Bound by Fate #1

Prince of the Dark Fae

Rate this book
Girls like me don't get fairy tale endings.

My sister and I might be popular seamstresses for the fae, but that doesn't make life easy. Nothing about serving the fae is easy. Or safe.

Still, I thought I could have one nice thing. The pendant I found when I was young is my good luck charm and my secret. Until I forget to hide it at a ball and instead of bringing me luck it lands me in hot water.

The King and Queen of the Light fae tell me it's stolen and that I have to return it. Only when I try it won't come off. The fae don't grant second chances. What they call me next makes my blood run cold.

Witch.

I'm not a witch. I'm a seamstress, a human, a nobody. Now I'm banished from the land of the light fae, leaving only one place to go.

The Dark Fae’s Kingdom.

Suddenly I find myself claimed by the dark fae prince. He's as handsome as he is deadly and I should be running from him. Only he and his kingdom awaken a side of me I never knew existed. I hunger for him, but every time he looks at me I can't be certain if it's me or the pendant he wants.

This is the land of the dark fae, where every offer comes with a catch. Where trickery and cruelty are supposed to be celebrated. The grander the offer, the more wary you should be of the cost.

The prince wants me to be his queen.

But what will saying yes cost me?

STORY:
WHAT I LIKED:
This was a likable story. The premise of the story built around the pendant was interesting and even I found it’s powers remarkable as time goes on when it’s around Isla’s neck. The whole fae and magic aspect pulls you in as well. Thane, a fae was the prince of the dark fae people and soon to be king. His thirst for power (not in a cruel way) is the driving force of getting the pendant Isla has. Isla is human and hasn’t had the best life with her sister as she resides with the light fae. She is likable and a lovable character throughout the book.

WHAT WAS SO SO:
So as much as I liked the story, I did not like the pace of Thane and Isla’s romance. It didn’t feel strong enough as the story progressed. There were hints of their chemistry but it took too long to develop. By 70% we got a hint of more. This was the downside for me.

SEXUAL CHEMISTRY
Their scenes were ok. I needed a strong build up and then fire works.

SECONDARY CHARACTERS:
I liked Blyth, Thane’s right hand. I also like Lily, Isla’s sister and Valerie.

OVERALL:
Was I entertained? Sometimes. Did I like the story? Yes, I love the plot. Would I read the other books in the series? N/A

TRIGGERS:

****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.

This might be my favourite book by this author, I definitely didn't want to put it down once I'd started it.
Isla lives with her sister Lily, they are humans in a world where humans are seen as lowly as animals by the Fae. They live in the realm of the Light Fae, "the good Fae" and are brought up to fear the Dark Fae. Lily and Isla lead good lives for humans as they're talented seamstresses but that doesn't mean life is easy or kind, they live in fear of the Light Fae. Isla is found to have a magical pendant and instructed to remove it, she can't as it's bonded with her. They accuse her of being a witch and want to execute her but they fear the pendant protecting her will kill them, they decide to banish her knowing she will be dead soon. Prince Thane of the Dark Fae wants the pendant and claims Isla as a subject of the Dark realm and takes Isla back to his kingdom as his bride to be. Isla is terrified after all the barbaric things she's heard but soon discovers maybe Dark Fae are the good Fae after all and Thane doesn't deserve his reputation. I won't give away any of the story once it really starts in the Dark realm, I really recommend you read it.
The story is very well written, the characters are so well developed and you really do love and hate certain characters. The story keeps moving at a good pace, I didn't find myself getting fed up with any of it. If you like Fae or fantasy in general I would recommend this book. I've just seen it's 1 of 2, I'm looking forward to the next book.

well… that’s quite sad

I’m so sad because this book had such a potential but did not do well for fulfilling any expectations. The MMC was not likable really. I understood his reasons but I was not happy with the constant relapse. FMC was better. She single-handedly carried the whole book. In a romance book, I expect to see the relationship develop and nurture, here we have “they had sex for seven days” and boom done. The relationship is much better now. Did Lindsey Devin include male authors because some of this romance plot seems so traditionally-written-by-a-male style.

Anyhow, I am left with seeking more romance after this one because I refuse to believe this is a romance book.

Loved the idea, execution fell flat. I didn’t buy into the relationship at all and had the most convenient and unrealistic conclusion that it really killed the enjoyment.

