Heart Hassle #4

Sheer Cupidity

Rate this book
What happens when a cupid falls in love?

From the international best-selling author Raven Kennedy, comes a new fantasy romance about cupids and fae, filled with humor, heart, and heat.

I am great at my job.

And I'm not just saying that—I have the statistics to back it up. Being a cupid is my passion. Being the best is just the dollop of pink icing on the heart cake.

But none of that matters when I find myself caught up in a battle in the fae realm, helping my boss. I'm about to get hit with a power blast strong enough to end my immortal life when something happens. A fae male steps in front of me and takes the hit.

Belren dies, right there in front of my eyes.

Aimless in my guilty grief, I lose my footing as the perfect cupid. And footing is very important when you're trying to have a superior bow and arrow stance.

Finally fed up with the constant cloud of regret, I got back to where it started—the fae island where Belren died. Yet I don't get closure. Instead, I find him.

But the horned, handsome, and entirely see-through male doesn't remember me at all. And that's when I know that the fates are out to mess up my orderly life.

Because the truth is, Belren haunted me long before he ever became a ghost.

Now, it seems we both have unfinished business.

Author's Note: This is a spin-off from the original Heart Hassle series. It is a standalone m/f romance, but has some continuing story arcs and familiar characters from the first 4 Cupidity books. There is explicit language and romance, and is intended for ages 18+.

✅ 2 POVs
✅ Characters
✅ Some scenes with Emelle and her family
✅ Sexual tension
✅ Some smut (not a lot though)
✅(🆗) Pace
✅(🆗) Plot
❗️❗️Mild spoilers about the romance in the review (but then again, this reads almost like a rom-com so you should know what to expect…)

“Taking my deathplace with you so I can tag along. Let’s see if it works. Now quick, scoop up some of my muck and fill your quiver.”
My nose scrunches. “That sounds dirty.”
When he flashes me a wicked smile, I immediately get flustered again. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

Once again jumbled, I clear my throat. “Anyway, your muck has now soiled my quiver.”
He snickers.
“That’s not what I meant.”

A few years after the final battle in Crimes of Cupidity, Lex is still grieving the death of Belren, and she has survivor syndrome big time. Needing closure, she decides to return to the island where the final battle happened, only to find a very familiar ghost with white hair and horns. Belren has been stuck near his death place for years, and strangely, he managed to remain coherent and does not behave like any other ghosts Lex came across. Wanting to find a way to help him find closure, Lex asks Emelle to help her find a solution to un-ghost him, and while Emelle does her research, Lex and Belren embark on a quest to find Princess Soora.

The first part of the book felt longer, and overall, while I did enjoy Lex and Belren’s story I find that it dragged on in some places, and the plot was not the most developed. It felt like a lot of running around, not really knowing what the next step was, and just hoping that a solution would miraculously appear. I was also hoping to learn more about the Cupids’ world and how it works, but there was nothing really new in this book when it came to Cupids’ powers of their “society”.

Go with the flow? I laugh, because that’s absurd. I’ve never gone with the flow in my entire afterlife, not even when I got stuck in a river’s current once.

Lex is a character that I liked a lot in the trilogy, but strangely, I didn’t like her that much in this book. It is perfectly understandable, considering what happened to her, but she lost her spark from the previous books, and we were left with a rather prude and rigid cupid that felt a little boring at times. I honestly don’t have much to say about her besides that… She was not a bad main character, but she was not as interesting as in the previous books.

“We should try it again then, don’t you think? Test it out?”
I blink, my mind much slower at processing words when he’s this close. “Platonically, you mean? For science?”
Belren’s lips curl up into the most amused smirk that makes my stomach flip. “Sure. We should touch for science.”
Well, I can’t argue with things in the name of science. That wouldn’t be logical.

