Dominique LeSaint-Favier hasn't been home to New Orleans in over a decade.

But when she receives an unexpected call about her ailing father, she and her daughter, Gia, take the first flight out. They’re greeted by Dominique's sisters and mother, but the tension between Dominique and her mother is high and reminiscent of the strain between her and Gia. Her father's final wishes cause the past to be revisited and a whirlwind of emotions and events to unfurl. Vüdü Dahl is an intergenerational story of spiritual exploration and acceptance that navigates through the valleys of a family’s fight for understanding, healing, tradition and legacy.

I received this book from a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book, it was a quick, easy and enjoyable read.
Dominique and her daughter Gia make a trip back to New Orleans when Dominique’s father becomes ill. The trip puts Dominique back into the life she worked hard to leave, can she do this? The family is changing as are the family’s expectations of her. Can she give everything up that she’s worked so hard to build and be a part of what her Mother has built? Where will that put Gia?

Tash Hawthorne’s novel “VUDU DAHL” which I received through Goodreads Giveaways opens when Dominique LeSaint-Favier with her daughter seventeen-year-old Gia is drawn home to Louisiana after many years to see her ailing father. A funeral director in a profitable business she’s emotionally torn about reuniting with her family as tensions run high with her mother and her unstable sister Simone who fears she’ll lose the man she loves to Dominique. With her father’s dying wish, her anxiety escalates as she is forced to face her past with its whirlwind of emotional upheavals and tragic mistakes.

Fast-paced and riveting the author takes you on an intergenerational journey as a family wades through years of misunderstandings, exploring their traditions while searching for healing. The plot is mesmerizing, keeping the reader spellbound as it explores Dominique’s failed relationships, the love of two men, her sudden seizures and a shooting that could rob her of her daughter. The intensity heats up as the action escalates and the plot moves seamlessly to a confrontation that leaves a startling cliff-hanger ripe for a second book.

Among a cast of compelling characters breathing life into this story are Dominique LeSaint-Favier who’s strong, resilient but struggles emotionally with her past; her troubled teenage daughter Gia, an old soul; the obsessed, well-groomed Antoine Brevard; the love of her mother’s life and father of her sons the respectful, protective Esai Polanco; and her strong-willed, strict but loving mother Corrine. All these personalities and even darker ones like her sister the jealous, envious and mentally ill Simone add fire and power to a story you can’t put down until finished.

Don’t let the title fool you “VUDU DAHL” is a well-written, fascinating novel that will have you all too soon looking for the next exciting book.

They say never judge a book by its cover but I did just that with my Goodreads win of Vudu Dahl by Tash Hawthorne. I thought oh a good macabre book like Island of the dolls or the Changeling. The title and cover were magnificent. Then I read the blurb on the back (because I don't do that prior either), and thought oh gee a touchy-feely book, which I am not into.
But this story was so captivating that it just sucks you right in. No touchy feels in this book. The Characters bring such a life to the story that it makes your head spin and you can't sleep because it's like the book has a life of its own.
It has a cliff hanger to beat all cliff hangers so reading the follow up must be a definite read. At least there better be a follow up.
Looking foreword to the continuation.
Great job Tash.
Cheers

Firstly, I must disclose that I won this novel and a giveaway. That in no way affects my review of this work as my opinion is entirely separate from the fact that this book was free for me.I would say that this novel leans towards literary Gothic fiction.
Things that I liked:
The fast-paced plot, the mother-daughter relationship, the atmosphere, and the general character development. I will say that there are several instances in which the dialogue falters. Some of the dialogue of the detective could have been further developed and researched. It didn't always ring true for me. Also, there was some run-on sentences that would have benefited from an editor being a little stricter. For self-published work however I think that this was well done.
Overall, I enjoyed this and would recommend it as a read in the future.

Okay but not great book. I feel it could have been edited a little better and the police director use was odd for me. There is police chiefs. Police commissioners, police captains but I’ve never heard and couldn’t find a single mention of police directors.
