The Unexpected Gift…
Troy receives a phone call from his great-uncle Jack. He has a gift for Troy and Eva and wants them to have it now instead of leaving it to them in his will. The gift is a mansion that’s over one hundred years old. The catch? It’s near the Badlands in South Dakota. Troy and Eva pack their bags and book a flight. They soon realize the ominous nature of the area they’re visiting and the deadly secrets that it contains.

He was Respected for His Knowledge…
Rex Carson is tall and handsome in a rugged sort of way. As an outdoor tour guide, he studies the lay of the land. People are amazed at his knowledge of the history that surrounds them. Some of the back trails are known only to him. He’ll show them to certain women, especially those who are younger versions of the woman who once betrayed him.

Bodies are Found, and Women are Missing…
Uncle Jack wants to show Troy and Eva the sites at the nearby national parks. Their vacation soon turns into a nightmare as dead bodies are discovered, and young women go missing in South Dakota’s historic landscape.

Oof, this was not for me. This was 1.75 stars, rounded up to 2.

I read a LOT of thrillers & mysteries. This was my 47th this year. I am used to suspending my disbelief for the sake of a good story. However, this book would have required me to completely lose ALL of my common sense to believe it. It was chock full of implausible scenarios, unbelievable dialogue, and focused on some weird details to keep the story going. This is not a mystery, because we learn who the murderer is in the first chapter (maybe even the first page). This story is about how he was caught... with lots of luck.

Troy and Eva are private investigators on a semi-vacation to visit their uncle Jack in South Dakota. The sheer number of coincidences and evidence that gets dropped in their laps is insane. They take on a case they are not even hired for and they don't really solve the case as much as they were always just in the right place at the right time.

It's impossible to say why I disliked this without spoilers, so here's my spoiler tag section:

My favorite thing about this book was that it was a super quick read and it had a lot of mappable locations. I struggled to find a book for my US State Reading Challenge that took place in South Dakota, so I'm glad the book exists, but I am also glad I'm done reading it.

This is the second book in the Troy and Eva Winter’s Deadly Motives Series. Note that there are two series of books with this couple. The Deadly Motives Series and the Thriller Series. Troy and Eva are private investigators who live in the Pacific Northwest and alternate running a bed and breakfast and their private investigations. In this installment, Troy’s great-uncle Jack has decided to give Troy and his sister his 100 year old mansion, located in South Dakota. So Troy and Eva head to the Badlands to check out the house. While visiting the park sites with Uncle Jack, they stumble across a murdered girl. While working on rehabbing the old house, Troy and Eva become embroiled in solving a series of killings involving young women.

I enjoyed this audiobook and am looking forward to listening to more of their adventures. Much of the book was written from the killer’s point of view and the author did an excellent job getting into the head of a serial killer. I was charmed by Troy and Eva’s relationship and their sweet Uncle Jack. In this book, they fell into the investigation by accident and it tends to takes a back seat to their personal business in the city. The character development was very helpful in becoming invested in the characters.

David Scott was a compelling narrator who did and excellent job voicing the characters. I enjoyed listening to him.

The killer is closer than you think

A killer is targeting young women in the national park and no one has found them as yet. Ruby is on a trip with her friend when she is taken. The killer is known to her and she can't understand why she is here. Will anyone know that she is missing? The killer thinks that he has covered his tracks but it all starts unraveling when a body is found. Will he be found out before he can go ish his masterpiece?
Eva is meant to be on holiday with her husband when she finds out about the bodies she knows that she can find the killer. She just doesn't realise how close the killer is. Will they be able to find Ruby before it is too late?
A good read.

'Quiet Kill' was bone-chilling. Moreover, its pulsating page-turning plot was filled with suspense, tension, and action. Eva and Troy, private investigators from Oregon, happened upon some murders that were occurring while they'd been visiting Troy's Uncle Jack who had gifted them his property in South Dakota. The reader was taken on a roller-coaster ride of emotions as to if the killer would let Ruby, a college student and a recent kidnap victim, live or not. This reader's interest held as I kept wondering if the killer would be caught and/or if he would get his comeuppance. Overall, I liked the thrilling narrative.

well told

After a gruesome start, I took a second chance at reading more of this book and finished it.
It’s well told. I liked the characters, each well written to be able to imagine them easily. Some parts are a bit gruesome, but are not glorified at all, and in the end good triumphs.
It’s well edited and proof read, a polished book. It’s completely clean also.
Well done to the authour for writing about a persons depravity and not using vulgar language.

It was a very good read!

This was a very fun book to read. I loved all the descriptions about the area around the Badlands. I have been there many times, and the author hits on all the major sights in this area. It will leave the reader wanting to take a road trip! I also enjoyed the main characters in the Winters family. It was my first book by this author. I will buy more for sure.

A great book with a good storyline & plot which I really enjoyed. Eva & Troy are really likeable characters who are professional, yet compassionate. I haven't mentioned anything about the storyline as I think it spoils it for people who haven't read it yet, but it's well worth reading. I usually go for much more graphic stories as I love a bit of blood & gore, but this was a well written story that didn't need those gruesome bits.

Quiet Kill

An interesting story and you wonder if he’ll kill his captive or not. Additional suspense throughout. The only downside is the characters seem two dimensional. They aren’t completely filled out, but I have no doubt K J North will soon improve on that. I am glad I tried this author

Brilliant narration from David Scott, he brings out the scare and characters. Making this a great listen.

We have a serial killer, who plans each victims demise, he picks who they will be, how he separates them from the other people. We find out how he kills them and gets rid of the bodies. How he has keeps some of them and how preserves them. You have been warned.

It figured that even on vacation Troy and Eva would have a murder mystery to solve. This time the clues were left in their Uncle's attic and they happened upon it by accident. This time the killer is a true psychopath and the murders are gruesome. This action-packed, fast paced mystery is gripping and intriguing beautifully vocalize by David Scott.

Fabulous and fascinating!!!

This book held me enraptured from the word go till the last word! I was worried, distressed, thinking about the results meted out to the unfortunate victims.

What a way to end the book and make us readers heave a great sigh of relief!

Thank you, Ms. North!

THIS WAS LIKE A COZY MYSTERY WITH A HEAVY DOSE OF TRAVELOGISH BOOK OF SOUTH DAKOTA INCLUDED. IT WAS BORING, TOO TALKY (more travelog than thriller) AND IT ENDED SUDDENLY, SEEMED LIKE SHE SHOULD'VE ASKED MORE QUESTIONS.

Husband and wife PI team Troy & Eva Winter are on vacation in SD visiting a great uncle and planning renovations to the family’s manor, when they discover a backpack in the attic. The story continues alternating POV between the couple and a murderer. Pulse pounding story with great narration.

very good read!

It did not start well but I decided to red on. It then became very interesting and thrilling in anticipation if the victim will live. A good way to end a bad guy’s destruction of life.

Light, easy read. A little to much “sicko” for my taste but it did add to the yuck factor. Some details were a little far fetched but that’s what fiction is all about, right?

I would definitely read more by this author.

Never again

I said that on book one but here I find myself on page 90 of book two. I can read no more, do people really talk like this? So slow moving and predictable. I can read no more.

Husband and wife private investigators. Murder mystery centering around a homicidal maniac. Plot was often unbelievable and sometimes felt like it was the script for a very bad movie. But I liked the main characters and might read a later book by this author. C.2022 Quick read.

Not really a good who dunit. It was so easy to follow the plot and figure out who and why. If your looking a good murder mystery, look elsewhere.

Poorly written and very repetitive. A fourth grade kid could have done better. I’m glad it was free.