I fell in love with Belren in the second and third books of this series. I just love his mischievous and rogue energy, mixed with a good heart hidden deep down. I was super happy when I saw that the author wrote a spinoff about him and Lex, and thankfully, he kept his charismatic persona in this book. He felt slightly different because of the whole “you’re a ghost and have no memories” plot line, but he returned to his flirty character soon after he met with Lex again. I do think that he could have had more depth though, but on the other hand, it goes with the “no-memories” aspect of the story so it does make sense that his character is not as layered as in the previous books.

“Still breathing?”
An exhale puffs out of me. “Yep.”
“Good girl.”
Oh gods. Yep, I think I may have a praise kink.

There is sexual tension between Belren and Lex, but little smut, especially when compared to the previous books the author wrote in this series. Sure, this one was not a RH, but with a character as flirty and charismatic as Belren, I was expecting a little more. That being said, the few scenes we had were well-written, and we could feel the sexual tension between the two main characters. Lex was a little too much of a prude though, in my humble opinion of course. As a cupid, she witnessed sex countless times, and even if it’s not nearly the same as experiencing it, I would think that she was past the point of blushing because of sexual innuendos. Thankfully she still let herself enjoy life in the second half of the book and she let go of some of her Ms. Goody-two-shoes vibe because it was getting a little frustrating to see her being so oblivious or shy to Belren’s flirty comments.

“You have a beautiful family.”
She beams. “We’re an odd, loud, crazy, very messy covey, but...they’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Emelle rolls her eyes. “The last time I cried in front of him, he stripped off his shirt, shoved it in my face, and told me to cheer up because abs make everyone happy.”

Honestly, some of my favorite moments in this book were the scenes with Emelle and her family. They are so hectic and loud and messy. But at the same time, I love seeing them all together and seeing their craziness that seems to be working against all odds.

I would still recommend reading this book if you enjoyed the previous trilogy if only to get the satisfaction of seeing Belren and Lex get their HEA. But I did not enjoy it as much as Emelle’s story.

“There’s nothing but resounding love in this house, and for an overachieving cupid, it makes me both incredibly happy and inconceivably sad.”

“Still breathing?” An exhale puffs out of me. “Yep.” “Good girl.” Oh gods. Yep, I think I may have a praise kink.”

“That was...” “Dirty? Fast? Rough?” I offer. She laughs, and I swear to fuck, my heart swells at the sound. “I was going to say A plus.”

4.5 stars, 2 spice.

Ohhhh how I loved this. Raven Kennedy’s original Cupidity Series was actually my first ever reverse harem experience, so I was VERY excited for this spin-off and for the chance to explore Belren and Lex’s connection further.

Lex, as we know from prior books, is the epitome of Type A goodie two shoes. She loves love and takes her work as a Cupid very seriously, even when it isolates her from other Cupids who would rather have fun on the job. Lex is holding onto guilt about Belren, and when she goes to visit him, finds him in ghostly form.

Kinda hard to go to pound town when you’re incorporeal, so this is most definitely a slow burn—but we do get several deliciously spicy moments of fleeting corporealness and those moments are chefs kiss. Lex and Belren are pretty much opposites in every way, but they compliment each other perfectly. I loved seeing each of them grow and learn from each other, and finally start advocating for themselves as well. This was sugary sweet but in the best way, highly recommend this series + spin-off!

I had my eye on this book once I heard it was releasing on Valentine’s Day and it may have taken a long time for us to get Belren’s story but it was so worth the wait. It’s been a couple years since I read Cupidity but it’s probably one of my favorite RH reads. Even with time having passed I was pulled right back into this story so I can see why it would work as a standalone but obviously will be more enjoyable having read the prior trilogy. Lex is the best Cupid there’s ever been and she takes her job seriously. Unfortunately she’s never known love herself but loves crossing realms and creating love matches. During a battle the hero Belren sacrifices his life for Lex and the poor thing struggles so hard with guilt over this fact. She’s spent years looking for his spirit and it’s taking a toll on her until now when she vows to get over her misery and take back her life. I loved Lex, she’s such a fun character completely anal, a bit OCD and super passionate. Her word vomit and inane thoughts are also pretty hilarious making her impossibly hard not to like. When it comes to herself she’s shy and can be pretty awkward but when she’s got her quiver in her hands and love on the brain no one is safe (from an orgy 😏). I really enjoyed this book and I really enjoyed how RK brought Belren and Lex together again. This does work as a slow burn romance and it gives the characters time to get to know one another, annoy one another and if they’re lucky, they’ll find love too!

