Getaway Bay Romance #4

The Island Retreat

Rate this book
Shannon's 35, divorced, and the highlight of her day is getting to the coffee shop before the morning rush. She tells herself that's fine, because she's got two cats and a past filled with emotional abuse. But she might be ready to heal so she can retreat into the arms of a man she's known for years...

Shannon Bell has been the owner's assistant at Your Tidal Forever, a wedding planning service, for five years. She's content in her single life and fearful of ever having an intimate relationship with a man due to previous abuse. She sees Jeremiah Yeates in line to get coffee every morning, and sure, he's the drop-dead gorgeous doctor who works next door to her office.

But actually starting a relationship with him? Shannon's not so sure about that.

For a year now, Jeremiah has timed his coffee runs so he can see Shannon. They've been friendly, but he doesn't know how to take his flirty behavior to the next level—until she gets a flat tire in the parking lot and needs a ride to work. He's being honored at an island-wide event for his counseling work with children, and he needs a date.

When he asks Shannon, she says yes, because Jeremiah has the perfect arms for a retreat...

The connection between Shannon and Jeremiah is undeniable. But he's busy helping his aging parents with their yard work and dealing with his client load. Then the owner at Your Tidal Forever starts training Shannon to take over the whole business. Combined with her still-healing wounds from the past, can Shannon and Jeremiah make time for their island retreat? Or will their happily-ever-after go out with the tide?

Just an easy light romance book. More of the same characters and easy to read. My only complaint is each book gives you a "year in the future" ending. Then the next book starts before that year is up. For example, Riley gets married at the end of this book, but she's not yet married in the next book. So strange.

There's allegedly 7 books in the series, but I feel like this is numbered wrong. Anyway, easy to listen to. Don't have to pay a ton of attention and can still follow along. I've already started the next book.

Shannon has a timed life. Everything is planned except falling in love again. She had a bad experience in her past and suffers anxiety about anyone getting near. Dr. Jeremiah has been admiring Shannon for a year at the coffee shop. When she has a flat tire, they meet up close. But he is looking for love and marriage. Can they work it out?

The copy I read was called “The Island Retreat”. I liked Jeremiah and I started out liking Shannon but then she started ghosting him for no reason and I stopped liking her. It went on for weeks and she never explained it or even really apologized. Apparently adopting a dog supposedly fixed her? They got together in the end but that weird behaviour was never really addressed so it kind of ruined it for me.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT
A doctor, a wedding planner, and a flat tire... Can Shannon and Jeremiah make a love connection when they work next door to each other?

Shannon Bell has been the owner's assistant at Your Tidal Forever for five years. She's content in her single life and fearful of ever having an intimate relationship with a man due to previous abuse. She sees Jeremiah Yeates in line to get coffee every morning, and sure, he's the drop-dead doctor who works next door to her wedding planning office. But actually starting a relationship with him? Then the owner at Your Tidal Forever starts training Shannon to take over the whole business. Combined with her still-healing wounds from the past, can Shannon and Jeremiah make it to their own beach wedding? Or will their happily-ever-after go out with the tide?

MY TAKE
Shannon and Jeremiah are both really likeable people. Their connection is almost immediate, and you could ask yourself why it took them so long to find each other. Well, the answer is simple: they weren't ready yet. They've both been hurt in past relationships enough to have been traumatized by the experience, and hers in a physical way as well as emotional. They both needed the time to heal, so when they finally do actually meet (they've seen each other getting coffee at the same shop for a year), they're ready.

Almost. But they're perfect for each other, so the bumps along that realization is worth it. And the dog is awesome!

Shannon and Jeramiah have been seeing each other in line at the coffee shop and working next door to each other for almost two years and Jeramiah has been crushing on her for almost that long. Now he gets a chance to talk to her because when he gets out of the coffee shop she is trying to change a flat tire. He tries to help but her spare is not good either. He gives her a ride to work. He finally asks her out on a date. As they get to know each other they find they have a lot in common and he admits to his crush. Shannon is then more busy at work because she is being groomed to take over the business someday. When they are supposed to spend the weekend together but Shannon doesn't show up Jeramiah leaves after waiting all day for her. Then he decides that she doesn't have time for him so lets her know that. Will they be able to work things out she that she can still work to take over the company and spend time with him or will she have to choose one or the other?

Shannon and Jeremiah are a difficult pair to read. They’ve both got some pretty extensive traumas in their pasts that affect the way they interact with other people, especially in a romantic relationship. I loved that most of the time, these two were very careful with one another’s feelings. Because it’s a complete mess when they aren’t being quite so considerate. I adored Jeremiah. My heart broke for him every time he wasn’t feeling his best self. I know I should have had the same feelings even more intensely for Shannon, but somehow, I felt blocked from her. And when everything goes sideways, she’s not the character who has my full sympathy. I have to say, I really appreciated that this book spotlights the value of therapy (and therapy animals) for good mental health.

Sweet clean romance.

