While I have been a fan of numerous pieces by A.A. Chaudhuri, I cannot say that I find myself in this position. I tried to read and listen to the book on a few occasions, though I could not find myself connecting with either the story or the characters. While I would normally just stop reading and erase any mention that I had started the book, I felt that owed it to the author to pen something and acknowledge the effort.
Chaudhuri spins a tale that has a great deal of potential, mixing numerous timelines with some apparently strong characters. Add some murder and you have all the ingredients for success. I tried to latch onto the various perspectives, or at least find something enjoyable with the characters, but I failed at every turn. Perhaps I sought something harder in a crime thriller genre, but in not finding that, my attention waned and could not be found anew.
For those who did like the book, I would highly recommend some of the others Chaudhuri has written, as they are strong and full of wonderful development. She has a way of spinning a story that keeps the reader in the middle of the action, offering hints and what’s to come. I do hope some of those novels are in the pipeline, as I always enjoy a good story and Chaudhuri has shown that she can write well.
Kudos, Madam Chaudhuri, for what may be a strong thriller for some. Alas, I cannot count myself in the group that has great things to say.
Wealthy, pampered Susan is living the perfect life in leafy Kingston. She'll never let anyine see the darkness she's concealing behind the diamonds and rose.
Grace is new to the group, seemingly the perfect wife and mum. But no one knows the truth of what's happening behind closed doors.
Loner Natalie, hides the pain of her childhood behind a carefully ordered life. But how long can the past stay hidden?
Three unlikely friends, brought together for a weekly class run by beautiful, friendly instructor, Jade. But when Jade goes missing in mysterious circumstances, the group starts to unravel.
In my opinion, you're better going into this story not knowing a lot about it. I was constantly guessing throughout. The twists were unexpected, jaw dropping and the ones towards the end, well. I was shocked. The story is told from Susan, Grace and Natalie's perspectives. The book is so well written and the ending I never saw coming at all.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #HeraBooks and the author #AAChaudhuri for my ARC of #TheLoyalFriend in exchange for an honest review.
First of all, thanks to netgally and Hera books for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
The book follows four woman who all have their secrets. When Jade disappears without a trace, some of the secrets are about to be exposed.
This book was definitely a thriller that kept your attention. In the beginning I found some of the dialogues a bit long and wondered why the author used so much space for discussions I didn’t see the relevance of, but later in the book I realized that we needed the details to be led in different directions and possibilities. I found Susan the least convincing character, she was just so shallow. I liked Grace and Natalie though. Natalie also grew on me when she decided to investigate what might have happened by herself.
I must say the book kept me guessing. I was tossed back and forth, between one crazy theory after another. When the suspense really increased, I was gobsmacked! Didn’t see THAT coming! I also loved the last chapter, it was a fun addition to the story.
The author included a lot of cliffhangers that kept me turning the pages.
This is a belter of a psychological/ drama/whodunit with many offshoots and sub stories that all fed into (really well and not confusingly ) the main event
10 reasons why I so enjoyed this
1. The characters were fascinating, each with their own back history that led them all together to be a part of this story
2.The writing which started, middled and ended the same…brilliantly
3.The feeling of menace throughout
4. How the author led you to think as a reader you had worked it out…..only to realise you hadn’t
5. How mental illness and charcater’s various reactions to this led them to behave throughout
6. The unusual way a charcaters pyschopathetic ( is that a word? ) behaviour played out, not seen this in a story before
7. The story being based sometimes around a gym but a gym that was inclusive ( at least for some of the members! )
8. The terrific and unexpected ending
9. How the whole story felt an ‘experience’ you had been through with the characters and
10. The very honest authors letter and acknowledgements
The Loyal Friend by A.A. Chaudhuri is a captivating thriller that keeps you on edge throughout. You will have difficulty trying to figure this one out as each layer unfolds. The story revolves around an exercise instructor, Jade, and 3 of the women in her class at the health club. When Jade doesn't show up for one of her classes, the detectives start to interview her regulars at class. The 3 women that are regulars are Grace, Natalie, and Susan. As you learn more about each one, you will come to find out that they all had reasons to want Jade to disappear. The fun part for the reader is to figure out which one did it.......or did someone else?
