The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was one of my go-to shows in high school. It was one of my favorite shows and I was always tuning in for reruns🙃

The Fresh Prince Project is a well-researched cultural history filled with lots of nostalgia. The beginning of the book dives into the lives of the creators of the show and how the idea for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was sparked. I found myself much more interested when they got to the details about the show (rather than what led up to it). I learned a lot about the actors and what their experiences were like, especially Will Smith. There were so many behind-the-scenes details revealed!

I loved this book! The perfect blend of entertaining fun insights and cultural history and analysis. I was a huge Fresh Prince of Bel Air fan back in the 90s, so this hit the nostalgia sweet spot for me. I also thought it was interesting to hear about the show from the cast and crew after getting Will’s POV in his memoir last year. Some of the issues such as replacing the actress portraying Aunt Viv are addressed, but I would have liked to see a bit more depth on them. I do appreciate though that book never dips into the gossipy side. I highly recommend this one to fans of the show, or anyone looking for some 90s nostalgia with a cultural focus.

Thanks to @atriabooks for the gifted finished copy!

Good information about the making of The Fresh Prince. Not only did they talk about the actors, they talked about writers and producers, too, which made it difficult to keep track of exactly who they were talking about. I teared up as Palmer talked about fatherhood and absent fathers: “Why don’t he want me, man?” I think I remember new episodes of Fresh Prince airing, but obviously didn’t have a sense of what it meant to see a black family like this, or that they’d talk about real and universal issues like parent-child relationships. The Fresh Prince was something special, all right.

Susan Borowitz, one of the showrunners(?) of the early seasons, recalls that they had a great, talented cast. “People said we got so lucky with the cast, but it wasn’t luck, it was racism. There just weren’t many great roles for black actors at the time. There hadn’t been an explosion of black shows yet, and we could cast great actors for every part.”

The intro to “Fresh Prince” was done in 90min.

Chris Palmer's look at this classic TV show hits stores January 31, 2023. Atria Books provided an early galley for review.

As a someone who regularly watched and enjoyed the show (both on its initial run and later in reruns), I was interested to see what insights Palmer had to offer. While some of the stories were known to me, quite a few were new revelations; that made this time well-spent.

I liked that the book focused not only on the cast but also on many of the folks behind the scenes. From show creators to showrunners, the effects of decisions made were shown as they rippled across everyone involved. The reader is given a ringside seat into the ups, downs, triumphs and trials of the series.

The Fresh Prince Project is a well written book about an iconic show that ran from 1990 to 1996 on NBC. The Fresh Prince of Bel Air is one of my favorite TV shows of all time and it feels good to have a well-researched and enlightening book written about the show.

I consider myself a very educated person on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air TV show, but even I was surprised by some of the stuff I read in this book. Such as finding out that the Hudlin brothers (Reginald and Warrington) were the first people that former NBC network executive Brandon Tartikoff (among other NBC higher ups) went to as to try to create The Fresh Prince of Bel Air show. Remember, the Hudlin brothers were HOT in 1990 because of their hit film House Party. Plus, through this book I also found out that NBC and some employees within the Fresh Prince production family didn't originally want Alfonso Ribeiro to play Carlton Banks, they didn't think he was the right fit for the character.

The Fresh Prince Project was a passion project for the author Chris Palmer, and you could tell by the way it was written. Personal thoughts from Palmer on various pages of the book, impassioned writing in every chapter about the show or its social impact on TV viewers during and after the show's original run, and more. There was an even a chapter (chapter 7, Will and Carlton Explain the (Black) World) in the book where Palmer through the lens of himself and the characters of Carlton Banks and Will Smith, explained different measures of Blackness and how we as Black people generationally fall short of understanding that being Black is more than just a skin color or how we act. We as Black people are a mosaic of different cultures. That chapter was the best chapter in the book in my opinion.

One of my favorite elements of this book was that the author gave every character on the show some serious love with his research on them on and off the set as actors and people. The original Vivian played by underrated actress Janet Hubert, went through some serious on the set and off the set trials and tribulations during and after the show's run. Her story will make you think and may even anger you on the dynamics of Hollywood and their obsession with skin tone and their misguided measurement of beauty.

If there was a gripe I had with this book and I say this because the author was an expert on the show (that's part of the reason why he wrote this book), it would have been nice if he would have analyzed each season in terms of its ratings, the season by season character development of Will and the rest of the cast, as well as picking out certain episodes of each season that he liked or wanted to analyze.