The main characters in this book were both likable and I cheered them on for success. Both of them give the appearance of being capable and strong but underneath they each are carrying baggage that makes them feel insecure. They have to learn to set aside the masks they wear so they can move on in life with healthy relationships.

I loved the supportive family systems they each had as well as the supportive coworkers. And Herc the dog was a highlight in this story. Reading about him almost made me want to get a dog. But just almost. ha.

Sex: references to a previous sexual assault from the abusive ex boyfriend. Not graphic.
Language: no
Violence: sexual assault occurred years before the book begins.

Elana has created a beautiful setting for her cast of believable characters who live ordinary lives. They face problems, everyday routine & insecurities just like all of us. Where we live doesn't matter, we still make our lives by how we react to the curves life throws us.
Shannon has been beaten down by how a previous boyfriend has abused & misused her that she is so scared she doesn't know how to see past it to what might be on the other side.
Jeremiah is a wonderful guy who wants to give Shannon all the time she needs to adjust and go on with life but he can't do it for her.
I LOVE the realization that Shannon comes to and how she is able to move beyond her past.
I received an ARC copy of this story and have enjoyed the chance to again visit Getaway Bay.

Shannon and Jeremiah

Shannon has worked at Your Tidal Forever for five years. She knows how to organize and pull together every aspect for a wedding. She also Luke's her coffee. So much so she has it timed to show up there every morning when it isn't terribly busy.

Jeremiah is a child psychologist. He's been working up the nerve to ask Shannon out for a year now. When she ends up with a flat tire, the doctor becomes her white knight.

After her tumultuous past, Shannon questions everything the doc says. She constantly feels like he's trying to counsel her. With her past can he get her to move on and give their relationship a chance?~

I had a free copy of this book, but this is my honest and voluntary opinion. Shannon Bell works for a wedding planning service and gets coffee every morning at the same shop. Jeremiah times his day to see Shannon at the coffee shop hoping for a chance to ask her out. When she has a flat tire, he takes her to work, and the opportunity arises. She hasn’t dated in a number of years because of a bad relationship. This heartwarming book’s plot includes working through difficulties, trust, and finding out how to be happy. A great read!

Shannon and Jeremiah frequent to same coffee shop. She has noticed him and he has a secret crush on her. They very cautiously begin dating because both have emotional scars that have been difficult to heal. Add in stresses from jobs, they have a difficult time in their relationship.

I liked both of these characters. Their situation could be a real life story.

I enjoyed the book and I would recommend it.

As always, Elana has done a great job with this book.
When you mix a wedding planner, a doctor, a coffee shop and a flat tire together you get something that you want to last a lifetime. However, what happens when both Shannon and Jeremiah have baggage? A violent attack and being 'almost' left at the altar make both Shannon and Jeremiah apprehensive about a relationship.

Well done characters, good story. Just enough will they-won't they to make the story interesting.
Ms. Johnson gives just enough description for the reader to visualize the scene, but not enough to bog down the pacing of the story.

Loved the inclusion of the animals!

I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.

Another great love story set in Getaway Bay. I loved Shannon and Jeremiah’s sweet story! Both have things in their past that they have worked really hard to overcome. But a new relationship brings up old fears and they both have to work through those. Hercules the therapy dog is a great added touch! Another hit by Elana Johnson.

You're a wedding planner on the way to big meeting and get a flat time. Who stops to help but the good looking doctor whose office is near yours. Both are healing. Him from having fiance leave three weeks before your wedding. She has lots extra baggage from abusive relationship. Then there's the therapy dog.

Patience Always works for the Best

Jeremiah and Shannon both exercised patience, especially Jeremiah. Shannon had been through an incredibly horrific marriage and life beforehand. Anyone that has been in that position before needs an abundance of patience and understanding which Jeremiah displayed, caring for her and working with her to learn to trust again. Excellent Book

This was a good story with characters that both had personal past issues to work through. Through lots of trial and error they were able to find their happily ever after. This is a sweet, clean romance.

A story about two people with emotional scars that still haven't healed. Forgiveness to others and to ourselves is often so very hard. I felt like I was "there" and fully engaged with the characters. You will feel so much during and after reading this sweet romance.

Sweet and romantic

Shannon and Jeremiah have secretly been crushing on each other, then one day Shannon gets a flat tire and Jeremiah helps. The characters are very well written and come some very real flaws. The story is sweet and romantic.

Shannon's past relationship issues continue to hinder her personal interactions with men. Jeremiah finally works up the courage to ask Shannon out but is getting mixed signals from her. Shannon also has a poor self image. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

This novel was okay, not the best that I have read but definitely not the worst. I enjoyed this book for the majority of the storyline but towards the end I felt it was too drawn out. I wish they could have wrapped it up a little sooner, I feel like it would have worked out better.

A great read

I related so much to Shannon and was impressed with the detail put into being a survivor of a rape attempt and still keeping the book upbeat. It's a great story, I enjoyed the characters and the plot. Keep them coming!

Love this series

I like that each book in this series has recurring characters but different main characters and storyline so you can read one or the whole series. The characters are great and really drew me in to the story. I highly recommend these books.