I enjoyed this book tremendously and highly recommend it. The pacing was good, the characters were interesting, and it kept you guessing until the very end. I give it 4.5 stars.
I'd like to thank NetGalley and Hera Books for the advanced copy.
I throughly enjoyed this book it was so twisty and kept taking me down dead ends so I had to keep on guessing on what was going to happen. Very, very dark and atmospheric I highly recommend this book. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Looking at the reviews, I am in the minority here. I was completely unenthralled by this one.
The first half of the book was snail's pace. Nothing happens but toxic women saying toxic things. Eventually, you start to learn secrets and...boy, are they basic! Tawdry, basic secrets belonging to tawdry, basic characters.
Eventually, the author ends things by throwing everything but the kitchen sink out there in a frenetic pace of weird secrets.
I finished it. I was largely bored. I would never read it again.
When Jade doesn’t turn up to teach a class at the local fitness centre, three of her students – Natalie, Susan and Grace – react to her disappearance in their various ways. The book explores the characters’ backstories (and secrets) in multiple first-person POVs. Susan was definitely the most entertaining character for me! Fans of A.A. Chaudhuri’s previous book, SHE’S MINE, are sure to enjoy THE LOYAL FRIEND.
Beautiful and friendly fitness instructor Jade runs a weekly class, bringing together an unlikely group of friends.
Wealthy Susan is living the perfect life but hiding a dark secret
Grace is new to the group and seems to be a perfect mother and wife. Yet no one knows what goes on behind closed doors.
Loner Natalie is besotted with Jade who takes her under her wing. She hides the pain of her childhood behind a carefully ordered life.
Three unlikely friends brought together by Jade, but when Jade goes missing in mysterious circumstances ,the group starts to unravel.
As their secrets are revealed the question you have to ask yourself is, can even their closest friends be trusted!!
A great book where I really didn't want to be disturbed when reading this addictive story. I was constantly guessing and there were several jaw dropping moments.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
Jade goes missing and what happened slowly unfolds through the past and present stories of three of Jade's clients: Natalie, Grace, and Susan. They're each interesting but all so very different. Poor, poor Grace. Susan is absolutely wicked. And Natalie is a complete basket case.
I couldn't put this down. Whizzed right through it. The writing was excellent and flowed like a rapid river. The mystery was deep and so intriguing. I did not see the ending coming. Great twist.
When Natalie met Jade, she was a shy librarian who valued her orderly life more than social interaction. A year later, their best friends. Natalie has gotten in shape at Jade’s fitness classes and actually made a few friends with other women at the gym. But when Jade goes missing, Natalie falls into a tailspin. In part out of concern for her friend, but also because it could be possible she had something to do with Jade’s disappearance.
As the investigation deepens, not only might Natalie’s secrets come to light, but also those of Susan and Grace, two other members of the gym whose past misdeeds are tied together more closely than it might seem.
I’m going to have an unpopular opinion on this one, but I was never able to get into this book. It’s told primarily from Natalie, Susan, Grace and Jade’s points of view. The timeline isn’t linear. The author will bring up a teaser in the present, then jump back in time to explore that teaser more fully. Honestly, I found this jarring.
Despite the fact that the women couldn’t have been more different socially, their voices were all the same. They all suffered from some form of early trauma or present-day mental illness, which should have been really interesting to read from their point of view. Instead, the author told me how they feel, what they did, what they thought. I never felt any real emotion from any of the narrators.
I’ll admit, the backstories were well thought out and compelling. Some of the clues slid into place really well, some felt convenient. I think what brought my rating out of the “average” range was the final chapter. That point of view was, in my opinion, unnecessary and the voice didn’t match the age of the character.
However, a lot of people really loved this book and my opinion is in the minority.
