They Have Conquered Part One

Rate this book
Based on actual people and events, THEY HAVE CONQUERED is a fictional account of an extended Mennonite family living in turn of the century Southern Russia. All individuals whose full names were used, places, and events are historically accurate. Part One covers the timespan from 1894 to early 1922. Within that short period, the lead character, Gerhardt, grows into adulthood, gets married, explores Siberia, homesteads along the Caspian Sea shoreline, is conscripted into World War One and the Revolution. Along the way, his family suffers, rejoices, and mourns.

This or similar books should be required reading. What happens when we have such an us vs. them attitude combined with drought and famine? Read to find out. Or not. It seems like we are headed in that direction now so keep on living to find out.
The author does not hold back on descriptions of executions and the atrocities of war, and I appreciate this because all too often that is glossed over. On that note, describing what starvation looks like would have been apropos.
Oh, the situational irony this book tells of. Patriarch Wiens had taken the family to the US and because of the unsettled atmosphere in the wake of labor strikes and a perceived weak central government, they return to Russia where things are familiar and ordered. After a few years of peace, the family is thrust into the political unrest of World War I and then the Revolution.
Not always an easy read, but worth it.
