Settling into his hometown after a long span of time, Aadil is trapped in the cross paths of his search and the colossal diplomatic & institutional conspiracy set by an unknown man. As his condition worsens and the stakes get high, he has to decide whether to take on everyone or turn his ‘Shut-Eye’.

Shut Eye by Abhinav Bhatnagar is a book which intrigued me on its first look itself. We could get the vibe of a potential thriller story just by the cover and title.
The main character of this story is Aadil, a prisoner of mysterious paralytic condition. Aadil's character is portrayed taking care of all the aspects of a thriller protagonist. His family was missing for years and he is trying to find them at any cost.
The story dynamics change drastically as he settles in his hometown after so many years. The story picks the beat with the introduction of a mysterious man. Colossal diplomatic & institutional conspiracy of this man created tension to our protagonist.
The story is really interesting and gripping and we could not keep it down. The narration is clean and polished with few characters. The plot is engaging and the pace is varies at places.
Do read this book to know more about Aadil. Will he take on everyone or turn his eyes shut? The stakes are high. I recommend this book to all thriller binge readers.
There are crime thrillers that seek only to thrill, and then there are psychological stories that probe the unlit corners of human suffering. Abhinav Bhatnagar’s "Shut Eye" attempts to straddle both terrains. It is, on the surface, a gripping crime thriller about Aadil, a forensic photographer plagued by sleep paralysis and haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his family. But beneath the cloak of murder, conspiracy, and corruption, this debut book wrestles with weightier questions, What does trauma do to memory? How do institutions exploit the fragile, the vulnerable? And can one ever truly escape the ghosts of the past?
This ambition alone sets the book apart from formulaic thrillers. Yet ambition is a double-edged sword, while the book often delivers moments of piercing emotional honesty and relentless suspense, it occasionally buckles under the weight of its own complexity.
At the heart of the book lies Aadil, a protagonist refreshingly unlike the invincible detectives or journalists that populate crime fiction. He is introverted, socially awkward, emotionally fractured, and physically vulnerable. His bouts of sleep paralysis, described with unnerving clarity, become metaphors for his larger paralysis in life, caught between past and present, trapped in memory even as the world drags him into fresh horrors. This is where the author shines, he refuses to romanticize trauma. Instead, he sketches it in raw strokes, reminding us that grief and fear are not obstacles to be “overcome” but conditions one must live with, often without choice.
The book also digs into the rot of institutions. The asylum that releases Aadil does not represent healing but the bureaucratic indifference of a system that warehouses the mentally ill. The police station where he works as a photographer becomes another face of corruption and moral decay. And looming above all is “The Pilot,” a shadowy manipulator whose very name suggests control, steering lives like disposable cargo. The narrative thus positions personal suffering within larger societal exploitation, trauma is never just private; it festers because the world is corrupt enough to weaponize it.
✍️ Strengths :
🔸Aadil is painfully human. His fears, helplessness, and half-recalled memories resonate far more than any detective’s bravado. This makes the suspense emotionally engaging rather than just adrenaline-driven.
🔸The writing is crisp and accessible without ever feeling shallow. The author knows how to keep the reader on edge, cliffhangers, tight pacing, and a grimy city atmosphere all serve their purpose.
🔸Beyond murders and kidnappings, the narrative aches with loss. The missing family storyline is not a side note; it’s the emotional spine that elevates the thriller into something more existential.
🔸The city, steeped in decay and corruption, almost becomes a character in itself. It mirrors Aadil’s inner disorientation, amplifying the claustrophobia of the story. ••• ✒️ Areas for Improvement :
▪️At times, the narrative feels too eager to juggle multiple crimes, characters, and conspiracies. While this complexity is ambitious, it risks overwhelming the core emotional thread, Aadil’s search for his family. A leaner focus might have sharpened the impact.
▪️Though the chapters end on cliffhangers, there are moments when the story seems rushed, skipping over opportunities for deeper psychological excavation. In contrast, certain expositions of crime feel unnecessarily drawn out.
▪️While Aadil is impressively fleshed out, supporting characters like Umesh or Gautami occasionally serve more as plot devices than layered individuals. Given the book’s concern with human fragility, more nuanced portrayals of these side figures could have enriched the tapestry. ••• In conclusion, it is not merely a debut thriller; it is a statement of intent. Abhinav Bhatnagar clearly aims to write stories that are not only page-turners but also psychological and societal critiques. His protagonist Aadil lingers because he is wounded and real, and because his pain speaks to our own quiet fears, of losing family, of being paralyzed by memory, of living in a world where corruption is so systemic it seeps into personal lives. The book succeeds in creating an immersive and unsettling experience, though at times it stumbles under its own ambitions. Still, one must applaud its courage, it dares to ask what we choose to see and what we prefer to “shut our eyes” against. For readers of crime, psychological fiction, or anyone who seeks a thriller that goes beyond surface-level chills, the book is worth the plunge. It grips, it unsettles, and it leaves you haunted exactly what good crime fiction should do.
