Zadok #2

Ruby Red

Rate this book
Alex has called it quits and stormed off, leaving Harlow alone and vulnerable in the danger zone with little chance of survival and a broken heart.

Luckily Jax finds her and brings her back to the caves. However, little does she know she’s returning with multiple souvenirs.

Standing out for all the wrong reasons has become Harlow’s specialty, and as the effects of her vertic switz tattoo set in and new issues are brought to light, she and her friends will find themselves in the line of fire with Rae and Electra.

Despite Jax’s attempts to neutralise the colour system, the Winter caves have become a death trap for Harlow, and Summer’s castle is no place for a Zeek. Harlow’s only sanctuary might be Spring’s Drake village, but her former ties to a Vallon are sure to cause friction with some of the residents.

Tough decisions will need to be made, but will she make the right ones?

I was very excited to read through the POV of Alex/Slater in this book, as well as Harlow/Ruby, Zavier, and another unexpected POV at the end.
There were a few surprises, I must say!
I feel like we really got to know all of the characters on a deeper level and I rather enjoyed the ongoing banter.
Just like book one, Pastel Pink, the end of Ruby Red has me screaming for more. Why do you do this to me Nikki Minty?
I’m eagerly awaiting book 3.

This book was impossible to put down. I love that we got to explore some of the other races this time around, and I really enjoyed reading through the extra POVs, they were all uniquely done.
Jax makes my heart melt.
I hate that I have to wait for book 3.

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.
I’m quite partial to character driven books and I really feel like Nikki Minty’s characters in books 1 and 2 really come alive on the page. Some characters I really like and some I really don’t but that’s the beauty of it.
I think some of the new characters we meet in Spring are wonderful. I also thought the added two perspectives worked well and gave us more insight to other characters within the story.
I feel as if I’m more in tune with Zadok now that I’ve seen more of the other races and their way of living.
This is a very engaging world Nikki Minty has created and I’m keen to see where book 3 takes us.
Just like with book 1, I’m very impressed with the cover art.

I was given a free copy of Ruby Red, and I've gotta say, I'm loving the covers from the Zadok series. Well done to the cover artist.

Ruby Red was fantastic sequel to Pastel Pink it's got all the right ingredients to keep me interested and invested.

I like that we meet other characters from other backgrounds and get to experience their way of living.

Once again I found the main characters easy to read through, including the two extra POV's given. They are all diverse, easy to tell apart, and bring a new feel to the story.

I highly recommend this book and I'm looking forward to the next instalment, Powerful Purples.

Thanks to Booksirens for the free copy in exchange for a review.

Ruby Red started precisely where Pastel Pink ended and again had me hooked from the get go. This book was a wonderful sequel and most certainly didn't disappoint. It took us to lots of new places on Zadok and allowed us to see the planet and different races through multiple sets of eyes.

I found the first book Pastel Pink gripping because it tackled some of the hard hitting subjects like racism and prejudice behaviour, and I was pleased to discover that Jax and his close circle of warriors are still fighting for equal rights between the colours. May I say I absolutely LOVE Jax and everything he stands for. He is definitely my favourite character in both books.

I also found it interesting to see how the other races treat the different colours within their race. I enjoyed the trips out to spring, they were the highlights of the book.

I wish Powerful Purples was up already, I can hardly wait to see where this adventure ends. I know what I want to see happen.

Book 2 was even more fun than book 1. I found the characters interactions very entertaining. There’s a lot more banter and a few of the comments said between characters made me laugh at times.
We explore a lot more of Zadok in this book which is cool. We also get to know all of the main characters on a deeper level.
I like how Nikki swaps her POV’s to work with scenes. It gives us a greater understanding to what all the characters are thinking. I like being able to jump into more than one head while reading a book.

Again I’m left dangling on the edge of a cliff. I’ll be keeping an eye out for book 3.

Another sensational cover. I like the fire and the tatts.
Book 2 was very different to what I was expecting, but this being said, I did enjoy the new direction of the story. We met the Drakes halfway through the book and we got to see snippets of Summer and the Vallons through Alex/Slater’s eyes which was interesting.
Like book 1 a few things were left unresolved so I’m curious to see how book 3 plays out.

