The Witches of Silverlake Volume One

Rate this book
It's always tough being the new kid in the coven.

Elliot Green has had a rough year. His dad died, he had to move across the country, and now he’s about to start high school in one of LA’s most prestigious private schools, where his mom has accepted the position of Vice Principal. He’s quickly taken in by the school’s the scholarship kids; the queer kids; and the ones who just don’t really fit in with the glossy trust fund babies of SJTBA. They quickly let him in on their little secret…they are witches. Elliot joins them in their world among the crystal stores and occult shops of Silverlake and ends up joining his new friends’ coven. During one of their magical experiments, they accidentally release a bloodthirsty demon that starts murdering their classmates and teachers. Elliot and his coven realize that the fun and games of playing with crystals and candles is over, that magic is powerful, real, and that it might be more dangerous than they’d ever imagined.

Witches! Queer teens! High school!

Lots of familiar tropes, a little predictable in some places. Some overall pacing issues. Felt like it went reeeeally fast and couldn’t always get my bearings.

But, overall a fun read and will be interested to read what comes next!

YA graphic novel about a group of friends who are discovering magic in real life together. Elliot has recently shifted to this new town where he ends up joining a coven, fighting demons and discovering magic as well as friendship. The moment I started reading this I knew it is going to be a 5-star read.

The graphic novel captures attention and continuously builds up excitement with every flip of the page. The story is exhilarating and devastating in the same breath, especially considering the ending.

It is also a coming-of-age story with LGBTQ2+ rep which was an additional feature and not just the focus of the story, the story is nostalgic in the sense that it explores quite few of the high school events and people that give that unique edge to that phase in our lives.

The illustrations were definitely adding brilliance to the plot.

I really bummed about this one. The concept for this and the art style is so up my alley heck even the plot is great. This could have been a really cool series if it wasn't for dialog.
All of these characters sounds nothing like real teenagers. Their dialog feel like an AI wrote it after watching all the seasons of Glee. I mean its like the authors has never been near real teenagers.
Also the characters were all stereotypes. We had the ultra feminine gay, the "slutty" bisexual, the butch lesbian, and the shy new kid and, not a single original person in the group.
Sadly this story is just a major pass for me.

Representation: queer white protagonists, queer Black protagonist, trans Indian protagonist, bisexual Mexican-Puertorican protagonist, fat white protagonist, gay Black secondary character, Black tertiary character.

Content Warning: death, mentions of suicide, gore, blood, violence, anxiety.

Review to come…

LOVED the illustration of this book. The colors, the style, the mood - all perfect and gave me Riverdale vibes (I know we ha ha he he about that series, but we are just talking visual vibes here.)

This graphic novel is not a stand alone so I find it hard to get a good read on the plot so far. This was much more of an introduction than a full story but I am interested in following along with the rest. I just wish it didn't feel so unfinished.

Art was the best part. Writing was lackluster. Felt like it relied on one dimensional queer stereotypes and no development, just hints for future books about their baggage (but not enough here to invest me). I like the author’s intentions of making a queer friendly Hogwarts alternative for found family but then why make it LA Catholic school teens??? There’s so much dark imagery and violent death, and there’s absolutely no cozy vibes whatsoever. The friendships seem shallow and underdeveloped. Feels like more modern the Craft more than Harry Potter.

Also don’t love that the one out bisexual character is a massive horn dog obsessed with flirting with everyone’s PARENTS and teachers??? Yikes, what is this??? Also the one trans character is only listed as trans in the character bio section at the end of the book and is not really a major character. I thought maybe Elliot was because he’s uses male pronouns and it seemed a couple times people used female pronouns to describe him and were misgendering him but I think it was just bad/confusing writing because he’s explicitly listed as cis. I love trans characters just getting to be themselves without it being Drama but if you wrote this book to be an antidote to JK Rowling’s hatefulness maybe have more than one trans character or have their stories be more centered. It’s giving “Dumbledore was gay the whole time!”

Why can’t I get more graphic novels like this one? I want more books to do nods to their predecessors. We got a Mean Girls reference towards the very beginning and I knew I’d love this! Then there were The Craft ones too.

