She set out to save her friends. What she got was a king.
Not one moment of rest for Gandrett. Not as she sets out to rescue the Fae male who was taken from her just as she admitted her own feelings for him. Now, it is up to her—to her fighter’s mind, her determination, and to her growing magic that is expanding far beyond what she thought herself capable of.
If she can hold on just a little longer, she could save them all—Addie, who is suffering in the Dragon King’s claws, Mckenzie, who is fighting her own battles in the southernmost territory, the young Lords of Ackwood and Eedwood who are on their own, and her brother. Her brother, who might not need saving after all as he is on his way to Ulfray. But with a king on the Fae throne who is wrongfully inhabiting it, Drew might be just as safe there as anywhere else in Neredyn—which is nowhere. Because the lands are falling into darkness, and Gandrett must save her own heart before she can save anyone else.

Bahhh that ending!!! Give me book 6!! Normally I get bored in a series and am not excited about book 6 or 7 but the way she writes is amazing!!! I’m not bored at all and I’m so excited to read the next instalment of this series!! What a five star series so far!! Absolutely love it!!!
Addie is still having a very bad, no good day. Armand likes his ladies very large, scaly and aggressive? McKenzie is living out a rom com while everyone else is in a high fantasy. Something good better happen to Brax by the end of this or we’re going to have words Ms. Steffort. Gandrett and Nehelon are reunited and it feels so good. Valyn is still sus. Kepha is the adorable child we all needed. Drew has had more than one awakening in this book. And as always, Gordan does not get paid enough to deal with what he does.
10/10 would recommend.
I was given an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. My opinions are my own.
I was wondering whether I should reread all the books prior to this one, you know, so I could remind myself of the events BUT within the first few pages, EVERY DETAIL came rushing back to me! It's a testament to the author, having crafted such an enthralling saga, that it reminded with me. And boy oh boy, the tension is on immediately, no, "let's wean into the storyline slowly", just plunge right in and take off where it left off in book 4. And the phrase, "oh what a tangled web we weave" describes Angelina to perfection! From each chain of events, in each of the various kingdoms, the intricacies will have your head spinning, in a delightful way. What a sweetheart Kepha is, funny, intelligent and downright adorable. And good grief, how on earth is it possible that EVERY character is totally to die for? Well not literally, but to each capture a slice of my heart is no easy feat! My heart was pounding for them, edging them on, rooting for them, crying with them and for them, although I caught myself wanting to rattle McKenzie something silly. She is such a strong determined individual, she doesn't bend to anyone, yet this stubbornness leads to heartache, mostly her own doing. But in typical Angelina style, I KNOW she will correct McKenzie's wayward behaviour. Nehalon and Gandrett grow so much in this particular book, what they both endured was, well quite honestly, horrifying! So many events, so many complexities, so much endurance, so much intrigue, such vivid scenes, such enthralling storytelling, I could gush forever. I have quite a few favourite authors, authors that truly draw me in, and turn my stomach into mush, my intestines into knots, and Angelina is one of those. There's only one thing left for me to say, READ THIS SERIES!
◦ I've received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ◦
The 5th book in Shattered Kingdom series starts with a boom. We get Gandrett fighting on finding a way to save Nehelon from the towers and also finding allies to fight against the Dragon King.
Sadly this time the book for half of it felt a little bit dragging, at least for me, perhaps because the pace was a little bit slower than the rest 4 books – I can’t exactly tell what felt off, but I did feel like half of it was a little bit not so impactful as the others 4 were. However, that didn’t dim the light of this series at all.
Shattered Kingdom is an amazing series to read and with each book the plot thickens, the characters get bolder, their growth is amazing and with each book out there you get one step closer to the end of the series and while I’m sad to see it coming to an end, I’m also excited because I really want to know the outcome of Dragon King, what will happen with Addie and the future of each character involved into this series and the secrets.
What I particularly loved in this book was the relationship between Taghi and McKenzie – they’ve grown together so good and so amazing and I’m really excited about reading more about these two because the tension and romance between them is just perfect.