I rated this book two stars. ⭐⭐
Thank you to NetGalley and Hera Books for proving the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Wow, what a story! It’s utterly compelling, I was hooked from the prologue and finished it in a day! The superb writing creates an inner chill of what’s lurking around the next corner, as a palpable tension permeates the pages. Breadcrumbs are skilfully scattered to follow to try to put the pieces together in this unpredictable tale filled with heartbreaking and surprising revelations.
The split perspectives were seamlessly woven together and created a pacey momentum driving the narrative. We glimpse the real characters behind the outward facades constructed enabling us to become invested in each character. Chaudhuri creates such unique characters bringing their own special flair to the story, and fleshes them out flaws and all to bring them spectacularly to life. As the complex, multi-layered plot unravels we see past traumas clawing into the present, fractured relations, toxic dynamics, and distrust infiltrating their group.
When Jade goes missing in mysterious circumstances no one knows what’s happened. As the police get involved and the friendships are put under the microscope, it seems everyone’s hiding something. With secrets simmering beneath the surface, revenge lurking in the shadows, and sinister motives being uncovered, nothing and no one is as they seem.
It perfectly encapsulates the twisty path of friendship when we dig beneath the pretence to reveal the lies, betrayal, and mind games in play. The effect of mental health is explored on everyday life and the struggles faced as a result. Things are set in motion causing unfathomable repercussions; I was in suspense until the very last page! Chaudhuri expertly delivers shocking twists with jaw-dropping impact. It’s a thrilling read that you won’t regret picking up!
With thanks to @_DanielleLouis_, @AAChaudhuri, and @Herabooks for a place on the tour and the opportunity to read and review this book
My thoughts about A A Chaudhuri's A Loyal Friend is one of the best books of the 2022. While reading the book, one has to use his or her brain to understand as every scene is interlinked. I couldn’t possibly say how terrific is this book “Perfection.” When it comes to thrillers, A A Chaudhuri has nailed the genre. There are unnerving twists and turns in the story that you will not expect. Fluffin' poprocks! What the skinny skittles! My gosh, what a thrilling conundrum! An insanely twist of a group of women with a whodunnit. The mystery and secrets galore will keep you intrigued, shocked and undeniably curious to who had to gain from Jades disappearance. The salacious secrets kept things juicy and suspenseful!
Mყ 𝐒ყɴ𝐨ρѕιѕ: Jade is popular, beautiful, kind, and runs an exercise class three times a week at a community gym. And now she's missing. Natalie is absolutely besotted with her friend Jade after meeting a year ago and being taken under her wing. But she's got secrets of her own from a traumatic past during the investigation she can't let be known. Susan, another class goer, is a wealthy, bitter and secretly unhappy woman with demons she's fighting to keep under wraps & allowing her husband she despises from uncovering. Grace is in a loveless marriage herself, desperate to keep hers and her husbands past under lock and key. But with an investigation, their secrets won't be secret anymore. Keep your enemies close, but your friends closer.
I need an oxygen tank from all the gasps & shocks with this novel! This was truly a heart-stopper from start to finish. I was enamoured with this plot more than I thought I'd be and boy did Chaudhuri keep dishing out the dark goods. A yummy thriller that'll keep you guessing and wondering.
Thank you to NetGalley & Hera Books for this ARC! Release Date: June 23, 2022
The Loyal Friend by A.A. Chaudhuri was another excellent book and I was hooked from the beginning till the end. This was a book that just kept me guessing till the end which made it a great holiday read. The ending!!! WoW Brilliant! I loved it! and one of best books of the 2022 I have read. Just like her last book "She's Mine"
I highly recommend this latest book by A.A. Chaudhuri.
"It was never meant to go this far. All I wanted was for her to be taught a lesson."
Friendly fitness instructor Jade’s weekly class brings together an unlikely group of friends: wealthy Susan whose picture perfect life is hiding a much darker truth, newcomer Grace whose image of the perfect wife and mum belies what is really happening behind closed doors, and loner Natalie who is trying to control the trauma from her childhood with a carefully structured life. When Jade fails to turn up to class one day the group begins to unravel and their dark secrets begin to surface. Can any of them be trusted? And could one of them really have had a hand in Jade’s disappearance?