The Witches of Silverlake follows Elliot, who after his father’s suicide and his own attempt, moves across country to LA from Detroit. His mother gets a job as a VP of a Christian Academy and he gets a full ride scholarship. On his first day, he meets a group of outcasts that quickly befriend him… who are looking for their final coven member.

This has a very diverse cast, including many queer characters. Even the popular jock is gay, so you could say that I was excited about it becoming a series.

I really hate when a book ends on a huge cliffhanger… Elliot walking in and seeing ______ hooking up, running away, and then finding 🩸🗡️???? I’m not giving anything away… you’d have to read it to understand. 🤯🤯🤯

This doesn’t come out until JULY!!!!!! So does that mean it’ll be 2024 before I get to read the sequel?😭😭😭

First, and foremost, let me say that I absolutely love, love, love the art style! It's crisp, and a vague throwback to some of the manga I used to read as a teen. On top of the art I love, the premise for the story is so up my alley it's like it was written with me in mind: queer rep? Witches? High school drama? Count me in!

The overall execution was decent. I felt that the pacing was a bit herky jerky, and really could have done with a more expansive, fleshed out story. Did I still enjoy it even though I found parts of it a bit lacking? Yes, and I am definitely looking forward to volume two when it becomes available in the future!

Thank you to NetGalley and Legendary Comics YA for the ARC!

I wasn't familiar with this creative team, but I will be checking out more of their work. I love the art. Everything has a soft touch. It works really well with the fantasy story. The bright reds used is super powerful. The story is great. I got to the last page and immediately wanted the next volume. Oh that cliffhanger! So good! I started it and did not want to walk away. I also loved that the stones used in the comic are correct. Which is always nice to see.

loved loved up until the halway point because of the seriously violent and scary stuff that was happening. i was like wait this story is really getting into it and not pulling any punches, and it's gay wtiches about to make shit go down? oh yeah i'm so in. But then around the halfway point it started getting a bit confusing to me, a bit less coherent, with the scenes and setting transitioning from one to the other without warning or development. it's like, something happens, then when you read the next page you have to figure out on your own that "oh, okay, we're not at the friend's house anymore and that sleepover is over, we're now at the main character's house", etc. many parts of the story were also not explained well in my opinion. still want to check out volume two to see where the story goes. illustration and art style is everything though

I enjoy this short graphic novel however it did seem at the beginning that certain events were missing or there could’ve been like a short Novela type thing before this also the character profiles in the back of the book have added information that isn’t in this volume such as the powers they gain and how they look later on in the series, which feels like it could be a spoiler for later, but I don’t know by the time I read them to check on some things I was over halfway through the book so I was pretty sure what I was saying was going to happen near the end wasn’t going to that could be a misprint I guess but who knows overall I really like this graphic novel and can’t wait for the continuation of the Series

sometimes it's really hard to review the first volume of what's clearly going to be a series, especially when that volume is pretty short at 120ish pages.

I can say that I will 100% be continuing this series and that it was a little creepier than I was anticipating.

I do think this volume has a few pacing issues, but I'm hopeful that everything will be worked out as the series progresses. I'm really here for queer magical teens and I'm excited to see what happens next.

Witches of Silver Lake, Vol. 1 has a gorgeous aesthetic and a promising premise, but unfortunately, it doesn’t deliver much beyond that. The worldbuilding feels shallow, the characters lack depth, and the story moves at a pace that doesn’t allow for real emotional investment. While the artwork is undeniably stunning, the plot feels more like a collection of loosely connected moments rather than a fully fleshed-out narrative. There’s potential here, but the lack of substance makes it hard to stay engaged.

the Witches of Silverlake opens on Elliot, our protag, freshly moved to a brand new town and school system after his dad's recent suicide and Elliot's subsequent attempt. his mom is the principal and, at the beginning, understandably worried about him. (she kinda disappears from the story later on and stops texting to check in with Elliot, but who am I to judge her parenting style.)

