David Martyn Lloyd-Jones was a Welsh Protestant minister, preacher and medical doctor who was influential in the Reformed wing of the British evangelical movement in the 20th century. For almost 30 years, he was the minister of Westminster Chapel in London. Lloyd-Jones was strongly opposed to Liberal Christianity, which had become a part of many Christian denominations; he regarded it as aberrant. He disagreed with the broad church approach and encouraged evangelical Christians (particularly Anglicans) to leave their existing denominations. He believed that true Christian fellowship was possible only amongst those who shared common convictions regarding the nature of the faith.

David Martyn Lloyd-Jones was married to Bethan Lloyd-Jones

Pretty much everything I read by this man has been top-notch. The title says it all, understanding the times in particular through the lenses of scripture. It is a kind of a soup-to-nuts book. He covers everything from the state of religion, conversions, (differences between psychological and spiritual) Stresses the importance of the Bible, and even what preaching is and isn't.

The book is based on a series given between 1942 - 1977. It was written with Quite a backdrop when considering the world climate between those years.

Yes, I would recommend this book, and not just a one-time read either but good solid reference material for future sermons or Sunday School lessons.

Knowing the Times: Addresses Delivered on Various Occasions 1942-1977 takes the reader deep into the theology, convictions and vision of Lloyd Jones. You will see his view of the importance of understanding history and how it frames our interpretation of the present, his view of the great danger of what he called the ‘ecumenical spirit’ which he fought vociferously against, his understanding of what preaching is as compared to lecturers and teachers (and his view that most of what is happening from pulpits today is not preaching at all), and his view of what theological colleges should strive to be and his staunch anti-scholastic model position which he feels almost all seminaries are today. This he feels explains the dearth of powerful preachers in our time.
This book will challenge your existing biases and paradigms but his presentation of facts combined with brilliant logic will surely cause you to, at least put your golden calves in the spotlight and examine them from every side in light of biblical reason, and perhaps you’ll come away convicted and changed for the better.

This book has sat on my shelf for a few years, and I have been looking forward to it. As I made my way through it, I was disappointed (in comparison to my anticipation of it). I ended up skimming through it without much reason to slow down and dive into the meat of the chapters.

Martyn Lloyd-Jones (MLJ) is an excellent expositor of the Scriptures, and I think that is where he shines best. The contents of this book is a collection of sermons, speeches, and radio addresses over a period of time. During the time they were originally given, people would have likely been very pleased because of his reputation and timely words. The core principles are good, but much of the other content (i.e. current situation, outlook in the world, manner of speaking, illustrations) are out of date. And, it is less compelling to read a compilation of of someone's speaking than a book specifically prepared for the subject of its title.

Always thought-provoking. One of the greatest influences to one of the greatest contemporary preachers (Keller).
