the opposite of what they expect!
And the flashbacks to a few millennia ago, with little Yu talking to the dead winged Mika in the glass box…Dang. More in the spoiler section, but let’s just say that if the setup looked to you like – that similarity did not escape Yu either, and his logic for how to help, based on that, is so adorable!
Also there’s a reveal about angel gender…which isn’t REALLY a reveal if you know how that usually works, mythologically speaking . But still, rather fun! Although…I’d really love if someone who actually speaks Japanese could weigh in on this section, because I’ve noticed some translation issues in other contexts* that could account for what seems like an odd choice of pronouns here. Japanese pronouns apparently work differently than English ones (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanes... ), with the choice often being determined by the gender of the speaker and the social situation rather than the gender of the person being spoken to. That would also clear up some things about Asuramaru, since he/they use “I” all the time, but – unlike in many Asian languages - there is no such thing as a gendered “I” in English!
* For example, the ‘Yuri on Ice’ subs making one of Viktor’s early lines “Do you have a girlfriend?”, despite viewers who know the language (and the direction the story is going) pointing out that it should be “Do you have a sweetheart?” since the Japanese relationship term is gender-neutral. Which would have made it a lot more obvious from the start that he was checking if he had competition!
I would love to include the gorgeous 2-page color image of Yu and Mika from this volume. But, since I couldn’t figure out how to do that, enjoy this adorable earlier one:
Heavy spoiler discussion: - Given his exchange with Shinoa at the end of the last volume, I was not surprised to see Mika looking displeased to be in Ferid’s truck going who knows where. Fortunately, he can pull Yu into “demon space” to talk about it: [Mika] “What are you doing? Now is not the time to be having a fun chat with friends!” [Yu] “Hm? Oh! Sorry, did you want to join in too?” [Mika] “No, that’s not it!...Think, Yu! Guren. Mahiru. Ferid. Krul. They’re in cahoots! They have been for years!...Before we let them use us, we have to investigate, and find out what that plan is!” [Yu] “Aha. I gotcha. But Mika?” [Mika] “Yeah?” [Yu] “I’ve got a plan. A good one! And it’ll get us to the bottom of whatever they’re plotting.” Yu wakes up…and just ASKS Guren, much to Mika’s annoyance. And then fights him, telling Mika and then Guren that his desire is to make Guren respect him so that he’ll trust him and lean on his help. Then Yu re-asks his question: “Was it you who murdered my family?” [Guren] “Yes. I did. I’m sorry.” For a moment it looks like Yu might stab him, but then he says: “I forgive you.” [Guren] “Why? It wasn’t altruistic. I had them killed for selfish reasons. You’re clearly the victim.” Yu replies that none of that matters because the two of them are family too and they have to rely on each other. “Right, guys?” Which is a perfect way to get Guren to open up!...But how must Mika have felt about that in the moment?! [Ferid] “Ooh! Ooh! We’re following their plan, so that makes us family too, Krulsie!" [Krul] “Say that again, and I’ll kill you." Why do I love their interactions so much?
- The flashback: [Yu] “I wanna play with Mika as soon as I can!” [The First] “But unfortunately enough, my child is currently dead.” [Yu] “Yep, I know! But I’m gonna wake him up, right?...It’ll be just like in those fairytales you tell me…the prince rescuing the princess! I guess that makes me the prince, huh?” [The First] “A Prince, hm? That’s a lovely idea. Though neither Mikaela nor I have a gender like humans. I can’t say whether or not he can become a proper ‘princess’.” [Yu] “Ooh! I know! Do you think I can fix him with a kiss?” Cue happy flailing. But also…you see why I find it weird that the First and angel-Mika are genderless but still referred to as “he”, right? But the First notes that he hasn’t “created quite enough sacrifices to bring him back.” Uggh, that’s ominous… [Yu] “I’ve got a secret! Want me to tell you?...Mika’s dead, right? So he can’t talk. That’s why we have to bring him back to life. Right?...But sometimes, Mika will still talk to me. So I put my ear to it close, just like this, to make sure I don’t miss whatever he says next.”… [The First] “He talks to you when he hasn’t spoken to me, his parent, in eons? If that’s true, it’s horribly cruel.” [Yu] “Well it is. Right, Mika?” Gah, so cute! Now I want to know what they said to each other…
- I love how when, on the truck, Guren still hasn’t said anything, Yu not only keeps needling him to spill it but the whole squad joins in! Mika asks what the price is, and Shinoa backs him up by noting that bringing back Shinya and the other 6 destroyed the whole world. Guren agrees, noting that if he’d just let them stay dead, and died himself, maybe he could have foiled the Demon Army’s plans. Shinoa figures they just would have set it up again, and starts blaming herself, figuring she only had a halfway OK life because of what Guren did. But Yu tells her to stop, saying that they all did what they had to, to survive.