Shocking, surprising and suspenseful, The Loyal Friend is another dark and twisty thriller from A. A. Chaudhuri, who has proven herself to be a must-read addition to any thriller lover’s list. It is a dark maze of twists and turns that will make your head spin. Fast-paced, tense and exquisitely written, Chaudhur teases us by slowly revealing fragments of the many secrets being kept, keeping us on the edge of our seat as we desperately wait for the next piece to be revealed.
The varied cast of characters are all compelling and well written. Natalie was a very sympathetic character who was easy to root for, Grace also sparked sympathy, though her character was much more complex and layered. But the one I enjoyed reading most was the villain of the group, Susan. She is so unlikeable from the start and I loved her for it. She is unapologetic about who she is and though she is someone you’d hate to know in real life, she makes a very entertaining fictional character. Each of them is a suspect, filled with fear and acting suspiciously as they try to avoid the glare of the police. What are they hiding? I had my ideas and felt like one of them had to be involved in Jade’s disappearance, but I was never quite sure which of my two suspects it was, which raised the tension and kept me on tenterhooks from start to finish.
Heart-pounding and unpredictable, The Loyal Friend is a high-octane psychological thriller that keeps you guessing. And that ending! I am still thinking about it weeks after finishing the book.
Wow wow wow, talk about juggling A.A.Chaudhuri certainly did a lot of that in this book. I was absolutely hooked from start to finish. My head was spinning. I finished this late last night and then found myself awake at 5.30 after no sleep writing my reviews.I normally don’t post until the blogtour but I wanted to get the word out for people to buy this book if you like a psychological thriller with lots of layers, with red herrings galore and an impossible to solve mystery then grab yourself a copy of this book out on the 23rd June. You will not be disappointed.
Some have said this is about 3 women, but really it’s about 4. Susan the wealthy pampered, narcissist, who I just wouldn’t trust, Natalie who hides pain from her childhood, and Grace the devoted wife and mother. The fourth woman is the one who brings them all together in her fitness classes 3 times a week Jade.
Natalie has OCD, lacks confidence, has always been bullied, then she meets Jade who comes to the library with some leaflets for her new fitness/yoga classes at the fitness centre. She manages to persuade Natalie to come and give them a go. From there Natalie and Jade become friends or are they? Susan and Grace also attend the classes. But then one Friday Jade isn’t there to take her usual yoga class, so where is she? The only one who is concerned is Natalie, who goes to her home to check on her, she has keys so let’s herself in. Jade’s car is parked outside, but no sign of Jade and when she enters the bathroom there is what looks like blood and her mobile phone.
It’s then down to DI Donovan Bailey and DS Javid Singh to investigate the missing Jade. But as they question each of the ladies it’s clear that they aren’t telling everything. Each of these ladies have secrets that they want no one to know, as more layers start to be removed another secret or lie appears, it’s like peeling an onion.
The story is told from the points of view of the four main characters, each chapter reveals a little bit more about that character. The timeline is mostly in the present which is set in 2018, going back 1 year to when Jade started her classes and the ladies met, Grace was slightly later joining. There is one point that the story jumps back to 1988.
But who has the most to lose?, when the ladies find out that Jade kept a diary, they all appear worried, they have no idea what she has put in it. This is one absolutely brilliant read how the author managed to get all the strands of this story to meet at the end I don’t know.
I loved the author’s last book She’s Mine but I think this one has blown that one out of the water with a very big splash.
For a fuller review check my blog on 24th June Jackiesreading4leisure.home.blog but I highly recommend this book.
Holy Freaking Moly. What a book this was. This literally has everything you can ask for in a psychological thriller. It has a bunch of women with different personalities, some whom you relate to, like and feel like you know and then the bitches who you hate. It is filled with twists, a big gaping question mark in your mind of who did it and then BAM!!!
