I love it when Mizuho Kusanagi focuses more on the strong ties between Yona, Hak, and Soo-Won because those chapters give me conflicting emotions in the best way possible. Once again, this trio proved to be a force to reckon with when they work together and it's obvious that their love for each other is still there buried beneath the anger and pain. The most unforgettable part for me was the scene where Yona asked Soo-Won about Hak. Everything about it was brilliantly done.

I’m so so glad I waited until Volume 38 was published to read this one because that ending KILLED ME enough that I ended up reading both volumes 37 AND 38 in one evening and then didn’t go to sleep until after midnight because my brain was too hyped up. Oops. But so worth it, lol!

Oh my goodness are things INTENSE! 😱😬 I have a feeling this war is going to last for several volumes and just yikes you can literally FEEL how high the stakes are with everything going on right now. Not to mention all the fight scenes are awesome and so intense! I LOVE the way the mangaka draws! It’s amazing how much EMOTION she can draw in just one image—it’s truly an awesome gift.

And Hak going out there to fight is just…!!!!! Dude, that first panel (I think the pages are 25 and 26) where it’s just him on the horse and then his eyes!!!! 😱😱😱I don’t know how the mangaka draws emotion SO WELL but it’s freaking awesome and I LOVE it!!!! Not to mention Hak’s struggles to do what he can to save and protect those he loves and the nation as a whole…!!!! 😩 My poor baby!!!! He goes through SO MUCH and he’s amazing and I love him and just how much he cares which makes him fight so hard even when it looks hopeless ahhhhhh!!!!! He’s just amazing!!!!!

And the note from Jaeha to Captain Gi-Gan cracked me up! 🤣🤣 Such a Jaeha thing to write! And gotta say General Rahn creeps me out, lol. It’s the way he’s drawn! I have no idea why but he looks like a woman who escaped from an insane asylum. 🤣 Not fond of his design BUT it does fit his kinda wacky personality so I guess it works. 😂

And Su-Won’s a moron. (Sorry to all his fans out there) He was being SUCH an absolute idiot and I won’t change my mind on that, haha. He just needs to keep up his end of the deal and stop being so stupid! 😡

And the ending…!!!! 😭😭😭 Nooooo it broke me and is the whole reason I HAD to keep reading to 38! Otherwise I would have just stayed up beyond midnight worrying myself to death about things, haha. And I can’t say much more because of spoilers, but again the artwork just says and shows SO MUCH and I know I keep blabbing about it but it’s just SO GOOD and POWERFUL!!!!

Sooo glad I waited this long to read it with my friend Laura because even though it wreaked me it was totally worth it!

"I don't want her to cry alone anymore. So many people care about her. It just shows that she kept going without giving up."

To the friend on Twitter who STRONGLY suggested I wait to read volume 37 and read it with volume 38…THANK YOU! One of the best bookish decisions I've made because WOW! That ending was…something else.

So short story! It's funny(?) reading this volume when I compare it to the binge read I did of volumes 1-36 last summer. At that time, I struggled with reading Yona at first but gradually got hooked and ended up really really really loving it! But then we got into the politics in the later volumes and it was the first time I found myself in a position of loving the characters very deeply, but not the story.

However, when I read this volume, it was like the "blinders" (best word I can think of but not sure that's the right word?) had fallen off and questioned how I struggled with the politics before because while I would never say they were boring, it just wasn't my "cup of tea" so to speak. Yet I didn't feel that way at all when reading! Not sure if it's because I've read more titles that have politics playing roles in the story or what, but it was interesting to me to see that some of the past struggles I had with the series were not relevant when reading this volume. Granted, I WAS like, "Um, what happened last volume again? I don't remember..." (First time I read that little summary paragraph in the beginning so I could be refreshed on everything! LOL!) I did reread the previous volume (and some of 35!) and truly this story is just as engaging as it ever was!

I'm pretty sure I said it in my last review, but this story honestly keeps getting more and more intense with every volume, with this one taking the cake thus far. VERY high stakes and was shocked that truly no one has "plot armor" because OH MY GOODNESS DID THAT *SERIOUSLY* HAPPEN?! :o :o :o

Despite that though, I LOVED that there was a strong focus on Hak and Yun! I also loved how we got to see saw some older characters and them having a brief comeback. Kusanagi never forgets her characters and deeply appreciate that as a reader because it reminds me that I never know when someone from manyyyy volumes ago will show up again! <3 Also I deeply enjoyed seeing Yona and Su-won work together! That was VERY satisfying and seeing Yona teach him something he didn't know because internally all I could do was smirk and think, "Yeah, don't underestimate our Princess." Granted, I liked Su-won this volume! It's just a little irksome when he is in alliance with her but refuses to tell her anything. :p

That ending was truly heart-wrenching! Definitely off to read volume 38!!

“This makes no sense. A bloodied, worn out, armorless pauper, that’s on the verge of collapse. And yet, somehow, he is majestic to behold.”

What. Was. That. Ending?!

Just when I think there's nothing else this manga can throw out that can hurt me, there is something that it throws at me that hurts me more than anything.

Volumes that are mostly focused on Hak are always so full of sentiment and the same passion that he carries in his vein and, thus, they make me get sucked right into the story and feel everything that everyone feels.

The little bit we get with the South Kai generals was pretty interesting but I particularly liked Ra-an and his appreciation of Hak even though they are enemies.

As always, Yona and Soo-won's relationship is nothing if not heartbreakingly complicated, messed up, and so incredibly bittersweet. I can never quite make my mind as to how I want them to interact but whatever this whole thing has been is not it.

Even through everything, with my heart shattering in so many different ways and my emotions nothing but a rolling mess, nothing prepared me for the emotional blow that this volume would give me. I might not think the worst, but it is still not something that didn't stop my heart, chilled my veins, and shocked me to my core.

“Stop. We can’t just suddenly become childhood friends again.”

This volume is focused on Hak and the way he helps the army on the frond side of the war. And what an incredible character he is. He's so unbelievably strong that I still can't quite believe he has not been confirmed to have supernatural forces at this point.

The pace slows down a lot in this volume. I usually don't mind it, even more if it serves to character building. But I feel like it didn't bring much to the plot or the characters, and the chapters could have been much more condensed. At times it was even frustrating because I couldn't pinpoint the direction the author chose to go.

The very last chapter was incredible in comparison. It is very tragic and heartbreaking, and everyone is worried about where Hak is. The way Yona is always ready to put her own worries aside to cheer up on everyone else makes me so sad, but at the same time it makes me love her so much more. She's building an armour of steel around her and is slowly using her knowledge to help build strategies with Soowon. I especially loved seeing Soowon and Yona talk more, especially about Hak. No matter what, these three are my favorite thing about this manga, by far.

No matter how outnumbered I am, no matter how my body screams in pain... this is my only path forward.

NO HAK NOOOOOOOO

South Kai is attacking Kin Province/Earth Tribe lands. Naturally, Hak can't just stand by and watch, especially with General Geun-Tai still recovering from his injuries (I hope he survives!) so Hak helps the Earth Tribe defend Kin Province. Anyone who reads this volume and still doesn't like Hak is heartless.

Also, I love that Su-won is starting to notice how smart and capable Yona is.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! What a roller coaster!! Throughout this whole volume and chaotic events, there was a feeling of impending doom. Hak felt it too. I’m literally crying right now!!! It’s amazing how much I love and care for these fictional characters. I NEED VOLUME 38. I am absolutely crushed.