- Meanwhile, with Saito and the vampires are questioning the First, we get further important backstory. Saito knows that he and the first few generations of vampires were experiments to try and find a “doll” strong enough to house Mika’s soul. Which is probably what Ferid meant when he said the First used to call him “Michaela”, but then tossed him aside! Then Saito discovered that he’d founded a sect of humans trying to turn vampires into demons. [The First] “I know. You immediately tried to interfere. You injected your own genes into the Ichinose family and founded a competing organization.” The Hyakuya sect. Gasp! So…does Guren have some kind of special inherited powers? Saito goes on to say he realized that an orphanage had suddenly been added to his organization, one that was experimenting on and killing children. And then one day a boy with a familiar face and name showed up: Mikaela. Wait…so what kind of vessel did the First eventually create? It certainly SEEMED as fragile as a normal human’s initially – but is this where that Seraph gene (or whatever it is) comes in? The First says the price to properly revive Mika is seven “sinful keys” and the life of every last vampire. Saito and the other vampires are like: “Yeah, while that would have the upside of solving our immortality curse, we don’t trust you. Hard pass!”
- So…Guren apparently has a giant underground room filled with the preserved bodies of everyone the squad has lost, including Mitsuba’s parents (who probably died in the first wave of the apocalypse). Kimizuki once again asks what the price for reviving them is, and Guren says there are three: “One. Of the people involved in setting off the spell, one will be cursed with eternal life. Two. Seven sinful keys are needed. Three. The lives of every last vampire must be offered in sacrifice.” Yu rightly points out a problem: Doesn’t that mean Krul and Ferid will die? [Guren] “Yeah, but they want to die^.” Yu is the only one with a conflict of interest…because Mika isn’t human. The price to resurrect him is the same as the price to resurrect humanity – so they can only do one or the other!
^ Hey, but what about Crowley, who's RIGHT THERE but doesn't appear to have been consulted?!
So, OK, I have questions about your plan, Guren: 1) While there are a lot more people than just the team’s families in that room, but Guren and his team can’t actually have collected up everyone who’s died in Japan, let alone the world…can they? 2) Does Guren even HAVE the seven sinful keys? I lost track of who was doing what with them, but I’m pretty sure Saito had a few. And the only way to get them seems to be from a Seraph, isn’t it? The only Seraphs they’ve got who might still have those keys are Yu and Mika (Guren already killed Kimizuki’s sister for hers!). Although it was heavily implied earlier that Yoichi and Kimizuki were experimented on too. So…yeah, I don’t trust that following this plan is safe for ANY of them! 3) Actually, even more ominously, both the First and Guren seem to need Yu specifically for their plans. And it’s already been established that he was never a normal human. So it seems REAL suss that neither of them has clearly explained what his part in this is supposed to be. The only bit we have heard, from the First via Noyu – also now Guren’s demon – is that Yu is supposed to be a sacrifice to bring Mika back. Which doesn’t sound great! 4) What are demons, in this plan? Because Mika isn’t a vampire anymore…but he used to be. And Krul wants to save Ashera/Asuramaru, so she probably wouldn’t be OK with this plan sacrificing her sibling. But, then again, she and Mika have this exchange when he asks if their interests are aligned. [Krul] “Mikaela. Would you want to live forever so badly, that you’d be willing to sacrifice your family?” [Mika] “No.” [Krul] “Then our goal is the same.” Which kind of implies that she thinks Mika might also have to sacrifice his immortality! 5) Who is Guren planning on cursing with immortal life if his plan goes through?
