After their ramen fight, Gordon and Arisa are off to continue exploring and eating whatever comes their way. But can the chill vibe of our freewheeling foodies hold out against the demands of serialized storytelling?

Another volume of Mad Snacks Beyond Hungerdome, and it can’t quite reach the buoyant silliness of the first volume, sadly, although don’t worry, you’ll get the classic naked girl in water shot early on in case you were unaware which genre you were reading.

Despite this having more of a narrative than the first story, it doesn’t hang together half as well. It’s a little too talky, although I appreciate the very rational explanation of why Arisa is a bottomless stomach, and the story in question just isn’t that interesting.

We knew Gordon was ex-military, but then to toss in his subordinates, some of whom we’ve seen, who are all weird and unique in some way? That’s a new one for shonen manga (cough). Arisa is a secret project and her younger sister gets introduced (mercifully not used for fan service), all pretty standard.

It picks up towards the end, but not especially. I have more tolerance than I normally would just because the action is also clearly aping American action movie cliches and I don’t mind those callbacks. If you think Gordon is going to meet the guy who built his truck and the phrase ‘I’ve made some modifications’ isn’t going to pop up, well, I just don’t know…

There’s a chapter that basically boils down The Treasure of the Sierra Madre into Cliff’s Notes (shame as this would have been much more interesting than anything else if it had been stretched further) that ludicrously ends with our heroes walking away from an explosion. The mangaka knows what they want from the action, if nothing else.

Which is not to say it isn’t fun, it is, but the first volume was way, way more engaging. This is just mostly story with food digressions, whereas we had the reverse before. And, given my previous thoughts on fantastic (read: impossible) cooking, saying that the narrative is less interesting than that is a big red flag.

The art work is still good, there’s a two page spread towards the end that I would charitably label spectacular at conveying size and scale. It’s not that this volume doesn’t have the right ingredients, but the blend is off.

3 stars - I want to see the cliffhanger resolve, so I will give this another shot. In today’s ‘life isn’t cheap’ economy, however, it’s definitely going to be on the bubble to slide off my reading list if it doesn’t come together a bit better.

Oh, the young lady spends most of this volume "covered" at least she is not ripping off her clothes screaming "I'm Hot!" While I am interested that there seems to be an actual not food related plot forming here, the weird animals / food it turns out was more interesting. The writer is really playing up the annoying naked lady being dumb as a rock. But instead of just I don't know having her go it was just an act they introduce naked lady's "younger" sister. The 8 year old is super smart.

I don't know, I spent money on this, at this point I'm just here to watch the train wreck.
One star held up by the art. I mean any Manga where I can still tell everyone apart just be looking at the page gets a better rating.

This was such a great volume! I always love the cooking scenes and this volume was no different. We were introduced to some colorful characters and some interesting foods. I'm very intrigued by the backstory and I can't wait for the next volume to see what else we learn. Great volume!

Fun story as long as you ignore the naked girl. This manga is aimed at adults, has a middle aged mc, and it has a 17 year old girl naked most of the time drawn in a oversexualized way. This aspect of it is creepy.

I love how it’s not just about food truck. There’s a lot of variety to be had chapter to chapter. Some of the cooler things is that the MC and other characters are older guys and have a look like they’ve seen some things. So much mystery and intrigue with the military backstory for Gordon and Arisa being something not of this world so to speak. Has a feel of cowboy bepop and older series liken to that which is a nice change of pace for me. Definitely can’t wait to see how this continues. I will say that as someone who likes gratuitous fanservice and nudity, this doesn’t have that in spades but it still is very tasteful.

Recommend this series especially for people who like older anime series like cowboy bepop and samurai champloo.

Starts more funny but confusing than the last one. Why does the sword guy let them go—just because he hurt the girl on accident? Who was the food truck driver ordering? I figured he didn’t still have military connections since he seemed to leave when they didn’t want him to and he should be able to control his own armed truck? Anyway, there we learn Arisa can bleed yet has the strength to bend swords.

Anyway, it’s soon back to exploring seas turned to deserts and volcanos, lounging in springs. The crabs and pearl-producing snails are a cute addition. And so is Arisa’s sister the army is sending out to find her! She looks like a tan, blonde L.O.L. doll and seems designed by lookalike Colonel Sarah. She is much more intelligent if not robotic. Actually, she sounds a bit like the food truck driver. Coincidence, just military behavior, or somehow more related?