The Loyal Friend follows the disappearance of Jade Pascal. Natalie is distraught, wants to know what the hell has happened to her only friend. Grace, is indifferent wonders what has happened and Susan couldnt give a shit. All three women know each other and the missing Jade from the Club in which they attend weekly classes with their fitness Instructor Jade. OR DO THEY? Aside from the club the only other thing these women have in common is secrets. This book is riddled with secrets that no one is quite wiling to share. Leaving you intrigued throughout.
I absolutley loved the characters in this book. They were vibrant, life-like and relateable. I felt a connection to them so much so that if i put the book down i felt myself wanting to catch up with them like they were a friend.
Natalie i liked from the beginning. She was nice and relateable and it was clear she had Mental Health issues from the beginning stemming from a traumtic past. I related to her quite a lot and i felt the biggest connection with her, did i have her fit to bill for the missing friend.. yes, i honestly did, But not in a malicious way. Even with her secret she was habouring i still liked her, she was still a nice, down to earth character who i can only assume wil be loved by all.
Susan and Grace had something about them from the get go. I didnt trust Susan from the first time i met her. Whereas Grace i did quite like, even after her revelations of secrets.
Jade, however was the biggest shock of all. Reading her chapters all from Before i was unsure what to make of her honestly, but the friendship she had built with Natalie is what swayed me into liking her character. Well lets just say it is certainly not the quiet ones we need to look out for!!
This is an absolute BELTER of a thriller, the author has a fantastic writing niche and has a FANTASTIC ability to write incredible chracters. I highly recommend reading this book.
This is the first of Alex's books I've read. It's told in the first person from the viewpoint of Natalie, Grace, Susan and to some extent Jade. They all belong to a health club, join a yoga class headed by Jade. Natalie is a troubled young lady, she's had a really tough life and has to live a very regimented life, everything noted and checked off, so she doesn't get stressed and start sleepwalking again. Grace is living with her husband and her two boys, and Susan is miserable in her marriage. When Jade goes missing all the lies and secrets of each woman start to become uncovered. As you think ok I've got the arc of this now, this character has done this and that's led to that etc, then the author throws you hugely off the scent with another crazy twist. It portrays the complicated relationship women have with each other. How our insecurities about where we are in life, our jobs, our kids, our looks, age, weight, all impact our behaviour. All the lies and secrets we keep. It also shows the real issues surrounding mental health. There are a couple of really poignant moments where you realise this is still a huge issue. The final theme is family, the very complicated dynamics between families, loyalty or lack of. This is one of the most thoroughly complicated complex and intricately plotted stories that works to perfection. A truly brilliant read and I can't wait to see what more is released from this wonderful author.
I received a copy of this ARC for feedback. I don’t know where to begin? My first time reading from this author and I enjoyed it a lot. This book kept me on my toes. There was drama, secrets, mystery. I was only able to figure out one tiny part of the plot. I enjoyed it. It was not a predictable storyline. No sexual content and not much swearing if any. It was a little long. I feel there were a quite a few pages that could have been removed to prevent the feeling of repetitiveness. However, all the work the author put in this novel was worth the type of ending you come to. I am going to read more books from this author for sure.
I’m a big fan of the authors previous work so I was very excited to hear about a new book being released :)
This book was brilliant. I was gripped straight away, I was really invested in each of the characters stories. The chapters are split between 4 friends, but mostly between 3 of them - Grace, Natalie & Susan as they each try to hide their own secrets whilst trying to discover what’s happened to their friend Jade. Each character has their own issues that they have been through that they are still dealing with and each characters story is told so well and the characters seem so real you can really build up pictures of them in your head, which just shows great writing.
The thing I loved most about the book.. that all the women each had the different backgrounds that made them all so different but yet so similar, when books are usually written like that I usually find that one story weighs heavier than the others but with this all the stories have their own heartbreak and I was really interested in each of the characters and it really keeps you guessing throughout the whole thing and suspecting everybody!
There are a lot of twists and turns with this which I just loved! I had a few little ideas of where things were going but towards the end so many other things came out I was like 🤯🤯 I absolutely love a thriller that can shock you and this one 100% does.
