Outer Banks: Dead Break: An Original Novel Based on the Hit Netflix Series

Rate this book
The Pogues hit the beach in another action–packed original YA novel based on the hit Netflix show, Outer Banks

The waves are off the hook, and Pope and the other Pogues are betting big on Kiara blowing the Kook competition out of the water. What could possibly go wrong?

It's summer in the OBX, and a big surfing competition is bringing in pro surfers from around the world to Kildare Island, along with plenty of Kooks and tourists. Meanwhile, a storm has delivered massive waves, making for perfect--yet challenging-surfing conditions. But Kiara, who has been training, is up for the challenge. As for Pope, he just started his summer internship at the city morgue—his dream job!

When Kiara strikes up a flirtation with one of the pro surfers, Pope, John B, and JJ can't help but get a little jealous at the attention she receives. Meanwhile, the visiting surfers are treating Pope's dad, Heyward, like some kind of hero, but he won't explain why. When one of the professional surfers washes up dead on the beach, everyone assumes he got crushed by a wave. But Pope, Kiara, and the rest of the Pogues aren't so sure.

I would be lying if I said I didn't like this. This was so much fun to read. Especially when you're a big fan of outer banks. The plot of this book matched the series so incredibly good. If they made this into another season, it would definitely pass the vibe!

My thoughts on this book are a little complicated, so let’s start with all the things about it that I really loved! It’s fun, it feels like OBX, and when the characterization was on point, it was really, really on point. Pope’s commentary on John B and JJ’s relationship - which he describes as two brothers more than friends - was really great to see, as well as his acknowledgment that he has so much to be thankful for that John B and JJ don’t have, and that Kie should be more grateful for as well. It’s even brought up that JJ is literally starving, and I think that’s something that should be brought up even more.

That being said, I have a fair number of critiques too. In general, the characterization was all over the place. Pope was written to be more of a dork than he is in the show, and Kie’s feminism/activism is significantly more prominent than we ever see it in the show too. In one paragraph, the characterization will be spot on and absolutely perfect, and in the next, it’s just super off and everyone feels very OOC.

Having Kiara be the biggest surfer of the pogues and want to be a professional surfer did not make sense. She has never once in the show expressed a desire to surf professionally. It’s always been JJ who’s been described as both the best surfer and the one who loves it the most. Having JJ have some moral objection to surfing in competitions was incredibly bizarre and out of character. It would have made much more sense for him to have wanted to compete but have been unable to due to either injuries sustained from his dad or an inability to pay a sign up fee. That would’ve let Kie still be the focus and let JJ actually stay in character. In general, Kie is just a little obnoxious in this book. Sometimes that felt OOC, sometimes it didn’t, just depending on the context.

Another super bizarre choice was to have Rafe be a fan of metal music. Absolutely not. There is no way that he doesn’t listen exclusively to Drake and other artists that upper class white frat boys listen to, and nothing else. I know that’s super minor and inconsequential, but as a massive metal fan myself, I just couldn’t let that slide.

The actions sequences were just not well written. I can forgive the writing in the surfing sequences, since I’m assuming that the author is not a surfer and thus just doesn’t have the experience to write a drawn out surfing scene in a way that other non-surfers can really follow or picture, but the action sequences at the climax of the novel just weren’t well done. Similarly, everything involving the police in this was not well written either. As a police officer myself, I was cringing the entire time at the horrible police work and absolute ineptitude of every single officer. Either it was intentional to make the Kildare County Sheriff’s Office the most incompetent, bumbling, uncaring, and poorly trained police department known to man, or the author just didn’t take any time at all to research actual police procedure when it comes to literally anything.

Similarly to the first prequel book, I did not care about the romance between Kie and Gabriel. He’s not in the show at all or ever mentioned, so there’s no suspense to the relationship, since you know it can’t end in a perfect happily ever after.

