The convention where true crime fans get to dress up like their favorite criminals, attend forensics seminars, and meet law enforcement legends.
Former cop Harry McGlade loves being a Guest of Honor.
Former cop Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels... not so much.
Jack hates being the center of attention. True crime groupies freak her out. And some of her police officer peers have serious envy issues.
But the surreal event goes from irritating to frightening when a storm traps everyone inside the conference hotel.
Then fans start getting gruesomely murdered, mimicking Jack's past serial killer cases.
Can two old ex-cops use their decades of experience to end the horror?
Or are Jack and Harry about to finally face a psychopath they can't stop?
JACK ROSE Murder has its conventions...
If you are a more sensitive (or adventurous) reader, this handy scale rates specific categories from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) to give you some idea if this is your kind of book.
JACK ROSE Bad Language - 6 Scary - 8 Violent - 9 Funny - 7 Sexy - 2 Crossovers - Features Jack Daniels, Phineas Troutt, Harry McGlade, and includes characters from the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, the Codename: Chandler series, and the Timecaster series. Can two old ex-cops use their decades of experience to end the horror?
Or are Jack and Harry about to finally face a psychopath they can't stop?
Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Shot of Tequila, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Dead On My Feet, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Shaken, Stirred (with Blake Crouch), Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, Chaser, Old Fashioned, Bite Force, and Witch Brew. More coming soon.
Wow, that's a lot of Jack.
If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.
Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.
He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.
With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.
And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.
Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.
Jack is back in this installment as Harry McGlade is the guest of honor at a serial killer convention where fans dress up as their favorite killers. Jack is with Harry at the convention but things go wonky when a storm blows through and everyone has no place to go or escape.
When murders starts happening is when things go south and it will be up to Jack and Harry to get down to the bottom of things!
That is about all I can hand out on a small backstory so if you want to know more then go read this book!
Thoughts:
Once again as I stepped into this Konrath book I knew that I was going to be wrapped within this author's mind once again and thrown back into the heat of things with Jack. The main characters return in this next installment along with jokes from character Harry McGlade which keeps me chuckling quite a bit.
There is quite a bit of tension, suspense, and mystery with this story which kept me staying up late a few nights as I had a hard time putting this book down. Once I got started down the path of Jack and Harry there is no turning back! Another great book in this series of Jack Daniels and looking forward to reading more in the future. Giving this book five "Killer Thriller" stars!
Joe Konrath’s self -depreciating humor is here and it’s endearing as hell. Joe Kornhash. Who is this guy kidding 😆
America’s favorite slimy PI Harry McGlade on the scene with crude humor, providing entertainment alongside our favorite badass female heroine, Jacqueline Daniel’s. These books have always been my comfort reads and I have no idea how this one got past me as I’m near certain I had it pre ordered, but what a pleasant surprise this week! Thinking of going back and giving the phineas troutt series a go.
A solid 3.5…. Still a Jack Daniels story so it pained me to make that rating… but it’s in comparison with other Jack Daniel’s stories. I enjoyed the hell out of it, it’s just milder comparatively. Still worth reading. I did feel like the gas station phantom was a bit unnecessary as a secondary offstage villain. Those scenes kinda threw me and coulda been cut out. The story woulda been just as good without phin and herb for this one… not sure how they coulda been more creatively used but they coulda stayed home I think.
I like an author that knows how to make fun of himself. This book is standard fare for Konrath. Gore and sleazy puns and dry humor, but I guess I don’t mind because I like the characters so much. But I will admit, having Jack be so indestructible at her age is a bit of a stretch even for fiction. And honestly, who in their right mind would invite her anywhere, or travel with her? You’re asking for death. But boy would it be fun to hang with her and Phin and Harry until then.
Jack & Harry are at serial killer con as guest speakers much to Jack's chagrin. Everyone is dressed up as their favorite serial killers and Jack is having flashbacks. Dead bodies start turning up at the conference along with being snowed in at the hotel with real killers. Too much Harry McGlade "humor" in this book and there are some heartfelt moments with the BFF's. In a side story, Phin & Herb are on their way to rescue Jack & Harry during the storm and run into a serial killer of their own. Not as engaging of a book as the rest of the series and was a little disappointing. I did like the tongue in cheek humor of how J.A. inserts himself into his books.
It’s always a fun read with Jack Daniels and the gang. Although this does not rank near the top of my list of best JA Kornhash books, it is my guilty pleasure.
Joe always mixes old favorite character ticks with new experiments in his books. This time we got the TRIGGER WARNING! If you like the Jack Daniels series, this is another must buy, if only to revisit with the gang! Thanks for entertaining us, Joe!
You would think after twenty one books in a series that the storylines would be getting stale. You'd be wrong. Konrath has managed to breathe new life (and death) into this gore fest. A little less comedy nonsense filler and a little more serial killer goodness, with delightful trigger warnings throughout that at times were gratefully appreciated. I thought I was over these characters but I'm 'dying' for the next instalment.
I have been reading the "Jack" Daniels series a long time, and I recommend the entire series if you like comic and sometimes dark mysteries. In this volume,Jack Daniels is a former Chicago homicide detective, and she's made quite a few enemies over her career, so just as she's eliminated many, more pop up...and this book is no different. I recommend this book, and it can be read as a stand-alone. but you may want to read the others first.
The irreverence & snarkiness of JA’s tales always pull me in, like a guilty pleasure…. Which they are. I STILL wanna be Jack when I grow up (even if we are abt the same age), want to hang with Harry & have Phin help my hubs rebuild our deck whilst doing all that & enjoying a new cocktail…. & author Kornhash pens another superlative missive, chained to the floor like a good pup.
Another great book. This, like every other Konrath book I have read, is amazing. Lots of action, violence, comedy and characters that I feel like I know. Konrath does not disappoint. There’s always some new crazy was to be a serial killer in his books and I’m always loving it. The book is great but don’t take my word for it…READ IT!
You'll always have a great time with this series. They are funny, fast paced with great characters. Will someone please make a series??? I really need to see Bruce Campbell play Harry.
Even if you’re pretty sure of the twist from early on, this is still a fantastic read. It’s a bit shorter than most of the JD novels, but it was fun to read. It brought back so many references and memories from older books and made plenty of new ones.
I really love this series and the characters in it. I really hope the series never ends. However, some of the jokes are getting to crude and stupid for me. I would like to see Jack back to the way she was in her earlier books. Tough and smart.
I know I have read all of J.A. Konrath's books, and I have to write this was the worst one I have read. The plot was so bad, the dialog was worse, and I seriously could not wait until I finished it. This will be my last Konrath book.
Jack and Harry are the most in-sync ever. Harry doesn't go over the top in this one either. No pet monkeys etc. They still are true to their characters and deliver a hell of a lot of action and laughs. The psychos provide the EEK factor.
How did Joe Konrath end up being killed off? Who finished the book, and the rest of the series? Does this mean Joe is now a Ghost Writer? Inquiring minds want to know.
Never a letdown. Gross, but with so much humor, you laugh before you'd puke! Total shock on the bad guy. AND JA managed to get everyone into the book! Loved it.
Everything I love about this series this book has - great characters, humor and trigger warning levels of violence. I know, I know, what's not to like, right? :)
This wasn't my favorite of the series, but I will continue to read these books on every release day. I love Jack and Harry but I need more Phin in my life.