I love this book so much.

Thank you Raven for writing such a wonderful book and just WOW.

This is actually a spin off book from Heart Hassle series and boy did I laughed ?
I laughed, blushed, melted and cried which was also Sad and happy tears. I finished in a couple of days. Now I want to reread again.

This book is combination of all the tropes like angst, pain, fae, adventure, second chance, unfinished business, tension, romance.

The story was kind of continuation of previous book : Crimes of Cupidity.

About Cupid Lex and Infamous thief Belren who died saving the person he loved at the first sight. All he remebered was Pink Hair, Red Wings. He died and was sent to chose a job in afterlife but at that moment he remebered who he was, what he was and how he died. He had to chose either as Angel or Demon but he refused and demanded that he send him back. Angels had no choice but to send him back as ghost back to the place he died. He forgot everything again and wandered at his deathplace. Cupid Lex spent her six years in guilt and confusion why would someone she barely knew save her from killing blow ?? She looked for him where dead people comes to choose afterlife job but he wasn't there. She then decided to visit his place where he died to find closure. She vow to murder the person whom was the cause and he suddenly popped out of existence and materialized before her. She felt relif but it was short lived cause she came to realization at what he became. He doesn't remember her at all. Belren thought that she was the anchor before madness took over and fade away completely. They both decided to complete his unfinished business and set to start their jounrey. His goal was to search his sister who went missing in his mortal life but little did he know that Lex was also his second unfinished business before he died. There might be a chance to bring him back from his ghost form but worth the cost of her heart ???

The book writing was excellent, we would also find previous characters in couple of chapters, shameless flirt by Belren, blushing Lex, praises, some dirty talks and intimate moments.

You could also read this as standalone but you've to read Heart Hassle series so you would know what was happening. Anyways, I love this book *chef kiss*

This was pretty cute. I read books 1 & 2 of this series back in 2018, didn't love them and then never got back to it. I also read a completely separate standalone cupid book by RK that I liked and I was intrigued by the ghost aspect here so I thought I'd give this one a try without catching up on what I missed. It says it's a standalone and that's...mostly true. There's a lot of talk about some big battle and betrayals and shit that I was in the dark on. I would've liked a bit more background about how Lex and Belren knew each other/the main characters from books 1-3 and who Belren was, but I wasn't lost without it. Lex and Belren remind me a lot of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider in Tangled lol... Lex was a very goody two shoes, rule following, innocent and Belren was a swashbuckling rogue thief. Lex's good girl complex was probably the most entertaining part of this book especially with how it manifested once they started 😏👉👌
Overall a really quick easy way to pass the time.

I cannot even began to explain how much I loved this book. The heart hassle series is my favorite series from Raven and this book is her best work to date.

Lex and Belren are the perfect coupling. I love seeing how she makes their differences work together as a team and how that develops into their relationship.

This book made me feel so many different things and I was legit crying at one one. I was also smiling like a good. I couldn’t put this book down, I devoured it!

Of course there are fantastic steamy scenes. Belren is the best dirty talker. I just adore him!

great addition to the cupidity series!

This series will always be a favorite of mine. And I've been waiting for belren and lex's book for what feels like forever. And it didn't disappoint. Watching the love that belren has for Lex keep him tethered and never fade, it was amazing. Even when he didn't remember, he still somehow knew she was his. And he was hot af, boy can dirty talk for sure.