All of that being said, I did enjoy the book, and I am glad to have read it. Although I prefer the first prequel book, Lights Out, to this one, this was still a fun read, and something that any massive OBX fan would enjoy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Over all a great book and I recommend this to anyone who likes the show or have enjoyed reading the other Obx book.

There’s a few things in the book that I still don’t quite understand.

‼️MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS‼️

1. The book cover has a picture of Sarah Camren resting her arm on John B’s shoulder indicating that they are in a relationship. If you don’t already know they do date in the show, but in this book she appears somewhere in the first 4 chapters and is never seen again. Same goes for “Outer Banks Light Out”. She is shown on the book cover and only appears in the first or second chapter. I’m confused on why this is the way that it is even though I understand that they may have put her there because of her relationship with John B in the show. But in both books she is still dating Topper. 🤷‍♀️

2. In an early chapter Kiara entered a surf competition and in Popes POV she is pulled out of the water unconscious. The story then switched off to Sarah and Gabriel sitting with each other. They then start the next chapter Kiara’s POV with her being crushed by a wave in the water. The way that she was pulled out of the water in Popes POV felt very unnecessary or missed placed. It’s very odd and it confuses me as the reader trying to understand where both Pope and Kiara are coming from.

3. Unlike “OuterBanks Lights Out” where JJ and John B both go on an adventure together, Pope and Kiara are both going in different directions. (if that makes sense) Pope’s main POV is based on him working at the morgue with his mentor Dr. Anderson or Dr. A. Where Kiara’s POV is based on the surf competition and her helping Gabriel uncover what happened to his now dead best friend Cole. The book made this feel very messy and kind of everywhere especially in the beginning as where towards the end they kind of get together to help Gabriel.

4. As for John B and JJ they felt like tag alongs, but in the other book Kiara and Pope were barely mentioned.

I do want to point out that both of the books are written by different authors, so it is not a series therefore you can read any book first, and they both had a different perspective on the show.

Overall this book was pretty good, but felt kind of messy and all over the place. I do recommend it to any Outer Banks fan. I will say the book was very easy to picture in your head which I love because I’m a visual learner 😝

Another good prequel in the Outer Banks series told from Kie and Pope’s point of view. Love Pope’s character and this reveals more about him than you’ve seen in the tv shows. Really cool adventure that broadens the characters’ story to give you a better idea of who they are when watching the show. Good read!

I was skeptical after the first tie in novel, which had some nice work around the theme of fathers, but otherwise missed for me.

THIS is what I wanted an OBX tie in novel to be. Solid characterization, strong emotional work that accounted for the varied relationship dynamics between the Pogues, and some damn good writing all made the most of a plot that was set prior to season one and was therefore necessarily limited.

Loves:
-Kiara’s emphasis on surfing
-her rant on toxic masculinity/patriarchy WHILE KIDNAPPING RAFE
-Every moment of JJ & JB banter during said kidnapping
-the thoughtful way her relationship with each of the guys AND her parents was tackled
-When she said she was jealous of Pope because both his parents were pogues and both his parents were also black, I was like SOMEONE SAID IT.
-I also appreciated that there were things she and Pope understood about each other because of being black that JB & JJ couldn’t
- also that Pope acknowledged there were things Kie couldn’t understand because she grew up on Figure 8.
-The scientific method conceit in Pope’s narration was a nice thematic turn, and perfectly nerdy
-the fact that Pope and Kie were the POV characters, but we still got PLENTY of scene time with John B and JJ.
-Pope’s entire sequence about known unknowns and unknown unknowns and JJ just being like “we’ve lost him to a logic spiral”
-Honestly, loved how much attention and care was paid to JJ’s character, from his dialog to his trauma and guilt over what happens. Also, the moments where Pope notices his violent reactions, Kie observes that anger is JJ speak for sad, John B handing over the HMS Pogue’s controls to JJ in the gnarly weather, and when someone questions how JJ knows what the weather is going to do, I loved the way John B was like, “IDK, but he’s usually right.” Love that emotionally stunted little redneck pirate.
-Loved Pope back in his “major crush on Kie” era. So pure.
-The fear of losing his friends as their interests diverged was so relatable.
-LOVE that Kie got the guy (temporarily) and the other pogues pretending not to be watching.
-the boys all like WHY CAN’T WE HATE THIS VERY DEcenT DUDE?
-Kiara’s mental John B and JJ teasing her about her crush. Spot on banter.
-Kiara’s mental Pope NOT teasing her.

