I was protected by the monsters under my bed when I was a kid in the foster system. I have a feeling I could use them again.

My time in the foster system wasn’t great. Maybe they were imaginary, but when things got bad, the boogeyman and an imp always came to my aid. If I needed to run, a beautiful white stag would appear at my window to let me know to get out of there. I’ve touched the stag. I know he’s real.

Alastair Rex saved me from the streets and another bad foster home. He’s never raised a hand to me or tried anything inappropriate. But I’m a doll in his playhouse. I can only leave when he lets me. I dress in the clothes he wants me to wear. I say what he wants me to say because I get the feeling he would react violently. I could use my monsters, but they disappeared the day Alastair showed up in my life.

Until I look out of my cage and see the white stag again. It’s time for me to escape Alastair Rex.

The writing is soooo bad. I couldn’t get past the first chapter. Also, can we please stop the “orphan who doesn’t know what kind of magic creature they are” trope? It’s so overdone.

It's a monster romance that's so fluffy but in a good way.

Looks like I've found another author to obsess over. The White Stag is the first book in JB Trepagnier's Monsters Under My Bed series and my first ever Trepagnier book and I loved it. This book was freaking awesome filled with fae mythology, had a sassy heroine, and was wonderfully funny.

I love Reagan. After escaping years of basically being held prisoner, of mental and verbal attacks, of a specific kind of torture, Reagan is figuring out her world, discovering herself, and isn't afraid to ask questions as well as express herself in any way she sees fit. At nineteen Reagan has gone through a lot, she hasn't been treated the best and had to deal with tough situations but she still enjoys the little things that life has to offer.

As for her three monsters, Finnan, Oisin, and Cyrus are three of the most adorable dedicated monsters. They protected Reagan when she was younger and after losing touch due to unfortunate reasons come back to protect her once again, giving her the protection, answers, and freedom she so desperately needs. I love all three of the guys, they are sweet as pie to Reagan and good men to everyone else, except their enemies who they are completely savage with.

I don't know what I expected from Trepagnier but I was totally surprised by what I got and it was a good thing. I love monster romances but imagine my surprise when I learn these monsters are fae, what a twist on the troupe. I love all the fae mythology and getting to learn their world. The Seelie are like puritan humans, misogynistic and all about female purity and all that while the Unseelie are cool, feminists who have open minds all about expression, "you do you" mantra. The Unseelie are pretty cool in this story. The other thing was I didn't expect this book to be as light as it was, I was cracking up and I loved it.

The White was an awesome read, very entertaining. It's just the first book in the series and ended on a cliffhanger that I'm not too worried about but I am excited to see what happens in the next book.

Is the author paid for each word? Because the amount of summation not to mention how much reviewing of the passages that were reviewing parts that was already a review started to get ridiculous. Overall, the amount of over-explanations, along with all random things talked about in the dialogues that didn't have anything to do with the story/characters leads me to believe that the author was taking a page out of many high school students who have to write a 1000 word essay and filling in words to get to some arbitrary word count. The author would have greatly benefitted from hiring an editor and chopping about 40-60% of the unnecessary garbage in the book. If the author has an editor, I would encourage the author to look for a new one.

I got really tired with how repetitive everything was. For example I don't even have a clue how many times I read that Tucker (or maybe his name was Tyler) was a bad/scary/tough bad ass. I get it, he's powerful. The worse part, this was about a secondary character.

The harem members were supposed to be at least a couple of hundred of years old but acted and talked like they were late teens to early 20.

When you are hiding from the big bad, then learn that the big bad is heading your way and you can teleport, go ahead and teleport. But no, why not just sit around and wait for him to show up. I don't even want to go into how weak and pathetic the big bads are.

cringe. I was not paid to write this review, nor was this book recommended to me.

I hate YA. I guess I missed it somehow, because if I had known it was YA, I wouldn’t have started this book. I have book OCD and have been known to force myself to finish many a book for no other reason than “I must finish what I start” or “maybe it will get better”.

I do reviews if a book is really good, or really bad.

