You're Invited to a Creepover Graphic Novels #1

Truth or Dare: The Graphic Novel

Rate this book
The bestselling You’re Invited to a Creepover middle grade series comes to graphic novels with this first book about a bone-chilling sleepover game gone ghostly.

During a round of Truth or Dare, Abby Miller confesses her crush on Jake Chilson. The only people who know her secret are her friends at the sleepover—and whoever sent her a text message in the middle of the night warning her to stay away from Jake…or else!

But Abby isn’t going to stay away from Jake, especially not after he asks her to the school dance.

As the night of the dance comes closer, some very creepy things start happening to Abby. Someone definitely wants to keep her away from Jake. Is it a jealous classmate or, as Abby begins to suspect, could it be a ghost?

Creepy full-color graphic panels tell the story with the same horror as the original novel! This spine-tingling tale is a Level 3 on the Creep-o-Meter.

The You’re Invited to a Creepover is getting a graphic novel treatment and HECK I am in for that!

In 2016 I discovered the You’re Invited to a Creepover series. The first two books were released in Dutch (hilariously, after that none of the books got out in Dutch) and that is how I came across the series. What followed was buying the rest of the series and then waiting and waiting. Because as the series progressed the books got out less and less. SO that is why I am so happy that the books are getting a new treatment in the form of a graphic novel. Now, I am not sure if I will be buying all the books in the series in this format, I mean, I already paid for 22-ish normal novels, I am not sure if I want to go through that again and this time for double (since the GNs are 10 euro each). Maybe I will just buy my favourites!

Meet Abby. She and her best friends are having a great time, there is a sleepover, friendship things, and more! She has kind parents. A boy she is interested in. But what happens when she expresses that interest during a sleepover? Things got quite scary at times. From being pulled under the bed, to spooky things in the garden, to finding objects and scary texts. There was a lot happening and it definitely held my attention. It’s been long enough that I didn’t know all the details so it was mostly all fresh to me which is a delight.

I wasn’t too happy with one of the reveals, I won’t spoil it, but I think I would have rather gone a whole different route.

And I wasn’t too happy with one of Abby’s friends, the red-head girl. She was just way too over the top at times and didn’t understand that her friend wasn’t always too comfortable with things. And maybe she should have believed Abby a bit more. I get things are hard to believe, but if my friend came to me, confessing several things that had happened to her? I would have definitely talked to her and helped her out.

I loved that Abby did try it with Jake despite all the things that happens in her life now that something knows of her crush. I was a bit frustrated with Jake though, how he was willing to just break it up with Abby when things really got scary. I mean, I can understand it. Things are scary. But boo, do you really think that the ghost or whatever is stalking you will stop? Do you want to have a life full of nothing? You gotta fight boy! Stand up.

The ending was a bit of a disappointment. I would have just liked a few more pages to just give it a bit more. Now it was here is something scary and boom, done.

I love that this book was diversified. As I would call it. Just look at the cover from the first book in novel and now in graphic novel. We went from 3 white (or at least white looking) girls and 1 BIPOC to 1 white girl and 3 BIPOC.

The illustrations/art of the graphic novel was really fun! I like the style a lot and it fits well with P.J. Nights story!

All in all, recommended to all! This was just way too much fun and I am happy this series is getting a revival. Now I would just like more normal novels again! That would be epic.

My daughter and I read this out loud to each other. She was excited to share a book with me that was a graphic novel. While this isn't a book that I would just pick up and read, I love that it was a book she "taught" me how to read.

She is 9 and was creeped out by the story. I feel it's enough of a scare for this age. There isn't any gore. She wasn't scared enough to not sleep or have nightmares. I think it's a good step for this genre if the child likes that stuff. The images showed good clues that she picked up on and wanted to point them out as we read.

I would get more books by this author.

Eh, it was fine. I didn't like the art (the best-friend character looks exactly like the dead girl, which is confusing) and the writing was pretty stilted. It didn't build the tension well and the resolution felt out-of-left-field.

I don't expect scary stories for kids to be especially complicated or inventive, but this was just meh.

If a beginning chapter book can be truly creepy (Mr. Shivers) then my standards are not the problem.

My 10-year-old has read this graphic novel no less than 4 times and begged me to make it our next nightly read aloud. I found the twist super bizarre and completely unbelievable, but I'm just happy that she is reading!

2 stars.

This was not it. I picked this up for the Lets Get Graphic Readathon on YouTube and I was hoping this would give me the "Goosebump" nostalgic vibes but I ended up just feeling like I was stuck at slumber party and all I wanted to do was call my mom to pick me up. 😂

I know this marketed towards preteens/teenagers but this was a good story. I felt like the characters were not the greatest towards each other and I hope other younger readers don't pick up on that. I was so sad about not enjoying this because I borrowed the first three books in the series from my library but after reading the first one, I won't continue.

I do want to mention that the art style is beautiful, I just wish I enjoyed the story.

