Fantasy author with an M.A. in Folklore, who loves to take pictures, eat french fries, and live my life as an all-around creative forest nymph! I'm so excited to bring you with me on my journey as I step out of our everyday lives and into the new fantasy world within The Night and Its Moon fantasy series!
I wrote these books for an audience of one, and that audience was me. I wanted to see bi representation, love, mental health struggles, religious trauma, and overcoming the of obstacles that I needed to be modeled in my own life. At the end of the day I'm so proud of myself for creating the series that I'd always hoped I could read, and I hope someone is able to connect with them in a way that I have.
I'm so proud of this novella. It was a love story that broke my heart, but the one I needed to tell. I think it's important for creators to be proud of their work, and want to give it five stars because I believe in it as a piece of art.
While it can be read it as a stand-alone piece (and most of the terminology should be discernible from context), it is meant to be read following Book One of the TNAIM series as a world-building backstory. I hope it means as much to you as it does to me. <3
Honestly, I felt this novella did not need to be written. All it did was strengthen my resolve that Piper plagiarized The Witcher and that her prose is some of the most melodramatic, pretentious writing I have ever read. It is very clear that Piper thinks incredibly highly of her own skills, and while good for her, she really needs to listen to the people who are critiquing her and not get so defensive right off the jump. I've said before that she does have the potential to write, but it's clear that her head has grown so big with all her TikTok fans telling her how amazing she is that she doesn't think she has to change or grow at all.
This novella centers on Odrin(a name taken from The Witcher 2 game). Odrin begins as your typical man in love with a girl. They get attacked by a monster, a not Witcher rescues them, and Odrin realizes just how weak and pathetic he truly is. He can't even defend the woman he loves! So what does he do? He bails on everyone. Literally just abandons his family, the love of his life and his town so he can go learn how to fight monsters because his ego can't handle being so useless. He's gone for ten years. Now, here's the thing. Amaris was at the Reev for three years before she took her oaths and was already out running missions. What was Odrin doing for those ten years? Why did it take him so long to decide to come back home? A lot can happen in ten years. As shown by the fact that he comes home to a dead father and a mother with dementia. Also, if you have to take an oath to become a Reever, how is it that Odrin was able to take a wife and have a child? While the oaths don't necessarily specify that he's unable to do that, why else would he need to take an oath? What kind of oath allows you to shirk your duties, build a family and go live in a little cabin somewhere? Shouldn't he be exploring the continent killing monsters and, idk, doing what he swore an oath to do? He only goes out when he's sent or when he has to. What was the point of taking an oath to be a Reever if he just wanted to be a husband?
In a bout of extreme predictability, Odrin kills a monster, says 'fuck' like classic Geralt [image error] then like an absolute idiot, waits for the owner of said monster to look him in the face so he wouldn't hurt the children there and then is shocked when that man comes and murders his family. This whole novella was basically an excuse to write about man pain that was a result of his own doing. If this was supposed to make me feel sorry for Odrin or like him at all, it failed. Effie deserved better than to sit around taking care of his mom and playing housewife waiting for him to come back to her only to get murdered because his ego was so fragile he had to become a monster hunter.

This is a story that continues to sit with me days after reading it. The descriptions are gorgeous and sensitive and deliberate and the pacing is patient - slower than her other work but beautiful for this piece because we know, from the start, that this will end in tragedy (you should DEFINITELY read The Night & Its Moon before picking up this novelette). And there is great weight that makes everything heavy with importance. It's a short story but with heart that makes it feel much longer. A perfect addition to TNAIM series.
Dit is een super zielig boek maar wel erg mooi. Andere novelles van deze serie vond ik soms een beetje saai omdat ze veel op de emotionele aspecten focuste maar dat ergerde me hier niet.
The story is not only beautifully written but absolutely soul-aching. The way the author describes the places, characters and their feelings envelopes you completely and takes you out of wherever you are just to place you in the middle of this world. I can’t think of a better word than “artful” to describe this story.
I am literally so biased I will never be able to write a bad review for Piper. But this book gave Odrin some really beautiful background into why he is the way he is. Basically when I finish this book I was traumatized.
Beautifully crafted with environments you can picture and emotions you can feel. This read is beautiful and breaking. If you loved the night and & its moon you are most definitely going to love getting Odrin's story.
I love a wee novella in a book series, some of my favourite character development happens in these and this short heartbreaking insight to Odrin is right up there.
Just found out about these novellas yesterday ya heard. Odrin didn't really get his time to shine in the books but his character's importance was in the paternal role he played for Amaris. Getting to read about him and his lost family was actually heartbreaking. Last line hit us with: "I was supposed to be your guardian angel,' he said with a choked voice, touching the iron and closing his eyes. 'Now you'll have to be mine." Nah man I'm not built for that kind of shit.
Piper CJ has quickly become one of my all-time favorite writers! Her stories are a blend of action and adventure, rich in-depth characters, romance with some spiciness, and the type of fantasy I enjoy reading. If you haven't picked up one of her books, you should. You will not be disappointed.
Absolutely tore my heart. Read directly after finishing The Night and It's Moon. Piper truly has a way with words that reaches right into me and touches the deepest parts of my soul. A fantastic, if tragic, tale.

Somehow interesting to read, adding slightly more depth to odrons character in the night and it's moon. Just not sure if these roughly 40 pages should even be considered a book (and.. Sold as that). Underwhelming!
Odrin seemed like a simple man with strong conviction but to learn about his past and sorrows was interesting. It opens up a whole new way of seeing the man. This is short but I loved it
This was okay but at 51 pages including a chapter from another book there’s only so much there and it wasn’t enough to make me run to get the book and jump in.
This short story is really quite beautiful, and Piper has outdone herself again. Filling in a part of Orrin’s backstory makes his relationship with Amaris make so much more sense! And it makes their companionship that much sweeter. 🤍 definitely read with a box of tissues.
