Quick Summary: Abel is Claire's pseudo big brother, although he's never seen her or treated her like a sister. His abusive father (also the town Sheriff and highly respected) sort of took her in when she was ten and Claire looks up to the Sheriff and sees him as her savior.
He did, after all, offer her a place to hang out when her drugged out mother serviced "clients" out of their small trailer. When her mom OD's and Claire is placed in a home, the Sheriff's house becomes even more of her home.
But then the Sheriff dies. Abel is left with the guilt and shame of what his father did to while also trying to bridge the gap between him and Claire, who is spiraling out of control. His dream of finally getting out of this small minded town is almost within reach but Claire sees his dream as a betrayal and refuses to let him go. The only person she has left.
This story was such a twisted journey.
I honestly can say this is 100% outside my comfort zone BUT I still got sucked into this crazy upside down OTT story.
Its not safe and it ends on a cliffy (hope there is a part two soon!) but these characters will pull you in and have you mad wondering the who, what and why of it all until they finally reveal it all and you're left hooked!
Abel, he wants to be the good guy but thinks his past makes him less than. He is ashamed of his own wants and desires and resents/envies Claire for her blatant disregard for anyone’s opinion but her own. He definitely is a character you will want to root for. He seems to get knocks left and right in this book and I really hope he's alpha instincts kick in and he owns it. Not just to himself and to Claire but to the rest of town too!
Then there is Claire. She is definitely a morally gray character and she is a bit twisted but (always a but!) she also has potential to meet Abel half way. Idk if she’s a lost cause but I hope Abel’s acceptance and love will show her she’s also worthy of a happy healthy relationship, kinks and flaws and all. She has a destructive personality and there are a lot of things she f*cks up intentionally that will have you wanting to slap some hard won sense into her but there is also a lot of bat sh!t crazy stuff that she had to go through as a child that has shaped her mentality and it's going to be hard to read about. Homegirl needs some TLC and a whole lot of therapy! But I still want her to be happy 😬 Lucky for her, Abel is definitely the type that can dish out the sweet as well as the bit of dark pleasure. Plenty to keep Claire happy 😉
That’s probably the die hard romantic in me that despite everything that happened in Part 1, is still madly shipping these two misfits together, but that is why I hope there is a part two coming soon. I want both these troubled MCs to find redemption and love, against all odds because after everything else they’ve lived through, they deserve someone to love them unconditionally.
This will have triggers for some readers such as cheating, sexual assault, death of a parent and quasi-incest (not blood related), self harm, drinking/drug use and an MC who is a masochist.
Heat Level: 4/5 🔥🔥🔥🔥

—>>> The small-town characters and situations were well characterized and believable as the story unfolded. I would be interested to see where Abel and Callie would go from here next, as what they have discovered in each at her is something tangible and worth exploring.
OMG! I absolutely loved this very dark and twisted, enemies-to-lovers romance telling the story of two very complex and tortured souls, Abel and Callie. Callie has been ‘living’ with the Troy family since she was 10 years old when Sheriff Troy rescued her from her drug addict mother. Little did she know of the Sheriff’s sinister intentions and Abel comes to her rescue with devastating consequences.
What a fabulous, captivating and intriguing tale. I absolutely flew through the pages of this novella, I couldn’t put it down. It’s a very dark, depraved, cruel and deliciously twisted story that I thoroughly enjoyed. There are a few triggers including drug abuse, attempted sexual assault, cheating and self harm so please be wary if this affects you. Otherwise, a really great read that ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. Can’t wait for part 2 of this deliciously dark and depraved tale.
I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