I have to give a warning though, because I wasn't expecting it. This is an extreme slow burn. This book is definitely all about the romance, not the sexy time. Yes, there is some definite sexual chemistry and belren can be hot af, but I felt like it was seriously lacking in the steamy scenes. One. You get one full blown bedroom scene. That's it. I will say that that's my only negative about this book. And it probably won't be a negative for a lot of people, I just prefer more steam in my books. But this is Raven Kennedy, and even with the lack of steam, the book was amazing. I LOVED seeing Emille and all of her mates again. Can't wait to see if she will make more in this series!

It can almost be read as a standalone, but I don’t think I’d recommend it. There’s a lot of characters and events from the previous novels that are talked about and referred to in this book, and I do think you’d find yourself a little lost. I did go in knowing this was a single pairing, but if you didn’t know, it’s not RH like the rest of the series.
It was missing the humour that the others had, except when Emelle and her family become involved. But as sometimes that went way over the top, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Pretty low heat levels (I think they only do the deed in the epilogue, but there’s other stuff in the lead up).
But ghost romance. Come on, you can’t not love that. It is a personal favourite of mine, and this did not disappoint.

Meh. 3.5 for creative and imaginative writing. I don't know if was the length of time from the last book to reading this one but I just didn't connect like the ones with Emelle. Lots of swirling confusion, lots of "mystery", not much connection between characters (until past 30% I think?).

Lex is a prude and I was hoping she would come apart under the right set of hands. Not sure if ghost hands were the ticket. Belren is a great anti-hero, this just didn't work for me.

Anyway, don't let this review stop you, RK is an amazing author and Cupidity and the Gild series have been great.

The last 15% made me sob like a baby. And I mean full on sobbing, like wailing so much I got a headache. But I’m so happy they finally got their happy ending, I hated that Belren died but it was worth it, and the epilogue was perfection. And even the chapter before that, what Emelle and Sev did for Lex 😭😭. I had a feeling they were up to something. And it was so nice to see Emelle, her mates, and her little hybrid children. The only thing was that the story didn’t captivate me like the first three books, I just enjoyed the end. But honestly, the last 15% made up for it. If a book can make me cry, then it was worth it.

After Belren’s death, both Belren and Lex are lost. Belren, in the physical sense since he's dead, duh. And Lex because she feels guilty for his death and she can’t find the happiness she had before he died. After some time, Lex is finally ready to go back to the fae realm and visit the one place she’s been avoiding, Belren’s death place. But when she gets there she finds something she thought she would never see, Belren’s ghost.

This book is a standalone, but their story begins in the original trilogy. So if you want some more context, it would be preferred to read those books first.

Favorite quotes/scenes:

“I knew I was intrigued by cupids when Emelle stumbled into my life, but the second I laid eyes on Lex, I was entranced.”

“I’m going to keep her. Perhaps Emelle came into my life not only to save it, but to lead me to Lex.”

“I’ve stolen a lot of things in my life. Treasures. People. Secrets. But now? I’m going for the most precious thing of all. I’m going to steal this cupid’s heart.”

“But there is one thing in the nothing. One single, solitary thing that I remember. Her. Red wings, serious face, pink hair pulled back tight. I have no idea who she was. But I remember her in this nothingness.”

Who would’ve thought a half-cupid half-bull fae would be so darn cute? “Aww,” I croon. But I’ve awwed too soon, because he suddenly drops his head, scratches his front hoof on the rug, and then starts charging at the girls as fast as his short legs can go. (This was so cute 🥹)

“You’re a ghost, so you don’t have a lot of options for companions.”
“True. But even if I did, I’d still want you.”

“Still breathing?”
“Yep.”
“Good girl.”
Oh gods. Yep, I think I may have a praise kink.

“So the next time you try to walk out on me, just remember that. You’re mine.”

“If I were a better ghost, I’d let myself be pulled away. I’d let her move on to live her life, without haunting her anymore. But I’m not. I will fight tooth and nail against the endless abyss to stay by her side.”

“If I knew then what I know now, if I knew that leaping in front of you that day meant that I would die—that I would end up right here as a ghost, with you—then I would do it all over again. Gladly.”

