Saving her was instinctive. But do I have the right to tell another person what to do with their life?
I usually read just three volumes of "shorter" manga series at a time--at 20 volumes, Call of the Night is on the short side for a shonen manga--but I wanted to see how the situation between Kyoko, Nazuna, and Ko played out. I wasn't disappointed.

Not many people go through life changes as extreme as Kyoko did, or at least not all at once. She had one ten years ago, and she's having one now, as she learns to reconcile herself with a future where she isn't a slayer anymore. She has regrets, feels like the last ten years were a waste, but at least she isn't thinking that self-annihilation is the answer anymore.

I had a theory about what was happening with Ko when he healed from a potentially mortal wound in one day. My thought was that since Nazuna is a half-vampire, that he's becoming a creature that's similar to her rather than a full vampire. That may still be true, but Kyoko's theory has more to do with Ko's emotions at the moment.

The very basic overview of Plutchik's Wheel of emotions (if you've watched "Inside Out," you'll be familiar with some of it) in this volume made me skeptical about it. I find the idea of putting the whole of human emotional experience into chart form rather distasteful. Maybe I'll look into it a bit more later. Maybe it's useful in ways that I can't discern from a few panels in a manga volume. Maybe. ^_^;

Another change in this volume is that Rila breaks up with Ko. I found that whole arc rather odd, but it's kind of cool that we the readers don't end up knowing her any better than Ko does. Sometimes ships pass in the night, and that's all right.

[CW: suicide attempt]

With her plan in motion, Kyoko is ready to kill Ko to get what she wants from Nazuna. Or is she? While Chekhov would be proud of her efforts, Ko’s left feeling a little perforated, but if the whole thing takes a very strange turn, that’s nothing compared to… uh… the whole thing taking a very strange turn.

There’s nothing I can concretely put my finger on about why I consistently love Call of the Night so much, since on paper it doesn’t look like much. Which means it’s probably down to how enjoyable it is to watch these characters interact. Rare is the series where I feel like the plot doesn’t need to show up, but this is one of them.

Not that the plot is bad! With nothing left to lose and a singleminded goal in sight, Kyoko has pulled out all the stops to try and get what she wants by way of revenge against the vampires for killing her parents. Everything has boiled down to this moment and it nearly works out.

Except, as this is a story that’s largely focused on growing up more than anything else, Kyoko’s plan is nonsensically impractical, and she knows it, but she’s doing it anyway because she’s so immature that it’s all she’s got left. The juxtaposition between her hard smoking private eye facade and her as the teenager who never grew up is expressed perfectly.

So when Ko has her number, again showing that in some ways he’s the most mature person in the whole manga, she decides to take a different approach and that’s when things get messy. But then they don’t and that’s a whole other mystery.

Said mystery might be the least interesting part of the book, as it involves a lot of emotional spectrum analysis and maybe a little nudge nudge at how Ko is growing up bit by bit. It feels more of a handwave than anything else, so, not the most impressive concept.

But, hey, the rest of this is pure gold. Once we clear the plot sections we are left with the old saw of ‘antagonist who was too cool to get rid of is now hanging with the heroes’ and Kyoko is a strong enough character that this honestly turns out to be a great choice.

Ko and Nazuna are such a fantastic pairing and tossing Kyoko into the mix makes things even funnier. From the most awkward drinking party ever to an even more awkward moment playing rent-a-Ko, the dialogue is snappy and the jokes are flying. Being around these people is fun and it feels fun.

Yeah, no, Ko and Nazuna are no closer than ever (well, one ‘mwah’ aside), but for two kids with a lot of growing up to do that makes sense and it’ll be a good time watching them figure it all out. Nazuna’s got no better sense of this than Ko and if they aren’t precisely in love, well, they have the deep understanding of one another that leads to such things.

Until that time, well, we also get Nazuna’s hilarious departure from her brief foray going back to school and then Ko does the same, with a bittersweet yet funny wrap-up to his brief relationship with the other girl in class. Nazuna’s flashes between jealousy and egging Ko on are brilliantly funny (her reflexive head punch earlier is amazing).

This series is about change, always has been, plus a little of the aimlessness that many people feel in their lives. I enjoy watching the changes and the slow evolution with Ko and Nazuna same as I always have - they’re a classic pairing that I never get tired of.

Yeah, if this sort of low wattage conversational stuff bores you, this is not the series for you. It has always felt like any flurries of action are more a requirement than what it does best. The action and deeper plot are quite good, but they’re in no way a part of what keeps me coming back to this constantly.

5 stars - this is a manga that knows what it’s doing and how to express itself. It has heart, it has laughs, it has something to say about life, and it just gives me everything I want from it every time. Absolutely delightful.

This is a chill series to read. It doesn't disappoint but also doesn't have much going for it. People call it the lo-fi as a manga but even that aesthetic could get stale after a while.
I do care about the main characters though. And I like how slowly the story progresses in terms of the pacing of the story. But it also rushes from time to time which is annoying.

Ko(main character) is a boy who wants to turn into a vampire and in order to do that he must fall in love with one and have them suck his blood. I enjoy the detective's character development throughout the book the detective went from trying to exterminate all vampires to befriending them. She realizes there's no way to kill them all permanently, and says"It might work for a year, maybe two...but to starve every single vampire to death, humans would have to live in fear of the night for a decade"(Kotoyama 29) I feel like this book is made for people who are already familiar with manga or comics because it can get confusing at times. I really like this series and think it would be a great read for a lot of people.

Salut, comment ça va?!
Globale: 5/5
J’adore!

This series is really interesting. It started out as one thing and is becoming something very different and both parts are good. The characters are fun and varied. The dynamic between our two MCs is really interesting. The main event in this volume I did not see coming and I am very interested to see how things develop.

This volume was pretty intense. It honestly makes sense why Kyoko has decided to stop her revenge plot. As she's said, she's just tired. And she feels like she wasted the last 10 years of her life.

I had a feeling the vampire who turned Kyoko's dad was Kiku. I still get a bad vibe from her, and I'm hoping Mahiru doesn't decide to turn into a vampire. At least not because of Kiku.

There's character development and so much plot, wow! The pacing of the story is just right and I don't feel like I'm being bombarded with information. I enjoyed everything about this volume, though I'm not really sure what the point of this one character is.

I really enjoy this series and the kind of twist that it does on a vampire story so I obviously will be continuing and overall this is quite exciting and the illustration style of this artist is Uneeke and has some level of simplistic action to it. That makes it beautiful.

Another great volume, focused on character development. Nice pacing, and this is bery much the end of the arc that started a few volumes ago - but not to the greater arc that started at about the same time.

Things are happening, and it all feels just right and well balanced, with great pacing.

This volume was actually pretty sad and yet very interesting. The mysteries of the past have been solved, but now there is a new mystery as to if someone may or maybe not be in love.

The slayer's mission is revealed, but she fails. Ko is shot and heals exceptionally fast, but he doesn't turn. Which vampire killed the slayer's parents?