"Thoughts, notions, beliefs, ideas, whatever you might call them, have the power to shape your whole life."
It's not always that you come across an intriguing crime-fiction novel that will keep the suspense element alive until the last page.
"Abhinav Bhatnagar," through his debut novel "Shut Eye," brings a work of fiction in the crime genre that will provoke your thoughts and connect you to the emotionally vulnerable characters.
The book starts with Adil's protagonist's release from a medical institution. Though he got released, memories of the past still haunt him. He was in search of his long-lost family. With the help of his friend Umesh he got a job in the "Police station" as a "forensic photographer." Within a few days of joining, he discovered two crimes in a city, a female murder and the kidnapping of an older man. When he visited the crime scene, he saw some familiar signs of his past and link to his lost family, making him agitated. He decided to discover the truth behind the crimes in the city. He encounters mysterious sleep paralysis attacks on this journey, meets with many familiar faces like Gautami, Mervyn, etc., and uncovers a big conspiracy making the city hollow. There was only one mastermind pulling the threads of all the characters and controlling the city. What will Adil choose to reveal the truth on the stake of his loved ones, or will he shut his eye?
From its onset, "Shut Eye" is an action-packed crime mystery that features plenty of action, deception, suspense, and intrigue elements in the story. The plot is complex, with plenty of twists and turns surprising elements. The narrative is medium-paced, which will help to understand the characters' psyche and allow you to connect the dots of the story.
I appreciate the author's skill in crafting the characters with a realistic approach to life. Though the characters are vital to fighting against all the odds, Abhinav shows us the vulnerable side of the characters like their helplessness, pain, dependency, etc., that you feel like among us. The skillful balance of elements like an intricate description of corrupted society, clever and perspective observations, and well-panned plot results in a good crime fiction novel that deserves praise.
I am looking forward to the second part of the book as the last pages leave some unanswered questions. I will recommend this book to all crime-fiction lovers.
🌄SYNOPSIS: Aadil, a prisoner of mysterious paralytic condition, tries to find his family, missing for years.
🌄NOVELTY: The book talks about the protagonist, Aadil who wishes to leave his past behind, but does it really happens? When he is on the journey of leaving past behind and looking forward his life. He gets his own share of old memories which still haunts him. On his journey he get his friend Umesh onboard and how he tackles things and facts unravel in front of him. The story takes you through with un- layering multiple facets.
🌄GUESSWORK: The book has smeared with multiple elements like emotion, dull past, political rivalry and conspiracies. Thus, reader will encountered with many things which is engrossing for readers as well.
🌄LANGUAGE: The language of the book is simple but frequent changes in the timelines in the plot make the narration equivocal.
🌄FINAL CALL: Being a debutant author, the creativity is reflecting through out the book. I would recommend this book to read everyone who is looking forward to read book with multiple fictional elements.
Nothing is complex and worse than a situation when we are chasing something in dark. Searching something without even knowing what it is and not being sure what we are searching whether even exists or not is one of the helpless situation one can be. In such a scenario, our memories would help in connecting dots to reach the end, but if that are also missing, the whole existence becomes questionable.
The story starts in a gripping manner holding the readers to the edge as we wait to witness the first twist. The Author has carefully crafted the story, making us familiar and ready for the upcoming complex plot that would blow our mind. The feeling we experience while reading this book is similar to what the protagonist feel. The kind of confusion, the inner dilemma, the urge to know the truth, the difficult choices would offer a nail biting story.
The storyline is multilayers and the I was even more impressed as the psychological aspect is included. Even though the book length is 200 plus, the story seem to be short read due to it's engaging fast paced plot. The story was even more impressive as Aadil was on a quest to find his missing family and was not just chasing a criminal. Even after being a crime thriller, the book would touch our emotions.
The character development is done extremely well and the way story proceeds will make it hard for the readers to take a break. The hazy memories that keeps coming has taken the story to another level. No matter how huge the expectations maybe, there won't be any disappointments. I am totally impressed by this book and would recommend it to every reader who loves crime thrillers..
Abhinav Bhatnagar's Shut Eye is an amazing debut combining crime, suspense, and psychology into a soul-crushing story. This is the story of Aadil-a forensic photographer with cumulative sleep paralysis and the accordingly mysterious disappearance of his family. With his friend Umesh, Aadil finds himself mired in the grimy annals of a city filled with murders, kidnappings, and conspiracies that blur the gulf between his past and present.
What is really exceptional about this tale was not the breathless, white-knuckle plot twists but its characters. The bewildering, mercifully, absurdly human characters are always identifiable. Aadil is not superhuman; he cannot be because what makes Aadil suffer is fear, paralysis, and tortured memories. Such a realistic narration of agony and loss sets the story apart from being another crime fiction novel.
