Apollo's Chariot : The Astrological Sun

Rate this book
Many people are familiar with astrology only through Sun-sign columns in newspapers, but they have little understanding of what it really means to be born "under" a particular zodiac sign. The astrological student may know that the Sun is the most important factor in the birth horoscope, but frequently used terms such as "self-expression" give little insight into this most profound and complex of astrological symbols. The seminars in this volume explore the many dimensions of the astrological Sun, from the Sun as a father-symbol to its importance as a significator of personal identity, vocation, and spiritual values. Also examined are progressions of the Sun to natal planets, and major planetary aspects to the natal Sun. With so little written work available on the Sun in the horoscope, this innovative volume offers psychological and astrological perspectives which will be invaluable for both the student and the professional astrologer.

Insightful interpretation of the Sun myths. The analogy between the Sun and self-identity is thought-invoking. The relationship between play, struggles, and solar shine is the most empowering part for me. The writing has a unique sense of gracefulness. There are many sentences that I would like to come back to again and again.

I first became interested in astrology thirty years ago and having neglected it for the last several years my interest has revived. I have always admired Liz Greene’s books on the subject, finding them thought provoking and well written. This book is no exception. Linking psychology with the astrological birth chart can result in better understanding for the individual of their own problems in life. It can also help the individual to deal with crises in their lives and help them make better use of their own abilities.

Anyone who thinks of astrology as sun sign columns in newspapers and magazines will be surprised but how complex the influence of the natal sun can be in the individual’s life. We need to live out the qualities of the sun in our birth charts to feel whole and alive but it may be a lifetime quest to fully express these qualities. If you have a basic knowledge of the building blocks of chart analysis – planets, signs, houses, transit and progressions – then you will be able to gain a great deal from this thought provoking study of the astrological sun’s role in our lives. An interest in Jungian psychology would also help.

This book consists of transcripts of two seminars given by the author in connection with the Centre for Psychological Astrology over ten years ago. They are still relevant today and the comments on Tony Blair’s chart make interesting reading looking back on him from today’s perspective. I like the seminar transcript format as it provides interesting comments from the seminar participants which often add further insights.

As always, Liz Greenes books are insightful and useful. As this is again a transcript from a couple of seminars from the 1990s there is interaction from the audience (whether you like it or not!) and Liz's usual in-depth, honest replies.

This is not an astrology cookbook, you will need more than a basic knowledge of astrology; however for anyone looking to dive deeper into the subject, this is among the many volumes by this author and teacher that should be on your shelf if you are looking to take up the art seriously.

Great insights into Sun-Chiron aspects, among others. I will revisit this again.
