This best-selling title has become the introductory classic textbook for vedic students by world-renowned teacher Komilla Sutton. Simple and easy to follow, it teaches you how to convert a tropical chart to sidereal, then how to interpret it. Suitable for all levels of non or Western astrologers. After following 'The Essentials of Vedic Astrology' students will then be able to progress to the more advanced techniques taught in Komilla's later books.
This book is at times very intuitive, something that cannot be said of many astrology books. However, it badly needed a good editor. There are even a couple of sentences which do not make sense gramatically, or have missing words, as if nobody ever proofread it. Several statements are vague and too general to be of any use.
Since my astrology teacher highly respects Komilla, I believe she's a great astrologer but a poor writer. Some of my friends think this book is great, so you may actually like it more than I did.
"The Essentials of Vedic Astrology" is an excellent introduction to Vedic astrology. This informative book covers topics such as the signs of the Zodiac, houses, Nakshatras, Dashas, astrological Yogas, and basics of chart interpretation. I can highly recommend "The Essentials of Vedic Astrology" to those who wish to familiarise themselves with this ancient branch of knowledge. I really like Komilla's clear and concise writing style, it has been a sheer pleasure to deepen my understanding of Jyotish through her amazing book.
This is an excellent book for beginners who are getting started with Vedic astrology. The text is broken up into easy-to-follow chapters. Anyone who buys this book is quite likely to come back to it time and time again. Even if you've been practising Vedic astrology for a while, this book is an excellent resource to come back to the basics when need be.
The Essentials of Vedic Astrology by Komilla Sutton is a comprehensive guide that serves as an excellent introduction to the principles and practices of Vedic astrology. Renowned for her expertise, Sutton effectively bridges the gap between Western and Vedic astrology, making this book accessible to both beginners and those already familiar with Western astrological concepts.
Where this book shines is in its meticulous outline of the Journey of the Soul and the intricate workings of planets within the Vedic framework. Sutton elaborates on the significance of the twelve houses in astrology, each representing different facets of life. For instance, she explains that the first house pertains to self-identity, while the eighth house delves into deeper life experiences, including inheritance and personal transformation.
Sutton provides clear and concise descriptions of astrological concepts such as Nakshatras, Vimshottari Dasas, and Gochara transits. This depth allows readers to grasp not only the mechanics but also the spiritual dimensions of Vedic astrology. The text is organized in a way that gradually introduces complex ideas, making it suitable for all levels. Readers learn how to convert tropical charts to sidereal charts and interpret them effectively.
The author emphasizes the karmic aspects of astrology, discussing how earthly attachments can cloud spiritual understanding. This perspective encourages readers to contemplate their own spiritual journeys alongside astrological study. Komilla Sutton's The Essentials of Vedic Astrology stands out as an essential resource for anyone interested in exploring Vedic astrology. Its blend of practical instruction and spiritual wisdom makes it a valuable addition to both new learners and seasoned practitioners seeking to deepen their understanding of this ancient discipline.
I have built a pretty sizable library of Vedic astrology books in the last 10 years. I have Komilla's 4 other titles as well, which cover specific subjects in depth. I do admire several other authors, but her writing style suits me and I think this is a great book for people new to the study.
I gave it a five because that's a great book. It's well written and covers all the important points that a beginner need to learn. Ms. Sutton is clearly the best, her predictions about Princes William and Harry are spot on. This book inspires me to keep learning Vedic Astrology. I truly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning Vedic Astrology.