“I hope you’re good with me haunting you, Pinky, because I’m going to do it for as long as I can.”
“I’m good with it.”
“Good girl.”

“I’ll find you. Did you hear me, Pinky? I’ll find you.”

“Belren?”
“I told you I’d find you.” (This made me sob😭😭)

“She’s too beautiful not to watch. To think, I almost lost this chance. But I was meant to fall for her. Meant to be with her. And I wasn’t going to let a little thing like a second death take her away from me.”

Pink hair, red wings. These colors are my anchor, my lifeline.”

“And that cupid in the next room, whispering about her cupid goals? She’s mine. I stole her heart. But the best part? She stole mine right back.”

I love that the author wrote a standalone spin off from her Cupid series! It was enjoyable overall.

I always really liked Belren because he's sorta borderline antihero, with so much charm and mischievous energy. He was all that in here, but without a lot of depth. He read like any other male character in this genre rather than someone unique. I still liked him, tho. He was the reason I kept reading.

Lex is...Lex. She wasn't my favorite. Too contained, too hesitant, too fearful. She got the job done tho and was generally enjoyable, but I definitely didn't feel the connection between her and Belren. It seemed a little forced.

For an author that wrote a reverse harem series with so many sex scenes, this one only had 1 oral scene and then 1 full-on scene in the epilogue (we know how all these types of books end, this definitely isn't a spoiler). Maybe she was going for plot, story, and action more than smut, but with someone like charismatic Belren as the male lead? I definitely expected more.

This is for sure a rom-com. It was humorous, borderline annoying and cliche sometimes, but I love this world of Kennedy's and I was happy to return to this universe. This one was just a little disappointing, with a slight feeling of laziness and pandering to the audience??

Regardless, I enjoyed it. Would I recommend it? Definitely if you've read the 4 other books in this universe, but as a standalone? It's probably not worth it.

Happy reading, Goodreads fiends.

I waited patiently for this book and oh damn Raven Kennedy did not disappoint!

I may even love this more than the original series.
Lex is so loveable. The workaholic who experiences love for the first time
I really enjoyed reading about her. I must admit Emelle sometimes was a bit too over the top for my personal taste but Lex is just perfect.

And I desperately needed a book about my man Belren. I liked him since his first appearance in Bonds of Cupidity but now I’m in love with no escape in sight. The Horned Hook falls for the Cupid. I needed to hear this story since their first encounter!

I must admit I’m usually not a fan of the memory loss trope but it was done so greatly in this book! I really enjoyed the whole book! The pacing is well done, perfect length and I laughed so often!

The perfect fun paranormal romance I needed!

Lex is back and she’s grieving, guilt-ridden, and still the most Type A Cupid in the realm. A few years after the final battle in Crimes of Cupidity, she returns to the island where Belren died, hoping for closure. What she finds instead is Belren himself… sort of. He’s a ghost, stuck near his deathplace, and somehow still coherent and very much Belren.

This novella gives us dual POVs (Lex and Belren), which works well, especially since Belren’s voice is still flirty and mischievous. He’s lost his memories, but not his charisma, and watching him slowly reconnect with Lex is both sweet and frustrating. Their dynamic is opposites-attract in every way: Lex is rigid, rule-bound, and emotionally constipated; Belren is chaos, charm, and praise kink incarnate. Together, they balance each other out… eventually.

The romance is slow burn by necessity (hard to get spicy when one of you is incorporeal), but the tension is there, and the few steamy moments we get are well-earned and well-written. That said, Lex’s prudishness felt a little overplayed. She’s a Cupid. She’s seen things. Her constant flustered reactions to Belren’s innuendos made her feel more like a YA protagonist than someone who’s spent years watching mortals go at it. Thankfully, she loosens up in the second half, and we get glimpses of the Lex we loved in the original trilogy.

Plot-wise, it’s a bit of a stagnate. Lex and Belren set off to find Princess Soora while Emelle researches how to “un-ghost” him, but the journey feels more like wandering than questing. There’s not much urgency, which makes the pacing feel uneven. I also hoped for more Cupid lore, something new about their powers or society, but that thread was left untouched.

