Alfie Deyes is an English Youtuber with 3 channels: PointlessBlog, PointlessBlogVlogs and PointlessBlogGames. Deyes has collaborated with a myriad of other Youtubers and has about 3 million subscribers as of September 2014. When Deyes was little, he wanted to grow up and pick up dog poo in parks, but has grown up to be an internet addict. He is terrible at getting out of bed in the morning and a fan of One Direction.
'The Pointless Book, started by Keri Smith Alfie Deyes, finished by you'
Without a doubt this book is a pointless rip-off the Wreck this Journal series, I have no idea how Alfie even got away with publishing it if I am brutally honest. It's disappointing that there are so many young adults who are brilliant writers but simply don't have the resources or the support to get their work published, yet rubbish like this can be published just because of the popularity of a YouTube vlogger. I think the fact that he offered his Twitter followers DM's in exchange for a 5 star rating on Amazon clearly illustrates how awful his book really is. No real work, effort or creativity went into this book, it's nothing but a waste of paper.
Mmm...a bit like the Wreck This Journals. This is gonna sound harsh, but YouTubers really have to start realizing that, just because they can copy video ideas, they can't copy everything. I'm quite traditional, I want characters, a setting and a plot. Or, y'know, at the very least, more than five words on a page at once. Not what I paid for, and not something I'll pay for again.
Those who know me will know I love YouTubers. I watch their videos every night before I go to bed and they're so entertaining - some even have upwards of a few million subscribers! My favourites are Zoella, Jim Chapman, Marcus Butler, and Alfie Deyes (PointlessBlog) to name a few. Well today, a very special book arrived (so special, in fact, that I'm writing the review and publishing the review the same day I got the book - I never do that!)
What book? The Pointless Book by none other than one of my favourite YouTubers himself, Alfie Deyes. But don't be fooled by the title - it's not so pointless! Full of random things to do from origami and passing the book to a stranger and having them draw you, to making paper aeroplanes and baking a cake in a mug, boredom won't even exist anymore with this book around. Just flip to a random page (don't do it in order) and you're good to go!
I'll admit I wasn't hugely excited about the book when it was first announced, but by the end of Alfie's video where he revealed the book I was fangirling so hard. I personally love books like this. Having filled my copy of Wreck This Journal, a similar book, I was in need of something else... and then this book was revealed. Good timing. I'd say this is more fun and definitely more random; I think the 'Draw genitals on the people below' page proves that. But my favourite page - yet to be completed - is 'Places I'd like to travel to' which for me is pretty much everywhere.
This is just a knocked up version of 'wreck this journal' etc The tasks in this book are not creative at all and is boring. 'Wreck this journal' is so much better and is way more fun!
This book is basically a rip off of Wreck This Journal and many other journal like books already in stores. We don't need another one. I only skimmed this book in the store to see that it lacks originality and really is pointless. It's just a replica of all the other activity books and I'm surprised it actually got published. It's a shame to see a book like this get so much praise and recognition when there are many fantastic authors that write and create their own stories who don't get noticed. If Aflie really wanted to make extra money he should have at least tried to be creative.
This is the perfect example of when YouTubers get tired of constantly stealing video ideas, so instead, they steal book ideas...*cough*Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith*cough*
Real rating: 0 I was hoping for more than 5 words on every other page, and activites that had more worth than a coloring book. But, I guess not. This book is exactly what it says, pointless. My 6 year old cousin could've come up with better ideas than this.
I know this is technically not a book, but oh well. Now, I really like Alfie Deyes, he's hilarious and cute. But the Pointless Book is basically a rip-off Wreck This Journal, but worse. It's not original and in my opinion most of the things to do aren't all that fun, which is why it is now my sister's. Recommended to people who like rip-offs.
The Pointless Book started by Alfie Deyes finished by you. Love this pointless book. It really is pointless. There is so much to do in this pointless book and I love the app that goes along with it. I must admit it is like Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith and there are a few pages that are the same. But that doesn’t bother me because I like how random and creative the other pages are. 5 stars for The Pointless Book!
YouTubers need to stop writing books - this is an boring and unoriginal version of Wreck this Journal, it's meant to be 'pointless' but it's just plain boring and not worth completing. I highly doubt he even wrote the pages and if he wasn't a YouTuber, this would never be published.
Okay.. I honestly don't know how to review this since... it's not a book. Its not a story, a collection of stories, poetry, or really.. anything? It lives up to it's name: Pointless. Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Alfie Deyes (sorta.. I watch him every once in a while) and to be honest I much prefer when youtubers who do not write create activity books instead of well... "write" novels. If I were a bigger fan of activity books I'm sure I would've really enjoyed or if I was an artist I could understand enjoying it as quick practice. I love coloring books though, so I thought there was some potential. Overall, it's not a bad activity book, could be a great coffee table book but not my cup of tea.
