Endurance: The Toby Price Story

Rate this book
The Australian bush has conjured up some crazy legends, but the rise and rise of two-time Dakar champion Toby Price is surely one of its best. Who knew that the remote town of Roto (pop. 41) would be the launching pad of one of the greatest motorsports athletes the world has seen, fit to tackle and triumph over the planet’s most gruelling endurance race?

Toby Price has lived a truly remarkable life, filled with ups, downs and every bump in the road imaginable: a childhood racing prodigy from the tender age of 2 – there was hardly a paddock that could contain him. After tearing through the junior ranks, taking out titles in both dirt track and motocross, Toby was living the dream, turning pro at 16 and joining the formidable KTM Racing team. Soon he was turning heads internationally and tapped to take on the most forbidding enduro courses the sport could throw at him.

But the clock and the elements weren’t his only adversaries. The death of his adored sister, Min; the tragic loss of mentors and rivals in the desert; countless broken bones and an accident that should have paralysed him for life – Toby’s story is a study in staying true to yourself and following your passion to its ultimate end: rain, hail or shine. The person who emerged from the crucible of so many trials is now one of the most beloved figures in Australian sport, a kid from the country whose need for speed took him to the top of the podium – and he’s not about to slow down now.

ENDURANCE by Toby Price (with Andrew Van Leeuwen)
You’ll laugh (out loud even), you’ll cry, you’ll feel anguish for Toby because this book runs the full gamut of emotions. If you weren’t half aware of his career you’d surely say this was a work of fiction.
If ever he donates his body to science they’ll surely use it as a reference point as to how much battering, breakages and scarring one human can survive. Beyond that it’s a story of a boy from the bush and a wonderfully supportive family, who went beyond what many would have, just so he could achieve his goals.
“Min”, chapter 5, deals with his sister and her influence on his persona. Get the tissues ready.
Chapter 7 is labelled “Pain”. What he goes through in that beggars belief. His acknowledgement that he is lucky to be alive is so apt. That he survived and managed to race again left me shaking my head. That he even wanted to race again left me dumbfounded.
However, passionate people tend to overlook all else in their pursuit of goals and Toby has a talent that has been nurtured since he could barely walk. Seriously! When you grow up on a large property in Australia you enjoy what’s at hand and there were motorized vehicles at hand.
Toby started racing in the 4-7 year old off road category. “He knows how to dodge sheep. He’ll be right,” said his father, one of two parents who have given so much, often to the detriment of their own lifestyle, to this troubadour on two wheels.
Along the way he has acquired some special friends as well. If you’d just finished a stint on shift work and received a call from America to strip someone’s bike and bring the stuff over to them, immediately, how would you respond? Toby has the kind of pals that will do such a thing.
He’s also lost some friends because, well, they died while racing. It is, after all, a dangerous pursuit. One died in his arms, it doesn’t get any more personal than that.
His ultimate success in the Dakar is truly breathtaking. You need an extremely high pain threshold and Toby certainly has that. With a broken scaphoid (base of your thumb/fingers area) on the throttle hand he had to devise a mechanism with a $5 part so that his throttle could be held open without Toby having to apply too much pressure. All the time the screw that had been inserted was wrenching back and forth at every bump and trashing the bones inside his hand. I winced at the very thought of it. The fact that he won is staggering. As one of his mates once remarked, “You’re not human dude”.
But he is and his story is one of human extremes. I couldn’t get enough of it. Five and half stars from me.

This a a great read for anyone interested in rally motorcycle racing or motorcycles in general. Toby’s story is compelling - he came from a very humble background and has achieved greatness in rally racing while overcoming truly some truly amazing injuries. His ability to come back time and again is awe inspiring.

TobyPrice is a legend both on and off the bike
This is a great read even if you are not into motorsports
Toby is a true warrior recovering from an injury which probably should have seen him unable to walk again the loss of his sister and good friend and his determination to keep going
Thoroughly recommend it

Knew a little bit about his career but he’s had a much crazier life and even crazier career than what I thought.
A great aussie story and he’s surely one of Australia’s most underrated sports people.

What a life so far. Toby's story is a fantastic tale of a humble young boy from country New South Wales to become the winner of the most challenging rally in the world. If you love motorsport, you'll love it. If you love the story of resilience and perseverance, you'll love it even more.

Dakar is such a hard race that only starting it deserves praise. And those who win it, show exceptional bravery. Toby Price won it twice and two more times he just slightly missed. This book perfectly tells how much physical pain, determination and willingness it takes to become a professional Dakar racer and the road to the top is paved with extreme hardship. A well-written book that I recommend to all fans of motorsports.

What an amazing Aussie sportsman! A great story, of a down to earth man with a passion for two wheels. This read was definitely outside my box; but has left me eager to follow Toby's continuing adventures on two and four wheels.