~Spoilers~

This book follows the life of Isla, a common human seamstress. Right in the beginning of the book we found that when she was 12 she found a necklace in a fountain in the royal gardens. Believing it was fate for her to find it she put the necklace on and hasnt taken it off since. Due to the necklace being a magical relic it bonded with her, resulting in Isla not being able to take it off. Noticing the necklace at the ball the queen accused Isla of being a witch. As a result, the king banished her from their lands, only to have the dark fae prince swoop in and claim her for himself. Throughout this book we see Isla grow from the once weak non-magical human, into a strong powerful queen, who had magic all along. It was obvious she would make the perfect queen, she was clever, compassionate, fierce in wanting to help people and doing the right thing, even if it made her appear selfish.

Before Thane was introduced we were made to believe that he would be brutal and cruel, favouring torture and hedonism because that was what the rumours were regarding Ragalith. However, once introduced we got to know that Thane wasn’t anything like what he was stereotyped to be. We find the he cares about his people and would do anything to keep them safe. Which is why he had been searching for the necklace Isla had, so he can enhance his powers. Doing so would allow him to persuade everyone in his kingdom to believe that hiding behind a wall would be better than sticking to the ‘accords’. When he finds that he cant get the necklace off of Isla, he’s advised to do the next best thing, marry her. In doing so would allow the necklace to slowly accept him and form a bond due to their marriage. I liked reading how his character very slowly grew into a better version of himself. He annoyed me sometimes with his stubbornness and refusal to admit his feelings. Although he did make me swoon when he surprised Isla with inviting and bringing Lily and her husband to their wedding. That was just so sweet of him that i physically sighed.

Overall, this book was okay i would give it 3.5 stars, the romance wasn’t there much until the end of the book. There was a lot of character growth, from both the main two characters and Xavier. I liked how they managed to find the cause of the problem and deal with it without needing violence.

I don't understand the motive to go to the ball knowing how cruel the fae can be and then deciding to wear a gown that they all admit is way better than any of the other gowns they've made. How did they think that was going to go? Her sister mentioned the FMC finding a husband but honestly there had to be far less dangerous ways to go about that then gaining the attention and ire of the entire fae court. Seemed like a really stupid and thoughtless thing to do. The FMC also hid the necklace for years, knowing no one could know she has it but then decided to randomly show it off at the ball? Why? What is the motive here?

The MMC is not completely unlikable but he really doesn't do anything to endear himself to either the reader nor the FMC. He continues to treat her badly and she just accepts it. He apologized one time but he repeatedly treats her poorly and I don't understand why she keeps believing him. In an enemies-to-lover story the development between the love interest is very important, but any sort of real development seems to happen off screen/off book. It's suddenly a week later and she's like, "We spent so much time together, he was lovely" but last chapter he was demanding things from her, getting angry and storming off then not talking to her so we didn't see any positive progression.

Fluff Fae Read

There isn't anything really WOW about this book, but it was a quick, satisfying read none the less.

There were some spelling errors, plot holes, and the ending seemed fairly rushed and anticlimactic. The main characters grow quite a bit however it seemed more like a switch was hit and insta-change happened versus real development.

The banter between the main characters is great and the side character of Blyth needs his own book for sure. I adored him. While this isn't one that will go on my favorites list, I will go on to try out more books by this Author for sure.

There is an entire second book after the first one. It’s not in the description of the first novel, there is no hint that this is actually two novels. The second one is about Shapeshifting wolves and a mate bond.

Both novels are good in their own right, but it was really irritating to be tossed into an entirely second book without warning. I kept looking for some sort of connection between the two, but there isn’t. It’s not the same world, it’s not the same characters, there’s literally nothing connecting the two of them.

average. had potential but fell short.

It had potential but i feel like the ending was rushed. Like the story needed to be finished and the author started sweeping things under the rug. I was excited that the beginning of the book built up the characters. But It wasn’t continued throughout the story. There was “character growth” but not explained. It’s just grazed over like we’re supposed to know.

Sweet Cinderella retelling

This is a very sweet little Cinderella retelling, that's a nice easy read. Not smutty. No X rated stuff. Easy going characters and nice simple rolling story.

Boring

Boring, boring, and more boring. That’s about all there is to say about this book. To be fair, the beginning of the story had potential but it lost it by the 25% mark.

Isla is just a human seamstress who works along side her sister, Lily. She’s never had anything that was just hers, well, except a pendent that she found in a water fountain when she was younger after her parents passed. Being a human in Silvermoore isn’t easy. They’re looked down on and punished for things that had happened decades before Isla’s time. At a ball where Isla wasn’t technically supposed to go to, she catches the eye of two Fae very different princes, light and dark Fae. The Ragalith prince wants Isla just for the necklace that’s around her neck. How will he get it? What will happen if the dark Ragalith prince gets his hands on the pendent?