The writing is lucid, and brisk is the pace, with not even a moment for the strain to make its entrance. The story is complex yet tightly woven, well aware of grabbing your attention right at the crucial moments. While the chapters end on cliffhangers, almost forcing you to absorb the succeeding one, the novel stands confident and immersive for a debut: a promising sign in the author's ability to combine suspense with emotion.
Shut Eye is thrilling; a kind of thriller that'll hold you by its jaws before releasing you from its grip on the very last page. It is a book that will leave you pondering on just how much truth you can seem to bear having been thrust in front of you, or alternatively, how much truth you would prefer to keep your eyes shut to. Strongly recommended for lovers of crime, suspense, and psychological thrillers.
"Shut Eye" by Abhinav Bhatnagar is a crime mystery thriller that hooked me into it from the very beginning.
The story starts with our protagonist, Aadil, getting discharged from a mysterious mental asylum. And Aadil himself wants to move on from his past and focus on his present. So his friend helped him to get a job as a forensic photographer, but he is not able to get away from his past, and he starts again to find his family. And this time he finds out the person who is pulling all the strings.
The first thing I like about the story is how the author sets the mysterious atmosphere and also the characters with a vague introduction but intriguing enough that you won't be able to dismiss it.
Then comes the plot with so many questions from the very beginning: Who is Aadil? Why is he like this? And why he's so hell-bent to dig up his past that he ended up in a mental asylum. With each part we get some answers, and in exchange we get more questions and secrets revealed so that the plot becomes something more than we could have guessed in the beginning of the story.
The ending also makes the story quite unforgettable, and even after finishing it, you will keep thinking about Aadil and what you missed in the whole story. So if you are looking for some action-packed, dark, gritty thriller, then you should pick this book up. It is fast-paced and totally worth the time.
Shut Eye is a psychological thriller with an engrossing narration from the beginning itself. Our protagonist, Adil, is depicted as an introvert personality struggling with his own secrets of the past. His story begins with his release from a medical institution, but he has still not at peace due to his painful memories and longing for his long-lost family.
Adil tries to restart his normal life by working as a forensic photographer at the local police station, but he soon gets caught up in two crimes, which leads to his own confrontation of his past. The signs & patterns of crime trigger his memories of his family tragedy, intensifying his personal trauma and pushing him into a dark web of secrets.
He suffers from sleep paralysis, unsettling encounters and a sinister conspiracy trying to swallow the city.
The suspense keeps building slowly through the pages; the presence of one mastermind adds a thrilling edge to the story.
The author here has addressed emotional and mental traumas through Adil's characters quite sensitively, giving an emotional depth and reliability to its character. Shut Eye is certainly an entertainer as well as an intriguing story.
For fans of psychological thrillers blended with mystery, crime, and a touch of the supernatural, Shuteye should be your next read.
It’s not every day that a crime thriller manages to blend heart-wrenching emotions with suspense in such a seamless way. This book, the author’s debut novel, is one such rare find. The story revolves around Aadil, a forensic photographer haunted by sleep paralysis and the long disappearance of his family. With his friend Umesh by his side, Aadil dives into a dark underbelly of crime, deception, and conspiracies that connect his past and present in chilling ways.
What sets this book apart isn’t just the fast-paced plot with unexpected twists but the deeply human portrayal of its characters. Aadil isn’t portrayed as a hero with superhuman strength; his fears, memories, and helplessness make him relatable and real. The way the author captures their inner struggles, pain, and resilience makes the story far more gripping than your usual thriller.
The writing is sharp, clear, and unhurried, allowing the suspense to build naturally. Each chapter ends on a cliffhanger that practically compels you to turn the page. The city’s corrupt, grim atmosphere adds another layer of intrigue that keeps you hooked.
By the end, this book leaves you questioning how much truth one is willing to face and how much one might choose to ignore. It’s a brilliant read for anyone who loves crime fiction woven with psychological depth.
The book has a catchy cover that made me select this one. I will brown summarise the blurb here that will give you idea about the book. Aadil is the protagonist of the story. The book started with her consultation with a doctor. He was suffering from a mysterious paralytic condition. His parents have been missing for years. He tried hard but couldn’t find it. Now he is shifting to his home town so dynamics are going to change. Now has joined the Police Force as a Forensic Photographer. Doctor have told him not to look in the matter hard. One day Gautami met him. He was in the same batch as Aadil. He remembers her but he felt weird as she is quite calm and composed though her father has been in kidnapped and there was no ransom call. Gautami was in touch of a mysterious man who is inquiring about Aadil. Now read the book to how the story proceeds. I liked the plot. It’s unique. Author has created a nice suspense and maintained it till the end. Author has woven a nice story with limited characters. The narration style of the author is crisp and captivating. It’s a nice dark thriller. The language of the book is lucid so that everyone can enjoy reading it. Quite a page turner for me. Good one. Recommended from my side.