This sequel was fantastic. We got to see more of the other races as I’d hoped. The world building was expanded upon. I’m thinking of taking a holiday in Spring, it sounds magical. I’m not too sure about Summer though.

I have been waiting eagerly for book 2 of the Zadok series and Ruby Red certainly didn’t disappoint.
Firstly the cover is again, amazing. Alex/Slater is even more handsome than I imagined.

The story takes off exactly where book 1 finished and as I’ve come to expect from Nikki Minty’s story telling, the book was just as fast paced and exciting as Pastel Pink.

The world building was fantastic. I’m amazed at the authors ability to not only imagine, but also describe so well the planet of Zadok. I enjoyed seeing Summer and Spring and felt for Jax at the end.

This was a great addition to the Zadok series and cannot wait for the next book (Please let Harlow pick Jax).

The drama, action and romance continue with some new POVs included in the narrative.

I was pleased to see a bit more of Jax in this book, he’s quickly becoming my favorite character of this series.

The world building was expanded upon and I was excited to explore both Spring and Summer through the eyes of Harlow and Alex/Slater.

Zannah is extremely sassy to read through. I’m interested in getting to know a little more about her and what makes her tick. Hopefully there will be more of her story to come in book 3.

Ruby Red is a perfect continuation from Pastel Pink.
Again the world building is on point.
The cast broadens as we move into other sections of Zadok and see where-and-how some of the other races live. We have new POVs to read through which I found refreshing, and I feel it brings something more to the overall story. Also I really enjoyed the banter in this book.
I will definitely be turning back in for book 3.

This sequel didn’t disappoint. I found myself enjoying the growth of certain relationships in this book as well as the entertaining dialogue between several characters.
It was refreshing to get a glimpse through Slater’s eyes and to get a bit of his backstory. We also got Zannah’s POV. She is a very strong character.
I was fully immersed in Spring, it felt very magical.
This was another solid read which I thoroughly recommend. I will be staying tuned for Powerful Purples.

Just Wow (Again)

One of the cool things about being an avid listener is being able to start and finish books quickly. Another is doing so with a full series as well. While I still have one book (at least one produced book) – I read Pastel Pink less than a week ago and I was able to get through the second book in quick succession – really allowing me to dive deep into the series.

The unfortunate part is everything I said in the first review is still true in this book. The social commentary is there and will be there in all of the books – just a guess due to the names of the books and the entire caste/race system in place. The other thing that’s still there and clear and present for the audiobook listener is the just phenomenal narration by the cast. They absolutely nail this one and I’m sure the third book will be the same.

In Ruby Red, we’re treated to more of the same from Pastel Pink – but I don’t say that with a negative connotation. I mean that completely complimentary. It’s a direct continuation of the first book and it just picks right up and goes with it. (I will warn that if you haven’t read the first book, I’d recommend going back to that one first). But the character building along with the excellent world-building is on full display throughout Ruby Red and really makes this stand out.

What I have the hardest time believing is just how good this series is. I don’t want to spoil anything but wow, it just flies off of the page and into my head. I can almost vividly imagine almost every situation and circumstance that each character is thrown into and it’s just written by an absolute pro in Nikki Minty.

Overall, you can tell I enjoyed this one. The great character and world-building, excellent action, and overall incredibly well-produced audiobook have this as such a good book and a great series.

Thank you to NetGalley, BooksGoSocial, and Nikki Minty for the opportunity to read Ruby Red in exchange for an honest review.

Ruby Red is the second book in the Zadok Series, following Pastel Pink, though this second installment is far superior and immensely heart-pounding.

SPOILERS if you have not read Pastel Pink.

As this novel picks up right where the first one left off, with Harlow being left alone in the dangerous forest after certain devastating events happened between her Earth spirit, Ruby, and that of Vallon Slater's Earth Spirit, Alex.

While I like to touch on the book's plot with the majority of my reviews, I feel like discussing most aspects of the plot for this novel would give all the goods away. What I'd really like to say is the drama and tension is so much more intense in this book than the first one. All the characters were introduces and developed in book one, while this novel revolves around all these character's relationships in interesting and highly unexpected ways.