I had a few things I disagreed with a bit, but honestly they were slight enough that I don’t feel like taking off a star for it. Mostly, I didn’t think Mike Carrera would hate Kie surfing, especially given that, in the show, he talks about hitting the break, and he seems to soften when she’s describing how no one at the Kook academy cared about surfing. I got the sense that surfing was a thing she and her dad had in common. Small enough thing that I chalk it up to a different read on that character. The other bit I will nitpick is the fact that JJ wasn’t interested in the surfing competition. I understand the reasoning, and I do actually love that for JJ, but I do think he’s probably sitting a little low on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to so easily blow off a competition for something he’s really good at. I feel like that feral little scammer would be like “FREE MONEY. For SURFING. And I get to make Rafe eat my board? Yes.” The only thing I see stopping him would be an entry fee.

But those are minor, and have more to do with different character reads than any failure on Jay Cole’s part.

I listened to the audio, but I’m also grabbing the ebook, because there are a few passages I’d like to read again.

I’m also planning to check out more of Cole’s books. Love his writing!

I loved this book. I pre ordered it months before it came out and was so excited when it finally arrived. This book was just what needed to get back into the outer banks vibe. I loved getting to experience this story. I felt just like I was watching the show when I was reading it. I Hope we get more OBX books soon!

Outer Banks: Dead Break by Jay Coles is a young adult mystery novel with snips of romance and action inspired by the popular Netflix series Outer Banks. The book takes place in the familiar beachy town setting that fans of the show would recognize, filled with drama, sun, and waves. Even though it is connected to the series, the story still is its own standalone mystery for readers who enjoy face paced novels. The plot follows the Pougues during a busy summer in the Outer Banks, where a big surfing competition is happening. Kiara is focused on surfing and proving herself, while Pope is working on his future, starting an internship that puts him close to real crime scenes for the first time. When a professional surfer is found dead on the beach, most people think it was just a tragic accident caused by waves. However, the pogues start to catch on that something isn't adding up, and they decide to investigate what really happened. Their curious minds lead them into a mystery far more serious than they expected. Overall, I thought this book was super enjoyable and a super easy read. The writing style is simple and straightforward, which makes it go quickly and keeps the story moving at any time in the book. I liked how the chapters switch between The two main characters' perspectives, Pope, and Kiara. It pretty much provides better information into both their personalities and struggles.. And by far the setting was my most favorite part of the book. Because I watched the netflix series, I knew a lot about where they were at and knowing that made it seem more realistic and interesting for me. This plot is not very complex, but is very entertaining and fits well within the YA Genre. If I had to rate this book it would definitely earn 5 out of 5 stars. If you are into thrillers, YA, a little bit of romance, action, and mystery, this book will be perfect for you. After reading this book, It was so good that I had to pick up the second one! So if you ever watched the Netflix series or love books based off of teenage life, pick this one up and give it a read!

Outer Banks: Dead Break is set during a big surfing contest. People from all over the world are coming to the Outer Banks for the contest. Kie a local starts a flirtation with one of the out-of-town surfers. This makes her friends John B, Pope, and JJ jealous. As tenions from the contest rise someone ends up dead. Pope has an internship at the coroner's office. The coroner rules the death an accident but Pope does not think that is the case. Pope and Kie are determined to find out the truth and solve the murder.

