This book seems like it would be great for beginners, it may not be so enticing for people who have already made a couple of embroidery projects. The first half of the book is supplies, what tools are for what purpose, a couple of pages on stitches - all the basics. The second half of the book is patterns, many of which are botanical in design. There were a few patterns that I did note down for later: the plain cotton tee two way, blackwork-inspired tunic (LOVE!), greenhouse backpack (an interesting concept), and the romantic rose bralette (also LOVE!). The tunic and bralette I think are gorgeous and would love to make them as-is, the other two patterns are more conceptually inspiring but I'm not sure what I would do with them exactly so I'm not sure if I'd ever really make them. But for me, the tunic and the bralette are something different and bold that I don't often see in embroidery books - those two patterns would be cause for me to revisit this book.
Note to self: This was a library borrow - borrow again for blackwork tunic & bralette embroidery!
I want to make everything in this book. I appreciate the encouragement for slow fashion by refreshing your own closet or thrifted items. The patterns are gorgeous. It kind of stinks that a couple of patterns are split in half by the binding, but it might not matter. Affordable, simple shopping lists for the projects. I'll check back to adjust the rating if I need to after making some of these, but they all seem straightforward enough
I read this just to admire the photographs, but the instructions are very clear and written accessibly for people who are new to embroidery and wouldn't be able to troubleshoot things themselves. There are also patterns in the back.
I have followed Alexandra’s Etsy shop for many years and have admired their raw talent and passion for their work. I was very excited when I learned that Alexandra was writing a book and sharing their talent with the world. The first thing I noticed about this book (after getting past the gorgeous front/back photos on the hardcover) is how much care, creativity, and passion was put into its creation. While the book’s main purpose is to take the reader on a journey of creativity, this book is so much more than that. Alexandra shares about their personal connection to embroidery, and each project is introduced with a personal touch (in the form of a short story/memory of the author) related to why Alexandra decided to include that specific project in their book. The beginning of the book includes detailed “how-to” information making this book appealing to newbies and advanced stitchers alike (spans about 35 pages). Each project comes with the patterns to complete (traced from the end of the book), and step-by-step instructions (with visuals to help with colour selection/placement of floss) on creation of the specific work. While my initial motivation in purchasing this book was to explore the world of embroidery and to create, this book is a piece of artwork in itself and will appeal to those who don’t have desire to craft. "Non-crafty" individuals will enjoy the incredible photography of Alexandra’s work and calming sense that each page through well selected colour scheme and fonts. I further appreciate that there is diversity reflected in the authors choice of models. 5/5
I liked it! Lots of pictures, easy to understand directions and advice. I’ll eventually jump more into embroidery, and I’ll probably pick this book up again when I do!
I made the moon design for a patch as my first ever embroidery project! instructions were clear and easy to follow, lots of cool designs to make in the future :)
I received a copy of the Embroidered Closet as a gift, and I am loving it. I've tried to learn sewing, knitting, and embroidery before. I love my mom but she wasn't a great teacher for crafts that came quite naturally to her. Enter this book: the diagrams and written instructions make it easy to follow the stitches. The patterns are fun and I would say there's something for everyone (seasons, floral, Halloween). I appreciate that the author emphasizes upcycling in a way that's genuine and demonstrates her passion for her craft and the planet. I realize I'm leaving this review on Amazon, but I appreciate that this gift supported a local author and small business. I'm looking forward to sitting down with my cat, a warm tea, and embroidering the witchy dress for next Halloween... And then I'll see where I go from there
Where has this book been all my life?! It’s EXACTLY the embroidery book I’ve been searching for. Why do I love it so? Where to begin…
- it’s such a satisfying size - hardcover is a nice touch - promotes up-cycling and offers a sustainable approach to fashion - the photographs are GORGEOUS - beautiful colour palettes - instructions are clear and easy to understand - easy to navigate essential info - fresh take on patterns! - appropriate for all skill levels - FUN PROJECTS
You can tell that EVERY detail of this book was thoughtfully decided. I am INSPIRED!! This is also a book I’d buy as a gift for a loved one, and I’ll recommend it to anyone who will listen. The author and artist, Alexandra Stratkotter, should be so proud of this endeavour! This book itself is a work of art.
The cover of this book reads "Modern Hand-stitching for upgrading and up cycling your wardrobe". This is a superb description of the book. The author gives clothing examples that range from jeans, to a sweater to a bra to a cap and even sneakers. This was very inspiring visually. One can picture clothing items one can dress up or cover a tear or stain to both stretch the use of the garment and make it one of a kind beautiful. I found the tools and materials chapter well laid out and thorough. The shopping list also helped to illustrate what one needs. I highly recommend this book for both learning and inspiration.