I very much appreciate the different relationships and drama going on among Harlow, Zavier, Jax, Slater, and Floss, with a few others strewn in. I also appreciate that the Earth aspect of this novel with Ruby is very small and just didn't feel like it had a place in this story. Most of Harlow's time is spent on Zadok, with about 5% of the novel being on Earth, if that, as opposed to Pastel Pink's 50/50 of the storylines. This book was much more focused, and the worldbuilding continues to develop in interesting ways.

A few unexpected twists occur that really add to the relationship drama and dynamic of the novel. I'll touch on just a few of the plot elements without giving away all the true fun of it.

Jax: still into Harlow and working on breaking down the color hierarchy
Zavier: still into Harlow, but may finally move on...maybe?
Slater: still into Harlow, even though he treated her poorly and overreacted
Floss: maybe kind of starting to like her sister?
Harlow: dealing with her own feelings, hiding from the color system because of her current circumstances, more so than usual, and seeing some new places on Zadok outside of the Zeek caves

The end was a bit awkward, but  there is a lot of potential for events to come with these characters. A really fun, fast read, even better than the first novel, which has me itching for book three! And yes, it would appear there will be a third installment October 2021 called Powerful Purples.

Thank you to BooksGoSocial for providing an eARC of “Ruby Red” by Nikki Minty through NetGalley for me to read and give an honest review!

After the events of “Pastel Pink”, “Ruby Red” pretty much starts off where we were left off. As the cover of the book suggests, we are given a POV of Alex, which I found really interesting, as it gave us more insight on the life of a Vallon in Summer, as well as getting to experience all of Alex’s thoughts. I loved the developments that Harlow and her other Zeek friends were given, but I thought the continued arc with her human twin, Jade, felt somewhat random and unresolved by the end. I also was overall not a fan of the way this book ended. It was rather abrupt and did not feel like an end at all, even knowing there will be another sequel to come. As I already mentioned, I loved learning more about Nikki Minty’s really imaginative world-building and we got even more of that when Harlow went to spend some time in Spring. I increasingly fell even more in love with all of the characters throughout this book, and I will even go as far as to say that it is the character interactions and relationships that carried this book. I am still very much looking forward to the next sequel to find out what happens next!

Ruby Red is the second exciting novel in the captivating Zadok Series by rising and talented author Nikki Minty. Beautifully written fantasy and captivating magical realism combine successfully in this next adventure that is perfectly suited and tailored for young adults.

The action in Ruby Red picks up immediately after the events in the previous book, Pastel Pink, and finds our main characters in all sorts of difficult situations.

Being a direct continuation to the first novel, I highly recommend that you start with that one. Without me spoiling the storyline for you, all I can say is that almost all the main characters are making a return and will have to live with difficult decisions that they were forced to take. The unrest in the caste Color system, a dangerous love triangle and other unforeseen situations will keep the story going and fresh throughout the 10 hours and a half duration of this audio production.

Ruby Red is well written, fast paced and filled with vivid characters and descriptions. The plot is very interesting, the setting is original and the romance is treated with respect and consideration.

The audio production for Ruby Red is exquisitely brought to life by four extremely talented voiceover artists, with one more than in the previous audiobook from this series. Khristine Hvam is an award-winning audiobook narrator, producer, director, and voice-over actress. Jodie Harris is an Australian actress, singer, voice artist, audiobook narrator and singing teacher, James Patrick Cronin is an award winning American audiobook narrator and stage actor, while James Fouhey is an actor and AudioFile Earphones award-winning narrator living in New York City.

Each of them bring their A-game to the table and create a complete level of immersion for the listener with different voices and accents for all the characters. This second novel is running wild with emotion and tension, so experienced narrators are the only ones who can make us feel such sentiments appropriately.

Again, I want to congratulate the author and the production team for handling this audiobook with professionalism and the listeners with the respect they deserve. It’s not easy to bring together so many talented narrators, but it’s mandatory for a story with so many points of view.

I can’t wait to see what’s next in the lives of these colorful characters, so I will continue to listen to this entertaining series! Powerful Purples is the next adventure in the saga and I have it in my library already!

OK wow! I can't believe it took me so long to pick up this sequel after the cliffhanger ending in 'Pastel Pink' but I am so glad I finally did! This book was a jam-packed, rollercoaster of emotions with multiple POVs, all revealing new information. I have to say I am officially addicted to this story.