I love the show Outer Banks and knew I was going to love this book. This book has nothing to do with the events that happen in the show. It is a side story with the characters from the show. I do think that you do need to watch the show before reading this. Even though it is not connected to the events of the show it is helpful to watch before so you can know the characters. I will say it was a little odd listening to the audiobook because the narrators sound nothing like the characters. That did take me a bit to get used to. But once I got over that this book was so really good. Of course, there is a murder because this is a book based on the Outer Banks. This was everything I could want in a mystery and thriller book. I would highly suggest this one if you love the show like I do.

Thank you so much Libro.fm for the ALC of this book.

While I do love the Outer Banks show, this book didn't live up to it. I just didn't feel Kiara's character in this book and the mystery wasn't really deep enough for me. I like the idea of incorporating new characters in the books that aren't on the show and a more look into Pope's job, and the twist in that. Overall the story needed more depth and to dig into what the show has given: raw adventure, its' real characters, betrayal, mystery, and the overall treasure hunt aspect. Wanted to like it.

This definitely felt more juvenile compared to the show but it was still fun to read. For anyone who is a fan of the show I think you'd enjoy it.
- Pope was made to be more dorky and awkward than he is in the show.
- The italics with questions and hypothesis meant to represent Pope's inner thoughts were not necessary in my opinion.
I liked that they gave us more of a backstory to Heyward Senior. I thought it worked and made sense. Still as rambunctious and wild as I would expect it to be just kinda different from the show.

I gave this book 4.75 stars

This book was so much better than the first Outer Banks book. As weird as it may sound, I absolutely enjoyed all of Pope’s explanations of the coroner’s procedures and processes when taking care of a body and then identifying a cause of death. As a person who grew up in a landlocked state, I also loved learning about paddle-in, tow-in surfing, and all that entails. I really liked getting a little bit of back story for Heyward it really makes his concern for Pope being on the water more understandable. Screw the Kooks! Pogues forever!

Outer Banks, the Netflix series, is one of my favorite series all time. I love the OBX, the pogues, the mystery, the surfing, the overall vibes. So when I found out there were OBX books, I was completely sold.

When I picked up this book, I wanted it to feel like the series, and it totally did. It could easily be a couple episodes in saison 1. The pogues are just like you remember them, the vibes are immaculate, the surfing exceptionnel, and even Gabriel could easily be a pogue in the series as well.

First 5 stars read of the year ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love the Netflix series Outer Banks, and was so excited to be gifted this book for Christmas last year. Overall, it was a good read. I think there was just a bit too much character building in the beginning, as the bulk of the story didn’t start until a good 120-150 pages in. I also thought it ended rather abruptly. It is a pretty predictable book from the beginning, and maybe aimed toward a younger demographic, but I enjoyed it overall.

Audiobooked: This was both a great Outer Banks story and a great story in general! It was so much better than the first one! I already loved Pope, and this story made me appreciate Kiara a lot more. I hope this book series will continue! A book on Cleo would be cool!

If you liked this book, then I suggest:

I loved reading this book so much, I was hooked and could not put it down. It was really interesting and had a really good plot. It wasn’t like the show but had the same characters plus extra characters too. I would highly recommend this book ! I love the show so I was so excited to read this book. It was easy to follow and enjoyable. It mostly focuses on Pope and Kie with some extra characters, John B and JJ are in it too though.

This book was not as good as the first. It was very slow starting out. The mystery of the missing surfer was spoiled on the back of the physical book so I was kinda frustrated with that. It was a slow start but it ends stronger than it started.

It's very YA writing, still a good book. I thunk they didn't really capture jj tho. He loves surfing and is the best surfer at least in the show. He also would love to travel the world surfing and the book contradicts that a lot

This book was amazing to say the least! The plot twist got me and I loved the way it ended. I think that the way they portrayed the characters was very accurate with the characters in the show. And I found myself laughing out loud because of Pope and Kiara’s internal dialogue!