Overall, I found this an enjoyable story. I am a bit disappointed because this had so much potential and it kind of fell flat near the end. This story is in duel POV between Isla and Thane and I’m back and forth about how I feel about it. On one end, I liked it, it was nice to see Thane’s side of things, but at the same time, I almost feel like it takes away from the story. It takes from guessing if Thane is actually good for his word or not. I feel like it just takes way from the overall suspense. I also felt like Isla’s growth was sudden and it definitely threw me off. She’s nearly a different character at the end of this story. She did change into a stronger person, but I just wish it was more gradual or even earned through experience.

This was an easy and fun read. There is a second book that’s tied in the first, but I’m not going to read it. I’d definitely read from this author again, but I’m not interested in who the new characters are in the second story.

This is so beautifully written. The descriptions of the places and people, the palaces and village are so tangible you can feel as though you are seeing them for yourself. I loved this. Isla has always been a bit different and she's not quite sure why. She has not had an easy life but she has worked hard and it is not for want of trying. She once found a necklace in a fountain when she was young, not long after the death of her mother. She knows she should have handed it over at some point but somehow she felt that it was for her, that it came to her as some form of recompense for the harsh life she lived. She's trying to be the dutiful sister after they also lost her father so she goes to the ball as her sister wishes. She just wants to hide into the background yet when she walks in it is a Cinderella moment with not one but two princes pretty much falling for her. Thane is still kicking himself for a mistake that he made years ago. He lost a relic of power and has been trying to find it ever since. He doesn't want to go to a silly ball held by the Light Fae but his father insists so here he is and suddenly here to is a vision, an angel almost and she's wearing his relic! He pretends that he wasn't truly held in her thrall, after all she's just a human but he still needs that relic. Surely there has to be a way to get it? What will he sacrifice to get it and what will Isla have to sacrifice in giving it up?

this could’ve been amazing

THIS WAS SO AMAZING. But the near ending was rushed along, the story lost its pace, and it dealt a mighty blow to the rating.

I liked the writing. Devin can seriously write some steamy stuff with little effort. Seriously. But the story!

I LOVE the idea. I love the story and what transpired. I think the pace was off, that the beginning and the time spent in the other kingdom didn’t match the snowball ending. I think a lot of things were rushed, and that’s a major bummer because this story seemed so absolutely POWERFUL when I read it. I could totally see this on a shelf.

This author is becoming a favorite of mine with their ideas and writing. Some pacing issues but overall I just enjoyed myself. I love the problems I could relate to, wanting something but not being able to trust it because of “otherworldly” butting ins. Mean people. Isla handled herself like a boss and I appreciate that a lot.

Again, it’s just the pacing that’s off. Thane solved his issues way too fast without legwork. Isla… well I personally had issues sometimes with the way she was prejudiced against the other side but it all turned out well enough.

Overall a recommend if you don’t mind the rush.

I will forever be a Kyon Ensin girl. I love the whole ↓

“You tortured some?”...

“I broke them for you, Kricket,” he whispers like it’s a secret.

Trey Allairis? Ew, haha. That is why I couldn't get on board with the hero of this book. I personally don't like heroes that are willing to use or sacrifice the heroine for the good of everyone else, even if the decision is conflicting for him. I LOVE a hero/anti-hero that will do ANYTHING to get the heroine and keep her safe. Toxic? Sure. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Time and time again, the hero chipped away at the genuineness of his and the heroine's relationship with his need for the power the heroine held, so that he could save his kingdom. One of the main points of the book was the hero getting close (manipulating her emotions, whatever) to the heroine to get her necklace that held her powers. Unsurprisingly, the heroine "selflessly" sacrificed herself in the end and took the decision away from the hero, but the damage was already done for me.

The first thing I'm going to say is this. The ending was crap, like crap, crap, crap. Am I the only one who sees it that way? or was what I read different from others because I just couldn't endure the torture? I almost put it down at a point, but I didn't because I was almost done and I didn't want to waste all the time I had already spent on the book.

The novel got off to a good start. The novel held a lot of promise. The plot was excellent, and the character development and different points of view were interesting. Sincerely, I feel cheated. The book, in my opinion, deserved better. The ending felt rushed and didn't give any satisfaction. The events happened so fast that I almost couldn't keep up.

