This was my first book of 2022. I enjoyed it very much, maybe because it was in full color, and I’m a simple orc who loves colors. It took me some time to get used to the childishness of the main character, but then I remembered that she was indeed a child when the story started, and that the otherwise irritating manga-esque conventions serve the story quite well. Little Anna’s character shows a touching mix of immaturity and awareness of the supposedly grand future awaiting her as the daughter of the emperor. It’s fun to follow her as she unearths some painful truths about her family and relatives. The budding affection between her and her young husband is surprisingly cute as well, despite being a bit one-sided as it seems at the moment.

I loved the little asides from the author about the design of Anna’s brooch, about writing on parchment, etc. By the way, Anna’s honorific title should have been Porphyrogenita, not Porphyrogenitus, since she’s a girl, but that’s a small thing.

All in all, a very enjoyable, beautifully drawn manga. I’m looking forward to the next volume.