“Some truths demand to be seen… others demand you to shut your eye.” 👁️✨
Aadil, fresh out of a mental institution, is haunted by his missing family and a mysterious paralytic condition. With his friend Umesh’s help he lands a job as a forensic photographer. 🔥 “Not every crime scene is outside… some are inside your mind.”
Sleep paralysis. Hidden conspiracies. A city rotting from within. One mastermind pulling all the strings. The question is—will Aadil expose the truth or close his eyes forever?

The story is slow to start but gathers momentum later. The characters are well crafted; especially Aadil, capturing his confusion and mental turmoil. The narrative keeps you engaged with its unpredictability.

With its suspenseful atmosphere and mind-bending narration, "Shut Eye" is an engrossing thriller that will keep you watching.
The protagonist of the tale is Aadil, who recently recovered from an unexplained sickness and was freed from the sanatorium. He soon secures a position as a forensic photographer at the local police department, but he continues to search for his family.
Aadil, quickly learns that the victims he is seeing have connections to his own family members who have gone missing. What ties them together? Or is there a more significant plot in the works?
I was unable to put the novel down since it is so compelling and fascinating. There aren't many characters, and the narration is clear and well-written. The pace fluctuates throughout, and the plot is captivating.
I admire the author's ability to create people that have a genuine outlook on life. Abhinav shows us the characters' sensitive sides, such as their helplessness, suffering, dependency, etc., that you feel among us, even though they are essential to overcoming all the obstacles.
Since the book's final chapters leave certain things unanswered, I am eager to read the second section. I will suggest this book to everyone who enjoys criminal fiction.
Shut Eye is a rare kind of thriller that grips you not only with its suspense but also with how close it feels to real life. At the heart of the story is Aadil, a man carrying the weight of trauma, struggling with sleep paralysis while trying to start over. What struck me right away was how human he felt tired, flawed, and still holding on to the hope of finding his missing family.
As the story moves forward, it becomes much bigger than a personal tragedy. Aadil’s work as a forensic photographer places him at the center of unsettling crime scenes, where his past keeps haunting him. Every clue he discovers not only pushes the mystery ahead but also blurs the line between his sanity and his nightmares. The presence of “The Pilot” adds a chilling layer, reminding us that there is more at risk than Aadil understands.
What I appreciated most is how the book manages its pace. There are sharp turns that keep the tension high, but there are also quiet moments where Aadil’s vulnerability comes through. This makes the story feel less like a tale of an untouchable hero and more like the struggle of a man trying to hold on.
For anyone who enjoys crime thrillers filled with psychological depth and raw emotion, Shut Eye is a dark and rewarding read.
The captivating cover and the promise of an exciting mystery drew me in as soon as I picked up "Shut Eye." Adil, a forensic photographer recently discharged from a medical facility, is the protagonist of the tale.
His history continues to haunt him as he searches for his long-lost family. After beginning his new job, he finds himself looking into two distinct crimes—a kidnapping and a murder—and learns that they are somehow related to his own past. You're kept guessing at every turn by the plot's many surprises. There are mysterious episodes of sleep paralysis and eerie run-ins with old acquaintances along Adil's suspenseful journey.
The author does a fantastic job of gradually exposing a vast conspiracy that has taken over the city. As Adil approaches the truth and is forced to decide between revealing a strong mastermind and defending his loved ones, the tension rises just right. Anyone who enjoys a good crime thriller should read this book.
The fast-paced action makes it a true page-turner, and the writing is clear and simple to follow. Even though there were some unanswered questions, I was captivated from start to finish and left wanting more. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
Reading Shut Eye felt like stepping into a restless dream where reality keeps slipping away. Aadil, the main character, isn’t a typical hero. He is vulnerable, worn out, and haunted by a past that will not leave him alone. His struggle with sleep paralysis is described so vividly that I could almost feel the same weight pressing down, the same helplessness between sleep and waking.
As the story unfolds, his personal battles open into something much darker. Through his work as a forensic photographer, Aadil is pulled into a world of crime and corruption that feels disturbingly real. Each revelation adds to the unease, and the mysterious presence of the Pilot hangs over everything like a constant shadow.
What stood out most for me was the emotional honesty. Beneath the suspense is the story of a man searching for meaning, trying to piece together his broken life while living with the pain of his missing family. The writing is intense, but it also slows down at the right moments, letting you sit with Aadil’s pain and resilience.
Shut Eye is more than just a thriller. It is a powerful journey into the fragile corners of the human mind, and it lingers long after you close the book.
I love reading crime thrillers and thus I decided to pick this book up. The cover is so intriguing that it lured me to dive deeper into the book. The title is quite interesting.