I quite enjoyed this graphic novel. It was creepy without being over the top. I liked the way the story flowed. I liked that our girls actually felt like teenage girls. I also liked the reveal at the end. We felt good with how things were resolved. And then we ended with that cliffhanger. That was fun. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series.

Rating 2024: 3/5 - I liked the ending to this. It was creepy but the whole cousin thing seemed way too easy.

Some scary bits sprinkled throughout and a classic reveal at the end. Nothing groundbreaking, but still a fun creepy graphic novel for kids.

This was one of those impulse reads at the library. You're just looking for something to read, and you pick the most interesting-looking graphic novel off the shelf, and read it before you even buy the book. Usually I prefer more text than pictures, but in a scenario like this, I like to have something short and entertaining while I wait for my mom to order her coffee. ;)

I don't even usually like ghost stories, and I didn't like the part with the but that aside, this was a fun read. Suspenseful, entertaining, and it lasted just long enough without it being too short!

The pictures were beautiful, and I love the art style and bright coloring. I probably won't read another book in this series, unless we go to the library again, just to see what the others are about, since I personally try to stay away from horror and the unnatural type of stories. But since I am one who dislikes the otherworldly (unless it's Christian/Catholic beliefs, of course!), I would still recommend this to one who does like horror/supernatural!

Abby Miller likes Jake, and tells her friends, including Leah, at a sleepover. Jake has a tragic past, however; the girl he loved, Sara, was killed about a year ago when a car jumped the curb and killed her right after she said goodbye to Jake. There is a dance coming up at school, and Leah encourages Abby to go out with Jake, who is her neighbor, but strange things are happening to Abby and she fears that they are caused by the ghost of Sara, come back to avenge her death. There are odd power surges, ghostly flickerings outside her window, and even texts from an anonymous number telling her to leave Jake alone. Leah and her other friends think that she is exaggerating, but when the blouse her mother has gotten her for the dance is returned to her closet shredded and ruined, what other explanation is there? It's got to be an evil ghost. Is it safe to go with Jake to the dance? And if that's okay, then clearly going to the cemetery where Sara is buried when a text instructs Abby to do this is perfectly fine. Will Abby and Jake meet a violent, horror movie end, or is there a more realistic explanation for all of the eerie happenings?

There aren't a lot of horror graphic novels, although Hahn's Took and Wait 'Til Helen Comes have recent graphic novel adaptations, so I was glad to see adaptations of the Creepover series. The novels themselves are fairly short, and I'm hoping that after one or two of the graphic novels, my readers will pick up some of the 22 chapter books that have already been published (2011-2017).

The illustrations have a shadowy, creepy vibe to them, and I was glad to see that not all of the characters are white, as they seem to read in the originals. There's a lot of use of dark tones, swirling backgrounds, and eerie, glowing lights. The outside is always especially foreboding at night, and Abby's imagination makes everything appear darker and more threatening than it really is.

There is a good amount of friend drama that will appeal to middle grade readers, and romance is always a big draw as well. I thought it was fun that parents make an appearance in these, since most of the story is set at home rather than at school. Hand these to elementary and middle school readers who want a story that is scary but not TOO scary!

Fans of Goosebumps, Stranger Things and Are You Afraid of the Dark? will love this new series of graphic novels. Truth or Dare is the first in the series and delivers brilliant cover design, spooky themed end papers and decorated book spine complete with the number '1" in a splotch of what could be blood tell young readers this is the first book.

Full color vibrant illustrations by Ornofio Orlando are brilliant! If the publisher uses this artist for the entire series, it's a guaranteed win for everyone, including lucky readers.

Truth or Dare is a game played by a group of four friends at a sleepover. When it's her turn, Abby chooses Truth and confesses she likes Jake. Leah sends Jake a text on behalf of Abby. When that text causes an anonymous threat text, Abby is terrified. She can't believe it's a text sent by a ghost, but who else would be mad if Jake has a new girlfriend?

When Jake asks Abby to the school dance, the threat level ramps up. Abby enlists BFF Leah to help her contact the ghost of Sara, Jake's old girlfriend who died the previous year. If it is Sara, there must be some way of allowing her closure to complete whatever is holding her spirit in Riverdale.

Age appropriate spookiness with twists and turns will keep younger readers guessing. Creepover may be the next BIG graphic book series for upper elementary and middle school.

Recommended grade 4 and up.

Not that great.

The story is ho-hum, as is the adaptation from chapter book. The ending is both anti-climatic and predictable.

I'm a little surprised that the illustrator was given no bio on the flap; they do the heavy lifting here.

Anyway, I guess if you want to turn an old property into the profit you make it a graphic novel.

Modern haunting in the classic style of 1980s and 1990s ghost stories. The spooky is just enough to make you believe, the realistic aspects are relatable. The art is typical graphic novel art with details and colors bold, shiny and what is needed to grab the visual aspect of the story. I am not sure I like the ending, but it works.

Started as a good creepy story with a (boring and unrealistic) twist. Added a good final twist, but the initial wrap up was just "meh".