If you're looking to get started or to learn more about embroidery then The Embroidered Closet cannot be passed up! As far as hobby books go I haven't seen a more detailed and instructive one yet. I am a woodworker by trade and have many hobby books but this gift for my wife honestly impressed me. The instructions and projects are just so clear that I can see myself doing them. There are so many words of wisdom in this book that I'm sure any skill level would feel comfortable tackling these projects! I love my hobby books and I can't wait to see how my wife enjoys this one. What a triumph!
Nice photography but the information is pretty basic and, frankly, doesn't read as someone who has a ton of sewing experience because lots of shortcuts or hints were missed. There are also weird misspelling that weren't edited out. That said, this is a good book for beginners but as someone with more experience I wished a greater range of embroidery style and subject matter would have been shown. The author mentions (often) that she prefers an un-ironed look but, jeez, I think the photos would have been much improved with some pressing!
As a new embroiderer, clear and complete instructions are vital to my stitching success. This book offers that and more. Along with a great selection of patterns and a stitch guide, the author included information on what fabric types are best for stitching and even a guide to thrifting (which is where I'll likely begin until I feel confident enough to stitch on some of my nicer clothing). Well done, Alexandra!
This book was beautifully photographed and illustrated, but the fabric section was filled with inaccurate details that made me wonder if I could trust the rest of the book. I don’t think any of these errors would keep one from doing the projects, however. The designs were beautiful and inspiring. I liked many of them.
My baseline rating is three stars and I go up or down from there. I took off a star because of the fabric chapter.
Okay, it's time for the rekindling of my embroidery habit; I just detangled all my thread. My favorite dress got stained and it's getting a moon. Those old t-shirts? Snakes and moths. It's time.
This book is so intuitive and helpful and I want to buy it, I think, instead of just having it on loan from the library. I think it would also be nice if the patterns in this book were available in PDF form online. I need to get a hold of some transferring fabric.
I’m somewhat reluctant to embroider clothing as I’m always afraid that it will make the garment less versatile. However, her designs are so beautiful that I’m about to comb through my closet for things I don’t wear very often, to see if embroidery might transform them. Also, I often find embroidery designs a bit too itsy-poo; these are contemporary. Very worthwhile book to own, both for the designs it contains, and inspiration.
Alex's book is an amazing resource for those who want to embroider. She goes through everything you need to know about tools needed, different fabrics, tips for thrifting, and there is a wonderful stitch guide! There are a variety of projects with instructions and patterns to use, including shoes, backpacks and clothing! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in embroidery!
A must read for anyone interested in picking up the craft of embroidery (especially if you want to embroider on clothing). Beautiful photos, helpful instructions (and patterns), and advice on everything you need to get started. Plus, Alex’s voice is warm and relatable, and I love the creativity and overall message - definitely pick this one up!
Excellent visuals. Loved the patterns and would put them on anything. It was especially cool to incorporate seasons in designs. Best part is even the beginner of beginners could try these! It has wonderful instructions on sewing techniques, tips to thrift, and knowledge on fabrics, thread, etc. Just stock full adorable, actually-possible-to-do designs!
This is a great book to gain embroidery inspiration from. It is a good starting place for beginners, with clear instructions and a description of how to do the stitches used in the projects. The projects in this book are super cute and would appeal to those with more experience in embroidery as well!
Beautiful book! Easy to follow instructions! Stunning designs for both beginner and experienced stitcher! I loved the information on different fabrics and stabilizers! I feel way more confident now when embroidering my clothing!
Used one of the patterns for a bookmark, but I haven't ended up using any of the designs on actual clothing. Hoping to come back to it at some point, I just realized I'm not super into embroidery on clothes!
This book is so wonderful for anyone interested in embroidery, whether in clothes or other fabrics. The photos are beautiful and the instructions are so detailed. Highly recommend!
These are pretty designs and ideas but wouldn't ever spend the time on it truthfully. The book is well written and can be picked up by the total embroidery neophyte.
I’ve followed Alexandrea’s work for the last few years. She’s so talented and creative. Her work is inspiring for creatives and also for giving mended clothes new life.
I’ve always loved making Alexandra’s patterns and it’s so wonderful to have them all in this book! The perfect resource for embroiderers at any skill level who want to upcycle their closets.
A cute book of ideas for upcycling and adding personal touches to clothing. good for inspiration and has enough of the basic ideas and skills to be helpful for a beginner.