The relationship between Gandrett and Nehelon is chef’s kiss, they’re lovely together and while I’m not a big fan of the fated mates trope – this trope in the book was so perfectly done and I loved it so, so much.
Overall even if the book felt a little bit off for me (at least a portion of it) – I’ve enjoyed it, it’s been a great read and I’m really excited for the next one in the series to see what else we’re going to receive – what secrets will be revealed.
Now I get to wait until May and November for the last two in the series, but I’m not mad. When I noticed when they came out I told myself, slow down, I had even planned to wait a couple months before reading this book. Give myself a small break. Yeah, that didn’t happen!
It’s a really well written fantasy story with humans, Fae, dragons, and evil. Multiple story lines with multiple points of view that are all interconnected, yet transition seamlessly. The author takes her time, some instances too much, to build the relationships and story lines which is very enjoyable and makes for multiple, long books. However, I find that I enjoy each story line and all the characters and that’s not something that usually happens. Usually, there will be one or two story lines with characters that I just struggle through to get back to the others I care about and enjoy.
I’m eagerly awaiting the next book! Just hope by May I can remember all the stuff from previous books.
This series is simply incredible. I can’t believe that we are on book five already. Once again the world building is so detailed and beautiful that you feel and see everything as we travel on this journey especially with Gandrett and Gordon on their way to rescue Nechlon. Faced with incredible danger this duo fight their way through and battle on with some fae friends they pick up along the way. It’s gripping, it’s enthralling and as I write this I realise nightfall has fallen, whoops! Where do that afternoon go!! There’s tons of action, tons of adventure as the author does a fantastic job throwing twists and turns at you some you definitely will not see coming. I adore all of our mc’s and am hoping that they will all come together to defeat the enemy but only time will tell.
That slow burn still be burning with a hint more fire. The different views we got this book were more appealing than the last book because they all had so much going on. Can’t wait to find out how the story continues!
This book series is so interesting. I love all the twists and turns it takes. How even when you think you know what's going to happen next it surprises you and goes another way. Can't wait to read the next book.
Gandrett faces the meister as she prepares to return to the Lost Mountains. With Andrew safe, she and Gordon, along with a band of trusted fey, set out to free the rightful king. In doing so, she and Nehelon are forced to accept the truth before returning to Ulfrey.
The continuance of this story is getting soook good. So many unseen surprises waiting for you on each page. Gandrett and Nehelons story is my favorite. I was a fan of Valyn, and believed him to be the king and love of Gandrett, but by the end of the book, I no longer like him. For an author to make me have these feelings shows how amazing this book is. We know Addie is the dragon, and I applaude her bravery for the sneak attack she just pulled on the dragon king!
After saving the Fae from a centuries old curse, by falling in love with the King, Gandrett must continue her quest to save not only Neredyn but also her fateful companion, now trapped in the towers. It is time to come back to the Priory to unearth the secrets behind her own assignment, her nature and the magic that keep growing inside herself. This is Gandrett’s epic journey, but no hero has ever fight alone. All our loved characters are back, each of them walking their own path to save the realms. We accompany Gandrett in her efforts to confront the Meister and save Nehelon; McKenzie trying to find her own way in Khila; Armand and Brax, each of them fighting to save their kingdoms from the new awaken Dragon King, as well as Addie surviving a day at a time, fighting against all odds to keep her humanity and have a chance to fight the Shygon cult. I could keep going, but I shall not… least I give away any of the multiple twists you will encounter in the story 😉
"Secret Court” is the fifth installment in the “Shattered Kingdom” epic high fantasy series by Angelina J. Steffort, an extraordinary epic fantasy tale that follows Gandrett Brayton , a former acolyte in the Order of Vala, attuned to deprivation and training from a very young age to be a fighting warrior for the Order, which first assignment turns out to be an adventure of epic proportions. In Steffort’s tale each and every character is unique and multidimensional and plays a pivotal role in the wide canopy of events. Even intended ‘secondary characters’ (Gorman, Taghi, Drew, Kepha, or even the Meister and Liri) are as fully fleshed as our heroes, all them relatable and very ‘real’, they can fill your heart with awe or make your blood boil, and that is exactly what they are supposed to do, just any flesh and blood friends and companions in real life. There is in fact, the fine humour and perfect chemistry between the characters what really makes this series truly exceptional.