- And then we get Yu’s reaction to this trolley problem. Everyone expects Yu to go with the “save humanity” option. To be fair, the squad is probably NOT assuming Mika has to go back to being dead-dead for Guren’s plan to work or that Yu would be killed for another sinful key or be the one cursed with immortality – they’d probably have an issue with any of that! Even Mika says it’s OK for Yu to pick humanity…but Yu calls for him to be his sword, indicating that he is ready to fight everyone else he cares about in order to pick Mika! Not JUST Mika, actually, as we find out later – this IS Yu we’re talking about, and he cares about all his family - but good for him, for not bowing to the pressure to give up what he clearly cares about most for everyone else.
So it looks like this AMV-maker had it right 7 years ago when choosing 'Angel with a Shotgun' as a song for this pair: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSK3C... Bla bla bla.
Not too much happened in this but more revelations went hard. After Yu finally stands up to Guren, he takes everyone to where he has a collection of everyone's dead family members, and then finally explains the plan to bring everyone back. Apparently the cost is very great and isn't something Yu will be easily agreeing to: humanity or bringing Mika back.
Personally I think the entire plan is gas. I understand the squad wanting to bring back their dead family members but we are getting into an Avengers Endgame situation and I'm kinda like??? Those people are dead and have been for eight years, leave them alone omg. There may not be that many people left now but they still found a way to keep humanity going haven't they?? And who gets brought back? Only the people who died in the initial epidemic? What about all the people who died since then, or whose bodies are gone because there is also no way they saved everyone's dead body. Maybe I am just thinking too much into it when the answer is simply ✨magic✨.
There is another flashback to back in the day, with young Yu looking into Mika's coffin and talking about how pretty he is, like a princess, and how he wants to kiss him awake like a fairytale.😭😭 The cutest shit ever, I can't. Mika truly has always been the princess to Yu's knight in shining armor frfr.
We get some more vampire lore and what is going on between the First and the other vampires which is wild. That dude with the chains gives me the ick sooo bad and I'm begging for an explanation of what that shit even is.
The Yu and Guren fight went hard and I loved Yu telling him how much he appreciates Guren for saving him but he has to tell them the plan now and the truth or he's out. Like yesss stand up for yourself king.
Gnawing at the bars of my enclosure at Yu INSTANTLY going nah, fuck that after Mika is like it's okay!! that sucks for me but we can bring everyone back :) If you wouldn't doom humanity to save your lover, are you even an otp?🤌
I can't see Mika cries anymore T.T I just want a happy ending for Mika and Yuu. Can I get that please? And Now Yuu-chan has to decide if he saves Mika or humanity? I'm not ready yet but I really want to see what's coming next ❤️
"I can't give up on you" - Yuu to Mika ❤️

Dead people must stay dead. Just saying.
Espero respuestas. :D

This was almost a 3.5. It had a neat fight in the first half but while the second half had some proper explanations it ended up feeling a bit dry and story-dumping. If not for the nice ending it might've been 3.5. The first half is amazingly fun with it being just an awesome battle between Guren and Yu. The second half is where the issues come in as it's setup both on Guren's team with them questioning him for answers on his role with letting people die as well as the true cost of reviving the dead humans and properly explaining where Sika Madu and Rigr stand on the Vampire side. The explanations just feel a bit overstretched even with the Rome flashbacks showing Yu's ability to talk to Mika's corpse and the experiment-turned-wanna-live-forever-deal Sika made with the Vampires. Again it's a nice recap / proper explanation of the whole sitch post Guren's betrayal, Sika Madu's revival, and Mika's demonization which is needed considering how long this series has gone on and the various turning points and new directions. The revelation at the end that essentially the reviving thing will only work on all humans OR Mikaela (since he's an angel or whatever Sika Madu is) is neat. I'm guessing with the whole family shtick Kagami likes going for in Seraph of the End they'll easily decide to just do the ritual twice or some shit. Hopefully they commit to the all humans on Yu and Guren's team against Yu for a whole chapter or so for an amazing fight though.

Yu just chose Mika over the f-ing humankind. He has the chance to resurrect everyone, including Akane and the other kids from their orphanage, but he still chose to be everyone's enemy right now and save Mika alone. Now I see why Guren needed to bring them all to where the coffins are. The conflict of interest is deeply emotional and I'm on Mika's side — as always.

Omg the cliffhanger at the end of this one though! Talk about a lot of important details being finally revealed in this one too. Everything Guren and the vampires planned to do gets revealed and now Yuichiro is left with a terrible choice. I, honestly, do not know how this will go but I have to wait for volume 28 to come in english physically. Damn.