I definitely recommend to thriller lovers who love twists 🙂
The Loyal Friend by A.A. Chaudhuri was overall a good thriller and quite a few twists to have me guessing throughout. A satisfying ending. Some places in the book seemed to drag, and I found myself skimming to get to the action.
Expertly layered suspense with a brilliantly complex cast of characters you can’t get enough of!
If you enjoy psychological thrillers that ooze toxicity from their pages, keep you guessing right to the final paragraph and then explore a wealth of relevant themes, The Loyal Friend is a book you must read. A. A. Chaudhuri has written a novel that twists and turns, coiling it’s readers in its grasp and not letting them go until the final page is turned. I was completely gripped by this book and that was down to the accomplished blend of characters and plot. I was immediately hooked on wanting to discover what had happened to Jade, but as I read on, I found that I was equally invested in discovering the truth about the three women at the centre of the narrative (Natalie, Susan and Grace). Told from each of their perspectives, very quickly we understand that each of them has a number of dark secrets that they do not want to be revealed. This really ramped up the tension whilst reading and I was constantly trying to work out how each of these women’s lives intertwined beyond attending the same exercise class and how that might interplay with Jade’s disappearance. Chaudhuri is exceptional at weaving swathes of secrets, complex relationships, hidden meanings and veiled truths throughout her narrative. She sprinkles clues throughout and I enjoyed picking up on some of these and being able to work out a few of the reveals, but I did not see the final revelations and direction the novel took coming! Chaudhuri is a master of misdirection and I loved how she allowed me to think I was working things out, only to rip the rug out from under me and completely surprise me with the ending. That has made this a really memorable read for me.
I also really enjoyed the cacophony of different themes that meander their way through the plot. Chaudhuri tackles a number of issues, making this a really thought-provoking book, as well as an enjoyable thriller. The main theme that ran prominently through the book for me, was mental health. All of the women at the core of this story have some kind of mental health challenges - whether subtle or overt - and these are often cushioned by other themes important to the narrative and both unify and distance the characters from each other. Natalie is the most obvious sufferer, with her tortured past and her unsettling behaviour whilst sleeping. Her difficult childhood unites her with Jade, who has also suffered abuse when young. Both of these women have had impacts on their mental health because of their childhood. Susan and Grace are both impacted by events at their hands, but are similarly impaired and desperate for their past actions to remain hidden. For Susan, much of her mental health is wrapped up in image, status, wealth and the impression of privilege she gives to others. When this is threatened, she primarily turns to alcohol, but her actions can become unspeakable. Similarly, Grace is primarily concerned with image and the illusion of her life to others. She has a tragic past and will desperately try to keep the truth of it from becoming known. Her desperation to keep her dark past hidden has directly impacted her mental health. Whilst all of these themes are fascinating in their own right, the way Chaudhuri stitches them all together through these characters’ relationships is nothing short of exceptional writing abilities. I was enraptured by these characters and the multiple layers of their lives. They aren’t always likeable and they are certainly all complex, but they are all three-dimensional and wholly human. I defy anyone who reads this to not feel some kind of impact from them.
I’m looking forward to reading more from A. A. Chaudhuri!
Read this if: 🍷 You love a twisty read 🍷 You want a page turner 🍷 You love not knowing who to trust

Wow. This was a brilliant pick for bookclub (If I do say so myself 🤣) I stupidly left the book until last minute & was worried I wouldn’t finish it in time. No need to worry though, I demolished it two days. I just couldn’t put this book down!!
Things I loved: 💙Multiple character perspectives 💙Tooo many motives to count 💙I like to think that I’m pretty good at following the bread crumbs but this one was clever. It has several layers. You think you’ve uncovered the plot & then another twist was thrown in. 💥 🤯 💙Interesting mental health representation as well as some clever takes on the challenges women today face 💙THAT ending. I didn’t see it coming at all!
Things I struggled with: 💙I found the characters quite unlikeable, but I think that was the point. To begin with I couldn’t be bothered with Natalie’s chapters but the further I got into the book & understood the characters more, the more I appreciated her!