In conclusion, The Fresh Prince Project is required reading for anyone who wants to understand how The Fresh Prince of Bel Air became a huge hit for NBC, its social impact on TV viewers in the 1990s, and more. I wish more writers/fans of iconic TV shows would write books on iconic TV shows of the 1980s and 1990s like Palmer did with this book.

I did win this book in a GoodReads giveaway and the copy I read is an advanced readers edition, so some of my hang ups may have been corrected before publication.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I have always thought television can make or break perspectives and comedy in particular has a way of breaking barriers in culture. I remember watching this show as a kid and you would be hard pressed to find someone in my generation who couldn’t rap the opening lyrics to the show, but at least at my age I didn’t see the progress that was being made.

I liked learning all the background about how the show came about and many of the important players in its progression, but I did find it difficult to follow at times. Not being familiar with most of the actors/writers/producers’ names, it was hard to follow when they were called different things. Alfonso, Riberio, and Alf were all the same person, and it got confusing at times. Also, at least for me, not having background in who is BEHIND a TV show, some of the roles these people played were unclear. It also felt like there were some cultural things being discussed in the book without much background. I didn’t understand every reference, and I’m 30, so if you are a younger reader you may need to do some googling to see how it connects and why such and such an event or moment was important.

Overall, a really fun and interesting non-fiction read! It makes me want to go back and watch the show with this new perspective!

This book is confusing. I’m not sure the author knew what story he wanted to tell. In no way does it explain how The Fresh Prince of Bel Air changed America’s television. We bounce back and forth between behind the scenes, the actors, executive producers who came and went each season, and the creators so much that it becomes confusing and ended up being a mess. I rated it 3 stars because when the author wrote about the things fans of the show want to know, it was thoroughly entertaining.

Ever since I watched my first ever sitcom, I’ve been wishing I could go back in time and experience the creation and the live taping of one. Odd dream I know.
I first watched the fresh prince of bel air in 2020. ( ironically the year the reunion was released in hbo).
2020 was for me, as it was for many people, one of the hardest years of my life: I got into my dream university to study art and found out it was not exactly disability friendly ( I’m a wheelchair user.) and then, as I was beginning to find my footing in this unwelcoming environment, the world shut down. Needless to say I was going through it
I was motivated to start the fresh prince by my mom and, as dramatic as it’ll sound: it found its way into my heart.
I don’t claim to know anything about black experience.
I do however know a thing or two about feeling you don’t belong and feeling obligated to prove you’re worth what’s been given to you . So I saw so much of myself in Will.
And my god, did i laugh. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much over a show. And I needed that laugh.
After i finished my first watch through of the show I so wished i could be there to experience its creation and magic .
Over the years that followed me and my mom referred to it CONSTANTLY.
So when i decided to rewatch it in the end of 2024 I had to look up ways to connect it with my other big love: reading.
You see, I’ve always wondered what the impact of this show was in a bigger scale than just myself and my mom.
Chris Palmer offers just that in this book : a study of the impact and a wave of nostalgia ( even if you weren’t born when it was aired, you’ll feel nostalgic)
I loved this book and I felt like for a few hours I got to be there to witness the magic and learn . It wasn’t a sugarcoated description of the phenomenon this show was : you learn the great and the problematic but if you’re a fan of this show or even just watching it for the first time and are curious, i recommend this book to you, with my whole chest !

I received an advance copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I'm not sure it's a book I would have picked up on my own, although the premise and cover art do appeal to me!

At the most basic level, I think the big "miss" for this book is that it can't decide what kind of book it wants to be. We have for me rather too much name-dropping, so that at times it reads like a gossip column about people I don't know. Those parts of the book were uninteresting. But we also have some really insightful and educational chapters, with just the right amount of backstory and excellent narration. I would love to read an entire book that was the sections on the history of Black TV sitcoms from this book, just expanded.

The variety of writing styles is also jarring. I can't tell if it's intentional.

I can tell an enormous amount of research went into this book, and as a casual watcher of the show in the 90s, it was very interesting to learn about how it came to air, from the concept to the casting to the development of individual episodes.

Edited to remove the (bland) gossipy sections and expand on the social forces that shaped the show and the social effects the show had on American culture, I would rate this book 4 or 5 stars.