It goes without saying but it’s nevertheless worth repeating 😊: Angelina J. Steffort writing style is superb, fluid, enthralling and captivating, masterfully tying character development with action and rich descriptions of Neredyn into a captivating story, populated by original, multidimensional and fully fleshed-out characters, and weaving a luring plot that evolves nicely page by page, revealing unforeseen twists and ramifications, keeping the book always interesting and a real page-turner, and while the action maintains the reader on the edge of the seat until the very last page, and beyond 😉 The only caveat being… the book eventually ends (how dares it!) and still the reading satisfaction compensates for the waiting time until the next instalment releases… even if… I can’t hardly wait :-!
The Milky Way is going out of ⭐ and they are still not enough to rate this series
This series keeps getting better and better. This is book 5 in the Shattered Kingdom series by the amazing Angelina J Steffort. In order to fully experience this epic high fantasy journey, you need to start with book 1. The way the story unfolds over each book and how the each character evolves is incredible. This picks up exactly where we left off with the last cliffhanger and I warn you now this is another beauty but it’s so utterly thrilling you can’t wait for more. Can Gandrett save Nehelon just when they admitted their feelings for each other, can Addie in her new form withstand the Dragon Kings mind control, will Brax be ok, will Armand survive and will McKenzie find her place? Most importantly the war is coming, will these amazing characters be able to band together to defeat Shygon worshippers, who’s powers are growing along with the Dragon king and his powerful allies revealed in this book. Talk about powers, there are even more interesting developments with Gandretts! I am so excited for you to read this, you have no idea. The story gets more thrilling and action packed and romantic as it goes. You will love nearly every character and feel their grief, anger and happiness although the later feelings are fewer give all they must endure. When you do feel them, your heart will literally feel like it’s bursting with joy! This is definitely building to be one of my favourite fantasy reads. It’s slow build but trust me, it’s well worth it and that’s the beauty of getting to really know these characters and fall in love with them. Brilliant writing from Angelina and huge thanks for allowing me this advanced reader copy in return for a non biased review as I absolutely loved it. Top marks 5/5 epic high fantasy stars Release date is 30th November and the previous 4 books are all available on kindle unlimited.
Oh my goodness. Where to begin?! The end of book 4 once again left my heart hurting. This author is good for that. When Gandrette left Nehelon at the towers, after he sacrificed himself for her, I thought I might break. So much left unsaid but left us overwhelmed with emotion. This book picks up with Gandrettes return to the priory to seek out the Meister after he basically sent her on a death mission. Handing her to the queen of fae. We learn the Meister isnt who everyone thinks he is. Gandrette continues to expand and mature her powers, even water abilities. I feel like we see the main character row a lot in this particular book of the series Falling more into the role of Who she is going to be and who she needs to be in the future. When Gandrette and neleon Finally come back together The truth is awoken in both of them. However we still do not get to say that come completely full circle instead the author hits us with the torturous slow burn. So much changes after they get back to the fae kingdom. And that is where the story drops off as far as Gandrette and Nehelon are concerned. Leaving us as a cliffhanger and Vahlyn to determine what happens next. Meanwhile in another kingdom Eddie has possibly broken through the dragon kings facade and brought Joshua to the surface. In this book, we also learn a lot more background story on both Gordon and Palvin. I'm hoping the mess with Palvins heart doesn't cause trouble later on.... Overall, another amazing book in this series. I can hardly wait for the next book!