Emelle and her gang, though? Absolute scene-stealers. Every moment with them added warmth and humor, and honestly, I wouldn’t mind a novella just about their antics. Emelle’s dynamic with Lex is also a highlight to note.

In the end, Sheer Cupidity feels like a soft epilogue for fans of the series. It’s not as emotionally rich or plot-heavy as Emelle’s arc, but it offers closure. If you’ve been rooting for Lex and Belren since book two, this is worth the read.

I loved this book. I hate that Belren didn't just choose a job and ended up becoming a ghost. I hate that he wondered around for years not remembering anything. I love that Lex found him and that they were able to finish his business so he could pass on and choose a job. I love that they see Emelle and how she helps them find a way to bring him back. I love that even after he gets his second chance he still remembers Lex and I love that they end up together. I loved this series and I'm sad its over.

Sheer Cupidity is a standalone adult fantasy romance by my favorite author ever, Raven Kennedy. Though this is a standalone story, it does take place in the Cupidity/ Heart Hassle world, and while you do not need to read the first four books in the Heart Hassle series to understand and enjoy Belren and Lex's story, there is a timeline overlap and character overlap between the two. The heart Hassle series is my very favorite reverse harem series (its a rom com) and I highly recommend reading it because it is cupidly amazing! For those of you who are wondering, Sheer Cupidity starts out (timeline wise) at the end of Heart Hassle book 3, where the big battle is taking place, but the story quickly jumps ahead to a few years after the events of book 4 of the series.

Like I mentioned, it follows Lex- the most dedicated cupid there ever was, and Belren the horned hook. Belren is a fan favorite character from the Heart Hassle series and I have been waiting for years to see his story. I loved him in the original series, with his dirty mouth and sense of humor. I so badly wanted him to find love. Lex and Belren together was just as much fun as I was hoping. I don't want to say too much of the specifics of what happens in this story because there are spoilers to the original series, but their journey to track down Princess Soora, was so satisfying. It is much more about Lex and Belren interacting with each other than the actually journey, which is exactly the way I wanted it.

Raven Kennedy always does such a fantastic job with her humor. This book had me laughing out loud so many times. I was also tickled pink that we got to visit with Emelle (the original cupid) and her lovey covey (my very favorite covey!) Sylred, Evert and Ronak always crack me up!

Fans of the Heart Hassle series will love Sheer Cupidity, but fans new to Raven Kennedy's work, or those who have read her Plated Prisoner series- you need to check out the Heart Hassle series. This series made me fall head over heels in love with all of the cupids! I would personally start with Emelle's story in the first four heart hassle books, but you do not need to. Either way, be sure to grab Sheer Cupidity when it comes out on valentine's day!

P.S. We need to fookin' see Sev's story next!

The only thing that I could think about this book right after I finished it and the next day is WOW! I knew that given the background story of our characters that this would be angsty and emotional but I WASN'T EXPECTING TO CRY! WHAT THE HECK?! I was not prepared for the emotional journey that this book took me on! I will admit that for the first quarter I felt meh but that was because I just wanted Belren and Lex to finally get to each other so the true story could begin! Once they got together it was incredible, their chemistry and dialogue was perfect and delicious! Belren's cheeky and mischievous attitude paired with Lex's prim and proper personality was the perfect opposites attract couple and the banter between them both had me laughing one minute and about to self combust the next! Belren couldn't have been sweeter or more patient when it came to taking care of Lex, in more ways than one! 😉 I obviously knew that there would be some heartbreak along the way given Belren's situation but that didn't make it any easier to read! I was crying for a few pages there cause I was so heartbroken for Lex, AGAIN! But wow, that final chapter and epilogue put me right back together again! This couple really had to work for their HEA but the journey was so worth it! Thank you Raven, this book was everything I wanted and needed for them and then some! 💘