"In West Philadelphia born and raised" Any millennial who grew up in the '90 knows the opening of the song to this iconic sitcom by heart. Produced in an age where black sitcoms could present serious social issues without lecturing the white audience Fresh Prince of Bel Air seems like a lost relic of black television in an overly preachy morass of new age sitcoms, documentaries and Netflix originals that prefer more aggressive strong arm tactics that seemed you alienate the Caucasian side of the audience.
But then again maybe the show itself realizes that it has to keep up with the Joneses, such as the darker spin-off on HBO Max titled Bel Air.
The Bel Air Project is a quick retrospective about the behind the scenes making up the show it's triumph controversies and stories behind the reoccurring gags. Who would have thought the gag of Jazz being thrown out of the Bank's house was the resolution of an argument between screenwriters. But the thing that made fresh Prince stand out from the rest was how it proved that the black community is not a monolith and how everyone has a different story and different experiences. That is something in my opinion that black sitcoms need to tackle more of today.

For the most part, I enjoyed the book, but I think it was way incomplete.

Tatyana M. Ali is mentioned a total of four times. It really stands out when there's a chapter on how every main character auditioned and got their job, but she wasn't included.

There's no mention on Daphne Maxwell Reid becoming the second Aunt Viv, even though they spent a chapter on the issues between the original Aunt Viv and Will Smith.

There's no mention that there was the fourth Banks child and how they moved him from a baby to age six or so within a year.

There's no mention about any character development aside from Will and Carleton.

The last couple of seasons are glossed over aside from a talking about a couple of episodes.

There's also not much on the impact the show had on future television or black culture, which is strange considering the tag line is "How the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air remixed America."

There should have been so much more to this story. It feels like the book is supposed to focus on the men of the Fresh Prince show. That's probably unintentional, but it's the feeling you are left with.

Ein bisschen der "keep her name out of your mouth"-Attitüde war hier schon damals zu spüren.

Book 33 of 2024. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

The Fresh Prince Project is discussing how the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air came about and the show’s legacy.

My overall thoughts: My bias is going to show because I thought this was an excellent book. A page turner I must say. As someone who considers the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air one of the greatest shows ever, it was only right I purchased this book to get the scope on what happened behind the scenes, the history of how the show came about, the writers and producers, and even the people who made the show, most notably Will Smith. The only gripe I had with book was some of the information felt repetitive to me, but it was journey to read about Will Smith’s growth as an actor. Reading this book made me think about how The Fresh Prince portrayed the Black (African-American) experience without being too preachy or heavy-handed with the message. It’s why the show will remain timeless. The way the writers kept up with what was hot during the time made it feel refreshing.

I would recommend this book for people (like myself) who are fans of this beloved classic sitcom. A good read.

An interesting read to get some backstory of the famous and loved TV show. At the start, they talk about people who go on to produce or write or pitch the show, but they don't explicitly say that's what their role will be. They introduce a person, share their story, and then later on, like 20-30% of the way through the book, you see how this person fits into the show. I found that hard to stay engaged with, especially because I would only recognize a few of the cast members' real names, let alone any producers, writers, etc (behind the scenes people). Since they aren't names most of us would recognize, I wish they would've added their relevance to the show upon introduction so I could understand why this person's life story will be relevant to the show making.

I might rate this between a 2-3. I'm not too sure if this is a book I'd strongly recommend to others, just because I'm not sure if it gave THAT much information, but I do think it's an interesting read and certainly gave more backstory to the behind-the-scenes than I would've known about.

This was an excellent book that blended history, industry knowledge and cultural context with a show that is well known and loved. It discusses the impact of the show along with similarities and differences between it and other sitcoms about black families.

I think this is a great book for any fan of the show or TV sitcoms, TV writing, etc to read. It gives a lot of insight into certain choices of the show and the background of the characters and the actors.

The book does have a lot of excellent information and focus on Alfonso, Will and James and a decent amount on Janet Hubert but some characters are given basic glance like Tatyana Ali and some (like little Nicky) not mentioned at all - even though they talk about Janet’s pregnancy which was the reason that a new child was brought into the show.

There is also some skipping around when they discuss the shows episodes and seasons although it attempts (and for the most part succeeds) a chronological timeline.

It was so great to know Will Smith is actually as nice as he appears and interviews and on TV. I love him when he was just a rapper singing about parents just don’t understand but think I absolutely fell in love with him when Fresh Prince of Belaire came out so I was so excited to read this book. Any real Will Smith fan would be remiss without this in the library. It is not only entertaining but reaffirming that everything you think you know about Will Smith is either true or even better. I love the cast I loved uncle Phil the original aunt Vivian,, ,Carlton, and Hillary in so many more that made this so great. I highly recommend this book the newest so much fun revisiting with the people I grew up with. I received this book from NetGalley and and Atria books but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

As a huge fan of Will Smith’s and the Fresh Prince of BelAir, I very much looked into to reading this book. It did not disappoint. It grants the reader an in depth glimpse behind the scenes into the show from prior to its inception. It covers the history of Black characters in television which I admittedly had no knowledge of prior. You learn about the creators and inspiration for the show and how they came to formulate the series. How the characters came to be and how casting ultimately was done. It provides background on the infamous story of the tension between Will Smith and Janet Hubert. I came away with a deeper appreciation for television shows that I enjoy as a result.