The writer is probably young and new.
I think working on that anger would be helpful. When their writing matures and they stick to the story instead of preaching to the choir, they will see growth. There are some people with excellent stories in them, but they have their characters drone on and on at every little personal issue, and it becomes overwhelming…or rather, underwhelming. It’s bad for the story. SHOW people ideas instead of ponderously, over and over, repeating all you hate about the world. We got it the first time. It starts to appear as if it’s merely a way to increase the word count (ya think? 😉).

People read to enjoy themselves and with fantasy, to “escape”. A good story sucks you in and you lose yourself. Ahhh. A writer should aim for this.

4.3 stars.
Ok. It’s a little rambly in places.
But.
I’m interested.
The fae magic and creatures are super cool.
The guys are all really lovable.
I’m liking it.

Not a ton has happened yet, relationship or plot wise, but what’s been set up seems like it’s gonna be cool…and really hot😉

BLURB:

I was protected by the monsters under my bed when I was a kid in the foster system. I have a feeling I could use them again.

Alastair Rex saved me from the streets and another bad foster home. He’s never raised a hand to me or tried anything inappropriate. I can only leave when he lets me. This story is a Slow Burn Reverse Harem. The focus of this book is Reagen's rescue, learning who she truly is and reconnecting with her Monsters. If you love stories about Fae & other Magical & Mythical beings; this story is for you. There was no heat in this story. Only a kiss or 3. The author did a great job building the characters & storyline taking you on a journey into Realms outside of the Mortal one.

Reagen's Monsters:

Finnan; the Hobgoblin who was full of life and "Extra". He was fun and mischievous. He gave me serious David Bowie (The Goblin King) vibes from the movie Labyrinth.

Cyrus; the Boogeyman himself. He was what nightmares were made of except when it came to Reagen.

Oisin; The White Stag. He always appeared in Reagen's window when it was time to runaway from danger.

Once the truth is revealed and Reagen starts becoming her true self and understands Alastair's Masterplan and the role he meant for her to play. Reagen knows that she will stop at nothing to seek revenge. This book ends on a gut-wrenching & Amazing Cliffhanger and I cannot wait for Book 2.

There was some political undertones to this that I really didn't like. Like the way that there was a stark "bad Seelie and good Unseelie" in this book, the Seelie being Republicans and the Unseelie being Democrats. And I'm even left leaning Independent and it bothered me because I don't want that in my books okay? especially fantasy books.

Also, the romance was just not there. MC got her memories back too fast and the whole "what animal is she gonna be thing" was teased out so much that I just got irritated and in the end, really didn't care. Additionally, the zodiac mix in was a little confusing at times and also not super accurate.

All that being said, there was some uniqueness to this book i.e. the stag and the first few chapters I thought were very enjoyable.

It’s sad that I have to keep explaining this but no person can get diabetes from eating too much sugar one time . It’s disappointing that it’s 2022 and I am still having to say this . It’s absolutely not ok. I normally only give 1 star when I come across books that provide inaccurate and made up information about diabetes but I am leaving 2 here because the writing overall is good . This is a good background story . I won’t be finishing the series . I normally love all of JB’s books and I can’t say I have come across one I don’t like before this one . Very disappointing.

The cover is what pulled me into this book, it's gorgeous. While I enjoyed reading it, learning about their relationship and how the monsters essentially protected the h since she was a child- I didn't enjoy the slow burn. I was expecting a little more than a kiss haha. I also wish I found out more about the world this author created. I feel like we as readers were kinda just tossed right into the mix and were expected to figure out what was going on right from the start.

There were lots of hilarious moments that had me laughing out loud. This was a good book, and I do look forward to the next one in the series! Hopefully there's more steam.

Do I recommend this? Yes!.

Fun and slightly different take on far and changelings. Reagen has been groomed to be submissive and obedient to her guardian. Good thing she’s anything but when she’s given the choice. She’s stubborn and opinionated and just wants to be free. Oisin, Cyrus and Finnan are good mmc’s and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes with them after that ending. Also the meeting with the underlie and other important people that shall not be named.