"The Pointless Book" is an addition to the Youtube channel of vlogger, Alfie Deyes. This is an activity book for adults, fully illustrated and packed with a host of games, activities and pranks. Alfie invites you to join his online following as he challenges you to complete your journal of pointlessness and do virtually nothing with pride. "The Pointless Book" is accompanied by a free downloadable app.
Who's the author?
Alfie Deyes is an English Youtuber with 3 channels: PointlessBlog, PointlessBlogTV and AlfieGames. Deyes has collaborated with a myriad of other Youtubers and has about 3 million subscribers, as of September 2014. "The Pointless Book" is Alfie's first book to accompany his Youtube channel. His second, "The Pointless Book #2" is due out in April 2015 and is a continuation of the first book, with more games, activities, pranks and challenges.
Was it any good?
I'm not a fan. I think that is because I prefer to read my books than draw on them, rip pages out of them, paint on them and so on. I like to preserve my books, and keep them in good condition. Nonetheless, I did try to engage with this book; to do the challenges, activities and games. Some of them I found to be downright stupid, and didn't even attempt, others were amusing and killed a quiet five minutes; a game of noughts-and-crosses, for example. Although I didn't completely dislike this book, it didn't really appeal to me either, but I can see it's appeal to others.
Would I recommend it?
Yes, I would, if you're looking for an activity book, not a reading book. And if you're a fan of Alfie Deyes, this is the perfect accompaniment to his Youtube channel.
I bought this book and the second one to use as a distraction for when my mind has bad/unsafe thoughts. I wasn't sure if they would help or not, but it mentions doing random and weird stuff, which suits me!
I've used the book once so far and it was an amazing distraction and help! I had so much fun, I had to make myself put it down after a while, to save some pages for when I'll no doubt need a distraction again.
The activites were so much fun, totally silly, but that's exactly what made them so fun and enjoyable. It's not too often adults will allow themselves time to just "mess about" but it's nice when we do!
I know I have the books there for a while now for when needed. I'm so glad I went ahead and bought them. I also now know not to ever expect a career for myself in oragami. It was still fun though, maybe more funny laughing at hopeless attempt. But at least I tried!
Anyone who knows me, knows I love Youtube. So when I heard UK Youtuber Alfie Deyes had a book out I knew I had to get it to show my support for him and all his work.
The Pointless Book is that, pointless, it is full of random activites, including my life ambitions where you write what you want to do in life to making a paper airplane to turning the page using your ear. They are all fun activities you can do with your friends. I did some of the activites with my sister and we both found them funny and entertaining.
If you are looking for a silly, fun book that doesnt take itself seriously pick up a copy of The Pointless Book, as Alfies tag line says, Started by Alfie Deyes finished by you!
I personally think it's fun. People compare it to Wreck This Journal but I really think that it's unique. The title is basically what it is. A POINTLESS book but we love doing pointless things don't we? When I'm bored I always look for my Pointless Book and that's exactly why it's there. The idea is so fun and Alfie has made every single page creative. Love you Alfie <3
It was just childish (e.g. "Use this page when in desperate need of toilet paper" or "head ping-Pong, look left - look right"), and yes, it was a totally pointless book :)
But even though this journal wasnt My cup of Tea, im sure the Child version of me would've loved it!
It's exactly what it says on the cover: a pointless book.
A weird mix between wreck this journal and the wimpy kid series do it yourself book, with not even a slither of creativity. A blatant attempt by gleam management to get even more money out of Alfie's fans.
The Pointless Book is an interactive book where you are encouraged to write, draw, cut out pages, play games, and do various other activities. Some of the activities do seem nice like there are writing activities to write things you like about yourself and your life ambitions or draw what you would like to be when you are older as well as a reminder to drink water. However, there are some immature activities such as seeing how many crackers you can get in your mouth, taking a bite out of the page, and making a cocktail with suggested ingredients of ketchup and mustard. There are also pointless pages which are blank pages where you are encouraged to do whatever you want, which are in fact pointless. Furthermore, The Pointless Book is a little similar to Wreck This Journal, but The Pointless Book seems geared toward younger kids and there are no activities to wreck the book.
i consider me finishing this book as i completed (somewhat) all the pages of activities... with that being said, 13 DOLLARS FOR A BOOK WHERE THERE'S MULTIPLE PAGES WHERE THEY JUST SAY "YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT WITH THIS PAGE!" IS SUCCESSFUL MARKETING TO STUPID TWEENS WHO WERE OBSESSED WITH THE BRITISH VLOG SQUAD AT ITS FINEST. i was one of those tweens who wished i could afford this book back in 2014 lmao and as an adult, i am so glad i did not save up my pocket money to buy this book bcs it truly does live up to the title of this book. truly pointless!