The relationship between Thane and Isla needed more. More what? I'm not quite sure, but it needed more. It's my type of book, fantasy romance, so that counts for something, and before the last few chapters, I really liked the book. The relationship between Isla and the pendant was strong, but I still wonder if it was the pendant that attracted them to each other. It was an okay read—the ending was a turn-off—but good nonetheless. An average read. 2.5

It was one of the best book i read. World building was good as well as romance. It kept me excited to find out what would happen even though i predicted to some extent. One of my pet peeves is that i hate when one of the mc’s keep secrets and not tell them when they had enough relationship development to trust each other but in this book for much of my satisfaction fl actually told him secret right after (Queen’s and king’s secret). Ending was why it lost fifth star from me. Everything was going well but ending seemed way too convenient and easy for as big of a problem as they had. There was frustrating things while they were getting to know each other but they acknowledged problem and apologised so i guess it’s okay. All in one, it was one of the top books in fantasy genre. It was worth reading and im surprised that it doesn’t have lot more attention than now.

Isla finds a golden locket when she was ten years old that bonded with her and protects her from fae magic. Thane, a dark fae prince, had dropped the locket and comes looking for it thirteen years later. When the Silvermoore king and queen realize that she has it she is banished from their court. Prince Thane instantly claims ownership of her and the protection of his kingdom Raglith. He wants the locket back so that he have repair his kingdom and he has to wed Isla if he wants to become king. The story is full of intrique, magic, adventure and lots of emotions between Isla and Thane that has to do with what he wants the locket for. They both struggle with what is right for the kingdom.

I really enjoyed Prince of the Dark Fae, it’s a Fantasy filled with the machinations of Light and Dark Fae steeped in a world of magic that is ensconced within an imaginative and perfectly paced story.
Well written with an engaging storyline of humans forbidden to use magic while kept subservient to their Fae masters it is both stirring and intense. Born into this world human Isla will one day soon become the catalyst for bringing about great change within the Fae realm while finding unexpected love with a Dark Fae. Atmospheric with intricate world building and many twists and turns I found this narrative to be a very engaging and immersive read.

1st reading:
I'm 50% done with Prince Of The Dark Fae: Book 1: *Very* loose retelling of Cinderella. Interesting plot, somewhat decently drawn characters, some attempt at world building for magic. There were some holes, however, with how the pendant worked and what precisely was wrong with the land that needed to be fixed.
Book 2: *Very* loose retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. I didn't find this story as compelling as the first one and had to struggle to stay engaged. Decently written, so I'm not sure why I wasn't as interested. A little nitpick - at the very beginning of the story, the eastern portion of the empire is described as mountainous, while the west is agricultural. Less than 5 pages later, it's the opposite. Is anyone editing these books?

I enjoyed this book in the beginning, but it felt like the author got uninspired and bored writing it. For awhile it seemed to pull from Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast tropes. Then other more recent popular fantasies felt sprinkled in. We go from slow burn straight to "I was wrong I love you". The romance gave me whiplash. Then the "battle"? What an anticlimactic book. Several times around 60% I wanted to stop and sort of wish I would have. So so much missed opportunity. The villans were watered down and I found our heros selfishness to be the focused evil. Probably won't continue with this aurhor.

I don't know how to feel about this book. It interested me and had a lot of potential, Cinderella retellings vibes, etc...

If I'm honest, though it felt like a rough first draft for a story. Not that the story wasn't still enjoyable, but there were a lot of inconsistencies and things about the plot that just made me scratch my head.

Also, very confusing steam level. He's supposed to be a playboy, drops f*** with no issue at the beginning, talks about how open his kingdom is with sexuality and then after they're married it's fade to black and he's like... "I've lain with my wife." Like an ancient king possessed him.

Idk I was confused! Still good, just could be improved 🤷‍♀️😅

Two books?

Hello! I finally finished this one. To be honest this book has 2 stories both are delightful and have nothing to do with each other except the main characters are bound by fate. After the first book/ story i thought there was an epilogue or a snippet of the continuation of that story to get all butt hurt when I realized it was neither but a different story all together. Dark Fae in the first and Wolves in the next. I had to take a break from it. I was not prepared to take on that change in plot and characters. I did come back and it is worth the read. Just be prepared for both I suppose. I hope this doesn't ruin it for anyone. Just enjoy them both!

There's 2 different books in here

So there's 2 different books in here and from what I can tell they aren't really related. The first book is what the description is about, the second is about wolves. (I searched for the title of the second book and I believe its called kings of wolves for those of you who want to know). The first book isn't bad, but it does feel a bit long. It started out well and kept my attention, but it dragged towards the end. Even tho it felt long the ending felt rushed. Everything just kind of worked out and then that was it. Happily ever after. It's not a bad thing, but just kind of weird pacing.
