Shy Miwa has always dreamed of finding love, but living in small-town Japan made finding the right match difficult—especially since she likes girls! Even going away to college didn’t seem to help, until one day her outgoing classmate Saeko suggests they might as well start dating each other since it’s not like either of them has other options.
Getting over an ex is hard, especially when you’re still sleeping with them! It takes Miwa and Saeko a while to let go of that final aspect of their relationship, but now they are both ready to move on and give new love a chance.
Saeko continues to date Yuria, Miwa keeps looking for love in… various places. Except the one space she probably could. But it’s all easy from this point, surely? Well, Saeko is getting a taste of how she feels to others and Miwa’s misfires keep piling up. And it’s a lot easier to say you’re done with the past than to make that a reality.
Interestingly, I don’t think this is the best manga I’ve read, but it is the one that I think is the absolute top tier for portraying the complexity of human emotions and the issues in figuring out who you are.
Things are less messy this time around in some aspects, but still plenty messy in others. Miwa and Saeko’s friendship is a welcome continuation, but there’s so much regret between the two of them that I will not be shocked if they come back around to one another, having grown to the point where they truly can relationship. The omake drops enough casual foreshadowing, plus a couple of very pointed moments.
Until that time, however, the challenges continue. Saeko has always been an odd duck, and it’s fascinating to see her push back against things like her coming of age ceremony, yet still feel compelled to hide the fact that she’s dating another female. She’s openly against the norm, but only as much as it doesn’t garner any blowback from society.
She and Yuria turn out to be really in sync over the worst stuff, including physical affection. The two of them trying to figure out sex proves to be a bit of an eye-opener for Saeko regarding her own behaviour. There’s a lot of love here, but it feels a lot different than the previous dynamic between our two leads and it’s a perfect little bit of nuance.
The question of intimacy is one that rarely gets addressed, including the possibility of a relationship that doesn’t involve sex at all, so seeing two people who at least say they love each other but don’t want to necessarily have sex for various reasons is absolutely fascinating new ground to see covered in a romance.
Meanwhile, Miwa is growing closer and closer to Tamaki, the generally unsmiling junior. This relationship feels much more organic, but it’s hamstrung by the participants. Miwa’s ‘many bitten, many shy’ experiences keeps her pushing back and staying closeted and this leads to incredibly mixed messages (including one very funny moment in a volume full of them).
Once Tamaki finds out Miwa’s a lesbian, well, it actually doesn’t get much better, but they have a much stronger chemistry than Saeko and Yuria in the moment to moment. They’re the more obvious fit, although Saeko and Yuria manage to get themselves at least partially figured out by the end. Which is far more movement than Miwa makes anywhere - the way time moves in this story feels especially relentless.
It’s not just complicated, it’s well written. As I said, it’s not the best writing I’ve seen, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be good. And it is very, very good. I always start a volume of this thinking it’s just okay, but wind up absolutely taken with it by the end.
5 stars - not every moment is perfect, but this does so much different than most romances, not just by being about two women and set in college, that it’s impossible to overstate what an excellent series it’s turned into.
It's all noodling and canoodling as the book meanders around to show new relationships starting to take shape. It's sort of nice but also sort of moving toward boring as more distance is put between the core couple that drew me into the book. The side characters just aren't strong enough to spackle the gaps left in the story now.
Both protagonists have matured a great deal, and while in some respects they are ostensibly more distant from each other now more than ever, in other ways they are much closer. It’s an interesting dynamic, especially with the background of college band activities in the forefront once again with the main characters now being seasoned second-year veterans.
Ok we’re coming out of the mess now. Seeing what both girls have learnt from their fuckups and how they’re applying that to new relationships is making me feel so soft and warm and proud of them. I hope Yuria and Saeko can navigate their ✨topping troubles✨ because they are the actual cutest together and I’m rooting for them so hard.
the way i love this series but im not feeling these volumes where they're with other people even though it's nice they're learning how to communicate better
I KNOW I said I'd stop reading this manga but I LIED because I'm too curious and also I have a big fat lesbian crush on saeko but anyways, I was a hater and this volume is really nice
This volume is a lot more wholesome than angsty, but I appreciate how it depicts getting to learn about the person you're dating and their issues. Although, those characters still need to learn that therapy exists...
Top and bottom labels?? Really?? I already hate those words when reading BL. Now I have to keep up with that in GL too? 😑 To all queer authors: most queer people are switches. Get it right. Ain’t that hard.
Okay, the volume itself was kinda good tho. Same with the last volume, I’m surprised I’m actually starting to like this. Miwa and Saeko not being a couple feels just so refreshing!
I also love the relationship between Saeko and her girlfriend. It’s nice to see a healthy relationship, which I honestly didn’t expect from Saeko. And Saeko totally deserves someone who doesn’t like to be touched as well and wants to be the “top”. Nice karma.
Miwa’s and t relationship is also slowly building up... Tbh, not sure if I shop them though. T looks really young. Even tho they’re only about one year apart, they look like they’re ten years apart. Maybe that’s just the short hair on Miwa, but yea. I do like seeing them together and I love their friendship; I also love honest and blunt characters like t. I just can’t really see anything sexual between them. 🤔 Well, at least for now, perhaps.
Miwa describing the cat to her coworker when asked what her crush looks like atm, was the best tho 🤣🤣
AAHHh FINALLYYY it arrived so so ssososoooooo happy
i rly liked it i was so upset when saeko got into a new relationship and when miwa went thru her heavy heavy post break iup depression but now things are looking up again !!!!! the freshman girl is so cute !!!hehehe i can def see miwa falling for her (hope she end w saeko tho!)
Wow, only took me 6 months to finish this! Set this down about a quarter of the way through with the *iconic* panel of “…will you let me top you?” Glad I was finally able to finish in time to order 8 and pre-order 9 as a treat to myself. Getting a tad convoluted with characters but that could just be because I read these so far apart.

Really continuing to enjoy this series; glad that we're in a part where it's 'how do I learn in this new relationship?' and that they can be awkward ex's together. Even if they don't get back together, I enjoy seeing them grow.
The story continues to be interesting, and I like how the characters have realistically complicated lives and relationships, without resorting to the sort of petty drama and escalation that often drives serialized fiction.
I said the last volume was resetting the baseline. Volume 7 is making great use of this soft reset to develop new plots that expand upon the themes of the series so far. What Volume 6 didn't have time to develop Volume 7 picks up and confirms to us that this new direction has promise.
some really good stuff in this volume with sae learning to communicate in her new relationship. also relatable closeted dyke moment of describing a family pet when someone asks about the "guy" you like.
Starting to warm up a bit more to the pairings introduced in Volume 6. Tamaki and Yuria are starting to feel more like fleshed out characters, and I find myself eager to find out what they're going to do next.
love how Saeko and Miwa has matured. Their new relationships honestly look so promising, and I like this time they spend away from each other. Also, Miwa just cutting off Tamaki like that is so heartbreaking, let them get together already.
I fucking love seeing Saeko feel happy, that last moment of her and Yuria in the bad just melted me so hard. I feel so much warmness in my heart for her.