Ruby Red picks up from the events at the end of Pastel Pink and we're thrown straight into Harlow's ever growing complicated life. The storyline in this sequel is so interesting and fast-paced that I was hooked from the very start. There's so many twist and turns in the plot and mind-blowing information gets revealed. I had to stop reading multiple times just to process exactly what just happened!

The characters go through so much growth and development. Not just Harlow but side characters as well such as Zavier, Minty and Floss. While I find Harlow to be extremely naive for someone who is living her second life, I have to admit that I wouldn't know what to do if I was in her situation so I don't judge her. We do see her becoming more assertive in her feelings throughout the book though which I enjoyed.

The romance in this book while enjoyable to read is also infuriating!!! The love triangle is written really well in my opinion but Alex has officially lost all credit with me. I loved some of the new relationships that formed as well as new couples that were introduced in this story.

Once again Nikki leaves us with a sharp and bitter ending and I don't know how I'm going to wait for the third book to be available. I'm so excited for Powerful Purples and will definitely be reading it as soon as I possibly can!

First of all I finished this in less than a day! When a story is so good you can’t put it down the author is doing something right. And yet again I’m annoyed at myself for reading it so fast and now having to wait for the next book 😂 I love this story. It’s unlike anything I’ve read before and the twists and turns that you don’t see coming are absolutely brilliant. Can’t wait to have them all as paper copies on my bookshelf.

With every book I read, I'm falling more and more in love with this series. I had very high expectations from this one due to the way things ended in the previous book, and I can happily say that it surpassed all those expectations.

The character development is very satisfying. They have so much more depth; the author has explored their vulnerabilities, motivations, and behavioural patterns that made me connect with them. I love found-family tropes and strong friendships, so I felt like I was a part of the group while reading the book.

The character dynamics have also changed. Certain characters I did not like in the past have become my favourites, like Floss. I liked that the changes in her were gradual; at the same time, her personality did not change drastically. I'm very excited to see her progress in her romantic relationship.

This book was mostly set on Zadok instead of Earth, so I got to see some other factions on the planet like the Drakes. The book also highlighted how they functioned differently from the Zeeks and Vallons and their beliefs as well.

The tension, the twists, and how each problem was dealt with was quite interesting. I can't wait to read the final book and see what surprises it holds. This is a fantastic sequel, and I recommend it to everyone who enjoys sci-fi, fantasy, magical realism, and paranormal elements.

A huge thank you to BookSirens and Nikki Minty for providing me with an eARC. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions are my own.

Wow. This book was such a great follow-up to the first and SO MUCH happened, I'm still trying to process all of it. I kind of anticipated some of what was coming, but nothing could've prepared me for all of it.

I loved that we got to see more of the world in this one and I really really really hope we get even more in the next book. I'm honestly already chomping at the bit for the next book and cannot wait to read that one as well.

I haven't read an ARC in a while that immediately made me want to own physical copies of the books, but this series is one of them. I ordered the first as soon as I finished it and can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy of this as well.

The magic, the world building, and the plot for this series is so intriguing and I cannot wait to see how things play out for Harlow and the gang. I don't want to give any plot points away because I want people to experience this series for themselves. This is a GREAT fantasy series.

OMG where do I even begin?!
This book was HECTIC. After the cliffhanger of Pastel Pink I was sooo ready to get going with Ruby Red. Let me tell you now that this book did not disappoint. I’m pretty sure I even enjoyed it more than Pastel Pink, which is saying a lot because I LOVED Pastel Pink, like a lot

All the new POV’s were so so great to read. I loved reading Alex/Slater’s POV, Zavier and the surprise one towards the end. But you also still have Ruby/Harlow’s Chapters which were of course 👌👌
I actually really started to like Harlow/Ruby a lot more in this book, I felt like she really changed in a good way, I’m excited to see where her relationships goes with some of the other characters in the next book 👀

All the drama going down in this book was just so exciting to read, there were definitely a few “oh shit” moments 😂
I also loved exploring more about some of the other races this time! Those specific chapters were definitely some of my favourites

Also obviously just wanting to say…

This is the second book in the series and it is just as engaging as the first - if not more so!