The writing was so bad it felt like i was reading something written by a 12 year old, this would easily been a DNF if it wasn’t for the goodreads challenge. Another book added to the challenge but at what cost

DNF, very disappointing

This book held so much promise but pretty much from the first chapter I could tell I was going to struggle to finish and by about 30% in u had to give up.
The idea behind this was brilliant, I liked the thought of Fae being or nighttime terrors under our beds but the writing really let it down.
For one the pacing was ridiculously off beat. At first I just thought the author was just trying to get the exposition out of the way but no, it continues throughout the book, or as much as I read of it at least, and flooded us with information without really telling us anything.
Some of the errors as well were jarring, so much so that I have to ask is the authors first language English? Was this maybe translated from another language? Because at times it honestly felt like whole paragraphs were lifted right off of Google translate.
It's hard for me to understand how this book has such a following. While the characters are imaginative and original (to a degree) they have absolutely no sense of reality about them. Their interactions feel forced and their "accents" seem to come and go as they please.
I also had a problem with the writing style, at times it felt very juvenile, especially with that rushed tone that gives the book the feel of a homework assignment completed in haste at 4am, out of your mind on caffeine.

All in all this book was a struggle from beginning to at least my end because I couldn't suffer through more of this.
The only reason my review gets two stars is as I say the thought and imagination behind it was very good, but the execution of it was a terrible let down.

let me start this by saying this cover is gorgeous and what drew me into this book. the name is slightly off-putting because Cyrus [the boogeyman] is the prominent leader of the trio, so I was expecting Oisin [White Stag] to be the leader.
The book was okay, it was lacking in certain areas. There is little to no world-building, which I don't usually mind and prefer but I have no idea how the fae world is built. I am guessing it is like the human world in most things. It was just very confusing. And since Reagan already knew the three leading men, we didn't get to know them as readers and I feel like I barely know them. I need more interactions with them before I decide I will love them.
This is just a pet peeve of mine, but I hate pop culture references and there is a lot going on in this book. It is also a slow-burn romance with little to no action in book one
I love the slight sleeping beauty-ness of the story, with her being sent away as a child with her three faes and then being basically under a drug-influenced daydream for years due to a bad fae. I enjoy how different all three men are, and how much of a badass Reagan is. I feel like in most kidnapping novels the female is weak and must gain back confidence again. This bitch was crazy from the moment she was broken from the spell. That ending was also kinda everything. two words, bad bitch.

I really loved this story, and I know JB Trepagnier has done some fun and entertaining stories, but this one is the best one so far, in my opinion. There’s so much about this book to rave on, I’m not even sure where to star, how about with how I came to my rating.

This sentence alone gets its own star!
““Big girls are beautiful. Skinny girls are beautiful. All women are beautiful, and if you’re going to shame one for what they look like, your manky arse doesn’t deserve one.”” Now if only we could get mean girls to realize this and stop trying to drag other women down, we could change the world, and right now we need that.

This sentence also gets a star: ““The Unseelie have never thought of women as property. Dowries were never a thing for us. If she didn’t like you, no money would change hands to force her to marry you. LGBTQ and trans people have always been a thing with us, but we had different names for it.””.

And another: “We don’t care what goes on behind closed doors as long as everyone is consenting and of the right age to do that thing.””
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said the exact same thing!

And another star for including astrology in the story.

JB Trepagnier, I think I love you!❤️💕 If I wasn’t already married to an incredible MtF trans lady, I’d ask you to be my bae! Do people still say Bae? Don’t care, you can be my author Bae!☺️😉❤️🥰😘

I’ve read a few things by JB Trepagnier and I enjoyed them very much, but This book, and hopefully the whole series is my absolute favorite so far! I’m not going to give anything else away, but if you love a good sassy fae story with all kinds of wonderful creatures and a strong female MC, then grab this book. 5 ⭐️s= Perfect story, exciting, engrossing, well developed complex characters, solid plot with few to no holes, descriptive environments and place settings, great mystery elements, realistic dialogue, believable reactions and behaviors, loved this story so much I’d buy it.

4 ⭐️s= Great story, highly entertaining and enjoyable, exciting storyline, well developed characters and settings, a few discrepancies but nothing that can’t be overlooked. Believable actions and reactions, realistic dialogue, a book I would consider buying.

3 ⭐️s= Good but not great story, noticeable discrepancies, grammatical and or spelling errors, undeveloped characters or unbelievable behaviors but still readable. Nothing majorly wrong with the story, just not interesting enough for me to continue. Would not buy the book.

