We've all had uncommon situations happen at work that leave us stammering for words, emotionally charged, or just plain unsure of how to address an issue or situation. After reading this book, I come away feeling better prepared to navigate unexpected or uncertain workplace situations.

The contents cover finding and starting a new job, managing relationships with your boss and coworkers, advancing your career, and other workplace dilemmas. The helpful advice provides ideas to handle the issue while at the same time managing your emotions and settling your nerves so you can tackle the matter like a mature, responsible adult. I appreciate the examples of what to think and say as the right words can often diffuse a tense or awkward exchange, and when you're in the moment your surprise or uncertainty can leave you unable to think clearly and professionally. Other helpful tips include a short explanation of why an alternate action might not give the desired results or would lead to more difficulties, and a what next section that considers the results of your words and actions.

The what next section is realistic in that sometimes things go the way you want and sometimes they don't. The author wisely points out other perspectives to get you thinking in new directions but the one downfall is that she doesn't always offer solutions when actions don't bring about the best results, thereby leaving you floundering over what to do next. I wish she had pointed it out crisply and concisely that some issues can't be resolved in the best way and you just have to learn to deal with it, or perhaps move on and hope for better in a new department or at a new employer. We all have a different perspective and your best way may not be the same as someone else's best way and you have to consider how you will move forward when things don't turn out as you'd hoped.

The positive mindset and professional tone will serve you well even if you don't see the immediate changes or desired outcomes directly. The advice presented here gives you the tools to make you a more thoughtful and responsible employee and coworker, and will lead to an overall calmer and more productive career and workplace which is a win in any vocation.

Do you find yourself dealing with a difficult boss, colleagues, struggling yourself with climbing the ladder, unfairness and/or harassment? Try this.

The book is broken up into categories of daily choices we face within the confines of a (mostly office/corporate/cubicle-type) job.
Each section is then subsidized into explaining the issue, and then offers metaphorical solutions of what you can THINK, what you SHOULDN'T do, and what you SHOULD say.
It also offers ultimatum which is "Find a new job".

That seemed to be my biggest takeaway....It doesn't matter if its harassment, dealing with managers/bosses, colleague concerns or issues with understaffing...
If you think anything is a red-flag, leave the company. Yes, to an extent they do suggest that you try and work out whatever you can, but ultimately, the final stamp is LEAVE THE JOB!

Do with it what you will.

5/5 stars!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love this book a lot! It was very helpful to me and I got a lot of tips with regard to job interviews, getting references, etc. I really appreciate what this book did and it is really helpful to fresh graduates like me who was never taught what to do when looking for jobs, job interviews, and so much more! Truly a great resource for us. I highly recommend!

Do This, Not That... this book is everything it promised! A Brief bullet point guide to navigating your career, through job searches, interviews, making friends on the job and dealing with difficult coworkers or bosses. I would have preferred more detail in a few situations, but keeping to the 2-page spread format, I understand they needed to make the information as concise as possible. helpful and to the point!

This book is what the “young adult” genre is to the “novel” genre: a basic book for beginners filled with tips that, while useful, you will have heard before. I know I did.

Examples: Be polite, professional, and friendly with everyone in the office. Take things slowly, and let relationships build up over time. Remember that some people don’t want to make friends at work.