Elliot brings a black tourmaline crystal with him to class, which apparently belonged to his father and still reminds Elliot of fond memories. he's set it down on his desk when the girl sitting next to him goes to try and touch it and bam! the crystal lights up like a touch lamp. Elliot crams the crystal in his pocket and skedaddles out of class but honestly doesn't seem particularly surprised, just a bit weirded out.

the girls from class corner him later and introduce themselves as Alex and Rachel. they just straight up announce to Elliot that they're witches and they think he might be a witch too. (I struggled a little with this plot point. magic was clearly not a commonly known concept and Elliot didn't appear to have any prior knowledge of it, but he reacts so calmly to this reveal and just 100% goes with the flow. I guess we're supposed to assume that Elliot is cool with it bc he's been suffering from some super violent, HD nightmares of strangers get McMurdered in strange places; so what's magic to add on top of that? but idk, it felt weird and forced to me.)

Alex and Rachel insist that Elliot come with them and meet the rest of the coven, which includes Tobias, Kara, and Dominic "Dom". they are all apparently new to witchcraft (I have zero idea how the coven came together in the first place considering their minimal knowledge, but I guess that'll be addressed in a future volume?) but they want to do an initiation ceremony for Elliot and they're all very excited to have him. they crowd together into one of the girls' sheds for this process and all share their secret desires; to have power, to never be surprised again, to be seen as beautiful as they are. it's all very sweet and touchy-feely.

unfortunately, while the coven is bonding and having a merry time elsewhere, there is a suspicious person who is apparently communing with demons and theoretically wants Elliot's powers. (I think? I couldn't quite put my finger on what that dude was all about, but I will give him full points for style. he definitely embraces the "is that a cult member or an old time racist?" aesthetic.) he smooshes the demon into a crystal and then sends that crystal to Elliot via a suspicious gift box, for some presumably malicious purpose.

overall I liked the story and I'm interested in seeing a second volume but it didn't blow me out of the water. I wanted more character development; it felt like everything that genuinely intrigued me got gently nudged off to the side while the plot went careening onward.

some of my favorite bits of this though were the character profiles at the very end (do not read them first, they are full of spoilers lol) and the art style. I absolutely loved the art! everybody was so amazingly expressive and I am particularly fond of the way the artist draws eyes and eyelashes. also, Tobias' whole vibe and wardrobe is top shelf and you call tell the artist really put some thought and pizzazz into his outfits.

4/5 stars

(this is just me venting about Rachel lol but it does spoil some of the plot so read at your own risk)

Thanks Netgalley and Legendary Comics for this eARC, these opinions are my own. I really enjoyed this! Elliot just moved to LA after dealing with tragedy in his life. Upon arriving he begins to see things and when something unexplainable happens he’s approached by two girls from school. They’re witches and Elliot is too, he joins the coven of five. They establish their magic and they start seeing the benefits but it’s not with its risks. And what’s worse the risks seem to be singling Elliot out. Can the coven figure out what is going on? This had all the things I like magic, demons, and of course high school drama! I loved that Elliot found the coven but not just any coven, a coven of queer people! Each unique in their own way! I also love that their magic is unique to them as individuals as well! Simon Curtis and Stephanie Son did a fantastic job with this! I can’t wait to see what happens in volume 2 and there’s still so long before volume one comes out! Highly recommend if you like magic! Can’t wait to read it again!

Talk about a fast read! Thanks NetGalley for the ARC.

I loved this comic. It immediately gave us a reference from “mean girls” and it definitely gives off “the craft” vibes. There are mentions of suicide so that could be triggering for some. There is some gore but it isn’t on every page. The story is of a young student who is in high school and moves to LA when his mom becomes a vice principal at a new school. He makes friends on the first day, finds out he has powers, and things go haywire from there. It was a load of fun to read. I can’t wait to see more.

ARC provided by NetGalley!