2 ⭐️s= Not offended by the story, but not interested enough to finish. Unbelievable characters, poor writing, many mistakes, big holes or discrepancies, many spelling or grammatical errors, characters not believable, unlikeable or TSTL.

1 ⭐️= Offensive, extremely poor writing, horrible characters, victimization, gaslighting, blatant abuse, unnecessary violence, child endangerment, or any other highly objectionable behaviors by Main characters. Would never buy this book, and do not recommend it to anyone.

Audiobook Review
Overall 🌟🌟🌟🌟½ (4.5/5)
Narration 🎧🌟🌟🌟🌟 (4/5)
🔥🔥🔥 (3/5 Spices) There’s some serious tension and a few steamy moments, but it’s not over-the-top NSFW territory.

Summary:
Reagan is a tough, sassy nineteen-year-old with a traumatic past in the foster system. Her only solace as a kid? The monsters under her bed—specifically, a white stag, an imp, and the boogeyman who always came to her rescue when things got bad. Years later, after escaping an abusive and controlling “guardian,” she reunites with these protectors, who turn out to be fae. Together, they set out to uncover the truth about Reagan’s connection to the fae world and protect her from those who would harm her.

This story blends self-discovery, freedom, and romance with a healthy dose of fae mythology. It’s funny, heartwarming, and full of surprises!

Review:
Let me start by saying The White Stag is a whirlwind of fae magic, monster romance, and one seriously sassy heroine. The narrators brought this story to life in a way that was pure magic—Michael Norman Johnson’s deep, gravelly tones for the monsters and Portia Kay Winters’ perfect portrayal of Reagan’s voice were great. Their performances really added depth to the characters, making you feel every laugh, tear, and tense moment.

This book is an entertaining, emotional rollercoaster that blends humor, heartache, and spice. The plot is intriguing, the characters are lovable (and a little chaotic in the best way), and the world-building is top-notch. I’m officially hooked on this series and can’t wait to dive into the next book!

Would I recommend this book?
Absolutely, especially if you love monster romances with a fresh twist. It’s funny, heartfelt, and full of magical goodness. Perfect for fans of fae lore, sassy heroines, and lovable “monsters.”.

This book covered all of the fantasy basics in the best ways possible. I would say it's a quick read, but I'm not sure if that is because it is a genuinely quick read or because I couldn't put it down.

At first it felt very cliche and I was thrown for a bit of a loop with how Mr. Rex and Reagan seemed to be living their life in the big bad mansion. Then when her monsters show up, it's night and day comparison to the previously mentioned dynamic. This book is so charming and draws you in with the aggressive body positivity. The way they get murderous at the mere thought of their girl being denied even the slightest of smile and how they are practically battling over who can feed her the best bite of whatever is being served is so endearing for those who might have struggled with insecurities like that. We stan curve positive love interests with a diehard passion in this house. <3

The humor and adorable slow burn development of this harem and our MC can be summed up quite nicely with one particular quote:
"No one has tricked me into getting naked to look at my c*** to spite another man before. That's some evil mastermind shit right there. You're going to need it when you're the queen."

The mystery of what exactly Reagan will be dealing with as far as her true nature was fairly easy to guess, but that did not make it any less enjoyable. I found myself an emotional wreck right as the cliffhanger hit and I am borderline raging at having to wait a whole 5 months to see what happens next.

I love JB's series, this new monster romance from her didn't disappoint! This book is number 1 in the new series Monsters Under My Bed, if you've been wanting to get into the "monster" world of PNR, this would be perfect! It's an amazing start to the story, a sassy heroine, funny moments and fae mythology!

I love our FMC Reagan, she is so strong after going through years being held prisoner, abused, and just a lot of awful things. Reagan gets re introduced to the 3 most amazingly dedicated monsters- Finnan, Oisin & Cyrus. They had protected her when she was younger and unfortunately after losing touch they’ve come back to protect her once again.

These monsters aren’t typical of the ones that I’ve read previously and it was such a great surprise! They’re Fae, which tied into the fae mythology that this book brings out. They’re are Seelie & Unseelie far, they’re vastly different in their beliefs, one believing in female purity the other being feminists. They’re also great men, they’re dedicated to Reagan but will let their savage sides come out with their enemies.

Since this is a series I expected a cliff hanger and this one makes wish that book 2 was already released 🤣. You will not be disappointed picking this up!.