This series is just wonderfully addictive! The fifth book did not let me down and continued to deliver the high quality we are used to from the preceding installments. As with the other books I loved the writing, adored the characters and enjoyed the story so much. I tried to savour every minute and kept rereading a lot of scenes because I relished them so much. Additionally, the humor was fantastic and had me laughing out loud a couple of times. I was very pleased with how the story and romance progressed and already feel a little anxious with the inevitable ending of this series. There is still so much left that we need to see being resolved! There is so much left to discover, learn and enjoy in this world! And all the complex and compelling interplays of the many, many characters are just so interesting and satisfying to observe after spending so much time with most of them. Everything about the world and its characters is just so enriched and lively. I could lose myself in it for many more hours never wanting it to end. Naturally, I am very excited to see more of our favorite power couple in action. They just keep getting more badass and deserving of their happy end with each book. But my heart also breaks for all the others who deal with their own challenging situations. Needless to say that I cannot wait for spring to come to see how all their journeys continue and converge once again!
As I am reading this long awaited book, I'm getting different vibes. As if it isn't written as well as the other four🤔,perhaps that's just me though.
When Gandrett and Nehelon are together 🥰 I swoon! I love those two.
I can't believe all the surprise twists, the deaths, the resurrections! My mind is spinning! I never even predicted some of the newest developments. Just wowed me.
If I could, I wouldn't have finished it because it's just that good. Like I want to save it for later. But it was so good that I couldn't stop reading🤦🏽♀️. The drama of a great book! I know I said it wasn't written as well as the others, but it's still such a great book! There is so little to dislike, but one could dislike the ending! Urgh! Pulling my hair out as a cliffhanger ends the book. I need more and I need it now! *stomping my feet*
This is an author that deserves to be a superstar based solely on this one series, she is that good! This series has been my favorite this year. I absolutely love the whole series.
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟🌟 Please read this series, you will never regret it!
*Thank you to bookfunnel for a free advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!*
Honestly when I thought I couldn’t get more obsessed with this series, then Angelina really pulls it out of the bag with book #5!
Gandrett is setting out on her mission to save her prince Nehelon (I’m actually in love with these two characters!), with her trusty Fae friend Gordon. We learn more about her magic, about Fae history and the upcoming war, while Nehelon suffers as captive at the hands of his horrid mother in the Lost Towers.
Then we follow Mackenzie and her blossoming romance with Prince Taghi (I also may or may not be in love with these two as well…). We see less of Brax as he struggles with the responsibilities of preparing for the upcoming war. Addie and Armand are both suffering under the Dragon King’s rule at Eedwood and finally, Kepha and Drew who live with the King of Ulfray.
I especially loved reading about Drew as he’s a character we haven’t seen much of in the previous books and he’s got so much to give!
The pacing is really strong, keeping us on our toes as we navigate this high fantasy world. I was pretty much addicted to this book, obsessed over when Nehelon and Gandrett would be united and whether Mackenzie would confess her feelings.
Gandrett Brayton has more troubles than anyone, but all she can think about is freeing the male she loves. Nehelon is imprisoned by Liri, and all he wants is to get back to Gandrett and Gordan. Mckenzie is still trying to find her place in Phornes, and the more time she spends there, the more it begins to feel like home. Drew is a guest in the land of the Fae, but he must always be looking over his shoulder. Armand is a prisoner of the Dragon King, and Addie is just trying to stay sane.
Oh. My. Gosh. This fifth installment of the Shattered Kingdom series is everything I could’ve hoped for and more. There was so much action, and the perfect combination of romance and angst. I loved how everything played out, and as for that cliffhanger of an ending, I just want to scream into the abyss. Steffort truly has a gift, as she has the ability to immediately draw me into this world she’s created and make me never want to leave it. I would definitely recommend the Shattered Kingdom series to anyone who loves fantasy!
My review for this one is almost identical to that of Lost Towers.
McKenzies chapters are still my favorite. Her relationship with Taghi is everything. My heart is still entirely broken for Addie. But there is hope! I will not let go of that hope!
I will say, I dragged a bit on Gandrett and Nehelon's chapters in my last review, and I'll take it back and eat those words (a little bit). I enjoyed their chapters in this one, and even (dare I say) wanted more.
I love how interconnected everyones stories are, and the way they come together, or are coming together, or are creating the connections to come together. I really enjoy guessing how and when everyone's paths are going to cross.