The transitions in this book aren’t clear enough. I keep flipping back paige is thinking I miss some thing when I didn’t. Are some things outside of black panels in a dream? Is the grenade not too close to the food truck? Is he better from his cold and had a war flashback and fainted? The main characters spend so much time together but never ask each other about their pasts even though it would help either of them, a glaring tank rather than elephant in the room.

I do like the design and pageantry of the new characters, how often we pick up educational tidbits along the way, like about rust and tree roots, and it ends on a good cliffhanger—but not too much so.

I absolutely love this series. It’s so much fun. I can’t wait for the final volume. I’m so sad it’s so short. Also, it may make your stomach growl while reading it. 😉 I highly recommend this series if you like comedic, mysterious post apocalyptic stories that include yummy noms.

I read this for the Manga Freak-a-thon ‘22!!

There's something about the silly nature of this manga series that keeps me going. Definitely not the greatest... but entertainment nonetheless. I enjoyed the little bits of the main plot we got in this one, I could have used more. I'll be reading on to follow these characters.

The second volume of Crazy Food Truck has all the elements that made the first so fun, and continues to expand the cast of characters while unravelling the central mystery. The chemistry between Gordon and Arisa really shines here, and I continue to love the unique creatures of this world.

Loved the world building and artwork.
There were a few moments where I felt that didn’t really drive the story forward and slowed the pacing down.
Maybe they’ll be called back in volume 3.
Arisa was still Arisa.
Which, if you like ditzy and bubbly characters, is a plus.

This is silly. But somehow compelling. Funny. With odd world-building. And with odd focus on food. And yet there are hints of a plot and secret things that will make this all make sense. Because really doesn't all make sense now. 3.5 of 5

i wish i could like this series, and i want to know what happens now that we left off on a cliffhanger. with one of the main characters being underage and heavily sexualized, i just can't seem to enjoy it. which is disappointing because the art style is great and the story was finally getting somewhere in this volume.

Extrait :

I am now a bit more confused about the plot. There seems to be a military organization that has set itself on “protecting the world” but what is it protecting it from? Major Kyle just repeats this a few times but the lack of knowing what or why it needs to be protected makes the importance feel shallow.

We have also learned what Arisa is, she is a Doll and apparently this particular military organization is into child soldiers as her sister who is 8 is also a Doll. The importance of why and how they came to be is still in the dark, which is kind of a bummer.

And the new antagonist (who will most likely be a one off antagonist) that was introduced at the end felt out of place, especially his final two panels where he is talking about “protecting his dears”. The only other scene we have of him is him taking Arisa as hostage (which he stripped her down and hung her on a cross because that was necessary). I don’t know who he is talking about (I have suspicions and if I’m right that’s going to be annoying) and why what he is doing is important. The plot came in so late to the end of the volume that it left me more annoyed then excited for the next volume.

Arisa isn’t any better, she seems to be a bit smarter in this volume but overall the dumb, naive silly girl personality is annoying. This volume was also more food focused and less action and plot centered, the balance between the two isn’t very good.

4.5⭐️

With Arisa showing new emotions and responses outside of what is considered normal for a doll, Vald is determined more than ever to figure out what makes her different and to get her back within their possession. Though that might be their goal, they’ll have to put in some effort because Arisa and Gordon are on a mission to find even more delicacies for her to try. Up on the menu this week is crab, boar, and to everyone’s hope, sushi.

The fact that half of this series is a type of military dystopian story, and the other is a weird sing a long version of the Food Network really makes for one hell of a combination. I appreciate how it creates this beautifully balanced story where you have high action or very serious moments and then you can easily find yourself watching the characters enjoy a new flavor they’ve never experienced or haven’t had in the longest time because of the world they now live in. The incorporation of flashbacks from Gordan’s past in the military also really helps make you enjoy the character so much more when he’s just trying to find a little joy in life. I was chuckled from so many moments in this volume, and I'm honestly so excited for the next one to come out shortly. Overall, it’s a grand old time just like the first one.

Do you like how narratives are like, "Maybe living a full life and dying soon is better than living a life in a lab and dying later," as if that's a narrative that we can all nod along with?

I mean, you COULD just, you know, moderate. Take SOME chances, but maybe also take calculated chances that draw a line between enjoyable experience and danger level. You COULD ride a motorcycle without a helmet, but you COULD ride one WITH a helmet, and I think most of us would quantify that as "living."