This was the first monster romance that I have read from Trepagnier and I thought was hilarious. Our main character Reagan has been hopping from foster home to foster home until a rich man came and took her in. It was only years later when Reagan is about to turn 19 that her guardian makes her an offer that had me running for the hills. That's when the monsters that Reagan thought weren't real came storming in to take her away to keep her safe. And these guys were not knights in shining armor; no, these guys were monsters with horns, tails and shadows that they could control. I was clapping like a madman. While I thought that the pace of the book could have been a bit faster, that was just a me thing. I took my time reading this because I just really wanted to drag it out and really absorb what I was reading. It was an honest blast of a time reading. I even wrote a whole blog post about it if you wanna hear more of my thoughts about the book.

So I just wanted to get this out of the way the beginning chapters of the story put me off. I get that current events can impact an author's writing but I felt like JP was trying to fit in with the woke crowd. I've never seen this evidence in previous books but I was annoyed with it in this one. R.H. and Fae lore is a free for all in terms of sexuality and the liberal leftist p.o.v of lgbtq+ didn't need to be injected into the writing. That being said the rest of the writing was fantastic. I enjoyed all the characters as we really get to know them with how they interact with each other...really is a family unit. I particularly enjoyed that astrology is a factor to the fae shifter forms and power. The story does end in a cliffhanger but keeps you on the hook to find out what happens to Oison. Overall an excellent book into fantasy and lore. I would just tone down certain aspects that are outright annoying.

Wow! What a book! However I will warn you that this book ends on one hell of a cliffhanger so be prepared for that. This book is totally brilliant, the story is so good and I just know the next book will be even better. Also if you’re expecting steamy sex scenes there’s none in this book, all you get is Reagan kissing her monsters one time. Saying that this book is full of brilliant story that you just know will lead into a totally amazing 2nd book. The complete story is going to be something I am so excited for. It’s a book with multiple pov chapters so if you don’t like that then maybe this isn’t the book for you. I have to admit I don’t normally like that in books I read but because of how this is written I absolutely don’t have a problem with it. I can’t wait to Alastair get his butt handed to him I just hope it’s Reagan that does it. Wait till you find out what type of fae she is!!.

This is a weird one to review, because the writing is truly awful. Everything felt rushed, the pacing was terrible, there was no world-building, very little characterization, and no one had a distinct voice. Seriously, there were multiple times where I didn't know if the speaker was a many centuries year old Fae warrior or the young, gay best friend without having to double check. All three men were hundreds of years old, but they spoke like teenage girls! Also, the writing was just... odd. Like maybe English isn't the author's first language? Multiple sentences were contradictory, including one sentence that started saying that the Fae didn't have superheroes, and finished with saying they did have them.

By all accounts, I should have DNF'd this one. And yet... The premise is just interesting enough to keep me going, so why not, I'll give it an extra star for that alone. The second book had better up the spice though, because no one reads reverse harem monster books for the plot.

UGHHHHHH!!!! This book was so good!! Reagan was placed in foster care at a young age. She had her three monsters, Cyrus, Oisin and Finnan who have been with her as long as she can remember. But she was taken at eleven and brought to a manor to live with Alistair, little does she know he wants to be married to her in a few days time but she can't let that happen. She escapes him but finds out he has been poisoning her body with iron supplements but also her mind with Sin-Eaters tea. She learns all about her heritage and that she is actually a Fae and must detox. I loved the chemistry and sexual tension between these characters and seeing Reagan becoming more of herself. I can't wait to read the next book!!!.

Reagan and her monsters....holy smokes. Where to even begin...

Fae princess who has been drugged and coerced into thinking she's a human - check.
3 hot as sin monsters who are supposed to be her bodyguards but feel for her - check.
A-hole dude who thinks she's his and is a bad, bad apple - check.
Spice, Tension, Laughs, Fighting - check.

This book was such a fantastic start to what looks to be an incredible series. I laughed so hard at certain parts "dangleberries", got irritated at parts, and fell in love with all of the characters. Everyone needs a Tucker in their lives.

This book ends on one HELL of a cliffhanger and it has me wanting to send a crate of very stinky fish to the author for that angst, but I absolutely cannot wait for book 2.