This word is everything, and these characters are amazing. Everyone is so well developed and while occasionally I find myself more drawn to one character than the others, I really could not imagine this book without any of them, they each add so much to the story. Ugh! I can't get enough. I'm so excited to move on to book 6.
The painfully slow pace is taking its toll on my ability to enjoy the series. The more I read, the more I find myself continuing not because I'm enjoying myself, but because I just want to get it over with and find out how things end.
The idea that there are still two books left in this series is just wild to me. After 5 books I expected more progress: more storylines to be flushed out, relationships to be more developed, more battles and conflict to take place. But there has been minimal amounts of each of these, not nearly enough to keep me interested in the story.
Here are some general observations in no particular order:
- Mackenzie is insufferable: I can't stand her POV. - Baz's POV serves no purpose other than to remind us how hopeless Sives' situation is. - Addie is the real MVP of the series and I will die on that hill. - Gandrett and Nehelon's relationship is too drawn out and full of too much angst. - Drew is adorable. - Valyn gives off bad vibes. - Gordon is my favorite character.
Hopefully, the final two installments will be better.
The quest continues with Gandrett. After she saved the Fae from an ancient curse, now she must save her friends.
The story continues to get better as the characters come back for another adventure. Gandrett has evolved over the course of these books, and you can see a huge change in her character from book one to now.
The author has created a memorable series that stays with you after you've read them. We're five books in, and after starting the fifth, you can remember the previous books and interconnect everything. The author's ability to build a unique and intriguing world is uncanny and I can't wait to see where we go from here!
The author provided a copy. This is my honest review.
Love the main character, Gandrett! Throughout the series, she’s never been someone to sit around for the male characters to save and simply play the part of a damsel in distress. She is strong, and capable of not being washed out by a love interest (or two or three). I love that she is capable of having love interests without being overshadowed by the relationship dynamics; it’s a part of her, not all of her, and that’s what I really enjoy in this series.
The world building and magic is also utterly beautiful- with believable politics, terrifying enemies, and enjoyable surprises every step of the way. If you’re looking for a fantasy book full of overcoming the odds and with a dusting of romance… this is for you.
So this is the fifth book in the Shattered Kingdom series so I’m going to keep this short but I loved this book, I will say I do think it’s my least favourite in the series but I’m saying that we definitely are setting up the end of the series which I’m super sad about.
I throughly love these characters and the settings in the book so that makes up for it not being the strongest book in the series. These characters are ones that I love, especially Gandrett and Nehelon like I would die for them and love them so much. I do also love all the other characters but those two are my fav.
I am very excited to see where the next book will go because of where this book ended.
Ok here we are with book number 5 and you think this is where most series start to dwindle. That there is no way a series of this length can get any better. But the writing style that Angelina has and this world that she created that is truly so magical and special that you can't help but love it! This series continues to get better and better and as you read this story you are instantly immersed into not only this world but these emotions and events. Wow! Utterly speechless.
I was so impressed with the first book in this series, but it’s all become a bit of a chore to read. Everything could have been wrapped up nice and tidy in 4-5 books. I am also having a real issue with the character development - instead of slowly changing their actions or viewpoints, they’re just all suddenly changing and we’re supposed to just accept that and move on. Gandrett is becoming a bit of a Mary Sue - she was so much more dynamic in the first book. It feels like the author is stretching herself thin with all these characters and so we’ve lost what made the first book so promising.
I have read every book in the Shattered Kingdom series and every single book has exceeded my expectations! Book Five was absolutely amazing from start to finish and I could not put it down. Angelina J. Steffort is a master at putting pen to paper and creating a narrative with multiple points of view that does not disappoint. I highly highly recommend this entire series.
I will be (patiently) awaiting Book Six and all of the surprises that come next for Nehelon and Garrett.
Another fantastic book in the series. I honestly can’t stop talking to everyone about this book series. It’s a book that once you put down you really can not stop. The characters in the story are so well written that you feel their love, anger and sadness. I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
Holy smokes! I am in awe and love with this book. Seeing gandrett grown and learn about her magic and nehelon........ I cant wait to see how things go with the dragon king too. These books will transport you into their worlds.