I ❤️ the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and have since it aired. Started out as a fan with Parents Just Don't Understand (and now a parent myself 🤣).

I not only loved the story, but I also enjoyed the history of black TV shows. I laughed at many of the lines that are now so offensive to people because they value their feelings more than their relationships with others. How raw and ranchy back then...see history repeats itself.

Not getting a five star tho as there was one part that wasn't necessary. I'm tired of today's authors taking their 5 minutes to throw jabs. Sorry, not sorry.

Otherwise well done.

Thank You Atria Books, Simon and Schuster, GoodReads Giveaways, and Author Chris Palmer for the ARC of The Fresh Prince Project How the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Remixed America. On sale 1/31/2023

This book gives you that walk back down memory lane to the 90's. Some places in the book had my eyes popping and the part about the first Aunt Viv where you finally find out what happened there.
Didn't realize Chris Rock was also on the show, I have the DVD set so I plan on watching them all again, more so because of this book. In certain chapters, I think oh yeah I remember that. There are also places in the book that I didn't know. I enjoyed reading this book, hoping the Author has more like this.

Thanks again for the win and the memories.

The Fresh Prince Project is an engaging look into the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Through interviews, first-person accounts and research, this book examines the importance of this series to popular culture. If examines how the show was conceived and how Will Smith was chosen as the lead. It also shows how the writers and creators had to fight for us to see the show as they envisioned. The book will let you see behind the curtain on a hit TV series.
The book was a wonderful and entertaining read.

Thank you to #goodreads, @ChrisPalmerNBA, and @AtriaBooks for a copy of this book.

Lots of great behind the scenes stories and historical context for one of the best sitcoms of all time.
It’s kind of an awkward length. On the one hand, there doesn’t seem to have been enough content about the show itself to fill the book. There are long forays into the history of black television and culture and the systemic racism that informs some of the episodes. All of which is fascinating, but there’s comparatively little about the show itself. With six seasons to explore, 275 pages isn’t enough content.
Still a good book for fans of the show, but it should have been longer.

I won this in a goodreads giveaway and this is my honest review.

Honestly, I kind of went into it with low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised to find that I really enjoyed it. I grew up watching the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, so it was cool to learn about what went on behind the scenes and the cultural impact the show had, which I was too young to appreciate when the show first came out. I thought it was well researched and just the right length. I'd definitely recommend this one, especially if you were a fan of the show!

This book was more of a history book, not only about The Fresh Prince, but also about other shows that came before it. It did not discuss the effect The Fresh Prince had on America. I also found it confusing when the authors would discuss the actors without clarifying which character the actor played, especially when only the last name was used. Some parts were interesting, like why there were two Aunt Vivians, and how the actors felt about certain episodes. But overall, it was somewhat disappointing to me.

Seems like the author was trying to ride on the success of Will Smith Autobiography that was published slightly prior to the release of Palmer’s work. The title suggests this book was going to be a juxtapose of culture and “The Fresh Prince of bel-air”, however this book offered minimal insights into the cultural mirror the show had on society. If it was advertised as a book about the inner workings of the show and behind the scenes then I actually would have thought twice about reading since reading “Will” probably would more than satisfy ones curiosity.

I won this from a Goodreads giveaway. I used to watch this show all the time. This book was real researched and offered a lot of background information about the show itself, the shows that came before it, and the shows after and how that shaped television. I liked seeing the background of charecters and specifically the casting process and learning more about how Will's life, first being a rapper and then to being an actor.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Became the most unlikely tv hit of the 1990s, made with Will Smith a household name, and introduced the world to a new vision of black America.

This book did not bring as much new information as it could of as I had already read Will’s autobiography… but it was still lovely to read, and learn abit more about the other cast members and not just Will, and the production behind it. I loved learning how other black sitcoms contributed to the creation of the fresh price and how they were created from the fresh Prince.

It’s an enjoyable read, especially for those who want to learn abit more about the evolution of black sitcoms
