Hello, Moon! You look so beautiful tonight! Do you mind if we sit with you?
In this joyful celebration of a child’s sense of curiosity about the world, a parent and child explore the wonder of the changing moon together. Because sometimes all you need is someone to share the silence with.

A young child and their mother greet the moon every night - and the mom explains the phases of the moon to the child. Feelings are also discussed - the child thinks the moon might feel shy so that is why it is hiding part of its face. Or possibly lonely so the child reminds the moon of all the stars that are shining. This is a peaceful, cozy read - the time frame is winter so the child and mom have to bundle up to go outside to see the moon in the cold and the snow. I think most children are fascinated by the moon at some point. This would be an excellent book to share to celebrate that fact. Don't forget to peek under the dust jacket - the hard cover of the book is different.
A mother and child bundle up and venture outdoors on many a cold winter's night to observe and comment on the phases of the moon. I've been known to do this myself, so I was enraptured by this one. I'm also in love with the author's illustrations, and I'll be seeking out more of his work.
A quiet, gentle, book of appreciation for the moon throughout its phases. A parent and child admire the moon together in the wintry mountains. Gorgeous illustrations, slightly choppy or awkward writing at points but still a great moon read.
Themes: Moon, Night, Quiet Age range: Toddler-Kindergarten
A mother and child greet the moon each night as the mother explains the phases of the moon in figurative terms. Both the eeriness and affinity of the moon are captured through the marbling ink and gouache style. A great book to inspire students to wonder and connect with this celestial presence; as well as providing a segue into science.
Oh, what a lovely, poetic celebration of the moon, the magic of nighttime, and the special bond between parent and child! Enchanting illustrations have a dreamlike quality—perfect to read before bedtime, especially for anxious sleepers.
What a beautiful and heartwarming book! With a message of acceptance and solidarity when one retreats, this is a moving book that helps a reader process change and loss. A 2023 Caldecott contender.
Vibrant, eye-catching illustrations with striking angles and perspectives in this picture book about a parent and child experiencing the wonder and joys of the changing moon together.
Contemplative text with parent and child pondering the moon. Stunning illustrations flow across the page from various perspectives of both the characters and the night sky.
This book will be one that is forgettable in my mind. There is no plot and the art is only vaguely interesting in showing the moon phases over the landscape.
Beautifully done book about acceptance even when we don't feel and present our best to the world. Also a create fiction crossover for learning about the moon and her phases - highly recommended!
This is fine. I think there are a couple of stand-out moments that would be nice wall art, but I wouldn't be interested in reading it again all the way through.
Early the other morning, before sunrise, the moon, a tiny sliver, was hanging above the golden horizon. Can you see it framed by the still black lacelike tree branches? That orb in all its phases has supplied this human with a sense of security and wonder never fading over decades.
Fortunately and with gratitude, my canine companion ensures most days begin and end with views of the moon, when it is visible. Within the past month, two newly-released picture books focus with great beauty on this celestial sphere.
In all weather and in all seasons, walking outdoors brings breathtaking vistas for all beneath the moon. Certain factors can cause the moon to appear larger or to shift in color. Sometimes there are rings of varying sizes around the moon. No wonder animals howl at it, perhaps in appreciation.
In this next book, Hello, Moon (Atheneum Books for Young Readers, September 20, 2022) written and illustrated by Evan Turk, readers enjoy a tribute to the moon. We wander outside with a parent and child witnessing the phases of the moon. We experience its magical light night after night.
Beautifully illustrated title about a young child and their Mother watching the moon in its various phases. The illustrations capture very will the balance of light and darkness that one sees in the various stages of the moon. Even depicted is the amount of stars seen in the darkness of the moon. Very perceptive artist.