This was such a blast - I had requested it awhile ago on NetGalley then saw it being promoted at Librarycon and wanted to read it even more. By the time I was approved I had kind of forgotten about it and was reading it just to read…and I LOVED it!! I had recently read The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and this gave me the same vibes. The bone chilling illustrations of the red demon haunts me a little and the grotesque deaths in it as well. I love love love the characters and always support (almost) entirely queer casts lol. The story itself is intriguing and very engaging although confusing at times. My assumption is this is on purpose to gain more intrigue since we aren’t really sure what the demons want with Elliot. I especially loved the character bios at the end, normally I skim over those but these were actually super helpful and made me even more excited for the future. I want to see their powers and what is in the works for them!! For sure adding to our library 🧙‍♀️

I absolutely loved the artwork and plot line of the book, but it was a bit lacking. The plot line was very solid but I feel as though it could be more in depth and fleshed out. At times it felt as though I was missing crucial information. Despite this it was a fun and relaxing quick read. I loved the diversity of the characters and the overall vibes of them! Just wish there was more of it. Definitely reads as a debut novel but not necessarily in a bad way.

Thank you to NetGalley and Legendary Comics for a copy of The Wicthes of Silverlake Volume One in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this graphic novel so much! I really liked the characters and the art style is beautiful. Plus, the story is super interesting, though at times a bit morbid. It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time!

Eli has just moved to LA and ends up joining a coven of Witches, what a first day. What starts out as simple fun quickly turns into a waking nightmare. Death follows the witches around every corner and Elliot seems to be at the center of it all. The friends must hone their magic and work together if they want to have any hope of stopping the evil forces pursuing them.

The cliffhanger this story ended on will have me anxiously awaiting the second volume, which probably won't even be coming out for another 2 years! I can't wait for more of this story!

This is a superb graphic novel! We follow Elliott as he moves to a new school and is accepted into the friendship group of kids who don’t quite fit in with the rest of the pupils, and he soon discovers that not only are they witches each with particular abilities, but he has powers too. Together they unwittingly unleash a dark magic, with spellbinding consequences.

This book is just great! I adore the diverse characters, the plot is pacey and engaging, and the artwork by Stephanie Son is perfect. There’s a retro 90s feel about the panels, and I know that fans of witchy 90s tv/film will love this. Together Son and Curtis have created an incredible novel and I’m delighted that it’s a series.

Many thanks NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this great book, I’ll certainly be preordering this.

This is actually a 3.5 rating, but rounded up to a four rating because of the potential to the story. However, there are a few bumps in it where things do not flow smoothly and/or jump to "the next scene." It is not for weak stomach as there is blood, body parts and a few trigger moments (a car crash, before the story starts a suicide, even some of Elliot's dreams can be disturbing). The idea of magic is real is not new, but there are a few fresh characters (all but one character seems to be queer in the coven) and modern. Curious about book two, but not completely sure I will go onto it. The illustrations are a good support to the text and help move the story along and sometimes fleshing out a scene you might not be completely sure of.

This was interesting, but not in the best way. It feels very much like a rehash of the movie The Craft. The group of kids is bigger, and there are multiple genders, but this is a retelling of the Craft, with a tad bit of Something is killing the children thrown in. It’s not a bad story, but it jumps, frequently. The ideas are mostly smooth, but the action goes forward, jumps, goes forward, jumps etc. That is annoying. There is not time to develop a feel for the characters of how they feel about the situations taking place around them. Overall, this is a good start, but I will reserve more judgement until the next volume is released. This could either go on to become a great series, or flush itself-down the toilet.

(2.4) The problematic author’s note sets a weird tone revealing opportunistic motivation for writing the entire volume (which is just a queer retelling of a familiar movie ). The art was clean and expressive, and the representation is great. But the note diverts meaning while forcing the reader to choose a side. I’m electing to not finish the series.

This was a fun first book in the series. Elliot is the new kid and quickly befriends a really cool group of people that just happen to be be a coven. It turns out magic is real, but unfortunately so are demons that keep stalking the coven and murdering people around them. This book was a bit gorier than I expected, actually. Obviously, since this is volume one, we don't have that many answers yet, but I am curious about how the story will develop from here. And I enjoyed the diverse cast a lot!

I received an eARC through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Dark and twisting, coupled with captivating illustrations, this is a fantasy that will grip readers from start to finish.

An interesting group of characters, that you really want to learn more about, and a mysterious plot that leaves you on the edge of your seat.

If you are wary of a little gore, this may not be for you.