We follow Harlow/Ruby after she's left by Alex and found by Jax. Without giving anything away....there's some super big surprises here! Which I did not see coming!

We follow multiple viewpoints which gives a really personal point of view to various scenes that take place. It's great to be able to actually get inside the characters minds and follow along with them. Each chapter is titled really clearly so readers don't get lost or mixed up.

It's cool how the character of Harlow/Ruby can go back and visit her sister and communicate with her in the 'Real World' and it's a great break from the fast paced action of the Zadok world.

While Harlow/Ruby is a prominent character - Minty is definitely a fave- she is feisty and tough!

What a talent Nikki Minty has! She has constructed this world which is brutal and divided, but also has these moments of friendship, family and love that creates hope and pulls everything and everyone together.

Cannot wait to read Book 3! Thank -you Nikki for sending me this copy! What a book!

Highly Recommend!

Another amazing book by Nikki Minty that I finished in a day because I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.
The attention to the masterfully interwoven plot is amazing. There are so many great characters with intricate personalities and backstories, that make the story really come to life on the page.

I loved exploring more of the world as the book progressed, we get to spend some time in Spring!🌸

In this book we also get more cute husken dogs! ❤️ cute men 😉, and some amazing moments between friends.

Sometimes you want to scream at Harlow and the other characters but you can always understand where they're coming from.

Also following a character that recognises the signs of an abusive relationship is brilliant and what the world needs more of.

Loved this book so please go read Ruby Red and support indie authors, highly recommend.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of this book. I will try and leave as little spoilers as possible in this review.

This series has become a top favourite for me since reading it. I love how simple the writing is, and I don’t mean that to be cruel. I mean that it’s a breath of fresh air compared to being stuck in a house without A/C. In the world of books these days, between 20+ books in a series and books with so much wording it gets overwhelming, having a light simple read like this clears my mind and I get to just enjoy the story.

Nikki has a brilliant mind when it comes to writing, and I can’t believe everything that happens in one book. Just having different POVs, as much conflict as there is and the characters. I’m hooked from page one of Pastel Pink. Nikki needs more recognition as an author and I hope that in the future she gets the spot light she deserves!

I am so extremely grateful to have received this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much to NetGalley and the author for this amazing opportunity!!

I was SO excited for this sequel and I am so thankful for the author for getting it to us so quickly. The ending of the first book was AMAZING and such a shock and I needed the next book as soon as possible. Now that it is here and read it…. I still need answers y’all. Like the first book, this plot was full of twists and turns and gave me the shock of a lifetime and went in such a crazy direction that I never expected. The author also did a wonderful job of getting us back into the groove of the world and all its characters without over summarizing. I popped right into this unique and fantastical world without any bumps and as though I never left. It was awesome and I didn’t have to read the first book to get back into it. So thanks so much for that Ms. Minty!!!

Although we popped into the human world a couple brief times, the story took place mostly in the other fantasy world of Harlow and the lovely Jax…..It was very interesting getting to know more and more about this awesome world and all its very unique and original characteristics. I loved that we got to see more of Winter and get more glimpses into the world of Summer. Summer sounds as hot as California right now and it was like coming home. I can’t wait to find out more about this cutthroat setting in the next book! Ugh I need the next book or I’m going to die of impatience…..Especially with all of the plot twists that this author has thrust in this book…. I JUST NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!!!

The story had so many perspectives in the first book and in the second there were even more and although I loved getting everyone’s point of view… WHERE WAS JAX’s perspective??!?! I needed it so bad and I honestly was just hoping that each new chapter would have it and so disappointed when it wasn’t. So that is literally my only complaint because other than that, this book was good y’all and the sexual tension was so real between some of my favorite characters. Harlow is such a sweetheart and I just need her to have a happy ending because the poor thing is STRUGGLING. Just when you think she will get some form of happiness, the rug is swept from under her. I just want her to be happy with Jax, that is all I ask. Also, some of the characters that I loved in the first book are straight up dead to me now… cough cough ALEX cough cough. I JUST WANT TO SLAP HIS SELFISH BUTT and for him to go away.

UGH I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW PLEASE!!!!

Overall, such a wonderful and thrilling sequel and I can’t wait for the next installment to this amazing series!!!