However long your life is, there's actually going to only be ONE day where there is, in fact, no tomorrow. So living like there is no tomorrow is kind of dumb, statistically speaking. Living each day like there IS a tomorrow will be correct the majority of the time unless you die within the first couple days of life.

Even if you only make it 4 days, living like there is no tomorrow will be incorrect 75% of your life.

I've been alive for like 15,000 days. One out of 15,000? Those are terrible odds.

Gordon and Arisa have been cornered by Major Kyle! How will they ever esc- Oh... apparently their food truck (named Jonathan) has an autopilot function as well as a gun mount. So they escape to continue their food adventures across the desert.

Meanwhile, Major Kyle is given new orders and a new teammate: Myna, Arisa's sister... who is 8.

Please! I'm begging you, don't lewd the clearly underaged girl. Arisa's age could be (uncomfortably) fudged into early 20s but there's ABSOLUTELY NO way you can justify an 8-year-old.

Anyway, the actual plot did something interesting and it's even including some backstory characters. (And I'm becoming more and more convinced that this "story" is actually someone's D&D campaign.)

This series has 3 volumes.

In this volume, we get some backstory on Gordon, and Arisa's sister, Myna, is introduced. There's more intrigue going on in this volume, as we get a better look at the military and get some hints to what they're up to, and we see more of the future world. I appreciate that about the combination road trip/on the run aspect of the story; it shows us interesting things about the world the characters live in without feeling contrived or info-dumpish. We also meet some of Gordon's old colleagues, and the food truck gets an upgrade. Some bits were a little uneven, but I'm enjoying this story still. There's only one more volume in the series, however, and I hope things don't end up getting rushed trying to fit in Arisa's background story; I want her to have a good ending. Now, where's volume 3?

It just didn't have the same impact as Crazy Food Truck, Vol. 1, we got left with what was felt like a pretty big cliffhanger and conclusion to why the girl is running away, only for nothing to be mentioned and the two travelling in the food truck again.

We get a brief flashback that half asses the explanation and then some story about a prince and another cliffhanger which better actually go somewhere this time.

We're also introduced to a sister character who now travels with the army guys, so we have two parallel stories about hungry girls travelling with dudes. It's a fun premise but it needs to figure itself out as it should feel like filler so early on in a series.

Wait, I think I now see what this is. It's not an action comic, but a cook book with several recipes and fishing and hunting tips. They should remove all that dialogue and focus on the recipes we surely all want to learn and try out for ourselves. At least now I know why the story sucks 10-ton camel pig balls. Oops, spoiler! That's an animal from the comic. Either way, instead of getting me hungry, it puts me to sleep.

I received a free digital ARC of this manga from Viz Media via NetGalley. Gordon and Arisa are still traveling the desert in search of tasty treats to cook. They enjoy desert sauna time, catch a pig for pork and go in search of sushi. Meanwhile, Arisa’s little sister is working with Kyle and we still don’t know what military secret created the sisters. We are starting to see more of the post apocalyptic wasteland and I enjoy the artwork and atmosphere. I will continue this series because I’m clueless as to where the story is going, but I’m interested enough to continue. Less fan service in this volume than volume 1, but still some.

In this post apocalyptic, waterless world, Gordon drives a food truck. A superb chef, accompanied by a wild woman named Arista who is being chased by an army, he looks for the perfect ingredients to create his meals. The leader of the army seeking Arista is now saddled with Arista’s younger sister. For varied reasons, the two adversaries are descending on a small, unincorporated town. The results bring disaster and leave readers wanting the sequel. Great reading. Includes questionable recipes!

Another solid installment of the series. I wasn't as blown away as I was in the first installment. Feel like this was a building block for the final book in the series - keen to see how this ends.
I again love the world building and environment - the artwork in this is wonderful - would be amazing in colour!

This volume goes a lot deeper into the backstory and introduces some new characters, including one who I think will play a major role later. Volume 2 seemed to be more about the history of the characters instead of introducing the post-apocalyptic world like volume 1. Still a fun ride and I'm kinda sad my library only has one more book in the series.

More fantastic locations and fantastical fauna, more delicous meals, more kinetic action. The second volume of Crazy Food Truck is just as fun as the first. The cast expands, mysteries begin to be unraveled. The artwork is fantastic, the story strange and compelling, the characters fun and interesting. Good stuff.
